  • It's a common thought that using an eBike makes you lazy, but is it true. Neil Donoghue has done a few previous tests that have proved this theory right. But Neil was using a full-power eMTB on his last test. This time he is using a light assist Orbea to see if lowering the amount of assistance will help him improve his fitness rather than maintaining it.

i do like the idea of a slighter lighter ebike as i have the canyon strive on in (XL 25.4KG) im 6ft3 97KG, but i have that bike purely because of the range benefits,
My biggest ride to date which was january 2024 was 30miles and 5100ft of climbing around fod cycle centre and the off piste.
You simply wouldnt get that range with a small battery, so i cant justify buying a bike that would hinder your ride range if you like to ride long distance esp for someone of my size and wieght,
Also i had to keep it in eco to achieve those stats and my legs were blown after that, i have no data equipment to validate this but i would say it done me good for gaining fitness as i had to ride all in eco all the time, that was on a 750wh battery and had 9% battery left at end of ride.

Got an E-bike last year and when I started, I was at around 120kilos. Now I am down to 85 kilos. Having an e-bike instead of a regular MTB really helped me out with my fitness because I believe like most, especially in the beginning, I would probably be getting too tired and giving up in the first 30 minutes. With the e-bike assist, mainly in lower settings, I was able to do 1and a half to 2 hours of bicycle every day. Did around 4000 kilometers last year. And of course, the more I do the less assistance I need now since I’ve built up my endurance. For me an e-bike is an awesome way to get fit.

Fitness improvement is relative to how you are riding, regardless of bike type. Put simply, unless you push yourself outside your comfort zone, you won't improve your fitness regardless of what type of bike you are on, analog, with or even moto. But that is everyone personal choice.

I’m not talking about fat… I’m talking about my heart and my mind! (And I have recently had a full hospital heart testing ecg etc etc blah blah with a full clean bill of heath). Mind: you say a fun ride… well hey, I can keep up or go faster that the 30year olds up hill so yeah man, that it’s not only fun but that it works my heart! Fun: I get to decent without having to pay for uplifts (Dutch scotchman talking now) Fun: I’ve gone places I would never have gone on an AMtb but now on an EMtb (full power) I go everywhere!! See everything, want to go out riding in any weather, want to ride any trail… big jumps, (mini dream Queenstown, rocky tech, Zoot - Carry On, XC Coronet Loop, Chainless race, McNearly Gnarly and so so much more!) horses for course ms but this has given me a new lease on life!

single speeding on my non-Ebike is the ONE thing that actually made me ride faster... It forced me to fight for momentum, keep my pace up, and climb with a higher overall velocity. Single speeding also helped me learn to pace myself (re-harvesting energy by not pedaling during slight downhills) for longer rides, and actually allows me to ride further distances in the dirt.

    • @Daffy0208
      @Daffy0208 Před měsícem

@jmo2752 to be fair ... the network that own them have been doing that for many years. With a bit of imagination that isn't difficult to do ... however, my point was not that they were running out of ideas but that it is either the way the market is going (all bikes having some sort of power or motor), or the way the large bike manufacturers want it to be. There's far more money and opportunities for new features when it is integrated with technology, and therefore new models and upgrade your bike to the new model. Regular bike upgrades/updates are more limited. Once that transition has happened .... you'll be buying your bike on a subscription model with the opportunity to upgrade to the latest model when it's released. That will change how upgrades and new models are released. Having said all of that, the manufacturers will have to get their environmental and sustainability policies in place before they move to that model.

consider buying your own Ebike motor and battery, and put it on a 10yr old mountain bike with hydraulic brakes - if you're not mechanical have a mechanic assemble it for you for 100 bucks, it's not that hard to do. - keep in mind this channel is legit trying to frame this to you as an advert and wants you to pay $9000 for their advertised brands when you can establish a better bike yourself for around $2500 - far be it from me from telling you how to spend though, the thing that's nicer about the older bikes is the components work well enough, and are cheaper to replace, repair people are better suited to repair them too where as on newer bikes they probably won't have parts/try to extort you cuz of your expensive bike. - my ultimate point is think about what you could get with your $6500 extra - you could buy a top end road bike and smoke 99% of guys half your age through pay to win alone! :') - maybe the money figure I'm giving isn't a 1 to 1, but it should be close enough to the idea I'm putting out there.

It's absolutely improved my fitness and I've lost nearly 2 stone since i bought it last year. Prior to that, my hard tail would get run outs at the weekend, but it took too long to ride a curcuit during week days.

I'm riding 3 times a week in non super hard trail, 31km and I do it in 1.15h more or less 21-23Km/h pace, so I think eBikes let you put massive effort and ride as fast as you can in a less time that it would take in a regular bike, BUT you must push hard in your legs to maintain cadence and pace so from that cames the final effort.

Fitness is found in the gym and trail running for me. There's a reason why there is more, much more equipment in the gym other than a stationary bike. Likewise, there is more, much more to actual fitness than simply pedaling some bicycles around.
MTB, SL, EMTB. It doesn't really matter. Just go out and ride whatever brings you the most joy. Remember, this sport was berthed by some guys partying on a hill side and riding beach cruisers down it. This sport was made to be fun and not taken so seriously. Cheers,

I'm starting my first year of mountain biking after several years of sedentary lifestyle, and having a cheap e-bike (as in $300 to $500, not the usual meaning of "cheap" in the MTB industry) alongside the analog bike helps a ton for building endurance by staying in the second cardio zone. On the analog bike I can train for a good while, but it's mostly anaerobic because I'd have to pedal so slowly that I fall off the bike to keep my heart rate low. The e-bike has also become my full-time grocery vehicle, and is generally just a much more enjoyable way to get around town and explore. As usual, it's horses for courses, so don't buy into the comments that treat it as an all-or-nothing ordeal. If you're getting outside more and sitting in your car less, that's a huge win for everyone.

People with e-bikes tend to ride more than people with standard bikes. That’s all bike riding though not just recreational riding. Which is important because people with e-bikes aren’t necessarily hitting the trails more often, but they are driving less. They are more likely to ride their ebike for a trip that would have historically been done via a car. So overall they get more mileage and time a on the bike than standard riders.

I didn't ride the acoustic bike as much as I was riding the ebike. I never learned to like climbing on the acoustic so without the assist, the acoustic bike as just a suffer fest. There is a series of flow trails near my office. If I bring the acoustic bike, I have 1 lap in me and burn 1500 calories and don't really have much fun on the down because I used everything for the climb. If I bring the ebike, I burn 1000 calories per lap on ECO mode, but I have something left over for the downhill which I then have a lot more fun on. Oh, but I can then do 3-5 MORE Laps, so I end up burning 3000-5000 calories and have an absolute blast riding.

Switched from enduro 2021 Canyon strive to Canyon Strive:ON, and will not got back to acoustic enduro bike. I will add a Downhill bike to the stable for all the lift assisted bikeparks. I simply like the fun of riding. Saving energy on the uphill to smash the downhill is a win for me with e-mtb.
Each will have their resons. My biggest issue was (according to my garmin watch) that I was overreaching on every ride on my accoustic bike, but now I can keep most of my riding in zone 3.
At the end its all about fun, people talking down on emtb is just silly, you aint a proffessional mountainbiker, chill out and enjoy the ride.

When I tried an eBike I thought Eco was plenty of power to assist me because I am in relatively good shape. I also downshifted into the easier gears on bigger climbs, so even the smaller amount of Eco assist made a huge difference. That was on a bike that was nearly 60 pounds! All I could think when riding it was that I wish the bike was lighter, especially on the downhills. To me, a bike like this Orbea is an excellent idea. I never cared for Turbo mode on a regular eBike. Sure, it was fun to use it and just easily power up a steep climb, but it provided little to no benefit for me fitness wise. So I did most of the climbs in Eco. I think I would like a bike like this, mostly because it's much lighter and I honestly wouldn't need all the much assist.

if you're over weight, or have a disability - an Ebike will get you some exercise, and yeah you'll lose some weight because you're spending time not engaging in habits that gained you the weight in the first place. If you're a person trying to train their already somewhat established cardio system, no an ebike is not going to get you to a next level, but it can help maintain your current level with less strain on your tendons, and muscles during recovery days. - I ride my Ebike on days where my muscles, and joints can't take anymore, and that's where it's truly helping me still get out and keep up routine. Cardio is the best way to lose weight, and on an Ebike you'll be doing way less of it/likely won't even go to 50% of your bodies limit.

If you're super fit and young... you can push an Emtb WAY WAY harder than a regular bike because of the stuff you can climb and the amount of laps you're gonna do. I prefer the SL it's the best of both worlds.
