I just love Julian’s soothing, encouraging presence. He’s like a guitar therapist.
This interview was incredible!
The most important thing for me is originality. Julian Lage sounds like no one else and his knowledge of jazz is immense. One of the most important guitarists of the moment.
This guy is like the Nabokov of guitar, to me. I do not understand where he came from, how he expresses his language so effortlessly. And at the same time, it's deeply human, not merely academic, not a thought-experiment but something emotional and raw. It makes total sense to me that he is also a lyrical bluegrass/acoustic player who's not just playing a bunch of dissonant shapes because he's bored of pleasant harmonization.
The guy has a deep well in that heart of his, and we're all lucky that his brain and fingers are up for the challenge of translating it.
I think Julian has struck the perfect balance between sounding completely original while still engaging deeply with the tradition. Every great guitarist of the last 100 years has left their mark on his playing, but he doesn’t really sound like any of them.
I’ve watched Julian play but never heard him in an interview before. What a delightful guy!
He did a podcast with Rhett Schull and Zach Broyles - their podcast called Dipped In Tone. Great listen as well.

I have this for a while!! I would love to see a Disney short film inspired by Julian Lage
I’ve seen Julian in concert 6 times and spoken to him on a few occasions. Each time felt like a transcendental musical experience. His humility and kindness is just as incredible as his playing. Not to mention the dynamics between him and Jorge. My favorite musician and band by far.
His kindness just jumps off the screen in all the interviews I've watched. I haven't talked to him, but I did see him live doing his duo with Nels Cline. That was super fun!

@@StrengthandSanity When he played with Nels Cline's group right before Squint came out was when I first saw him live. That was one of the coolest concerts I've ever been to. I'm getting to see Nels play again in August!
@@evp854 Very cool! Nels is also great fun to see. I was lucky to see the Nels Cline Singers many years ago... sat literally 10 feet away from the band. He had Trevor Dunn playing double bass on this particular gig. An added bonus as I also like Trevor's work (and had seen him with John Zorn, also saw him with Fantomas... sadly didn't go to the Mr Bungle tour with the original band in the 90's... I had a chance but didn't go).

Julian is one of the most inspiring, natural, fluid, connected and sincere guitar players I’ve ever heard. Truly amazing.
I've played and have been a huge fan of other players all my life. I saw Joe Pass play for four straight hours, and I was sitting close enough to reach out and touch him. There's virtually no serious guitarist in any genre I haven't listened to. But I have never seen or listened to a guitarist whose knowledge of theory, counterpoint, and musical history even comes close to Julian's. His technique is beyond flawless and he possesses a nuanced and complete mastery of dynamics. He never shows off and always plays musically, inventively, and to the tune, not for his ego. His originality, his sense of groove and ability to swing, and the fact that he can almost magically appear to never repeat the same line no matter how many times he plays a tune is staggering. He can whisper and he can roar. He seems to be able to instantly realize any musical idea he has, and he just does things no one else can do. He's also a master blues and bluegrass player, a noise rock musician, and a peerless free jazz improviser. He's as soulful, articulate, and erudite as a person as he is a player. I hated the fusion/Metheny-Scofield era. I respected Holdsworth but hated the music. I like metal but have zero patience for shredders (athletes, not musicians). This is the player I've wanted to hear and play like my entire life. Thanks for this!

Julian's technical skills are self evident, but even more important is his amazing musicality. Usually people who say the "play with feel" are just blues dads too lazy to practice. Julian has the chops and plays with FEEL more than anyone else I've heard. I've been following him for a few years now, and he seems like such a humble soul, breathing and living through his music.
you're right on the feel point. his "feel" is what the word should be about, his phrasing and approach to his songs and improv are completely different each time. usually when people refer to feel its just about blues bends lol
Julian is an example of the results of involved parenting. He has mentioned his father a few times and I have read that his dad took him everywhere for his guitar playing etc. involved loving parents who help nurture their kids talents whatever they may be cannot be replaced by anything. There is no greater positive force.
His guitar playing is superb, but I'm more impressed with how humble and kind he is in the way he communicates.

My 7 year old son is a huge Julian fan. I play tons of music for my children, and he just latched on to Julian's stuff. He asked for one of those Loog 3 string Telecasters for Christmas "because that's what Julian plays!"
He took his first lesson last week and told his instructor that 'Nocturne' is what he wants to work on first. 😳

Man, I wish all of youtube content were like this interview. This is just beautiful, so well done. Not only is Julian an incredible, astounding musician, but he's just so human. Everything in his music speaks humanity, as well as his way to accept the possibility to get something wrong, which to me kind of gives him the freedom that he has while playing. I think this is why, in a world full of hyper-virtuoso jazz guitarists, you can always kind of recognize him as being one of the most authentic and sincere ones. I also had seen the interview with Rick Beato but it's incredible how he opened himself so much more here, to me it's super relatable. Thank you Julian and thank you Paul!

This is the best conversation around the guitar I've had the privilege to witness. The way Julian articulates creating art, (executing, practicing, learning, performing) is applicable to creative people no matter what medium you choose to explore.

What I love about Julian is that you can see how far down the path he is as a musician (and spiritually) in the mindful way he moves his hands and articulates his investigations. The mere fact that he integrates sax playing, singing, and straight up life experience and emotions into his guitar style from a non-judgmental and highly aware standpoint is just a beautiful thing to be near.
It's so nice to see the expression of admiration on your face in front of Julian's talent. He might be the nicest guy in music ever, could listen to him talk and play all day. Great interview Paul.
I've only recently found Julian. He is a phenomenal player, I'm so glad to see a humble and thoughtful person behind all that beautiful music.

Julian is an example of humanity as its highest level. So aspirational.
Julian and Bill Frisell are the best jazz guitarists nowadays, in my opinion. Both have found their voices on the instrument, which is more important than anything else. I'd love to see them playing together.
Matteo Mancuso is also mind blowing. He's not harmonically even close to Julian, but his technique and phrasing diversity is just another level. And he also seems to be very nice and humble person.

Oh my goodness. There is SO much wonderful information in this interview. I could spend weeks and weeks discussing all these comments with my music teacher. And this has given me so many ideas for things to notice and be inquisitive about with my practicing. I'm so grateful to you, Paul, for having this conversation with Julian. Wonderful.
I really enjoy listening to Julian Lage, not just a wonderful guitarist but such a kind and lovely person, I'm humbled any time I hear him talk.
Thank you for this Paul and Julian. So many nuggets of wisdom in this conversation. I’m 61 and find that now I play guitar because it is a form of relaxation, deep enjoyment and hopefully will keep my neurons firing into old age. But the comment about remembering the first time I played something and it sounded just like the song did on the album really brought me back to when I first stayed playing as a teenager. The first time I plugged into and overdrive and flanger pedal, and it sounded (to my young ears) like Eddie Van Halen is a memory that still brings back to same emotional response. I think that we sometimes try to chase an goal that we think we must achieve in order to be a “real” guitarist, when really it’s the small things that being those old emotions back that are important. My 2 cents anyway…Love Julian’s music. I was fortunate enough to see him in a small club in Victoria, BC several years ago, and it still resonates as one of the best live performances I’ve seen.
