The Science of Distance Running

  • This week Reactions is taking a look at the chemistry behind marathon running. The science that goes on in athlete's bodies is pretty neat. Athletes push their bodies for miles and deal with cramping, dehydration and every runner's worst fear: that extreme form of fatigue called "hitting the wall." Why is endurance running so difficult? With the New York City Marathon kicking off this Sunday, Reactions runs through the science of distance running: why muscles burn, how sweat cools the body and the chemistry of runner's high.

I started running during covid started I wasn't trying to stay home..
I was at 315 pounds.. running was hard I couldn't even do a mile. I would get tired by every block.. it was hell.
I kept pushing and now I weight 155 pounds I am 6 feet tall and I can do 4 miles without stopping.. sometimes I push it for more at times I can do 5 miles. In under 45 mins. I love fucking running. It's amazing..

New runner, just did 10K for the first time yesterday! 1 hr 4 min. Goal is to work up to a half marathon eventually. Biggest advice I could give, do not go too fast! Find your comfortable pace!! I’m doing a 9-10min per mile pace & that feels good but when I started I was doing 7 min & couldn’t last. It’s OK to go slower! 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♀️

All you need are a good pair of running shoes and some running clothes, and you're good to go. During a marathon the body starts running low on glucose about 1 hour in, after 1 hour you should try to take an energy gel or bar every 30-45 minutes in order to replenish glucose stores, this also keeps your stomach working stopping you from throwing up.

What is more, elite athletes try to train their bodies to start burning fat sooner in the race in order to have that source of energy from as soon as possible (fats are really aloric, they give much more energy than glucose).

fully agree, it is kinda misinformation by skipping arguably more important aspect to burning fat for energy in distance running. this makes the video superficial

The Spastic Tiger I agree with you. And let’s face it, the MAJORITY of runners aren’t fat adapted or trying to be. One video can’t cover ALL of running science.
