This video is a country profile of the nation of Canada, the second largest country in the world (but definitely not the second most populous). It's often known mainly for its location directly to the north of the United States, and its historic connection to it. But despite the superficial similarities in accent and lifestyle, Canadians feel very much separate and distinct from the USA, with different values and a different national ethos.
Canada is a very diverse country with an ethos of multiculturalism. And there is also a distinction between Anglophone Canadians (whom people around the world are more likely to mix up with Americans), and Francophone Canadians, in particular in the largely French-speaking province of Quebec. Then of course there are the First Nations people of Canada, who were there before the arrival of Europeans and later immigrants.
There's also a tremendous amount of diversity in landscape (and to some degree climate) throughout Canada's ten provinces and three territories. For those who care to take a look, Canada is a lot more interesting than its reputation would lead them to believe!

I'm from India, and we often joke about Indian immigration to Canada. Most of the people, especially from the state of Punjab want to move there and there is a huge Indian diaspora in Canada. Even some road signs are in Punjabi which I find really funny. And great video as always, Paul!
Yeah, there is a large Indian diaspora in Canada, especially people from Punjab. Punjabi is the fourth most spoken language in Canada after English, French, and Chinese. Though it might be third if Chinese is divided into Mandarin, Cantonese, etc. I’d have to check that.
You can even watch NHL Hockey games on TV in Punjabi here!

The cold in the north really isn't that bad! My sister moved to Yellowknife several years ago and I visited in January 2020. In many areas of the north, due to the low humidity and relative lack of wind, even very cold temperatures don't feel so awful. Many major areas in the prairies experience similar levels of cold at times, and Atlantic winters are a different beast altogether with harsh storms and winds.
I think the main reason that many Canadians don't want to move up there is because the towns are all small, relatively lacking in services/resources, and have a high cost of food/supplies. Of course these are all problems only solved by having more people move there... A bit of a catch-22.
People discount the effect of humidity on how cold you feel! Even in Vancouver you'd be surprised how much you have to wear in our relatively mild winters.
After experiencing -40° winter temperatures while living in Northern Finland I have to disagree with you there, it feels just awful!
... Obviously humidity plays a part, but I'll take windy and humid -1 C° any day instead of that.
I've been in northern Alberta, and Whitehorse, both in the winter. I live in Ottawa. If sucky cold winters are something you really hate, then I'd wager Whitehorse will be more enjoyable than Ottawa. The capital gets months of -20 to -30 C, but damp, cloudy, and windy in a way that just makes it awful. Sure, northern Alberta gets colder, but it's dry and less cloudy.
Very true. I've been told Siberia is much worse. You know, -50 and lower, and wind chills as well.
I visited Canada in 1975 with my parents when I was a seven year old kid (Ontario only). I have nice memories about it and hopefully I will make another trip to there some day.

I´m from Norway and I´ve always wanted to go to Canada, there´s so much vast nature and beauty from pictures and videos I´ve seen and every Canadian I´ve met in my life so far has been really nice, friendly and sympathetic which made me even more of a fan of Canada. Definitely going there someday when I get the chance! :)

Thank you, this was a very nice watch! I had no idea Canada is trying to populate it's North, nor about the motives to do so. Here in Finland there doesn't seem to be much interest in keeping all parts of the country populated as people are moving more south and to the bigger cities, but this is of course a very small country compared to Canada so the situation isn't really comparable.
Canada and Canadians have a stellar reputation here in Northern Europe! I've never visited unfortunately, but we had many Canadian exchange students back in Uni, and some of my friends studied there. Not much of a culture shock for someone Nordic, I gather. And there's New Finland to make us feel right at home, of course. ;)
It's because, according to international law, if you aren't using your land, it can be taken by anyone that occupies it. We have a huge amount of land up there (though most maps make it look even larger than it is), and protecting it is no easy task. Yet another debt we owe to our indigenous brothers and sisters.

Canada is a gem of a country! l've always found Canada fascinating, so much that l have a book on Canada's history. Canada's Viking heritage is of major interest to me, as l'm of part-Viking descent. Heck, there should be separate videos about each of the 13 provinces and territories!
Lake Superior has almost exactly the same surface area as Austria, btw (82.103 km² and 83.882 km², respectively).

Canada is a very interesting country. Although French is one of the two official languages, along with English, it is hardly heard as in British Columbia or Alberta.
Yes, French isn’t used much in the provjnces far away from Quebec. There are some French speaking communities here and there, though.
Yeah I agree, I've lived in Metro Vancouver for my entire 17 years on this planet (at the time of commenting), and I never heard much French until I went to Victoria on Vancouver Island last summer. I heard a LOT of French being spoken there in public.

I love this video, Canada is wonderful. I have driven from Nova Scotia to BC and Banff, etc. I just love it. I learned the name of a new province. I didn’t remember one of them. I love Canada. Peace park is fun to go to in WA/Canada. I have been there twice and it is very relaxing.

@@GEOfocusChannel Oh my goodness Paul. I guess I have seen more then. I have driven off the ferry at Prince Rupert, round trips, twice. I been to the dinosaur museum twice and the stops on the road, where you can see dinosaur eggs in situ. Very fun! On the Montana border there are the Hoodos with the native paintings. I love Canada!

As an indigenous Canadian, I want everyone in the world to know about residential schools and what they did to us. People in Canada already know about it a lot. But it has not reached outside of the country yet. And I want that information to get out of Canada and into the rest of the world.

My great-great-grandparents were among Mennonite immigrants from Ukraine who were invited to come settle in Canada in the 1800s, making me a fifth-generation Canadian. I'm so thankful to call this lovely country home. ❤️🤍🇨🇦

lol, there's some truth to the stereotype.
When I first started watching your Langfocus channel, I knew right off the hop that you were Canadian. I happen to be Canadian myself, so your accent gives you away. While many think Canadians and Americans sound the same, they don't. If anything, Canadians tend to have more a clipped accent with precise and measured speech - just as you do. I know that when I'm in social situations, I tend to relax and adopt a southwestern Ontario twang (linguists sometimes call this a rural Canadian accent - which applies to all parts of English Canada, save for the Maritimes). But when I'm in a formal or business situation, where I have to enunciate more clearly, my diction tightens up considerably and my speech has a more clipped sound.
Americans generally don't have this ability - to quickly switch from their local dialect to a formal sound.
I grew up in Canada and haven't been back in 30 years. I'd love to see it again as I still have friends there.
I'm in Chinese descent. What I like best about Canada is the multiculturalism.

Thanks, Paul, from a Canadian-born living in (Western) Australia. I decided to keep the numbers fixed and just change their sign, from -40C to +40C. Aussies are aghast when I tell them that the best temperature is therefore the one furthest from the extremes = 0 degrees C (or 32F in the ancient, primitive scale). Chuckle: Aussies feel that anything below +20C is “bloody freezing, mate”. As for bloody +40C it’s “beauuuuuutiful”. I do miss real winters!…

Yes, but mainly when I was too little to remember now. But I went to Victoria for a couple days when I was in college. It was a nice little city with a bit of British flavor.
My step father worked in Toronto in the 70s while the CN tower was being built. He was front page news when he messed up and blew all the electrics out of the building site. He returned to England with his tail between his legs and a loaded hand gun in his luggage that I took to show my schoolmates. It was a different world.

I’ve always loved Canada. I am fascinated by its wonderful landscapes and the fact that it is bilingual English-French. I’ve always seen it as a modern and open-minded country. When I tried to move there I didn’t succeed unfortunately, but I definitely want to visit the country some day, hopefully more than once 🤞🇨🇦🍁

My state also loves ice hockey and we even have some places that serve poutine (sorry, don't get the appeal of it personally). We share a vast watery landscape in Voyageurs National Park and Quetico Provincial Park. The Great Lakes are astounding. Love Canada!
The poutine served in the states would not pass for poutine in Canada. The best ones are in Quebec cottage country!
Poutine used to be just a Quebec thing; at least from the perspective of a Torontonian. We only knew about it from our awesome road trips to Ottawa/Gatineau (Hull back then) and Montreal. It’s only in the last 20 years or so that we’re all pretending it was always a typical Canadian phenomenon.

Oh, there was some issue with the licensing. I bought the image from a stock image service, but then it was withdrawn and they told me I had to retract all uses of it.
On CZcams I can’t just delete and re-upload videos without losing all the views, comments, and performance history, so I just blurred the image instead.

I learned about the big BIG water reserves, I have watched the country on a map a lot of times but I never thought about that, its kinda like the amazon in terms of vegetation and trees I guess. I would love to take the canadian train to visit the country from east to west, in size Canada is an universe inself, but not in winter, I am too weak to face the canadian winter 🤧😅

@@GEOfocusChannel oh how I love Ed Grimley I must say! SCTV came on NBC after Saturday Night Live in the 80s and you had to be devoted because that was from 1-2 am Sunday. And many of us were. My high school years I don't think Martin Short was yet on but he eventually ended up on SNL doing Ed Grimley there. I watched SCTV when it was John Candy, Moranis, Dave Thomas. Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Andrea Martin. SCTV is on the air (TV's flying out the windows lmao!)

Yeah, I get it when people say it like “New Found Land”, but I’ve heard it the naturally pronounced way since I was a kid. I remember they taught us the etymology of the name at school when I was about 7 years old, and I remember being surprised that the place name could actually be broken down into separate words. To me it was just Newfinland. 😊
For better or worse I learned the term Newfie from South Park, though I promise to not trust their depiction of them as accurate.
Really good focus on how Canada is formed. Before Ottawa was chosen as the capital, Canada's capital moved between Toronto and Montreal for few decade as they couldn't please English and French Canadian.
Before Ottawa was chosen, the capitals were Kingston, Québec City, Toronto and Montreal (not in that order necessarily)...between 1840 and 1867.
Ottawa was chosen as the capital of the Colony of Canada in 1857 not only because of its location on the border between present-day Ontario and present-day Quebec (the two main portions of that colony), but more importantly because it's a) well away from somewhere like Kingston that's really close to the US border and b) midway between the capitals of those two sub-units (Quebec City and Toronto).

As an Australian 🇦🇺 who lived in Canada for 10 months (and before you make the assumption, no, I did not live in Whistler doing a working-holiday at Banff ski resort, I went to school there…) I can honestly say that Canada is an absolutely beautiful, amazing and very safe country with very friendly and genuine people (for the most part) and I would absolutely love to visit it again, because I only really stayed in one place, I didn’t have the opportunity to travel a lot. However my point is that despite still not being able to tell Canadian accents apart from American ones (depending on where in Canada the person is from and I know a lot of you can, but I’m sorry, I still cannot, despite having lived there for almost a year 😢) I will NEVER, EVER view Canada as just “the country that lives in America’s shadow” or the “boring version of America” as Paul stated. No… They are chalk and cheese. While America has all these f*cked up problems, pardon my French, down south of the border which for the most part they do not and a lot of the time sadly even cannot address, Canada is very peaceful and liveable. I’m not saying that Canada doesn’t have any issues, of course no country is perfect, but to say that Canada is like “America’s 51st state” is just like saying a car and a wagon are the same thing

Yes, I know. But there is an Anglicized pronunciation. When narrating in English I always have the dilemma of whether to use etymological pronunciations (and endonyms), or Anglicized pronunciations.
In the Rio de la Plata area (e.g. Argentina), it's pronounced more like cord-ee-SHAIR-uh.
Canada is in fact pretty much Canada-lite for most of it. Québec has a richer history and its own culture, as do the Acadians. The rest is just the US with universal healthcare lol.

The stock image provider told me they had a legal issue with the image (after I had already used it) and that I needed to remove it.
It could be that a "photographer" was selling an image they didn't own the rights to, and the real rights holder complained. I'm not sure.
Great video Paul. However the 1995 Québec referendum wasn't on independence: it was "Do you agree that Quebec should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Canada for a new economic and political partnership" bla bla bla. Many interpreted the "new economic and political partnership" as the focus, and that sovereignty was a precursor to independence. Otherwise the vote might not have been as close.
I interpret “sovereign” as “independent”, but yes, it seemed like they loaded the question to misdirect people’s attention away from that.

Do you still live in Canada, Paul? If so, what province? Country so big I still haven't managed to visit every province. Haven't yet made it to Quebec, NF&L, or NS. Or the territories.
I'm in Saskatchewan, for my sins, and a not-so fun fact about here is because we're so far from any large body of water, we have one of the biggest seasonal temperature swings anywhere in the world. Everybody knows how cold it gets, and yeah, for about 5 months of the year it's frigid and miserable. But for about 3 months in summer it's SWELTERING and miserable!
Another unfun fact: We've got probably the most overvalued housing market in the world, too, and if you want to ever buy a house in one of the small parts of the country with a nice climate, good luck; enjoy paying a million bucks for a crap-shack!

I can't say where I currently live because of some privacy issues (there are some scary yahoos online), but I'm originally from the Vancouver area.
You're right about home prices in Vancouver. A million dollars buys you a small 100 year old detached home in Vancouver city. In the suburbs maybe you can buy a townhouse for that much. Lots of houses just sit there empty as a way for foreign buyers to park money, meanwhile most young people can't afford to buy a home unless their parents help them. That's the one bad thing I have to say about Vancouver.

I can’t make customized content for each individual. The music increases watch time, which means on average people enjoy videos more when there’s music.
I have traveled to Canada several times from the USA and found it to be a beautiful interesting country. I don't recommend visiting right now because Canada is currently being run by a cruel and repressive government that will extend its repressive rules and arbitrary enforcement to visitors as well as to its own citizens.
