This is actually one of the best reviews I have ever seen. Your honest approach pays dividends. So refreshing. What a cracking buy this guitar is. It sounds great. However pointing out the downfalls makes me want to buy it more because there would be no disappointments. The price is unbelievable. Importantly the tone and intonation sound spot on. I wish other reviewers would take this approach and it's also bold for this manufacturer to commission this review.
Reviewers....... let's hear a few more of the pitfalls, please. No disrespect intended.

I'm thinking about the Donner Dst 152 model. I definitely like that it has HSS and the second tone know is push pull to split the bridge and middle pickup. Even as a strictly novice I would change the tunners as done here, plus change out the pickups to Seymore Duncan's and maybe the pots to 500. I've also looked at the Fender stratocaster player series, but it's not HSS. It doesn't let you split the bridge and middle either, but it can't because it's only a SSS. The plus model does but it's a little over a thousand dollars. The Prs Se sliver sky is another great guitar, but it too is only SSS. The thing I know is almost any budget guitar will sound fantastic in an expensive amp. So as a novice who is semi-retired and wanting to learn the guitar, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the review.

On the tuner screws, any time you have a screw a bit smaller or it’s not biting, take a toothpick and put it in the hole, then break it off. The screw will bite quite well with just a little bit of toothpick. Works well for any type of wood screw.

I've always wanted to play guitar but never had the time to invest. I've just purchased this and I am very much looking forward to it. Very good and honest review and I will probably follow your advice about the tuners. My son has the same guitar so it will be good for both of us.

Check you tuner. If it's the same as packaged with other inexpensive guitars, it can be used for different instruments. Make sure it's set on guitar.

They should get rid of the trem bridge and put a stop tail or cheap wrap-around one on there. Take the savings of the trem and time wasted routing out the back of the guitar and put it into the tuners. They could also pinch pennies if they just painted it one solid color too.

  • @Markle2k
    @Markle2k Před 2 lety

The amp battery is probably a Lithium pouch cell or an 18650 cylindrical cell. They come charged to a shipping charge because completely flattening them damages them. So does _leaving_ them at a full charge, so it wouldn't be shipped fully charged either. Pouch cells and 18650s are readily available online, so they could be easily replaced when worn out or upgraded to get more playing time.
A TP4056 charging circuit board with USB that inputs 5 volts is worth maybe 75 cents in parts, in volume. The boards often come with a battery protection circuit that prevents the battery voltage from dropping too low in use by shutting off power. The rechargeable battery is a good feature that doesn't add much to the cost of the unit and isn't included on more mainstream offerings like the BOSS Mini or Blackstar Fly.
The monochrome tuner I got from Donner with my ukulele is better (accurate and responsive) and has more (useful) features than my Snark. The jaw opening is too narrow to get regular use on a guitar, though.
Earlier this year I bought a Donner Tele-alike without the amp/tuner/capo and it came tuned up a fourth! The low E was just flat of B. The A was a D. The D was a G. The unwound strings were tuned up between a major and minor third. This didn't seem to hurt the neck at all, but it was a bit disconcerting to think that this thing probably travelled from the factory in China and then sat in a warehouse for quite a while like this. The strings came pre-stretched, I guess?
The intonation was set by eye, not by ear. The action was actually in the usable range, if uneven. And the fret ends were the right length, but not dressed.
The finish looked pretty nice when it came out of the gig bag. The sunburst was even and the finish was polished well enough to read text reflected in it without distortions. A nice first impression. There are some tiny splotches of dark dye on the side of the headstock that don't belong there. But the finish is not very durable. There is a little ding on the corner between the upper and lower bout that I have no idea how it got there. It has never had anything dropped on it as far as I am aware.
The hardware looks low-rent in many places, but the tuners have less lash than the ones that came with my American Strat a couple of decades ago.

Donner makes some cool gear, I got a Donner Revecho pedal it’s super cool and soo affordable.
Will they stick with it? So glad I did. Mom said when I started bringing it in the bathroom with me they knew it wasn’t just a phase. (The phase was the sound from putting the solid body guitar body on the cast iron tub as a resonator, it sounds almost lo fi univibe )

Bought one of the Donner acoustics and it had the worst tuners I have ever experienced. Dead spots as you said but all the tuners go 10 cents or more flat within a few hours. I kept tuning it every day for a week to let the neck settle in but nothing changed. The tuners only stayed in tune less then an hour. In the states, Wilkinson tuners are around 23-40 US dollars and they are a REQUIRED upgrade if one buys a Donner.

! ! ! I've seen cutting strings off done even by guitar techs of major bands, but its not such a good idea. You go from 100 kg of pressure to 0 in seconds. If you unwind the strings, the guitar at least has a chance to adjust smoothly to the change.

I think if they just saved the money on accessories and put it into the guitar it would be a superior instrument. I could see a lot of people giving up because of the tuners and trem.

I think beginners might benefit from a capo because they can practice chords and scales on, say, the 5th or 7th position, which requires less stretching, and so it's a bit easier (maybe less string tension too?). When they master it a bit, they can lower the capo to 3rd or even do without. This may hold for the young ones with smaler hands even more. Sometimes, I'm over 18, I even do so when trying to learn of figure out something difficult.

I bought their T-Type guitar. I think I paid an extra $5 for shipping insurance. The guitar was delivered with a big finish gouge. I contacted them, they sent me another one and told me I could donate the first, they didn't want it back.
With that said both guitars are trash. The springs on the saddles do not provide any tension at all. They literally rattle when I play. Both had major finish issues.
Both played like trash and needed string height adjustment as well as major intonation job.
... With that said, I only got it cuz it was $100 and I planned on removing the upper half of the frets like Tyler from Music Is Win's half-fretless PRS.

@@EytschPi42 I think you're making the best of something bad.
This video stands up for someone who has already bought a guitar with shitty tuners or a shitty trem and says, "this is how to make your purchase not suck."
I applaud your efforts so that kids can have a good experience trying to learn guitar. But Donner really missed the mark, a beginner pack like this has to be ready to go, not needing probably €80 of work (€40 if you do it yourself) to make it usable.
Plus if a wiggle stick is fitted it should be usable FFS.

Don't curse in your videos, especially when addressing parents.

I'll say he's still being honest. I've bought one just to check out. He doesn't hold back and he's honest.

you should have continued and see what I critique and how I upgrade the guitar IN THE PAID VIDEO.... and if you think ANY channel on a certain level does not get paid to do the work, then you are delusional! Sorry... but this is how this works... the difference is wether or not the honesty remains. If you knew me and my channel you'd know that I cannot be bought!

How many more "amazing for the price" throwaway guitars and beginner sets after 30 years of "I can't believe this is under 200 bucks" throwaway guitar sets made in a totalitarian communist country does this world need? Do you think Chinese kids can get hold of such a guitar when their parents live a) in the backcountry and b) do not agree with the government? Any channel that's shilling such crap so aggressively ("coupons below for even better deals") is outing themselves as a total sellout and losing their creds instantly.
