Estonian Cultural Film Tour no. 79 Tallinn Before and Now, 1939, cinematographers: V. Parvel, K. Märska, N. Envald
This film about the development of Tallinn is based on a comparison of the contemporary and earlier cityscape. The cityscape of "before" comes from the film "Beauty of Tallinn" (1924), which captured objects in poor condition so that the achievements of the 1930s would be more visible. The comparison is also reinforced by the poor quality of the 1924 original film.

To be fair, the Estonian in this video also sounds hilarious to Estonians. :D It's extremely oldfashioned (well, obviously) in both the vocabulary and the narrator's manner of speaking/accent. Ja suomen kieli kuulostaa yleensä myös hassulta virolaisille, kuten viro teille... Mulle ei, mutta ainoastaan koska puhun sitä kieltä.

It so happened that linguistically they are closer to the Finns but genetically they rather are closer to Latvians. Of course, this does not prevent people from being friends.

To me, it seems Tallinn has changed more in the past few years than the previous 70! Lots of new, mostly not very good, buildings going up! Glad that the factory chimneys are now city "decoration"!
Why? In Tallinn previously were many factories, which gave jobs. Currently no industry in the country, 70% of GDP is from services, not sure if it is good for the country.

Great video. Visit to Tallinn was our family's first "foreign" trip outside Latvia in the early 1980s. Great childhood memories. I wanted ice-cream. But did not want to ask in Russian for it in the shop. So I asked in Latvian for "saldējums" and Estonians understood that.

Funny, my mom told me the same thing about her travels to Riga in the 70's. For example, in the city she and her friends asked for directions from someone first in Russian and saw that the reaction from that person was not very friendly, then they quickly said something in Estonian, even if the Latvian didn't understand it. But that person understood that my mom and her friends were Estonians, so he became friendly and told my mom & co what they had asked for (and that was probably in Russian again). So my mom learned that in Latvia it's better to say smth in Estonian first and then continue in Russian. :)

you are not wrong... could be that Finnish is Estonian dialect with funny accent. :D just kidding, name of language group is baltic-finn or finnobaltic (never had to think about it in english, not sure), so Finnish dialect it is :) (i am Estonian)
The modt closest language for Finnish is Estonian language. I can understand some of the words but then there's something that I don't understand.
@@saarinenj1 The closest language to Finnish is Karelian, actually. Some of the dialects are mutually intelligible with Finnish, whereas Estonian not so much (somewhere in-between completely incomprehensible and mutually intelligible).

Fun fact, when the Baltics were annexed, they were the most developed part of the USSR, however everything which was valuable or belonged to a rich man was grabbed and "shared" to Stalin and the rich people were shot. Estonia, alongside Latvia and Lithuania, became a hell once USSR annexed. Soviets fucked us so badly, that when the Germans arrived, the historical archenemies of Estonians as they slaved the estonians for 700 years, suddenly were forgived and instead, USSR was able to make Estonia become friends with its old enemy and become Estonian archenemy

Even in Estonia, in addition to the pogroms in Lithuania, Latvia, the Ukraine and Poland, where it is commonly known, the German occupiers successfully succeeded, launching pogroms against Jews with the help of some of the Estonian population. This massacre in Tallinn is a fine example of unknown terror.

Гарне відео. Довоєнна Естонія була теж гарною. Шкода що не показаний порт у Таллінні. Цікаво як він виглядав у 1939? На 04:25 є вивіска фірми SIEMENS, яка зараз продукує багато різної техніки. Шкода, що Естонія потрапила під окупацію у 1940. Це сильно загальмувало розвиток Таллінна та й взагалі усієї Естонії. Вітання з України!

Бельгарда по поводу настроений красноармейцев, написанных по свежим следам в ноябре 1940 г. в Финляндии, куда они с женой и детьми бежали из Таллинна, говорится следующее: «Отношение красноармейской массы к происходящим событиям было весьма своеобразно. Все приказы начальства выполнялись с тщательной точностью, демонстрации эстонских коммунистов охранялись нарядами красноармейцев, но общее настроение по отношению к происходящим событиям было враждебно. Смотря на демонстрацию, красноармейцы говорили: «голодать захотели - советские порядки заводят». Слышались выражения вроде того, что «с жиру бесятся», «чего еще людям нужно». В сущности, происходило трагическое недоразумение: Красная армия безусловно перевороту не сочувствовала, но он осуществлялся только благодаря ей» (Бельгард 2005: 210).

i dont think it has a simple meaning. i think it is an outcry(!), which can range from something negative to positively surprised. anger, disappointment, surprise or brave joy.
