  • I'm working on some serious upgrades for this little 3018 pro machine, I wanted to get the power supply situation straight first and realized that the original power supply is pretty much the weakest part of this little machine and start using the power supply for the machine before I originally planned to. I lightly modified some power supplies to adjust the voltage to the levels I wanted, not sure how safe it is, but so far so good. At the end I show some footage of my machine losing steps making a part and I do a comparison between the original and the new power supplies.

I wanted to upgrade my steppers to stop the lost steps problem but I think just the power supply did it. I'm definitely getting those little $3 voltage meters for these power supplies though, went to cut a part and the dang wood started burning, no fire but lots of smoke and dark wood chips, the voltage must've migrated up towards 36V and above 36V might hurt the control board

Maybe a horsepower issue from the motor? Seems like it's the equivalent to a palm router, which will bog down and do weird things through 3/4" material

now that i think about it it was pretty common for the steppers to lose steps when i was at least 2 hours deep into a job, I'm really thinking the power supply was dropping current or voltage or both to the point that the stepper motors torque really suffered. the spindle is not great but the lost steps was more the steppers themselves, i'm thinking that maybe this power supply is not equipped to do 14 hour jobs like i've done recently and is dying. Either way it is inadequate for a CNC machine. Now a big ol power supply running under it's rated voltage in a metal case with a fan if it wants it should work better

@@OGmolton1 hell yeah. I just know my 1/4in palm router struggles with anything 3/4". I have a 2 3/4hp router with half inch Collett, it will breeze through 3/4"

@@ojmcbaggins yeah, I strictly work with the tiny baby collet, that thing sounds like a beast. it's 3/4" but it's only doing 1.5mm at a time
