Sam performs his version of Avicii's "Wake Me Up" in his unique percussive guitar style. Sam Meador is the vocalist and keyboardist of Cinematic Black Metal band Xanthochroid. This video was filmed in his backyard by bandmate Brent Vallefuoco and friend Robert Punya.

The level of vocal-playing separation here is incredible. So many people either dont know that separating vocal timing with hand timing is difficult, or they dont even know that it exists. So many struggle to sing and play syncopated rhythms or melodies at the same time, and this guy nails it.

the tuning is not that hard. use the tuner ( i used the online tuner )
DADGAD is not that difficult of a tuning. Fairly common. Try BDDDDD. That requires more than one set of strings to get right for the first time.
gredangeo you can't set 5 string high the same if you don't use more than 1 set of string

Lame Video Producer Goo Goo Dolls - "Iris" uses that tuning. Among others from that band, they have been using quite of number of various tunings for their songs.

a wide clean vocal range is pretty much required if you're gonna sing metal, they need to be able to consistently belt high notes throughout their songs, notable examples include Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Michael Kiske, and Rob Halford.

I have a question for Sam, I hope he sees this!:D My question is this: when you make your percussive guitar compositions, do you start by putting the guitar in open tuning based on one of the central chords of the song? I noticed in your "Under the Milky Way" cover that there were moments where you could strum while being simultaneously percussive with your other hand. I've always struggled to get started writing percussive stuff that wasn't in DADGAD or standard tuning. Perhaps it's all in the tuning? (I've just been nervous to do tunings that seem extreme or imbalanced.) It also seems that tuning the bottom three strings to have a relationship of a perfect fifth and an octave can be helpful in producing left-hand tapped chords (ex. DAD, CGC.) Is this something that is helpful to you as well when you compose? I've studied a variety of tapping and percussive techniques from different percussive guitarists, but I happen to find your compositions particularly impressive because of how melodically and harmonically well-written they are! And, you SING lol! (Awesomely, might I add!) If you're reading this, I hope to see more of your percussive acoustic stuff, Sam! Keep up the sweet work!:D
Thank you man! For my arrangements of other songs, I typically start out by considering what notes I want to be able to play with natural harmonics and open strings (usually notes I grab from the vocal melody or other melodic ideas in the song) and tune the strings accordingly, then I basically go from there; finding the correct notes to tap in whatever tuning I have created. Typically I will keep the lower 2 strings tuned to a fifth, but from there, it's anyone's guess as to what the other strings are tuned to. But yes, I try not to go too extreme, I just use standard hard tension strings, so I don't tune to tight or too loose. Once I have established a tuning, then I try to work with it; but I never just choose a tuning arbitrarily. I do use DADF#AC# a lot though
