First.
Everyone always does videos about different countries. Even tho the current country borders don't completely correspond to the ethnic cultural and historic borders. Why can't anyone do videos on cultural regions instead? Those videos would talk about topics that many people rarely heard about and that would make more sense to discuss than arbitrary colonial borders. For example like Corsica, Appalachia, Siouxland, Tatarstan, Chukotka, Biafra?

As an American, I can tell any international people reading these comments that Mexicans are the greatest people in the world. So down to earth, so friendly, and have a hilarious sense of humor. I know there are some tragic problems they struggle with but despite that, they have an amazingly rich and diverse heritage and culture. Their incredible cuisine is famous around the world. I have only been directly over the border from Corpus Christy, TX one time, but i cant wait to see more of Mexico's beauty with my own eyes some day. Ive been working to teach myself spanish for years. Its kinda funny how i began learning. I love Mexican food so much and wanted to learn more authentic recipes than the americanized versions I was always seeing. So i started watching abuelita cooking channels in spanish on youtube so i could learn the slow, authentic ways. I ended up not just learning the recipes but the language too. Felicitaciones a mis hermanos y hermanas mexicanos 🙌

As a mexican I can say that Mexico is a country with a bunch of smaller countries within, even if we share a language and many cultural traits there's so much diversity it's still amazes me.

Absolutely! Prehispanic Mexico WAS a bunch of smaller countries. Post-independence Mexico has worked hard to create a common national identity through an inclusive historical narrative, which is difficult to do for so many distinct people groups. It's much like how the EU is trying to create a "European" identity to foster unity.

As a Mexican and translator I can say that what I like most about Mexico is the variety of languages, tongues and dialects that can be appreciated while traveling through it, even if we share a language there is so much diversity of accents and dialects that I would love to get to know them a little better.
I'm from Mexico and I'd say that what I love the most of my country is our friendliness and beautiful culture. It's complicated, even for us, to get to know all the food and traditions that may vary from just one state to another.

My wife is from México and I visit a couple times a year! Always love spending time in different parts of Chihuahua where most of her family live, and occasionally travelling to other estados. Of course, since I'm from New Mexico and live in El Paso, TX, our story isn't rare.
If you live in El Paso you're right next door! I heard that back in the day you could just walk across the border freely, but I doubt that's the case anymore.
@@GEOfocusChannel Yep! That's why I moved back to El Paso. To be literally as close as possible to my wife and her family while we worked on her spousal VISA process (without me needing a Mexican TR-VISA that is).
You can't literally cross the street anymore, but as long as you have an American passport or a VISA it's (usually) quick to cross. El Paso and Ciudad Juárez are linked by a couple of internal bridges that you can either drive or walk over. On foot, the Paso del Norte bridge costs 80¢ roundtrip; you just have to wait through U.S. Customs and/or present yourself to Mexico's INM if you need a permiso for traveling beyond Juárez. Before the pandemic, thousands of people crossed every day for work, shopping, and medical appointments; and now that the border has reopened things are slowly getting back to normal.

@@GEOfocusChannel I'm actually not from there, but I was living there for some time. I recently moved to Tbilisi, Georgia a couple of months ago 🇬🇪. There is just something magical about Mexico that can't be described unless you've been there and experienced it for yourself. 🥰

The smallest volcano in Mexico is the Paricutín with 208 m (682 ft), it was the smallest volcano when it erupted during WW2 and inspired the movie “Volcano”

As a Mexican, I would say that the thing I love the most about my country is its food. And no, it's not just tacos, tamales and enchiladas. Mexican food is so diverse and complex it's almost impossible to know all of its traditional meals. But one thing is for sure: it's hard to rival in terms of flavors. I also love the geography, specially in the region I live in (central Mexico, in the mountains zone of the State of Veracruz, roughly a 3-hour drive from the Pico de Orizaba and about an hour away from El Cofre de Perote, which is Mexico's eighth highest mountain summit). Thanks for the video, and greetings from Mexico!
Two of my favorite cuisines of the world are Mexican and Indian.
I love my country, it's history, culture and people. I feel sad and angry about the drug violence, corruption and ecosystems destruction, but I feel happy when people from other countries come visit and fell in love with México and all the positive aspects.
Paul, I like very much your channels, I learn a lot. I don't remember if you made a vídeo about náhuatl, if don't, It Will be cool if you do It in the future.

In the northern state of Chihuahua, there is a large population of Mennonites, who migrated over the centuries from Germany and the Netherlands eastward to Russia, and then to North America. They speak a version of German called Plautdietsch (Low German, referring to the German lowlands from which they came).
I'd love to visit! My Spanish is getting decent and I think I could interact with Mexicans in a meaningful way.

What I miss most about it is definitely the strong sense of community I felt there. I'm from Mexicali which is pretty big, but everyone in the neighborhood knew each other or was related in some way. That's been hard to find in the US
It's true lots of elderly people is the Yucatan Peninsula speak mayan to avoid being understood by children or tourists.
My grandparents knew mayan but they did not taught it to my dad and so they took the language to the grave.
That’s too bad that they didn’t speak it with your Dad. I bet it’s because they thought Spanish was more beneficial to him, but to the linguist in me it’s a little sad.
I'm from the U.S. but spent a year in Yucatán in 2000-2001 and have been back to visit several times (I love México and especially Yucatán ❤️). I'd sometimes hear people on the bus in Mérida (largest city in Yucatán) speaking Maya. A teenage friend, who lived in a small town, could not speak Maya but knew some words and phrases, while her mom could speak Maya at a basic level and her aunt was fluent in Maya (and Spanish). Her grandma was also fluent in Maya and Spanish, while her great grandma did not speak Spanish (just Maya). I suspect that my friend's children know just a few words in Maya. The Maya/Spanish language scenario reminds me very much of U.S. immigrants' loss of language through the generations (though obviously Maya is a native language in Mexico, not an immigrant one). Speakers of the nondominant language have to make a concerted effort for their children and grandchildren to maintain the language, especially if they also speak the dominant language. I also had a friend in Mérida (age 30) who grew up in a more remote village where Maya was still the dominant language and few people spoke Spanish. He did not learn Spanish until he left to study in Mérida as a teenager. I wonder whether the "remote" villages of Yucatán continue to maintain the Mayan language to the same degree today.

México is a great country. Oaxaca is one of my favorite states and there where I was born, it is the cultural center of Mexico, many traditions are still preserved, where more indigenous languages are spoken, there are even different spanish accents depending on the area. Many tourists and nationals say that it has the best gastronomy in Mexico, and its geographical location allows you to see different landscapes.

I've been following your other channel, Langfocus, for years and now just discovered this one and love it! Great video. I lived in Mexico City for 4 years. It is hands down my favorite country. Advice for tourists: avoid Cancun, Cabo, and other resort towns. Head to the central cities, and explore the small towns in the mountains, called Pueblo Magicos.

I went to Mexico for the first time last year with my wife, specifically to Toluca in el estado de México.
For any other Americans reading this, get the stereotypes that the US media has given us, mexico is a beautiful country and most areas are relatively safe. It also has some of the best food I've ever had in my life.

I am in the Eastern US and before lived in Arizona. The Mexican food there was much spicier and I loved it better than the mild seasoning they use here ! When tired of this place, Mexico is high on the list of countries I might move to.

Glad to know you are coming back! However, as a Brazilian geologist, I must say that there are different definitions of Central America. Here, in South America, we consider America a whole continent with three sub-parts (North, Central, and South). Also, if you think about it geologically, Central America is on a different tectonic plate (Caribbean plate) from North and South America.

There's a lot to like about Mexico, but probably my favourite thing about Mexico is it's geographical diversity. Wanna visit a beach? How about an arid desert? a tropical rainforest? a temperate pine forest? Wanna walk on a glacier? Wanna do them in the space of a day? It's all possible in Mexico. Mexico is essentially a mini version of the world. I think the Koppen map does Mexico most justice. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Mexico#/media/File:Mexico_K%C3%B6ppen.svg Going from one area to another feels like stepping into another country. Not a lot of countries hold as much geographical variety as Mexico in a relatively compact country.
Absolutely. People in the US often think of desert and cacti when they think of Mexico, because the areas near the border are like that. But that’s just one type of landscape in Mexico.

A couple of little known facts: Mexico has the largest variety of evergreen trees in the world. And it also has the largest variety of lizards. 🦎🌲🇲🇽
So one would have a very real probability of encountering a Christmas Lizard of some sort?

Not to sound pedantic, but it's actually called "Día de muertos" in Spanish, not "Día de los muertos." The latter is a round-trip translation of "Day of the dead". You have to translate "Día de muertos" as "Day of the dead" in English, since "Day of dead" isn't grammatical. No biggie. It still makes sense in Spanish, but it's not what it is called in Mexico. Just thought you might want to know since you're a language buff.

Interesting. I’ve seen it written both ways online in Spanish, and sometimes it’s written with “los” in parentheses, suggesting that it’s optional. After reading your comment I checked again and it seems that in Mexico there’s no “los” but outside of Mexico it’s normally said with “los”.

Very nice video, very good description of our country, I really appreciate it. If only we could have kept some of that huge land we lost to the USA... When it comes to religion, you overlooked the Virgen of Guadalupe, which is a huge figure to most Mexican religious people here. There are sooo many things to love about our beloved Mexico: the food, the traditions, the mystique and hospitality of our people, the beaches, the weather, the tequila, the pyramids, the most beautiful women, particularly from Sinaloa and Veracruz. We are getting started into a new era: the 4T. VIVA MEXICO!

I know you were waiting for the channel to return. :) The order of the videos is always going to have variety, so there normally won't be like 3 European countries in a row, it will be more of a mix. But there will be lots of videos on European countries, and Canada will be video number 11.
Your pronunciation of "Tenochtitlan" is on point! Even [non nahua] Mexicans get it wrong by stressing the "a" instead of the "i".

Us mexicans live in a perpetual state of either "Sáquenme de Méjico por amor de Dios" or "Viva México, cabrones".
Also, I'd like to correct you on adding my state (Zacatecas) to the Bajío (Lowlands) zone. Although culturally we belong to that region, my state is neither low (the capital stands at 2,500 metres) nor humid (semidesert climate) nor wealthy.
Quite in fact, just as many Zacatecans live in the US as in the motherland. This was not always like this, and during the Viceroyalty years and even up to the Mexican Revolution years, it was one of the wealthiest and most important regions. Bad governments left us in the state we're now.

A fun story reflecting my point:
Several years ago, our government was offered the opportunity of hosting a well known foreign company of vehicles. The then current government rejected it because they lost the elections and they'd be out of government in a year, and so they didn't want the credit going to the incoming party.
The businessmen went to the neighbouring state (Aguascalientes) and set shop there. They gave employment to thousands of people, and their good experience motivated many other companies to set shop there, making Aguascalientes one of the most prosperous states of the nation.
The boundaries of the regions vary a little bit depending on the source. I guess the general description doesn't apply to every state, or at least to every area of every state.

All my life I have been listening that Guadalajara or Monterrey are the second largest city... And then Puebla or Veracruz perhaps, but I've never heard of Tijuana being so big....
Tijuana is actually the second largest city, but not the second largest metro area. I somehow mixed that up. Monterrey is the second largest metro area.
About mountains, between Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental, and in the south of Central Mexican Plateau, there is the "Eje Neovolcánico transversal", where are the highest and more recents mountains: Pico de Orizaba, Popocatépetl, Iztaccihuatl, Nevado de Toluca, Paricutín, etc.

I've never seen Geography Now (only the thumbnails), so I don't know. But I bet a lot of people will like both. Just like lots of people watch both Langfocus and Nativlang. Actually, I've never seen Nativlang, either. I don't watch channels on themes similar to mine, because I want my videos to have their own style.
This video is very concise on Mexico based on historical, economical and cultural facts. Regarding the final question: The mythologic aspect of the MExicas and their gods, who were no more than the representation of the nature itself, Day of the Death and the Historical Development of the Country. I hope people around the world visit MExico not only for its beauty but for its ressources, and intellectual, technical and scientific potentials.
The Cholula pyramid could have been the tallest but it was destroyed.

I liked the video a lot, I'm from Mexico and I think it was pretty accurate just one I would have liked you to add is that the actual Mexico's name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos (that would translate to United States of Mexico) but anyways great and very informative video 😉🇲🇽
