I don’t even remember seeing any stink bugs when I was growing up as a kid. I’m in southern Massachusetts and I see them more and more over the last 5 years or so. 🐜 🐛 🐞
We didn't see them as kids because they are just another recent present from China. Several invasive species came from there, accident, delibreate?
Because they are invasive, and in the last decade have become an issue.
Game here from Asian just like the Spotted lantern fly that is becoming invasive here now also.
Don't forget Asian beetles!
Same here. I am in metrowest MA and they are everywhere.
On a side note. If you don’t want to walk thru your exterior doors and into spider webs, spray some water infused with peppermint oil, all along your outside door frames. Spiders won’t put up their webs there 👍🏻😊
Your video of the electrocuted stink bugs did give me some satisfaction, like a sci-fi movie when the bad guy dies.
I had an unfinished 40 by 32 wood shop. Stink bugs invaded covering the walls. I used the smoke insect killer that you put a bit of water in than leave the building. Added two fans to move air around. The next morning every flat surface was covered with dead bugs. A day later the floor was cleared of bugs. I looked behind a pile of wood to find bug parts. The mice had a feast. The mice were next.
It’s an awful feeling. I’m glad the mice were able to take some of the clean up off your hands. As for the mice, our cat Sage takes care of those!
😮
I’m pretty close to stink bug ground zero and just sealing a tiny crack around a window stopped them from getting in my apartment. I used to get dozens every fall. Nothing like waking up with a stink bug in the sheets with you or crawling on the wall next your head! I would gently grab each one with a tissue and take him to a water park (the toilet).
I moved from the state of Oregon to Wisconsin three years ago. I had never seen a stink bug until I got here; nasty creatures. Thanks for the info, I’ll share it with my neighbors.
We didn't have them till about twenty years ago 😐
WI here also! My house was legit covered with them fall 2023. Gross! Inside was fairly minimal but outside was hideous!
Oh boy, you reminded me it's time to battle again :) They love my tiny shack deep in the woods. It must be a vaca spot for stink bugs, haha but they don't pay rent.
Very clever and practical trap. I'll be adding one to our attic this weekend
Cheers
LOL, it's that Ikea lamp that literally everyone buys right after they pick up some of those Ikea bookshelves that everyone has. Love it!
Right? Upcycle that thing!
My project for today. 🤞 it works, because these little dudes are gross. A bit creepy too. I swear they come towards me when I look at them 😂
As a 12 year pest control veteran, I endorse this video. Talstar P has a cheaper equivalent called Bifen I/T, or even the Compare N Save bifenthrin concentrate is even cheaper than that. Home Defense is the same price as the latter mentioned product but is called a ready to use vs a concentrate. Only use 1 oz per gallon as bifenthrin is a repellent. Used outdoors bifen or talstar will last 3 months and is the stuff pros use.
Thank you. That’s all good information and what we’ve seen researching as well. It’s one of the most effective things we’ve used and definitely one way to deal with fire ants.
What do you think of using deltamethrin instead? Thanks in advance if you could answer this!!
@@RM-jo8gy Thanks! I see that I can use a lot less of it and sounds like it lasts longer.
Love this stuff for fire ants also.
thank you for this video ..
As the sun shines on my
house , this bug is attracted
to the area .. 👍
I'm from Northwestern NC, and the only thing I've found that works, is Olive Oil, mixed with Peppermint Oil and a few drops of water, I spray it all over the window sills, doorways and put the mixture in several bowls all over the house, and it works great, there's no chemical smell, which is a plus for me, since I have smell sensitivity
Thank you. I always use natural methods, never chemicals. I don’t have a problem with stink bugs, but was wondering if boric acid or DE might work.
I've lived in Pacific Northwest my whole life. We grew up with spiders in our houses in the fall, but they have been completely replaced with Stink bugs. Certainly nothing like you've shown in this video but in the early fall I'm finding 2 or 3 a day in my house. Glad to know there are effective solutions as this continues to increase. Thanks for sharing!
I'm in the PNW also and we had so many in the house last year. No matter what I did I couldn't keep them out. I never remember seeing many of them growing up but they have been all over the last few years.
Me too. In Spanaway. I hate them. I just found out they fly.
Try Clove Oil and water In a spray bottle. The oils stick to their outer bodies of any insect. Stink bugs and spiders, mosquitoes, done... just spray early or mid spring. Then spray after a hard rain.. if you spray to much you will see a collection of reddish water if you have a sliding doors to a deck. However, you will see the results in that same water. And the scent of cloves potentiates a proximity or barrier from your entrances.
Nasty smelling buggers. To me, they smell like green apple jolly rancher, so it's bizarre to think that some people enjoy eating something that smells like stinkbug.🤢
We’ve had a few in Northern and Southern California my entire life, that I can remember, at least 60+ years.
Those are likely native stink bugs. They aren’t the same problem.
Welcome to today's episode of:
Danner the Exterminator !
Nice job D. 👍
0:18 "someone please tell me how to get rid of these stinkbugs auuughh"😂😂😂
Thanks, my youngest daughter who is 14 is very phobic of these harmless little critters, I tell her don't come into my room, it's their sanctuary city.
Thanks for this. I don't know what the magic is in 409, but I have been spraying that on them, in and out of my house. It works too.
Yes. There’s lots of stuff they don’t like th me smell of and that’s the basis of many non insecticidal approaches. We just didn’t want to move them elsewhere in and and on the house. They land once in this and worse case they go die somewhere.
I don't let traps do all the work, I hunt down the suckers. I'm practically a member of the EDF. I got a whole arsenal of tools, a cricket cage fly swatter boomCo blaster extendable hand duster, and my most recent addition. An electric squirt gun. Then, I mix up some dish soap and white vinegar in a bucket of warm water. Any I catch in the cricket cage get dumped in the bucket. The boomCo is able to kill them up close if in an unreachable position like a crack. The fly swatter can smack them off window screens and gutters among other places. And lastly, the duster and squirt gun are for dislodging stink bugs from high places no other tool can reach, in the hopes they will land within my range. I do that for a couple weeks and end up with thousands of them dead in that bucket. Not very practical I know, but somebody's gotta do it. To save our mother Earth from any alien attack! From vicious giant insects who have once again come back! We'll unleash all our forces we won't cut them any slack. THE EDF DEPLOYS!!
They're getting really bad here in Kentucky. We used to never see any. Now they're everywhere in huge numbers. We used to have issues with Lady bugs but we don't see those at all now. It's just these dam stink bugs.
Same here in lndiana.
I will say that when you don’t have hundreds, they are funny little guys to watch and they definitely love people!
Our house is surrounded by woods. Thank you for this solution. I’m working with our garage door open, facing South. They are coming in like crazy.
Funny little guys? Wow. Love people? China's curse on the USA.
Try handing a white pillowcase that’s been sprayed with OHD and dryed (wear gloves when handling). Clip it up in the openings or over the windows. They will land on the cloth because it’s so easy to attach too…
I had one hang around for days. He put on a show tight rope walking.
I'm in PA, not far from Allentown, actually. We have dozens of Walnut and Pinocchio trees and thus gazillions of stank bugs. Thanks for the info. Salute
In about 1961 my little 4 yr old sister would get a pie tin and a cup of water, go out park herself in the dirt of our Southern California side yard , mix the dirt and water to make mud pie then she would put black stink bugs upside down all around the top and would be so proud of her stink bug pie! We still joke about it sometimes.
Sounds like my younger brother...but he's 65.
For years we had a horrible stink bug, and ladybug problem. One year I raised chickens. Not many, and I make pets out of them. But since I like to hold and pet them and spend time with them I began noticing that they absolutely loved stink bugs. The next spring I did not have as many bugs, and each spring there were less. Chickens did not like the lady bugs but I suspect that they ate the larva and eggs as the lady bugs disappeared also. Also have not had a flea problem.
BTW the lady bugs aren't lady bugs either. They are another invasive Asian bug. Actually have to be careful, supposedly they will bed down in the roof of the mouths of dogs.
Yep chickens are awesome no more little critters but I live in where I'm not aloud to have any kind of farm animals but 2 houses up they can it ant right thks for sharing
@@annettepoole8193 Well, I think that is awful. I dont think 2 or 3 hens in a cute little coop should bother anyone. Put some chicken diapers on them and call them house pets. Not much different than having a parrot.
This is the best way I have ever heard, hats off to you.
Danner, some of your best work yet!
Another gift from China
I am sooooooo trying this in my gardens at night! they love squash and pumpkins and I fight them every year! Thank you
I love this idea! Roasted stink bug sounds particularly heinous. I found some cat vomit one morning where my cat had eaten one of these disgusting things, I can imagine how awful that would've been 😾
Excellent information! They are aweful! Just had 3 show up in my place this week. Vacuming makes the vacuum stink too! Going to give this a shot.
Great idea for the trap. Glad it's do effective. Here in Oregon BM stinkbugs have hit our Hazelnut crops hard in recent years along with other crops. I'll be sharing this and hope it will help others.
Got to love that asymetrical warfare being carried out by china. What better way to cripple your adversaries than to damage their crops which affects economy.
We’re in British Columbia in Canada. We didn’t ever see them before the last couple of years. This past year has been quite dreadful for them. Can’t wait to try this out.
did it work?
Brilliant! Like you, I have tried everything including spraying them directly with soapy water mixtures with terrible results. Love these ideas! Thanks so much for sharing these awesome tips.
Yes, but spraying hundreds (possibly thousands) results in cleaning up soapy, wet, dead rotting stink bugs. The soapy water becomes part of the mess. Localizing the substance that kills them and letting dry, adhered to the fabric (it’s not a volatile compound), paradoxically exposes us to much less risk. We pick up the aluminum tray and dumped it periodically.
Great video Danner, I hate those things! I started seeing them more and more over the last few years here in Washington state (westside of the state). Not as many as you guys at least not yet.
Stink bugs got on my tomatoes when the drought got bad.I just sprayed them off the plants with the garden hose..Gone overnight. The extension agent advised me they were looking for water..Had no more problem after that.,
In my experience Raid ant and roach in the aerosol can is by far the most effective, longest lasting bug control product for home use. Apparently bugs die from just crawling across it - for 6 months to a year.
Great idea! Thanks! I am in North Carolina and have a lot of maple trees near my house. I also love the Home Defense spray which also killed a lot of fruit flies which invaded my kitchen recently.
Putting out a small cup with a bit of cider vinegar and a drop of Dawn will cut down on those numbers real fast.
I accidentally discovered lanolin repels them when I undercoated my 4runner with Fluid Film. Now I spray it around the house parameter every fall and I only see a few stink bugs rather than thousands.
Thanks for the information. I only live about 2 hours north of Allentown.
Danner, a link from your Dad appeared on my feed, and it’s great! (We grew up together in Jones Valley.)
The lighting in the outro dialog section was really good. All of the upload was very good. Subscribed!
Hey Danner. Love your work 👍
One day at the post office the two young ladies working screamed bloody murder. I run to see who just died or had a baby when I found them huddled in the corner scared to death if a stink bug. So I pick it up and carry it outside, and yeah it got me. About that time a young man walked up to see what was going on and I held out my hand and said smell. So he did, hahahaha. The pure shock on his face was priceless!
I got my husband to make your trap as we have hundreds of stink bugs in our citrus tree, we placed the trap at the base of the tree and were hoping for a similar result you got. Unfortunately it didn't kill 1 bug!!! Not sure why so it seems that this trap only works if it is inside. Thanks for sharing, if anyone has a great result for a trap that works outside, please let me know.😁
Remember, they are trying to overwinter and they are attracted to light, but when given the choice they will move on. You might not know how many you killed, because they landed and then flew onto their goal. On a porch, screen porch, carport, or inside they are almost guaranteed to visit the trap if it’s on and low light/dark. Once they land they will eventually die. Hope that helps.
Talstar is the BEST on any bugs ! I'm in SC and it kills everything! I spray every entry on the outside nothing gets past that stuff , Nothing !
Yes. It’s just a miracle chemical. Decimates fire ants. If you spray the perimeter nothing gets in or dies shortly after entering. And it LASTS for months. We make sure Sage isn’t out when spraying and give it a good chance to dry. It doesn’t have the knock down that other chemicals have, but wow, is it effective!
I had no idea they weren’t native and are invasive. Really appreciate this video. I’m on some serious acreage and I can tolerate them in the outbuildings but I’m not down with any bugs in the house whatsoever.
Yeah I never saw them as a kid. I didn't start seeing them regularly in my neck of the woods until the late 2000s. Had no idea what it was the first time I saw one.
@@eagl3yeYea they are everywhere now and I think its safe to thank china for them too. Me thinks these bugs have had a little help getting established.
Awesome idea! I will be trying this trap out...thanks!!
We did something similar for a flea problem. Used a metal round cake pan. My husband used some scrap wood to make an "X" to rest in top of the pan. At the crosspoint he put a short dowel. Onto the dowel we inserted a cheap Dollar Tree light (just the top part, not the stake). Put water with a bit of soap in it. Placed the whole assembly in various locations throughout the house. Lights came on automatically at night. Fleas dropped in and drowned.
Also put flea protection on our one cat who was a magnet (and allergic) to fleas.
Okay, I will give it a shot. I am being over run. It has slowed down a bit. I have not sealed cracks yet because some are very small and i don't want to mess up the trim. Even as the weather has cooled a bit they are coming out on a sunny day.
Best information by far!!! Ty
Thanks for the heads-up 😮. Michigan is getting them everywhere.
Thanks for sharing, gonna try this. I see them outside on my windows already. Soon enough some will make it inside.
A weighted folded tarp on the south side ground also attracts them. Open after a while and spray with soapy water, brush onto ground, wait for more.
That seems like a lot of work, but having watched them for three years, it’s a great idea. I bet it works well. It might be worth setting up ideal spots and just shake them out on a cold winter day. Thank you!
only thing i would add is be sure to use a bulbs that dont get to hot could burn cloth
Great video. Who don’t got stink bugs lol. Thanks for sharing.
This is genius. Thank you so much.
Up until 3 years ago, we'd get hammered with box elders and ladybugs. I'm glad we don't anymore...but their replacement is worse!
Awesome idea
Nice. You can also use a turkey oven aluminum pan filled with water and a little dawn dish soap. Shine a full spectrum light on it. Preferably cordless to avoid risk of shock
We did that. It became a mess here, but the light does attract them and some percentage land in the liquid! We also build one using the 2 L soda bottles (top cut out and reinserted to make a funnel entrance). They all worked but the soapy water was a mess.
We're going to build a trap for in our campervan today!! Thanks
Thanks!! I'll put this to use.
We have them here in SW Ohio. Seems that a late freeze, early-mid May here, really knocks down their numbers during the subsequent late summer/fall. Although it doesn’t kill them, I found that washing down the house siding with a mild lavender soap solution using a pressure washer significantly reduces the numbers hanging out for at least a week or more (assuming no significant rain).
Yes this is very true. I live in NE Ohio and that's been my observation as well. They seem very sensitive to late freezes. Harsher winters seem to really reduce their numbers too.
Definitely noticed reduced numbers in NE Ohio.
Is that Officer Pat Young ?
I keep my beekeeping suit in a trailer at a local farm. In the fall I have to clean out the suit of stink bugs. I'll have 15 or more in the sleeves
Found some in my gloves by the sawmill yesterday…
wonderful idea, thank you for sharing
The 1st time I saw a stink bug was right after hurricane sandy hit. Bethlehem ny.
I’m from Kentucky. We mix stink bugs with crack & smoke em! We call it crinking!
That answers the reason for brainless young folks!
Thank you so much! I have a greenhouse so I don't want to spray. Excellent idea!
Yes. This keeps the insecticide localized on the cloth. In the few comments on the toxicity potential one should recognize it has a low toxicity to humans, pets and other higher mammals. Even that is mostly limited to the liquid application phase. This is used in kitchens, veterinary clinicians, etc… once it’s dry on the cloth surface it’s not mobile and doesn’t release to the air.
Using it on the perimeter of the greenhouse would still be effective for some pests.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the info.
Great idea.
Great video I think this would work on other types of bugs as well
Building one of these tomorrow! I’m in SE Ky and we are swamped with these things every year.
I've tried a variation of the bright light/pan that has water in it instead of pesticide, which is marginally effective. Terminix can't stop them either... here in SW VA they are really bad. I just ordered a gal of the pesticide- we'll try it. Also, we ID'd a possible entry point on the fireplace wall exhaust vent and are installing a stainless steel mesh screen. What a PITA.
I was out in natural bridge a week ago. My camper was covered in these things. I'd never seen so many before.
I use a 50/50 mix of vinegar and rubbing alcohol they hate kills pretty good to
Thank you so much , they are worse this year we are gonna try it , I’ve been vacuuming them up for weeks
You’re welcome! Make sure you look around for possible entry points and seal them (if possible). We’ve spent hours vacuuming them but it seems every time there’s more back the next day! It also may be a while before the smell comes out of the vacuum. We had a pile outside where we would empty the vacuum stink bugs and it turns out they’re a great fertilizer, I’ve never seen grass that green haha! Good luck
We are in central Alabama. Before 2019, we'd never seen a stink bug. Now, every late spring/early fall they are everywhere! I hate thise nasty things.
Just get a couple cats. My two are stink bug mass murderers.
We got rid of the two full grown trees in our front yard because we wanted to put on solar panels (they created too much shade for panels to be effective), and the stink bugs were jumping from the trees to our house. Never got the panels. Still have stink bugs. We’ll try your idea.
Great ideas!!!
Thanks Danner for the great advice.
You could also put soapy water in the pan. The soap breaks the surface tension and the stink bugs will drown.
But then they become a stinky soggy rotting mess. I think he mentioned he didn’t want to deal with that.
Great video! Very informative!
Thank you!
@@DannerCronise I figured that light would be key. I would hear one flying around in my dark livingroom and it would land on the T.V. or laptop. Yuk. Generally I scoop them up in a medicine bottle to seal up the stink but I just have a few in the house. I'll use your idea here on the farm for sure. Thanks for the video.
I was a trucker and the first time I ever saw one was in my semi in Ohio. I've seen them in my house a few times in Michigan over the last 2 years. We've got a maple in our back yard, a maple in my neighbors front yard, and a walnut behind us
There are tons in Ohio we have days where we have to vacuum the carpet every day we have had about 3 bad days this year we had a early temperature drop but if it gets 65 or warmer and sunny they will be everywhere I think I'll build one of these cant hurt .
Live in southeast MI, they’re annoying
@@Gradeddd that's where I am, but pretty close to Detroit. Maybe they haven't fully invaded this area yet
@@SessaV literally killed 3 today, near rochester
@@Gradeddd:( I'm in royal oak. I am not thrilled to hear they're are that many that close to me
Good job. Gonna try it!
I hope it works out for you. Good luck!!
Use a low power LED light. They do not generate heat.
Stink bugs and Asian lady bugs were never here when I was growing up in the 1970’s-80’s
Age 62 and never saw one of these in ohio until last few years.
You are totally grossing me out, I can feel my gag reflex. Their smell in the vacuum bag by the hundreds is disgusting. We were hit bad last fall for the first time. We had near 1,000 of them indoors. I covered every crack I could find and they still made it in. This spring they came in again. Our new addition was invaded and I was sucking them up in the vacuum. 2x a day+ I’d go out and collect over 50 at a time. So pesky! This summer has been good but they are back on us now in the fall. 80s in October must be prom night! Every evening, they come by the 100s. I’m fed up with them. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll give it a try.
If you go out in the late afternoon, you may be able to find out where they are landing on the house and see them scooting inside under a window or soffit vent. Once they find an opening they signal and all the others come in the same way.
THANK YOU !
Stinkbugs and ladybugs will both ruin your vacuum with the smell alone. Be careful. We have both in Alabama and deal with them like that. Also, check local Co-op or farm supply. Martin's makes some really awesome chemicals that are typically stronger, just as safe used as directed, and much cheaper. And then the video continues and you show what I just said. LOL. Didn't know they weren't native and that explains how bad they gotten over the years. I'm 48 and hardly saw them as a kid that I remember. Good stuff.
Oh and Japanese beetles. They've also gotten bad here last 10-15 years.
Yes. Ladybugs. Nasty little things. Bifenthrin zaps those little beasts as well. They also like bright surfaces and the trap catches a lot of them too.
Don't confuse American lady bugs with Asian lady beetles. AmericanLB's are good and don't overwinter indoors. AsianLB's are bad and do invade homes. They are easy to distinguish. Check them out online.
I get stink bugs in my home from time to time. I generally will pick it up and check it out as it crawls on my hands. They are amazing w their shield of armor.
I have never once smelled one being stinky. I have no idea what that smells like!!
Live in Michigan.
Well let me tell you this....squish it and you will never want to smell it AGAIN!
Those large zappers may make them stink, but if you just have a small infestation like I do and get one here and there, use one of those handle zappers that kind of look like a small tennis racket. If you just zap them enough to die, no smell!
Now of course it's hard to use that on them if they aren't flying, so what I do is "walk" them onto it, or bump them off the wall with something nearby while I hold the racket underneath for them to land on. If you bump them from underneath or towards the sides, they will fall every time. Quick zap and in the trash! But we have too many to mess with that every time, we actually just use like on old empty seasoning jar/container, and scoop them from underneath with it, pop it in the freezer. Voila! You get creative when you've become accustomed to greeting them every year in spring and fall.
My mom has had a boxelder bug problem for years near her front door. When the weather is cool they find the warm microclimate created by the architecture and the exposure of the house. One of the last times I was there I noticed around 20 (ballpark estimate) congregated around the front door. As I lingered, I noticed one that was caught in an old spider web. Rather than let him suffer, I carefully removed the webs until all of his appendages were free and he was moving normally. It took more than 10 minutes of surgical precision. The funny thing is, when I got done the rest of the boxelder bugs were gone. I have seen one since; and I greeted him by letting him crawl onto my finger. After years of squishing and spraying, it would appear that the war is over. Life has won.
What?
That T siding has grooves that allow bugs into attic area in shed
Plus window and doors are tacked into openings
1) get 1/2 foam insulation board and cover outside and pull the roof and place a layer under roofing metal (this is remarkably quick with a helper)
2. Tape all by seams and doors and windows
3. Cover foam board with continuous plastic. Taped foam board should be enough on roof.
4)cover the walls with 1/2 inch T-siding and treat withsealer
4) rip a 5/4to place under eave at top of New T sheet
( you should have overlap of plastic sticking out the edge when in place)
6) you may have to cover gable end walls with flexible foil insulation inside
Foam board is about 14 dollars a sheet. I did my whole shed for under a 100 bucks
You will save so much money on HVAC and be so confortable in summer and winter and bugs can’t get in
Thanks awesome trap
They are insane in Oregon (Willamette Valley) in the spring. Our house was blanketed a couple years ago. Couldn’t go outside for weeks. We’ve been successful with Daitomaceous earth. We put it in crazy hot spots like our garage and on the deck.
DE does work to keep them from nesting. We are looking at that as part of a larger strategy of the insulation and board & batten siding that will be coming in future episodes! Thank you!
I live in a townhouse in Oregon and they have gotten crazy in the fall the past couple years on our balcony! We got some wood square decorative tiles that they like to stay in. I was today years old when I found out they were invasive and not native 😂 I just killed one inside and I’m so glad I found this video.
We are in the same area, and have a log home in the woods. The logs have lots of cracks and they love it. I usually start with a shop vac to remove the bulk, then I use a spray. They will die in the shop vac, but be sure to empty it before to long or the stench inside will be nasty.
Also in Willamette Valley - I hate them. I use lavender oil on my vacuum bag to mask the stink. Looking forward to trying these traps. Would be super cool if it works on box elder beetles too.
We put the bug bombs in our outbuilding, took care of business. Also live in Oregon-
Thank you!!!
I had seen displays at stores a year, or 2 before we got stink bugs. They were dedicated to omly stink bugs.
I told my husband we must be going to get stink bugs. 😅
But i seriously dont remember seeing a stink bug before that. And I've always lived in the country, but im sure there had to be a few.
We just started getting those here this fall.
pro tip.... never suck up the dead bugs with a vacuum cleaner unless you enjoy the stink that will remain for quite sometime.
