- Greg Koch visits That Pedal Show with the Koch Marshall Trio band for jams and banter. We also demo his signature Reverend Gristlemaster guitar, The Greg Koch amp and of course the Gristle King pedal. Get ready for a ride of truly savage tomfoolery!
Life too short for long CZcams videos? See the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ timings below.
Ah, Greg Koch. Gregory Kochery. The Gristlemeister, Sasquatch of six-string savagery. Do you dig it? Well we dig it to epic new levels in this video as our old chum finally descends on That Pedal Show to split our sides with tales of wanton guitar heroism… and a lot of hard work and idiotic compulsion for this thing we loosely call ‘music’.
Greg tells us all about his beginnings as a pro musician, before we get into the nittiest-gritty on his signature Reverend guitar, Koch amp and Gristle King pedal.
And just when you thought it couldn’t scale any more magnificent heights, we are thrilled to welcome Koch Marshall Trio: Toby Lee Marshall on organ, and Gary Koehler on drums for renditions of tracks The Tulsa Tussle, Unrepentant and Sweet Tea. Even Dan and I get in on the action for some jams. More saggage than savage, but hey…
Do we dig it?
Dig it!

The world is just a better place with Greg Koch in it.
Jonathan MW you are so right that’s entertainment!
Amen!
Agreed
He's just one of Thor's people when you see them coming you know good time are afoot.. I just wish I would have found him sooner..
well said
Everyone should pay attention to Greg's humor. That's how you survive in this type of industry. It's obvious how hard Greg works but his spirit can really shatter any built up cynicism one may acquire jousting through the business. He's the only person I can think of like him, hilarious, fun, lighthearted and a seriously devasting player with no ego or pretense. He's really the best
nailed it....
I would add Phil X to that list about having a sense of humor and still killing it.
@@Grey_Pete absolutely
add Satchel
Well said
“...(back when) you were swimming around in your dad’s yam pouch” has to be the greatest thing I’ve ever heard, besides his guitar playing!
I can't get it out of my head, funniest thing ever. Grocery store trips will never be the same.
I was crying over the yam pouch comment.. Best line I've ever heard...
Asspaste is definitely a riff i'm going to incorporate into my lexicon
@@RobertKeeleyTV Funniest verbal face slap EVER! Not only slaps the recipient, but does a great job of painting quite a picture of his loser dad too.A fan-diddly-astic put down of epic proportion.
I had no clue who this man was a half hour ago but after listen to him utter words at record paces for the last 30 minutes I have been unable to remove the smile from my face and I am obsessed with coming up with a way to be around Greg Koch 24/7. Not to mention good lord can this guy play. I don't think Ive ever seen another musician display their personality more fluently through an instrument.
In a parallel universe Greg is a radio host and he's killing it.
He actually would guest (or still might) on WKLH here in Milwaukee. I don't hold it against him that he lives in a close-by suburb... (I totally do)
@@mooniejohnson yeah, he never wants to jam, I dont get it... haha
And we would dig it
i thought the same thing
He actually does have an album which has been recorded like a radio show!! I think it's called radio free gristle!!
Saw the Koch Marshall Trio playing in Worthing at the start of November, and Greg was wearing his That Pedal Show T-Shirt!
YES!
I believe that's made the old bucket list. Here come's that plane ticket money son! Toby is hitting my feelers with the keys.
I've met Greg a couple of times at Sweetwater's Gearfest. He's REALLY that funny and witty, ALL THE TIME. Such a really cool guy, who makes everyone feel like they've been friends for years. I saw him pushing a rig across the parking lot, and thought to myself, why is this Guitar Hero, of mine, pushing his own rig across a parking lot ? So I came up behind him and helped push a road case that he was pulling by himself. He was his usual very funny and witty self, and Thanked me for helping. I just always remembered what a humble, funny, great guy he was. Aside from what a GREAT PLAYER he is.
Years ago I took my son, a budding drummer, to a Fender clinic at a local music store in the idyllic little Northern California town of Chico. That was our first exposure to Greg, and we have never forgotten it. He is the most entertaining and incredibly talented guitarist I’ve ever seen and he was just there to demo Fender stuff. His random banter is brilliant. My son was 13 or 14 and I’m so glad we ran into him so he could experience the Gristle King. I couldn’t believe there was only a handful of people there, I think it would be different now that CZcams has made it possible for the world to see who Greg is. I’m a fan forever. Great watching Greg crack up the TPS guys.
You know your man cave is big enough when Greg fits into it
Hey man keep it PG. there are kids about!
Meastro Fuzz harsh but true
There's a line in there somewhere about fitting a big Koch in your man cave...
The NotSoGuitarGuy lol!
You guyssss 😂🤣
Greg Koch's humor has officially broken Dan.
Gregory Kochery - brilliant player, and the most funniest guitar dude ever! Impossible to remain in a bad mood with him around!
Actually met Greg about 20 years ago. Was living in Wisconsin at the time and Greg's bass player was my neighbor. One day there he was in the car in a driveway as they were heading to a gig in downtown Milwaukee. Great guy! Thanks for doing this video. Nice work as always.
Evan Miller What kind of car did Greg have? I was wondering what he might drive before I read your comment. He’s got such a unique style about him. I met him at a smallish music festival. We were checking out the same band. I didn’t want to bug him, but nodded and smiled. He actually walked over and struck up a conversation with me. This was 20 years ago. I was extremely impressed by how courteous and humble he is.
Greg Koch Rules! Great episode (and I didn't even finish it yet..)
check out the band performance at the end. You probably already have by now. I hope you're well

Barely 5 minutes in and I've already learned a new pejorative from Greg - "a$$ paste". Love it!
he said asspaste not ass money.....but thats funnier!!!
First, there was the Dave Gregory episode, and I thought that TPS couldn't get any better than that. Then there was the Ed O'Brien episode, and I thought that TPS couldn't get any better than THAT. Now you give me Greg Koch - who wasn't even on my radar until now - and I'm thinking, "Dear god, they did it. TPS can't get any better than THIS." Amazing. This episode was flat-out inspirational - and all with almost no talk of pedals! Thank you guys so much.
Everyone's playing is on point in this video. I can only imagine how intimidating it would be to have a schwang with Greg sitting there watching you, but Dan and Mick brought their tasty licks to this party.
Dan absolutely killed it, and Mick was as good as usual, they are true friends to feel so relaxed!
What you said
Absolutely agree. Greg’s playing is always off the charts, but Dan and Mick tore it up!!
I'm 30 mins in and I've had to pause the video 3 times to catch my breath from laughing so hard. My boss just came into my office and asked what the hell was wrong with me. It's gonna be a good day.
groovezilla79 ; Weren't you supposed to be working all that time? 😳
No kidding. I need a job where my boss is cool with me watching that pedal show during work.
While this is THE GREATEST show ever, I thought Mick would lose his mind with Greg talking over the reverb trails! Lol
Totally engrossing. The thing about Gregory Kochery is his generosity of sprit. Big man. Big chops. Big heart. Hallelujah
The most entertaining commute home ever listening to the podcast, now watching it all again. This is a youtube Classic for all times
It should have been a 10 hour show. That man is just so damn entertaining.
I think that was the best TPS intro by a guest ever.
Greg Koch is a gift to musicians that keeps on giving. Such an awesome talent.
Glad you all found a lens wide enough to include all of Greg standing during the jam session
Oh my goodness!!!! Best TPS yet...we got to really meet Greg Koch (it felt like), and know his thoughts, his gear and a flavour of his music. What fun he projects through his masterful use of the guitar. The Koch Combo sounds so clear and full range, those Fluence pickups are wonderful too. Mr Koch is a 'no bullshit' chap, I like him immensely. It was a great band sound, and quite intimidating I'm sure for you two to jam with Greg, but you pulled it off well, and added to the band sound. I was amazed that the bass was played on the Hammond, also a truly glorious sound in its' own right. I could sit through hours of this music, many thanks to Simon for the editing and mix. For me, it all came together for TPS in this video..perfect :)
This is so great to see. I love the vibe of this show and its hosts. Greg has been a long-standing headliner on my list of all-time favorite humans in this business. I loved working with him at Guitar One. Not to mention his licks destroyed me every month. Mick was telling the truth regarding the smiley face muscles. They get the ultimate work out with Greg. Every time. Bravo!
Greg Koch just voiced all the frustrations of anyone who has ever tried to teach guitar.
I've worked with Greg Koch 3 or 4 times and he's just an absolute delight... also, my (now signed) Gristleking is my favorite pedal EVER. i'll be buried with mine.....
The gregorious duke of schwoidl has returneth!
I wish there was a "love" button I could push for this video.
You guys have created the best show on youtube. Period. Full stop. The trio jams lately have seriously elevated the show, along with the backing tracks. TPS rocks.
Thank you! Here’s to more!
Thanks for having Greg, the man is epic. “Floating around in there Dad’s yam sack”. 😂 This dude has a line for everyday of the week and his playing is beyond real. Thanks for having him on. Made my Friday morning in California that much better. I’m going to be laughing all day
Greg is a life force - what lovely genius
First time I saw Gregg was on CZcams.
I was looking to buy a Les Paul, & Stumbled on a Wildwood video of him playing a Les Paul signature T.
First words he spoke were "Les paul signature T.... Mr T ....Fool!!!!"
I was hooked and been watching him since
Not only an outstanding improviser, it only takes a single touch of reflection, and then Greg arrives with incredible humor, truly superior to any comedian!❤
43:20 - Dan, if you ever start having an existential crisis around your playing in future, simply recall The Gristlemeister himself nodding with approval and ordaining you with the phrase "Nicely done!".
Revisiting this great episode to sponge up more knowledge for the umpteenth time.
What a timeless treasure trove it is.
Thanks team.
Hahah!
Wow!!!!
Amazing episode with Mr Koch.... ending with an amazing jam.... Thank you Dan and Mick love these end of show jams.
Please feel free to end more of your shows with jams 😀😀
What can I say, other than: THANK YOU. All smiles here. This amount of humour, virtuousy playing, tones for days and weeks and months, discussion, appreciation, dedication and most of all - being excited of the peresent moment - this is the best what I´ve seen or hear...just best. Thank you.
So good, all of it. Thank you! Also, what a tonic to hear a few blokes talking about things like joy.
Greg is incredible. He’s got killer chops and a huge personality, and yet there’s not a single whiff of ego or attitude about him. He always seems so warm and genuine. Add to that his wicked sense of humour and it’s almost as if he was crafted to survive and flourish in the music business. It’s been said that when great musicians play they are having a conversation with each other but with Greg, even when he’s just sat playing on his own, it’s like he’s telling you the best story you ever heard. A true musician.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a musician who’s character and personality is expressed through their playing as much as Greg Koch. His style is exactly the way he acts haha
*edit: I commented this before dan said it later on in the video! Glad to see you hear it too 👍
Watching this in headphones on the tour bus and the band and crew keep looking at me strangely for randomly laughing out loud
Love my new signed GK pedal, thanks Greg, That Luxury Drive side is too cool you smooth bastard. Cheers, Mates.
THE GRISTLE. The man, The legend. Greg koch is just ridiculous. you can laugh for ever. the pick up thing with the garlic, oh boy I almost had a stroke. and he can go for ever. what a character. Well done guys, you just made my week!
Proud to say I was wearing my Have Schwang shirt when I met Greg at Sweetwater GearFest this year!
AWESOME! Thank you!
This episode is extra amazing. Great content, great playing, and lots of Laughs!
The end jams were crazy good. Greg is so tall he almost looks like he was green screened in.
Dan's ending "yeeaah" really sums up this episode.
I once met Greg kinda by accident. Turned around a corner in a music store and suddenly he stood directly in front of me. Suddenly the room went dark. Can confirm: he's HUGE!
One of the most hilarious and insightful episodes; it was a very quick 90min. Also, Fraser is doing such a great job with the engineering and mixing. These performances sound wonderful!
I sure am glad ya”ll had Greg on the show, he is one in a million, a wealth of knowledge and a bundle of laughs, and phenomenal guitar skills. Thank you.
I've watched a few hundred hours of Greg Koch videos in my life and I always find him incredibly entertaining and a brilliant player. I must admit I'd never actually heard him play. If my provervial hat was already off to him, after listening to his music I had to buy a new proverbial hat jut to put on and remove again. Fanstastic tracks! I hope I get to see him live in the future!
Every now and again we see a player with total mastery of the guitar.........Greg Koch.......amazing !!!!!!
Well that's a new one for me...first time I've watched That Pedal Show and actually wet myself from laughter 🤣
Apologies for the lengthy comment, but thanks guys for introducing people like Greg to new people. TPS has introduced me to Joey Landreth, Steven Wilson, and now Greg among many other brilliant musicians. Many thanks for spreading good music gents!
This show in particular has been the most encouraging for me as a young musician. Not only is Greg’s knowledge of music and playing ability phenomenal, but he has a respectable attitude that many could learn from. I’ll soon be graduating with a degree in classical guitar performance which I feel has been a worthy journey, but the backlash from others and the constant self doubt that comes with it has been difficult to cope with.
I’ve played drums, keys, bass, and guitar for half of my life now. I’ve played bar gigs, churches, sessions, and solo classical recitals among tons of other gigs. There is nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with people. This show was a reminder that if you love music, the struggles will always be worth it.
I'm starting a band called Yam Pouch. Well done, Greg.
What a beast of a player and so quick witted. Love this episode. I really enjoy the jam outro's.
Any time spent with Greg is wonderful time!
Howdy Gents - been waiting for this episode for a while, so thank you. Right around the beginning of the summer I ran into Greg at Wade’s Guitar Shop here in Milwaukee, WI - a fantastic locally-owned old school guitar store - and Wade introduced me to Greg and we chatted for a bit. He’s everything you’d expect him to be, of course, but here’s the thing: I had just watched his interview with the Captain, and, being a big fan of TPS, I asked him when he was going to do your show. He said you guys had been working on making it happen for a while, and glory be, here we fucking are and it’s everything you’d want it to be. Thank you Mick & Dan & Simon. Dan, you’re spot on - his joy comes through his music in such a palpable way.
Of course now my cheeks are gonna hurt for the rest of the day. ☺️
Awesome job, Dan! My fingers would have turned into solid concrete on that occasion.
Ours almost did. But it’s do or die. We kinda half lived.
Holy smokes that was wonderful. The guy is a walking talking playing breathing encyclopedia of music, comedy, and obscuritae, and wit. Most enjoyable!
Dan sounded fantastic when he plugged in.... and Red is really a special guitar.
It was worth the wait! The gristleman always delivers! Great episode guys.
I knew nothing about Greg Koch before this video. Good thing to know his voice sounds as good as his guitar playing.
Greg Koch makes me question my life choices, owning a guitar for example.
What a ridiculously talented - and funny - guy. I'd happily listen to him talk and/or play for hours.
Such an inspired episode. Greg brought the best out of everyone. Would love to just listen to this guy talk let alone play sweet sweet licks.
Greg is such a phenomenal player. I sit and watched every wildwood video and all his teaching videos. Greg is a prodigy, or like me he's had his hands on a guitar a couple hours a day for 30+ years. He can play any genres of music and is the most soulful player I have ever heard. I mean even more so than SRV, Slash, Eddie, Albert King, B.B.King,and Robert Cray just to make a few of the greats. Greg is an inspiration to me and many others I'm sure. I only wish I could sit with him one day and have a jam session. He plays guitar like I like to do. One guitar and very few pedals and t good loud and tht pushes air onstage. Greg is a great man, great player, and a great icon.
watching the guys desperately trying to keep it together while greg spoke made my day
At one point, I was laughing so hard, I think I started “Charley Brownin’”! If I could have liked this episode a thousand times I would have. That was the best hour and a half of my week. Long live Gregory Kochery!
dan n micks pure enjoyment is soo loveable and infectious
Absolutely the BEST show on CZcams! I Loved this episode especially.
i can't decide which is more entertaining - Greg's humor or Dan and Mick's reactions to it!!
Greg Kock absolutely kills me everytime I watch him play. Amazing chops and his humour hits home with me big time.
So much love for Gregory Kochory! Thanks for all the joy you bring - was laughing out loud all the way through this.. 😂🙏
Thank you, thank you, thank you TPS for just "rolling tape" with Greg. So many of his videos have an obvious time limit and the various presenters are always steering and refocusing Greg to meet it. As a result although I have heard his various origin tales before, I have never heard them done in such a relaxed and amusing manner. You guys must have made time to just hang with Greg and it really shows. Great video, great playing and hilarious start to finish, thank you very much!
This was the most entertaining show ever put on by TPS!!! The ending jam was sweet! AND it sounded great too!!
I love "That Pedal Show" ... and, I love Greg Koch videos ... short sotry; I went to Wildwood Guitars a couple weeks ago because I was told that Greg would be shooting videos that day. Greg was there and I had taken my original Gristle Instruction Video (from 2002) by Greg for an autograph for a Christmas gift to my son ... Greg was so awesomely polite and receptive to my request and I had complete acces to him for awhile along with Ken Haas (CEO of Reverend Guitars) ... they were shooting a video(s) for Reverend guitars and I was able to watch the video for as long as I wanted to stick around ... if you live anywhere near Wildwood Guitars in Louisville CO (I just moved here from CA), you really ought to pay them a visit ... wonderful people and very helpful with any questions or assistance you may have. Thanks Greg for the autograph and quick coversations ... my 39 year old son loved the autographed DVD. If I can load a photo out herre, I will.
That amp is just phenomenal. Wow. Every demonstration I’ve heard of it is mind blowing.
That was by far my favourite episode , that guy is hilarious , great show
AWESOME SHOW!!! This could have been 5 hours long and I would still crave more!
I have to say this is by far the best TPS I have seen yet ! Mic and dan have loads of great shows but this one is truly special. Greg is such a character. There was no faking a "good show " here . The smiles and tears from laughing so hard were legit . The music was absolutely fantastic, and that Koch amp is to die for (and I'm an amp builder ) !. Bravo 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
I have the Gristle King straight from Greg with the Master of Gristle's own signature on the back... THIS is now my favorite pedal. It is all I need in a boost and drive! Fabulous!!
We've waited a long time for this. Today is the day. I'm so excited.
This has been an incredible episode and just what I needed today as I've had a bit of a blue heart. Thank you, Gents and Gregory.
Only an 1 hour and 27 minutes? I could have watched that all day!! Had the pleasure of meeting Greg at Summer NAMM a few times. He may just be the greatest guitarist of hour era.
What a guy! Glad to have heard his music and learnt a thing or two from Mr Koch. Thank you TPS for this awesome opportunity.
Dan's playing is absolute🔥
in this episode. The jam segments really showcase the talent y'all have, keep it up.
Dan's solo at the end is some of his finest playing!
You tend to 'rise to the occasion'.
Agreed!
Dynamics - starts low and slow, builds and builds to the finish. It's an art-form.
Agreed!
Everyone played awesome, and Dan's was incredible. I would froze up with gargantuan immensosity of the Gristle King.
Here is the collision of my two favorite guitar personalities (M&D are a single unit) and it’s just so great. Thank you for the extra long video!
Greg was hilarious in this! Great character and a unique voice on the instrument, that's the kinda combination that makes a guitar legend isn't it?
I just love Mick's face at 40:30 after Greg playing a nasty gristley lick
Great show! Greg is a wonderful musician, and he’s my favorite comedian. I was laughing uncontrollably several times.
Thanks for the show gents. Koch is truly a one off. His personality totally comes through in his playing which is infectious!
21:40 SHPOIDLE and the stifled giggles; that’s my favorite part 😂
Love hearing him play "Stairway to freebird "
completely lost it at 24:00 and had to rewatch 3 times! XD
Guys, that was one of your best shows ever. Obviously Greg has got a fantastic sense of humour. He kills me. But as you point out, his ability to bring that to his music is the most fascinating part about his playing. There are so many twists and turns. He never fails to surprise you with his phrasing. The prebend and release with huge vibrato slays me every time. Thanks for this one.
He is so proud with all the reasons in the world that it is so easy for him to count this as a basic story and it is so incredible for us. We know very well that this is how it happened. And then Wow! what a story that reminds us very well what era this is all came from and in front of the big BOSSES at the time …
Greg is so switched on he makes it looks easy to be crazy. Really a unique and beautiful soul.
Gentlemen, the jam session at the end was epic. Awesome playing all around. Also Greg's awesome and I need to find a way to see one of his shows here in the States. Thanks for the excellent episode.
mic drop, guitar drop, kick the mic stand over freakin awesome !
Milwaukee, WI: We don't have much, but we have Greg Koch! Take that, every other city in the World!
and decent beer.
Jared Plant Hey, we got Wade’s Guitar Shop too!
I can't argue with that👍
@@clbazar Thank God for Wades.
Jared Plant For real my friend. Those guys are awesome. See you there sometime.
