    Glad you both liked it. I think, for me, the most important aspect of the film is the idea of trauma. The reaction to trauma and how it gets passed on to other generations. Michael, The Shape, is trauma personified. You said a few times that you thought Laurie's reaction was "far fetched", but you seemed to ignore that her trauma was something beyond the norm. I'm not even speaking of a mad man who killed her friends and tried to kill her, it is beyond that. The first film made it clear or should have: He is NOT HUMAN. Although he never spoke and barely moved, his first Doctor (Loomis) became obsessed with the idea that he was evil incarnate. His next Doctor became so obsessed with understanding him that he was willing to do anything, even kill. How could such a character, who never speaks, have had such an affect? This is a film about he affected EVERYONE. He is called EVIL, THE BOOGEYMAN, exc., but what all of this means, really, is that he is something more (and less) than a man; an element. Evil, trauma, fear. He never runs because he doesn't have to. Anyway, I agree that the first film is more.....scary, creepy, whatever word you like. This one is more intense, more menacing. I enjoyed both quite a bit (none of the other sequels work as well and some are absolutely awful). By the way, the next two films all take place on the same night. So, all 3 will take place almost in real time, over about a 12 hour period. Should be fun.

      Generational trauma is a real thing. Trauma in general is getting much better exposure/de-stigmatized, and being depicted in a more realistic way these days. Not so much in this film, but I do like the idea of 'generational trauma via 'The Boogeyman'. It's a neat conceit.

    Did you listen through the end credits? First, there's a song called "Close To Me" that is written in part by Jamie Lee Curtis and John Carpenter. I think it was a song that they made up during the filming of the original. But also *spoiler* you hear Michael Myers breathing at the end.

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks Před 3 lety +13

      Yes, it's the bit Laurie sings after she's dropped off the key at the Meyers house. John Carpenter wanted her to be singing to herself, but they had so little money they couldn't license a song, so he asked her to just make something up, and that was the basis for the song. You can also hear it on the radio near the start of this film when the father and son are talking, right before they come across the bus.

    Since others have pointed out all the big connections, I'll reference one not many people know about: Laurie's granddaughter Allyson has a boyfriend in the movie, Cameron. He's the douchebag who kisses another girl, but ultimately he seems to survive as we don't see him again.
    Cameron's full name in the script is Cameron Elam, and he's described as the son of "Lonnie Elam". Lonnie is the kid in 1978's Halloween who bullies Tommy Doyle into dropping his pumpkin by joking about the bogeyman, saying "He's gonna get you".
    The good news is that douchebag Cameron will be seen again in Halloween Kills (2021), and so will Tommy Doyle. Which means we can not only expect some sort of Tommy Doyle redemption moment (perhaps even involving Lonnie himself), but we can also be pretty sure little douchebag Cameron will suffer a deservedly gruesome death after all 😂

Because it is clear that this is a plot device being used as a way for Michael to get to Laurie's house. I think it's better without because he's hyped up by reputation. Michael in actuality is just a human, he isn't a demon, ghost, or zombie with super powers. He's a regular guy that is criminally insane. That part of Halloween has always made it more scary than Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street to me. Laurie didn't go to a camp or somewhere she shouldn't have been, he parents didn't murder someone, she wasn't a piece of shit to a person to someone etc. She was a regular girl that a maniac decided he wanted to kill her and her friends. The simplicity and realistic nature (to an extent) of being at home doing what you regularly do and someone breaking in to murder you for reasons no one can guess is truly terrifying. I think the doctor being obsessed with why and what he's really like is kind of a jab to the fans because he is some of us. Everyone wants to know why, they want to see him talk, they want to see him do something different, they build him up as being more than just a man, and want to see him have some kind of powers. And Michael is just like fuck you; this is what I am there doesn't need to be anymore. I dig it!

      @Cinema Rules How awesome !!!
      I have three that I have been hoping you'd react to.
      1. Storm Of The Century ( Stephen King )
      2. The People Under The Stairs ( Wes Craven )
      3. Mystic River ( Clint Eastwood )
      You two can decide which one you'd like to watch.
      ♥️

    You should react to Halloween H20 it was almost bigger than this film at the time for being 20 years later and being post Scream.

    Great video. Love the reactions and your takes at the end both comparing it to the original as well as becoming it's own film. If I had one critique it would be just put your phone away for the duration of the film. Was a little disappointed that Tom missed the broken neck scene because he was staring at his phone. Other than that, terrific entertainment, thanks fellas!

      Totally agree, I have always had a pet peeve with films, that if you're watching one for the first time there is no reason to have your face in your phone, you can just miss good story beats and moments! And doing it in a theater just infuriates me to no end. Total lack of respect for everyone around you, ignorant as fuck

    I am STUNNED that you liked this better than the original. I could barely force myself to stay in the theatre, and I am a HUGE Halloween fan. I also wish you guys would've viewed "Halloween: H20" before you did this one!

    The awkward comedic moments/writing took me out of a lot of the tense moments of this film. The father in the movie was just an idiot and shouldnt have been there in the first place, along with the Dr Sartain twist being a major mistake. Overall was a good sequel but didnt live up to the hype for me.

    Better than the original? Blasphemy! :P Haha, jokes aside, the original Halloween is my personal all-time favorite horror movie, but that's probably because I saw it when I was 12 and it scared the living heck out of me. It had a profound impact on me and on my love for horror movies general. I can understand that you two prefer the 2018 Halloween since it has better effects, better acting and better writing overall. I do think it is among the best sequels, perhaps arguably THE best sequel, although my mind is not set on that (I think Halloween 4 and Halloween H20 might also take that honour). That said, I do have my issues with this one. The comedy aspect, I find, clashes with the serious and gritty tone of the murders and the film's general esthetic, and I find it jarring. For example, a movie like Scream perfectly pulled off the comedy with the scares, but Halloween 2018 just doesn't get that balance. I also agree with Shaun here that the premise of this movie is very far-fetched, and I kind of dislike how Michael Myers is practically treated like a legend, despite the fact that this movie retcons all of the others.

    Now I'm curious what you guys would think of Halloween 20 years later. (H20) Oh, and please don't ever watch Halloween Resurrection...the worst Halloween film by far imo. (Actually, your reaction would be funny to see tbh)

    • @timloader
      @timloader Před 3 lety +2

      I actually thought Resurrection was the first Michael Myers movie that actually did something different rather than the same general plot over and over again. It also had a bit more fun than the others. I think Halloween 6 Theatrical version is worse.

      @@timloader oh yeah Halloween 6 was just God awful. Total slap in the face to the franchise. Idk though ressurection is not far behind it. I didnt feel like it brought anything of substance to the story at all. And killing Laurie that way was a total slap in the face to the character. Much better ways to not include JLC than to have her fall off a damn building.
