In this episode we welcome incredible musician/solo artist and all-round diamond geezer, Josh Smith to That Pedal Shed. We’ve admired Josh’s breathtaking guitar skills and musicality for a number of years now. Dan recently put together his flying board that he uses when touring… which is exactly what he was doing during February 2018, when he was good enough to drop in, talk us through the board AND give us all an invaluable set of guitar lessons to boot!

We must also say a MASSIVE THANK YOU to the supremely talented and humble Ariel Posen who was on tour with Josh. Ariel was very sporting for a little gag during this video, and played some beautiful guitar too. Thank you Ariel - we owe you one buddy!

Thanks so much guys. If anyone wants to learn more about playing through changes and just is interested in hearing the best guitar playing around, please check out Bruce Forman and he is one of the guys I'm talking about while explaining things. He's amazing.
Awesome! Cheers Josh!
Great technique and attitude Josh! Love your playing and humbled once again!!!
Josh Smith Shout out to @Bruceforman and Guitar Wank Podcast for more of his philosophy on not just playing but, saying something. We hear it in the way YOU play. When played in context, it is deep
thx josh you're the man
This interview was mentioned by Bruce Forman in his Guitar Wank podcast. I was gonna post a comment asking why he didn't get a mention, Josh, but you covered it here, and you explain his ii-V-I approach really well in the video. Bruce is like a zen master jazz player -- he's got so much deep, good advice, and he's so funny and cool. As well as checking out Guitar Wank, every guitar player on the planet should listen to Bruce talking to Jude Gold on the No Guitar is Safe podcast. I've been stumbling along for years trying to play jazz guitar, and he got me rethinking the whole thing. Love the man! And now I'm a Josh Smith fan, too. Cheers, guys!
Alright, lets get serious here for a moment. In the last year, TPS have shown me Joey Landreth, Kirk Fletcher and Josh Smith. You have shown me how to use a fuzz (thank you for the analogman videos) and you have, basicly, ruined my bank account. My god, you must be sooooo happy with the work you do. Its insane how good the show has become in the last year alone. Keep doing your thing, and just do what you love to do. Many thanks for this!
Thank you Thomas that’s extremely kind of you to say. To get slightly serious in return, Dan and I do this for one simple reason: we love it. We’re not bound by some commercial imperative or having to sell product. So we can just do what we want. Not everybody gets it but we’re stoked that so many people do. Thanks again for the kind words - means the world to us!
I couldn't agree with you more, Thomas!
@@ThatPedalShow That's why this is the best Guitar channel on youtube. You guys are kind of insane, but in a totally great way.
Legends.... Luv ya all....
In the olden days, you could’ve packaged this video in DVD form and charged 60 bucks for it. Masterclass with Josh Smith. Outstanding stuff.
The reaction on Mick and Dan's face when Josh plays...............priceless!!!!!!
Mick’s face when Josh plays through the dualist is priceless. So so so so so good.
27:08 OMG, when he plugged in the Strat and hit the Duelist...I got goose bumps.
it's so weird hearing someone get a nailed on SRV tone like that, a lot of guys are losing their shit today as a result :)
Look at Mick’s “I’m just gonna close my eyes and pretend I’m sitting here next to Stevie” face.
I’ve never seen him in more bliss on camera.
Thats such a tone! How could you want more/less than that. Could listen to that all day.
And based on Mick's face, I now know what a "I must own this so that my life will be complete" expression looks like.
The strat into the Duelist tone blew my socks off! What a player!
Great show. I'd seen info on Josh's board a couple of times before BUT his simple and elegant explanation of how he started playing through the changes...priceless. I've been playing around the edges of jazz for years and have never heard such a straight forward and comprehensible explanation of these fundamentals. Thanks for bringing that to all of us on this vid. And thanks to Josh for doing the 10 years sitting on the couch to bring it to us.
Indeed - a whole education!
This "old dude" mantioned by Josh is called Mr Bruce Forman. Check him out, his great music and masterclasses. :-) And of course Guitarwank Podcast. That Pedal Show great as always. Thank you guys!
Pritch So that young Dude who forget about to mention the old dude' s name besides everyone else should definitly check out some lessons by a REAL old dude called Barry Harris..he goes real deep into Monk, Bud Powell, ...uses the 6th diminished scale( it's fun to use in minor on the 4)Anyways, love Josh, thanks for the vid, best wishes!
Don't know if you'll see this...but your channel has provided plenty of inspiration for lots of us!!!!!
Possibly the greatest episode of all time of That Pedal Show! I laughed, I cried, I have GAS, I'm in a better mood, and I feel like I learned something about music. Thanks guys!
I don't know which was more entertaining and fun, listening to Josh's playing, or watching Mick and Dan's faces in reaction to the playing.
If anyone gets a chance to see josh live..... DO IT !!
You will be blown away , the tone clarity and skill that comes thru those amps is something else 🔥🔥🔥
Josh is awesome. Great player and humble.
Saw Josh and Ariel at the Flowerpot recently. Chatted to Josh about the 2 amp thing. He was as excited as I was. Such a dude!
Definitely in my Top 3 TPS episodes.
That jam at the end is just AMAZING!!!!
This is easily the most intelligent and insightful conversation I have ever heard on tone. Surprising that a channel like this, that could easily advance the argument that pedals are an essential tool for crafting tone, has really taught me that pedals are a small part of overall tone. In many ways a show that could tempt me to spend all my time mucking about with technology has actually taught me how to practice playing. Love it, and thanks again.
We’ve always said that - pedals have no sound. It’s what you pair them with that makes the tones. Thanks for watching!
This might just be a perfect video. It's not about who has the " best gear" or which pedal won the shootout. It's about taking your craft seriously enough to work at it -- musical knowledge, technical skills, AND tone. Josh Smith worked harder than you or me. Wow.
Amen to that!
It's absolutely hilarious how when Josh finishes speaking or playing a lick, the guys take deep breaths and look at the floor in silence lol. He is blowing their minds with every nugget of wisdom.
Never had it laid so bare before that what makes guys like Josh sooooo good...is decades of practice, encyclopedic knowledge of how music works and learning from past masters. And he's so humble too! Best episode ever. Some interviews and from listening to his masterclass in Edinburgh he loves his gear but what really lights him up is talking about music...well done for tapping into this so well. Great job!!
massive respect for Josh Smith.
"No short cuts" Josh.... my god....
What a player and what a gentleman ! Very much enjoyed this episode
Joey Landreth ,Matt Schofield, Kirk Fletcher and now Josh Smith!!! Call it a day boys, cause it can't get any better than this!
Never! There’s always more!
Bring it on!
Watching 2 young guys like Josh & Ariel play together like that reminds me of Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed doing the same thing in the early 70’s, it’s nice to know that style of country-jazz isn’t dying off any time soon. Fantastic show
That was probably the single most valuable guitar lesson of my whole life! All of a sudden a lot of things fall into place. And what a nice and entertaining guy Josh is....
Josh Smith has been one of my favorites for years and it is always awesome to hear him play and talk about music (and gear). This was great!
I want to personally thank you for introducing me to Josh Smith. What an incredible episode. Thank you.
Josh Honking Smith yall!! That was amazing. You guys have had so many amazing players on, but with Josh playing it was like SRV and Jimi Hendrix came in to do a rig rundown! AND, this dude named Josh came in and outplayed them! Incredible.
WELL! I obviously got excited and wrote that halfway through. AND Josh gives the best online lesson ever ? AND you bring on Ariel Posen for a 5 minute cameo?? Words fail me. Best episode ever!!
Josh is the man!! Can’t wait to watch this 20 times.
Kinda what I was thinking. :o)
I spend nights streaming their old shows to my tv, nothing for me on tv is as good as this channel.
I totally agree, I'm pretty sure I've seen each episode at least 5 times and some like the fuzz episodes a lot more.
He is so much the man, the real “Boss” :-)
Proof that it’s all in the fingers. This is one of my favorite episodes!
Well, and in the gear too. If we gave Josh our Jem and a cheap modelling combo, the notes would come out, probably, but you wouldn’t love them as much as we love this. :0)
That Pedal Show too true, but man, Folks like Josh, Greg Koch, Joey Landreth, Aaron from Intervals, and others have a feel that is so different from anyone else. Some beautiful artists coming out for new musicians to gawk at! If only they received more spotlight.
Josh´s timing really is unbelievable.
Josh Smith and Derek Trucks...best living players in my opinion. Both so humble too! Great vid
I think that I learned more from the things Josh Smith said in this episode than from many of my past teachers....Clarity personified. I also enjoyed his remark about the Tchula being a gigging musician's effect - this is true of many pedals and players could avoid a lot of buyer's regret if they realised that most pedals are made to be played LOUD and only get 'that' sound when used in front of a "cooking" amp...Other than that, what can I say ? Josh and Ariel were simply fabulous at the end....This is what CZcams does best. That Pedal Show is on a roll at the moment - keep up the good work fellas !!
Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it, and that we connected with this one. When we’re doing the stuff we like, it works so much better! :0)
Enjoy the gig tonight....I'm playing Netflix myself :-/
Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it, and that we connected with this one. When we’re doing the stuff we like, it works so much better! :0)
That's such a good point about using passing chords as a way of joining up changes in lead playing - Josh is awesome.
One of the best TPS episodes. Many words added here.....
hands down the best jam I've ever heard
Speechless...thankyou mick, dan, josh and ariel.
Good grief, that intro is enough to make me give up. Superb player.
Can we get Nels Cline on the show next?
That would be FANTASTIC. I saw him in New York once with a visual artist, Norton Wisdom I think his name was. Blew my mind. Mick here.
That Pedal Show he's a genius AND a massive gear fan. His rig rundown video is basically the reason I started experimenting with pedals (then you guys told me which ones to buy!).
get Julian Lage! It will be amazing discussing teles and tweed champs plus his musical journey! I'm sure robert keeley would love seeing this too ;)
If you ever get to talk to him he is so cool. Got to go to the aftershow in Chicago on a total fluke and he actually spent a good 5-10 minutes talking to me and my buddy and he was so inspiring and encouraging. Not the usual way either, he was adamant about us expressing ourselves in music and that every player has something unique and interesting to bring to music. Life changing moment for sure, felt like he handed me excalibur for a moment. A hell of a guy beyond a hell of a guitar player.
I’d put a dollar in the pot to see that episode.
Second time I've watched this... doesn't get old; doesn't get any better!! Schwang!!!
SO much fun to watch this after a few years! I was devastated the 1st time and am now just slain!!! Oh, the years! Love you all so much!
Ariel and Josh.........speechless ,......
Don’t think I’ve seen Dan’s “doing a big poo” face as many times as in this episode
Tom Poynton made me laugh out loud
Everytime I see the expression on mick and dan's face when this guy plays it cracks me up 🤣 it's like they look at each other in awe and they don't know quite what to say. That's some funny shit, love it.
The opening already made this my favorite episode yet, and it just gets better and better. Josh smith you're the man!
Hmmm, I never thought about ditching my kemper... But... damn... SHIT!
I know the feeling. Ditched mine and got a wet dry wet rig because of these guys a while back
It's the fucking Ariel Slide wagon
I sat here for 1:11:00 wondering what you were on about. Then it all made sense.
Mick, there is no way you can be too effusive with two guests like that, my friend. Great show.
Watching this episode, it hit me that the current generation of blues guitarists have all the technical chops of those 80s and 90s guitar heroes but with the balls and vibe of the 50s and 60s pioneers. It’s stunning to watch people like Josh and Kirk do their thing. It looks effortless but every time they hit a note it’s like jolt of electricity right through the soul. Another great show gents. Nailed it.
Cheers Simon, it’s a great privilege to be able to do this stuff. So glad you enjoyed it!
I didn’t expect this when I clicked to watch but this was really educational. Everything from using the H9 with midi (something I’ m learning now) to Josh’s fantastic lesson. A video I’ll have to watch several times before I pick up on everything I think. Good job Dan, Mick, Josh, Ariel and of course Simon
+Peter Jessop cheers Peter ;)
I saw a few videos where Josh talks through his pedalboard. But it's always a pleasure to see and hear him playing. Such an unbelievable great guitarist. His tone is huge, his ear is extraordinary and his articulation is exceptional.
As soon as he started playing that "simple" and basic things to change between chords I was blown away What a great way to describe the matter. Learned a lot of it!
Thank you guys for your constant and excellent work. It's always a pleasure to watch your stuff! Cheers
Cheers Benny - glad you’re getting something useful from this. We certainly did!
Watched this episode last Saturday never having heard of Josh before. By random accident I found that he was playing an hour away from my house on Wednesday (at The Baked Potato in LA), so I bought tickets. Got to sit an arm's reach away from Josh through 2 sets of Music. What an incredible musician and a classy guy to boot! Certainly one of the most memorable evenings of my life. It didn't hurt that Travis Carlton (honk) and Gary Novak (honk) were the other two members of the trio.
+Jason Clark great stuff Jason, yep, to see him in the flesh is a very special experience
IMHO, your best shows yet! Josh is a gift to guitar players in every way. His differing perspectives on everything from when and when not to stack pedals (and why and why not to stack them) to checking one's ego at the door (Josh was humble as well as willing to expose his secrets) was eye opening. Thank you guys for recognizing this and in the process enlightening those of us who struggle with dealing with the drive to think outside the box. If my grammar and sentence structure sucks it because I'm nearly as blown away planted at my computer as you guys were sitting in the room with Josh. Thanks to everyone involved with this video.
Haha! No worries Jake - seems like this one has really made a connection with a lot of people. So glad you enjoyed it - thanks for watching!
Watched every episode and THAT was my favorite one so far. By far.
Hooray!
Great video and so good to hear Josh’s perspective on playing and crafting sounds. Now I need to go practice some more...
Man when Josh kicked on the fuzz & the Slapback Delay.. omg.. dans face says it all.. 😮
How amazing Josh is clearly doesn't need to be stated. But when he plugged that strat in, I feel like that is the closest we will ever be able hear Stevie again.
This must be one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on CZcams. Had never really heard of Josh until he started getting air time in the guitar media recently. Wow.
+Tinman yep, the man’s a force
probably the best Pedal Show episode ;-)
I get so much enjoyment out of hearing and watching guys so passionate and excited about guitars and pedals, amps anything music and when they are such humble and great people that makes it all the better!
Josh's playing is out of this world unreal! Never have I come across a guitarist who is as versatile, assertive, and musical all while maintaining a very identifiable sound. Every single note he plays serves a purpose and creates a different dynamic. Tone, Tone Tone!
I'd love to see him play Jazz with Julian Lage, who's in the same league...
+L. Horn if you ever get the chance, go see him live. To be in the same room as him doing that is just awesome
Yes, it sure is! I'm lucky enough to live 10 minutes away from the Baked Potato here in L.A., where Josh plays quite regularly. It's always an amazing experience!
One of the best episodes ever guys! Gear talk AND its real world application, great guests....fantastic! Fyi...been waiting for Josh to be on the show for so long, glad it finally happened! Next episode...dealing with G.A.S. after watching these displays of amazing gear, haha
Fantastic show. Josh is such a great communicator as well as a fantastic player.
This is the best episode yet. One hour of none stop screaming. Outrageous playing and tone. And MAN is he cool, Josh!
unreal ! Crazy good Stevieray. God blessed indeed. UK's finest video yet. Thanks.
And by the way...hands down to Josh. Such an open minded and cool guy...but mostly so simple in its explanations...especially those where you guys Dan & Mick took a jazz lesson ;-)
Could listen to him all day long. Saw him in Fulham last week. Awesome!
Mixed this guy and his band in Munich 2017. To my shame now, I had no clue who he was. What he basically did was pull his two Morgan amps up real loud and told me to leave it like that and just check all the other instruments, and it'll work out perfectly in the end. I was taken aback by that,. A lot of musicians have no relationship to volume or compression and no feeling for how loud they are. Josh is the exact opposite. Mixing his show like any other show, gating drums, using compression on channels live...completely different animal. in an exciting, refreshing way. He always knows EXACTLY how loud he is. and what he is doing. plus he's of course a beast of a player.
Going back thru time and coming across these hidden gems is amazing !! Josh on tone, Josh on playing and Josh with Ariel = incredible !!
This is my favorite episode ever! Josh’s multiple tones are all super killer. He has a tone with a ring modular he demonstrated on andertons and it was wild. I didn’t know u could get any thing good out of a ring modulator. He has to be my favorite guitar player. My other favorites aren’t alive anymore. I know josh could do an accurate recreation of any of their sounds and or tones. Great episode guys!
Josh Smith joins my list of influential modern players. Was not aware of him besides the name and the growing legend. Interesting to hear he did that amazing Rafael Saadiq album. Stone Rolling is a killer album and I don't even get into that music usually.
I could listen to Josh talk for more than an hour and not get bored at all! Oh wait that's what i did :D !
So many episodes, so many favourites, Think I just found my new favourite episode.
the jamming at the end is just phenomenal 1:11:27
Guys, once again thank you so much !!! I was totally in awe the whole video but one thing floored me, it's when Josh demo'ed the Octave pedal and spoke about Oh Girl by Raphael Saadiq cause i'm a big Saadiq fan and this particular song might be my fave by him !!! I gotta admit too that when he played his Strat into the Duellist, I was like Mick "holy shit! This is it ! That's THE sound !!! " and one last thing, during the (killer) jam at the end, i believe Josh 2nd phrase is note for note a Robben Ford one (must be somewhere in his REH Blues and Beyond vid if i'm not mistaken) anyways, thanks again, you guys are really awesome, the coolest guitar/amps/pedals geeks around for sure !!! Peace from France
I love how josh is so open towards his tone and knowledge.
Yeeeesssssss!!!!! I have been waiting for this episode! This has lifted my spirits, big time. Thanks guys, and thank you Josh for your music and inspiration. All the best!
YES, FINALLY!
Matt Scofield, Kirk Fletcher, Josh Smith, perfect modern blues guy ! Also, Tomo Fujita's guitar lesson !
What is inspirational for me, watching this, is the experience of exceptional knowledge combined with genuin passion, humility and playfulness.
Watching this again since I didn't want to watch a video about "Worse pedal platform amps" :) Love this :)
AMAZING GUYS
Omfg omfg, just got to the Ariel part hahahaha...so awesome, TPS and Andertons has put me on so many amazing guitarist
Pedal education and a guitar lesson to boot! Pure bliss. Thanks for turning me on to Josh Smith as well.
I can watch this video over and over and never get tired of it. This is how I discovered Josh and man am I glad, got myself a ticket for the Edinburgh date of his UK tour this October and can’t wait.
Josh Smith - YES
its funny watching Dan and Mick having a fan moment over Josh the way so many people have the same moment over them lol
1:11:10 HAHAH! "Oh, you're bringing Ariel out - yeah nice." That really cracked me up...!
Thanks guys (and Josh of course) for an AMAZING episode!
Best episode I’ve seen yet! Thank you for continually posting great content and keeping me coming back for more!
What a great episode. I went straight to iTunes and bought some of Josh's stuff. Same thing with Kirk Fletcher when I saw the original Anderton's interview, Joey Landreth, the guy from Big Wreck, etc. It's awesome.
1 quick piece of constructive feedback. Please watch your levels. For those of us listening on head-phones, you are blowing our ear-drums between dialogue and digging in. On an external speaker, it's dynamics. With head-phones, it's destructive.
Weird! I mix all this on headphones and don’t have that problem?! Mick here. Wonder if CZcams is normalising something?
Best show so far. Awesome content.
What a lesson.......we've all been handed our asses.......!!!!!!🎸🎼🎵🎶📢📢📢
Opening licks are so sweet!
Man - great show, great tips...Josh is the man, and a little jam w/Ariel too? You guys are too good to us.
My new goal in life is to be half as good at some thing as Josh is at playing that Tele...
Man...what a legend. Awesome sounds on this one and Josh's playing is just incredible! Really makes me feel like I know literally nothing about how to play, but at the same time is very inspiring. Thanks for the amazing episode guys. So cool having guests on this like!
Great looking board too :)
This show just keeps on getting better. Thanks Guys!!!
For me personally at age 50 and still working hard every day, 13s are a recipe for arthritis. I'll stick with my 9s on 25.5 and 10s on 24.75
Oh man, the jam at the end! I was inspired until that point, now I just know there's no point!. Haha great episode, guys!
What a gent. So knowledgeable and yet so chilled, and that SRV tone was bloody marvellous.
The tips I'm taking is high action (neck relief) thick strings and max out pedal volumes. Also, lots n lots of playing gigs as practice. Killed me with the octavia bebop lines.😂 w/jimdrix joy.
