Must be her favorite role. She's so exquisite as Nikiya. So expressive and full of emotion. Her basket dance is so radiant and joyful, and then... Betrayal, despair and death. What a genius!

I have seen Visheva, Zakharova, but no one, not even Osipova, can do it like Alina. She is born to dance Nikiya. PERFECTION!!
I have to agree to a large extend. I have a bias for Zakharova because of all the stupid statements made about her, and I still prefer her ending where she was more wild and that hatred in her eyes when she pointed is still unbeatable for me. I am very picky about Nikiya’s death scene since I’ve seen so many subpar, uninspired performances of it (cough cough Polina Semionova) But this was such a gorgeous and dignified interpretation of a true artist.
Rewatching this yet again, and I have to say: Nikiya is a role I'm quite picky about, but I adore Alina's interpretation. She may not always be my favourite dancer, because I have a slight personal preference for extreme power, but her grace, beauty and extreme emotionality in this role is indisputable. Overall, classical ballet is theatre - It should involve high levels of acting and emotion. Alina is such an excellent actress, as well as dancer; it's easy to believe she IS Nikiya.
Alina is the most coordinated Nikiya I have seen! Also, her expression is great (true, therefore believable and realistic)! BRAVA!!!

I always love this scene, but watching Alina is like seeing this choreography and hearing this beautiful music for the first time. Her expressiveness is supreme as usual.
I wish people would stops criticizing and pulling apart ballerinas technique on youtube. They are at the top for a reason and we should just enjoy their performances and focus on their strong points

Ladies and gentlemen, if you want to see a true artist whose artistry shines through despite a clear limitation of techniques, this is it: taking her time to contemplate what she is doing, listens to the music to ensure musicality is not compromised too much, great facial expression of acting and orientation of head and neck for added nuances. An emotional performance in which a lower quality techniques can be easily forgiven.
Most people cannot separate artistry from impressive jumps or having an stereotypical soft ballet body. It’s sad really.

agreed! This is my favorite role on her thus far. But even in more recent video I think she is coming into her own now and appears to be not just performing but actually enjoying ballet. I hope to see her continue to grow.

@sweetaliena Galina Mezentseva and Carla Fracci were the most impressive dancer-actresses. And now it is Somova who is destined to carry the torch. Can't think of any other dancer today who can match Alina's acting abilities.

why did someone call her a gymnast? that is such an insult to a ballerina.. Alina has grown and matured so so much; anyone who's followed her for a few years, especially since the Ballerina documentary, knows it. she isn't a particular traditionally classic dancer; she's very different. her acting is impeccable, and sure, there are always better ballerinas but it doesn't make her any less talented.
Alina Somova has great potential, she is able to mimic some of Ulyana Lopatkina’s techniques.
For me it will always be Kabriela Komleva,one of the greatest star of Kirov(MT).
Nothing against Alina, but Vishneva's interpretation is the best. Vishneva dances it with so much more vigour-she's so graceful I didn't even know she was capable of that.
This is an amazing dance and Alina Is perfect for the role with great technique , expressive face, grace and beauty. Wow

@sweetaliena Agnès Letestu has outstanding acting abilities, abilities that go far beyond what is expected of a dancer. Not sure about Obraztsova, who seems to have one and only one role on stage - that of a soubrette. The role suites Evgenia marvelously, just like it suited Maximova, the greatest soubrette of all times.

@MrRight1000 For Obraztsova, she's amazing has her soubrette like you said but I think it's because they don't give her chance to prove herself. I saw her Odile on youtube, of course, she needs to work a little bit more on interpretation but It was very interesting and surprisingly good.
I consider myself a fan of Somova, but the problem with her uber fans is that they insult other dancers (particularly non-Russian dancers) who they unfavourable compare to her and refuse to acknowledge the most minor criticism. Before I read the comments I thought 'wow what a beautiful performance' but seeing royal ballet dancers being spoken about as if they are vastly inferior, in areas that they are actually superior to Somova, is irritating.
She died a bit early, her acting needs more work, but her technique is sublime

I prefer her Giselle. This isn't a bad role for her, but she hasn't put it all together yet. There are fleeting moments of great interpretation, but it gets lost in the technical aspects of the role. She has a unique physique which hinders her at times, but it could also make her a great diamond in the rough if used correctly.
@sangfroidjen I agree with you. Many people are VERY bias about Alina and many other ballerinas. I always give credit when credit is due. To say that Alina is the greatest ballerina ever is a little bit too extreme and too early to tell. She's a good actress but they are better than her imo. Only time will tell.
@TheBalletDancers She improved A LOT! Her extensions annoys me sometimes because it breaks the beautiful ballet lines but she got real better has an actress but they're better than her imo.
Somova does not have a particularly flexible back- Cojocaru does. Rojo (another royal ballet principal) also has a more flexible back than Somova- compare her Nikiya death scene (the video is 'la bayadere 2009 part 4') to Somova's and you will see that.
Saying that, this is my favourite role I have seen Somova in- the oriental style of the dance suits her long arms beautifully and this is the best acting I've seen from her (and many dancers in this role).
there are many Uber dancers and the top ones are not ALL Russian .Take a look at Jurgita Dronina ,Yaun Yaun Tan ,Marianella Nunez and Daria Klimentova ect , Ballet might have evolved has you say, BUT in classical ballet placement is placement . And if a secoundbesque and developpé a la seconde with a standing leg completely tuned in is the new New, then I guess I am old ,wise but not jealous .

@sangfroidjen May be. But the tendency of trashing dancers goes back way before u-tube. In fact it definitely takes its origin on Ballet Alert and with one person in particular - Natalia Nabatova from Washington DC. As for your preference for Diana Vishneva, can't think of a more deserving dancer. Likewise, there are those who consider Somova to be the pinnacle of creation. It is haters, not lovers whom I blame for trailer trash ethics around this art form.

@MrRight1000 Indeed, they were. But I think Alina Somova is not the only the dancer that have that kind of ability. There's Maria Alexandrova, Natalia Osipova (but I think she overrated), Evgenia Obraztsova, Victoria Tereshkina, Agnès Letestu, Myriam Ould-Braham, Marianela Nunez and many others who have that great ability to fully convey the emotions to the audience. Her Giselle and Nikiya are fabulous, Alina is great but she ain't the best imo.
@russianballetvideo I have to disagree. Galina was sublime in Giselle but acting wise, Carla Fracci definitely beats her. Isabelle Guérin and Gabriela Komleva were AMAZING in La Bayadère. The best Nikiyas imo. Alina doesn't come close to them. She's probably the best at the Mariinsky, but in the rest of the ballet world she not the best. I have to say, this is her best role.
Watch Svetlana Zakharava's variation and there you are with a much better performance.

Честно говоря, мне не очень понравилось. Посмотрите, как танцуют в "Баядерке" Ульяна Лопаткина и Анжелина Воронцова. На мой взгляд, лучше них никто не исполнил танец.
Воронцова, разве это балерина? Это просто смазливое личико Цискаридзе .
Оркестр во время исполнения просто спал. Очень слабенько, по-моему.

very one dimensional , I don't understand her popularity , her acting is more like mimicking , her over emoting in all her ballet roles is played out ! She must rely on extensions for the wow factor !

Why would you think I don't enjoy exquisite flexibility and classical line ?? Think -Olga Smirnova, Viktoria Tereshkina Yaun Yaun Tan, Darcy Bussell ,Sylvie Guillium and Lucia Laccara and one of my all time favs Daria Klimentová to name a few But when classical placement and the musical score are sacrificed to compensate for Alinas famous staccato movements( that often include her over rated développé à la seconde and fouettes that are all strangely executed with her standing leg completely TURNED IN !!) Well thats where I am left scratching my head, And yet u call me jealous, all I am left to think is this is NormaMimosas style !!!
Also, there is no" contradiction in terms' 'when one is over emoting and stuck in being one dimensional, its also known as over compensating and yet still presents itself has flat, a dichotomy if you will . Its what you do when you don't have stage presence(straining your jugular and ear waking are not enough, but they are for Norma) .But what I do get from Alina is that she try's very hard to mimic those great ballerinas that came before her, yet she lacks that Je nais sais qoi BTW it has been mentioned many times that Alina was thrown into swan lake at a young age to fill the void of exaggerated movements Zakharova would leave when she ventured to the Bolshoi. Yet she never quite had or got Zakharova's polished look .
Norma Mimosa - there she goes again with another one of her go to phrases when anyone criticizes Alina "Perhaps you could supply a link to your performances in the same variations to show us just how it should be done" . ( No) but I could supply many of links of dancers past and present presenting this variation that surpass Alina interpretation on so many levels !
Imho you may be overestimating the professional dancers involvement into the action sequence screenplay. Each movement is carefully polished with the trainer. So what you see is not just the dancer interpretation. This is result of hard every day team work.
While free dancer interpretations are possible in some school theatre, when some dancer wants to show her newly trained technique.
Mariinsky Theatre prima dancers do not need more technique. They can do everything. They need to evolve brand of the Theatre, show something more attractive than anyone have seen before. Such performance is then described in respectful magazines, and it is discussed by future visitors of Saint-Petersburg and Mariinsky Theatre.
Stricter guidelines .....The ROH has the strictest guidelines , Cojocaru is as flexible has any ballerina in The Marinsky , what you call "stiff back" I call proper alignment . I took both gymnastics and ballet . Marinsky is more gymnastics when it comes to combre back.
