    My 5Th Gen 4Runner has been on Amsoil since the beginning. Now at 80k. I recently tried Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and Purolator Boss oil filter as it's available at my local Advanced Auto and it significantly reduced the notorious cold start lifter noise in this engine. I was quite surprised. After 3 weeks, it was almost not noticeable. Amsoil will now be my 2nd choice.

  • @johndorrell1

    Congratulations, Grasshopper, you have taken the next step towards enlightenment. Agreed that Amsoil is currently the best motor oil available to the public. That said, you have been doing your engine a disservice by running it for 12 months. No oil protects from varnish and clogged oil control rings for 12 months of the cold starts, short trips, and low speeds experienced by the average driver for a least some of their OCI. Lab analysis doesn't currently provide that insight. Many learned experts believe that the cheapest oil legitimately meeting current API and ILSAC standards (Costco's Kirkland full synthetic by Warren Industries is one example) and changed at least every 6 months will provide better results in the long run than the most expensive oil changed once a year. And that Fram Ultra Synthetic filter? It has more filter area that an Amsoil filter and filtration specs that currently meet or exceed any other brand-name filter on the market today. Change it every 12,000 miles if you like, and with Kirkland or Super Tech (same oil) in your crankcase every 6 months, your daily driver engine will enjoy superior lubrication and longevity at a thrifty-but-very-smart price. I look forward to watching your journey along this path.

    • @markwarnberg9504
      @markwarnberg9504 Před 10 měsíci

      Agree, as long as the oil meets the ILSAC - ACEA - API standards there is no reason to go outside the owners manuals service recomendation.
      POA group 4 oils were intended for race cars that needed a high ZDDP package, not for commuter cars with Catilisater Converters.

      Yes, I still don't see anyone doing good results on all the brands based on 6 months and 1 year intervals. I might just do it myself and upload some videos. I'm gonna do a test after 6 months with Mobil 1 Extended Performance, next I'll do Pennzoil Platinum Ultra for 6 months. I drive about 4k miles during that time.

    I know you are a long time AMSOIL user, as I myself have been since the eighties. I clicked as soon as I seen what? why is he putting Penzoil in? Did something go wrong? I can hardly believe it. Ha ha! Being a lifetime mechanic by trade, retired racer & gearhead, I have proven AMSOIL to myself many times over. But I get you, if I couldn't get AMSOIL I don't know what I would use. Probably another true synthetic and there isn't very many out there. But I have also heard the latest Penz isn't bad and I might, "I reiterate might, but probably not" consider trying it if I couldn't get my Ams!

    Here we go with the unfair testing again comparing amsoil best oil to a group 3 oil. A fair test would be a Pennzoil Ultra Platinum vs a Amsoil SS. Both oils require you to order online and not always easily accessible. And sorry to bust your bubble Amsoil SS is not 100% synthetic. Just like their XL and OE isn’t but the bottles also say 100%.

    Do you know what Amsoil has changed in their formulation recently? If you read Ratblog540 Amsoil has been the #1 oil and like #2,3 ranking. Ratblog retested Amsoil again recently and the new bottle he got ranks #34 now. Anyone know why?
    Next question and I know I am way behind on this but why did Amsoil oil filters stop using the Donaldson filter media? Please advise.

    • @Vultain
      @Vultain Před 4 měsíci

      I think it may have had something to do with a buyout in the filter industry. Multiple oil filters are no longer at that level. Wix got bought out and is now being made in China.
      The current Amsoil filter is being made by Champion but it's pretty much a Fram Synthetic Endurance. It's still an upper end filter but yeah.
      I don't see a definite best filter at the moment. All of them slid downhill. If you are aware of anything let me know but it does make me wish we could time travel back to the days of the older better filters.

    Amsoil's good oil but not necessary in a street driven vehicle, Pennzoil is just fine for 99% of drivers. PZ actually runs really quiet, quieter than any oil I've tried and that includes Amsoil signature. Amsoil's price doesn't make sense for most drivers either, who's really gonna go 25k miles a change to make it worth it? That'll kill your engine long term. No matter how good it is, oil breaks down, fills with contaminants, water, fuel, etc after so many starts, short drives and temperature changes.
    In racing applications Amsoil can't be beat, it's stout and can take the abuse of high RPM's, heat and internal stress like no other.
