  • Arabianranta + Toukola + Vanhakaupunki from above!
Relieve some stress by exploring some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Helsinki, Finland from the bird's-eye perspective of a drone.
Today we're flying over three interesting neighborhoods that are right next to each other, and a walk through (or flight above) them is a true pleasure. Arabianranta (or Arabia), Toukola, and Vanhakaupunki gather history, nature, and design in the same area.
We'll start in Vanhakaupunki (Gammelstaden in Swedish), meaning "old town" since Helsinki was originally founded in this area, in 1550, to compete against Tallinn for the commerce of the Bay of Finland. The city was moved to the peninsula in 1640 and Vanhakaupunki was slowly deserted. We will visit the Vantaa river and its waterfall by the old hydropower station, and the rapids. Those water rapids (fors in Swedish), are the ones that give name to the city in Swedish: Helsingfors. We'll take a glance at the Technology Museum before flying towards the pedestrian bridge by the river mouth as people fishing and jogging enjoy the warm sun.
Our tour of Toukola (Majstad in Swedish) will begin at the impressive gardens of Annalan huvila, a villa originally founded in 1826; and then continue along Hämeentie street. Our flight will focus on the modern architecture of the neighborhood, but if you decide to visit don't hesitate to check out the older part, full of wooden houses. After taking a look at the newer buildings of the city's vocational school campus in this district, we'll move along Arabiankatu street to enjoy the modern residential buildings, Tapio Wirkkala art park, and the Pop & Jazz Conservatory. Soon after, we will arrive at one of the highlights of our flight together: the old Arabia factory (founded in 1873, currently owned by Fiskars). Before closing in 2016, the factory was once the biggest ceramics factory in all of Europe. The building complex houses facilities for the Helsinki University of Art and Design as well as an interesting museum that is part of the Helsinki Design Museum.
As we cruise above the buildings we won't even notice when we've crossed to Arabianranta (Arabiastranden in Swedish), but it's quite a fascinating district since the City of Helsinki requires all developers in the area to use 1-2% of the building investments of individual sites for works of art. Breathtaking works of art mix with modern buildings by the park that separates the sea from the city. We'll make sure to fly close to some of the most interesting buildings (check out that facade graffiti!) as well as the entrance of the shopping center and the Arcada university of applied sciences campus. Make sure not to wake up the lions! We'll end our flight with a quick look at the primary school and a general panoramic view of the seaside park - definitely one of the best in town!
If you're curious about more neighborhoods, don't forget to subscribe!
Now sit back, relax, and enjoy our flight together. Tervetuloa!

@@HelsinkifromAbove Ah ok! There was a guy flying a drone outside the Arabia shopping centre and I thought, "That's a strange place to fly a drone"
