- Three pedals each, selected at random. Who gets what? Who sounds okay?
Welcome to the show! A bit of fun today… What happens when you give me and him three random pedals? What other gear do we choose to complete the rig, and what kind of sounds will ensue?
Let’s find out!
Pedals & stuff used in today’s episode
A quick note on the buffer confusion…
Hello, Mick here. I did some reading after the show and both the UA Del-Verb and the Nordvang ’83 Drive are not true bypass. They both use always-on buffers. I’m going to make a little follow-up vid to explain the significance of this.

NEVER stop doing these challenge episodes, regardless of how they may look on paper. ❤
Less than two minutes in and there is already a jiggling ball bag!
Would you expect anything less from the lads? Happy Friday!
You shouldn’t talk about Mick like that…
Hey, that’s the name of my bowling team!
Dan's tone was a thing of beauty. I thought he was going to struggle with the pedels he drew, but he really made them work with that lovely guitar & amp combo.
Long time fan but the invoking of Noel’s knobs has brought me so much joy. First because he said what many of us think I’m sure. Second because Noel. I mean what a legend.
I love how this started as a daft and suitably silly concept and became a brilliant journey of tonal discovery.
The star of the show: the AC30 What a killer amp! Great show as always!
It's a MAGIC thing!
Nothing I like more than a TPS challenge show. Bingo up!
Holy expletive! fantastic tones all around today! There’s nothing like hearing Mick with a good fuzz, and I’m glad to see the gretsch getting some love.
Never in the history of YT has there been a better intro. "Stop doing that, please." 🤣
It’s a joy to hear Mick & Dan actually jamming together. More of that please 😊
"If you put too much you can never take them off". Oh how I would have loved to have heard that 2 years ago.
We got two Noel's knobs this week! Truly blessed. Great video!
Fun show guys! I love this format of just trying random pedals because it's interesting to see you guys discovering something new. I also think we can all relate to ordering a pedal online, opening it up for the first time, and trying to figure out how the dang thing works- so in a way it's fun to watch you guys puzzle through this stage as well. Thanks!
Loved the show. I like the challenges because it gets you two gents thinking and teaches us how to approach pedals. I’ve learned loads from watching the show!
“Overhanging Jacks” is the name of my new band!
That method for randomising was perfect - definitely worth doing again 😂
When Mike turns up the AC30 and you both giggle! I fucking love you guys 😂
I'll never understand how this channel doesn't have waaay more subscribers than it currently does
I love the videos with the practical 'make the board' section, made even more relatable when Mick makes comment of how bloody hot it is in the room as he's putting the board together. These video's also always make me pick up a guitar while i'm watching. Great fun as usual!
Dan and Mick, loved the episode. This is so much fun. We’ve been doing something similar to this over on the Palen Music channel and it’s been so inspiring to find new tones. If you want an extra level of difficulty I have my daughter pick three random pedals from the whole collection and she sets the pedal order for the board. It makes for a tough challenge when she goes reverb fuzz chorus but it’s led to some amazingly fun sounds.
42. The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. 😆
I'm an old school traditional boat builder. Worked for a year or two re-fitting super yachts and every bit that isn't structural is held together with 3M tape. Madness. Great for a pedal board, grips like fu*k, not so hot on a super yacht.
I LOVE a little That Pedal Show on a saturday morning!
Great show, nice run-thru of a good batch of pedals, and great variety of tones. Mick, thanks for the buffer follow-up in the "Show Description" info, good to know. Cheers!
Can anyone tell me how I end up watching two old man playing bingo on YT... and it was fun. Great vid guys
I liked when Dan was surprised by the professionalism of printed cards. 😂
He’s so easily impressed.
That’s Number Wang!!!!!!
YES!
Makes me so happy that you get it
It's a new record. 58 seconds before I had to pause until I stopped laughing. That "six old ladies clapping" fx was *chefs kiss* .
Outstanding !! Great tones and playing !! And definitely do this again !!
This makes me think of a new challenge.... Both contestants build 2 boards (approximately $1000/lbs). Board 1 is a few high-end pedals, board 2 is a commoners board with multiple gains, modulation, delay, verb etc. (Use the best quality u can afford in a fully functioning gigable board).... then see which approach makes the most sense. I.e. Quality vs. Quantity.
Another ‘feel good Friday’, thanks to Dan & Mick. Awesome guitar tones and info, as we expect! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love this format! Proves that you can get amazing tones out of any combination. Creativity in its true sense. Would love you to revisit this format once in a while. Have a great weekend toes!
This actually fills out my TPS bingo card.
That means I'm allowed to buy another pedal.
A perfect draw! Love the show, thank you, and have a lovely weekend!
I’m a bass player , who loves to play guitar and I always find inspiration from your Friday shows !
Instead of referencing the talking head you should super impose Noel's head as a chyron with amp settings at the bottom. Great episode!
Brilliant as ever, very clever and fun - and still just finding every way to just sound lovely and amazing on guitar - both of you!!! Loved it!
You done it again! Great tones! Great playing! Very glad to hear the Gretsch thru the AC30! Most enjoyable! Thanks
Great show fellas. You guys seemed to be in better than average spirits. Nice to see Dan's big Gretsch make an appearance. Refreshing.
The fact that the 3 newest UA pedals made it out of that bag is uncanny 😉
This is so fun, fellas! Love this video idea and hope to see more ✌️
This is awesome. I love this idea and hope you guys do it again!
As a long time fan of TPS, Mick and Dan, I am very sad that I can't watch the show anymore. Last week, I woke up with SSNHL in my left ear (sudden hearing loss). It is being treated, but the prognosis is unclear. I can't play guitar anymore because I can't stand sound at this moment.
I hope to recover and enjoy the show again in the near future. For now, I will miss you guys. 😢
For the people reading this: if you experience sudden hearing loss, seek medical help as fast as you can. Time is very important for the prognosis of recovery. Don't mess with your ears!
We wish you all the best. Hopefully it's something temporary and fixable. Big love from us!
Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. Hope you’re back to music very very soon. And thanks kindly for the advice.
I want to thank everyone for their best wishes.
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?
-Joni Mitchell-
Sorry to read this mate, I hope you get some positive news soon. Keep talking, it keeps us all sane and we're a decent bunch 🙂
@@MrNeilltupman Thanks Neil.
I personally love this situation you guys have put yourself in. Please do more. pick three completely random pedals and figure them out and jam.
You should do an even more random selection - number every pedal in that room and then play bingo! And do the same for guitars and amps!
Such inspired playing today! Was playing this in the background working and had to stop a few times because i got so absorbed. Props!
I’ve had a song I’ve been working on for a few months and couldn’t quite figure out what it needed. Listening to Dan play the galaxy just unlocked it for me.
Thank you for the inspiration!
Bingo halls have prizes for the first person to get the numbers in the four corners of the card, to get a line across the card, to get a diagonal, and then the main prize to get a full house
If we're doing challenges, how about you each make a covers gig Boss board (I'm not sure this works with any other brand), but you both lose any duplicates - shafting your opponent (say by including every pedal ever) is encouraged.
Tasty tones all around. Great way to kick off a Friday!
Haven’t laughed so hard at TPS ever - more Bingo please!!!!
"Just As Better" is a perfect pedal shirt idea 15:21
Noel's Knobs cracks me up every time!
Glorious sounds all round on this thoroughly enjoyable episode and all from a ball bag 😛, BINGO !! 😄
Im seriously half way in and have to make a statement here...Listening to that AC30 going into crunch was giving me some serious goosebumps...cant imagine what it must have been like in the room! Awesomeness just from a guitar and an amp. Also, would have loved to hear Micks board into something like a Fender Pro Junior. Seems like 3 pedals "can" be everthing you need...
The AC30 is truly magic. Mick here. As it happens I've asked Fender to loan us two Pro Juniors. I want to see if my wet-dry board would work into them. I think it will!
@@ThatPedalShow Running my wet dry board in a Pro Junior and a Blues Junior I can assure you it works wonderfully. Im running both IV versions. Coupling means a tad more Bass. Its a magic thing wet dry, got you 2 to thank for that. Make a video about it if you find the time...my guess is there is loads of people out there running smaller amps that need to be infected!
Wheel of Fortune next? Jeopardy? Yea nah I think it's time for The Chase Challenge!!! Lovely tones on both sides, as usual
"I've never been North of Bristol, I don't know what bingo is" 😂😂
"It's Daedalus, Herc, and he's got the Mask of Vulcan... the Mask of Vulcan!"
- Newt
great video guys! I'm happy to see Mick's knob settings.
Daedalus was the father of Icarus. There was an academic journal called Daedalus. I think it's a by-word for wisdom.
Love the jam you guys did at the end
You guys should do the same thing with random guitar, 3 random pedals, and a random amp. For the pedals, you then have to have them in a random order. Of course, using the jiggling bingo ball bag.
so cool guys! really enjoyed this and learned a lot!
Great show! Would love to see this type of challenge again, where you are given random pedals and have to come up with some sounds 👍👍
Guys, this was fantastic. Real sonic voyage. Full of ideas and inspiration. Really well made. ❤❤❤
So entertaining. Thank you 🙏🏻 love your sounds as always. I was surprised by the amount of overdrive the MAX can create. How is that working? Carry on with everything you do. You’ve made my day sooo many times. Really do appreciate the challenges. Also the older ones. So inspiring. Love and greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 ❤
Philipp
Hello Philipp! We didn't explain it very well, but that red knob on the Max is actually a model of a UA 610 preamp! That's got some great drive in it. Cheers!
Utter. Complete.Nonsense. exactly what I've been looking for!!!
This was fun and I was surprised by how informative it was to see how you approach exploring new pedals. Maybe this could be a regular theme
I love the audio editing at the start. Great video guys.
Epic video though, very glad to see challenges are back!!!!
Daedalus (deed-a-luss) was the father of icarus (that greek dude who flew too close to the sun and his wings melted)
The pedal o fortune is a great video model. I loved this format. Thanks from Australia
As always, watching you guys play inspires me to play. Stunning playing and some very interesting voicings.
I would like to make a suggestion. It's great that we got to see you changing the settings on the pedal. But I would love it if you could split the screen so we can see the pedals being dialed in, but also see you playing.
I love the sounds and chords you play but would love to see what you are playing.
Since watching your interview with Noel Gallagher, I have picked up the guitar every day since.
Thanks for that. 👍
I haven’t even got through the video all the way and I just love the amount of laughter and fun you are having with this. I’m expecting my belly to hurt from all the laughter and my ears to love the tones from the Tonemasters and Fathers of Fuzz.
That was awesome. Very inspiring hearing how and what Dan created from the ball bag. Wow 🎉
Another terrific episode of TPS. The pedals featured were cool, but what I liked most was hearing Dan and Mick play. And when they played together (improvised, I think), it was a real treat for fans like me. Thanks, lads!
Loved this format! Very educational as well as entertaining. You guys could do a breakfast cereal challenge and it would be a joy to me! ♥
You had me at “fondle thy balls.” 😂
Mick, just to say that when you were trying to reassure us that just because three UA products were picked it was still “random” anyone who has watched TPS before has no problems believing in its randomness 🤔😉🤣🤣🤣
Hahahaha!
Big thumbs up and guffaws for the nod to Aussie band Supernauts "I Like It Both Ways"....what happens when you have an Aussie in your midst...Dan is rubbing off on you ...oo'er missus...
That fuzz is the business....nice playing as always gents, lived the Wicked Game quote, never thought id like to hear that lick played on anything but a Strat, but the Bigsby does a smoother jobbie on the rising pitch than a Fender Strat vintage trem (especially a decked one!)...noyce. Also please dont forget to call "safe" at end of over before leaving your crease, as most Aussie kids learn playing backyard cricket but the English seem to have missed at professional level :)
The UA Max is a truly magic pedal, particularly with single coil git-fiddles (nudge, nudge - TELE!!!)! The flexibility of the 1176 and LA2A pickups PLUS the classic 610 tube preamp, it is my absolute favorite addition of 2023. Pushing the 610 preamp gives you a glorious grit, especially into the 1176. I keep the LA2A side for clean and warm playing. Spend some time with it, Dan - It will make you and Butters smile!!!
Reverb and Delay, when done well, puts me in an altered state. For over an hour you two guys coaxed me into Dreamland. Really really nice! and out of a grab bag. Wow!
59:00 - Bloomin’ majestic, Mick! Well batted.
Not what I expected from any of these pedals. Very insightful and entertaining video. 😎
Wondered why this was such a long video, then watched the first three minutes and it all became clear 😂
1:09:32 - Same here, thank you Dan. You’re a magician. 👏🏻
That loose jam was mind blowing! Just awesome!! ❤️
Mick, LOL, that Mancunian "Ah woander wot the SETTINGS are" gets me every time
(P.S. Dædalus is the Latinized form of Daídalos, DYE-dah-los, the father of Icarus/Ikaros, who made those famous wax wings so they could fly out of the minotaur's labyrinth, and then you know what happened to poor old Icarus. Howay, Tricky Icky lad)
Watching you blokes learn new pedals is both informative and cathartic. But man, Mick’s rig would last me to the end of my days. Vintage Strat, Klon, BB, Fuzz, Delay and Reverb all into a Two-Rock? Perfection.
The jam was awesome! More please!
Just occasionally we just need a silly TPS episode. And I think this is that. 😂😂😂😂😂
Great job guys
Dan always has the most beautiful guitars. Loved the Les Paul's lemony finish at the start, and a big Gretsch hollow is always a thing of beauty.
Just stellar toneage all round- love your work gents
Love listening to Mick play a Strat with some good fuzz through that damn Two Rock. Truly magical. I could listen to an album of that sound all day.
Thank you!
1:03:09 - Dan gave the eyes early doors during the Boss delay video the previous week and I had fingers crossed for another classic wig-out.
Putting the mortgage on another classic improv-journey before we finish in this episode!
Love Mr S’s ambient playing. Always takes him to somewhere magical.
Just got my first electric rig together thanks to Dan and Mick's insight, and felt obliged to order every thing I could from That Pedal Shop. I'm talking patch/TS cables, an assortment of pedals, and a power source. I couldn't be happier with the experience. The goods arrived fast, I am across the pond, and in perfect working order. I am particularly pleased with the D&M Drive, as well as, the Mythos Oracle Analog Echo. The first go at cranking the 65 Reverb Deluxe RI was magic, not to mention all other subsequent times too, especially for a strictly acoustic player. Well done boys, and thank you.
Nice one! And thank you for using That Pedal Shop. Happy tones ahead!
We’re never sour about your playing great music @thatpedalshow!!
Filtertrons deserve a special episode!
Filtertrons. Hilotrons. Dynasonics. All three classic Gretsch pickups are sleepers that need more profile. And they all sound better with a Nocturne Brain pedal.
Every Friday with bingo now, then, chaps? I'll take it.
Yes! So happy the ac30 is back out!
