As a french person, I'd like to thank you for this really interesting video and for the effort put on saying all the french word in French. French are usually rude to people who make mistakes, yet your effort is really appreciable.

France is like a micro-continent ; a huge diversity on a limited surface. You can travel a few miles and change everything: landscape, architecture, climate, food and even language ❤

As a French, I would encourage visitors to not stop at Paris! Many foreigners only think of Paris when they think of France, but it is not the only place worth visiting, and dare I say not even the best one!

For us Italians, it's the land of our cousins, with which we constantly quarrel like any big family. I also love French but I am never telling them: I'd rather complain about their incomprehensible everyday speech that makes even ordering a baguette in a boulangerie a problem.
Before watching the video, I didn't know the extent of their overseas territories. I knew they existed, but I thought they were much more limited.

I am French and I have several answers why France is the most visited country on Earth.
1. The historic monuments (history is litteraly everywhere in France. You can visit castles, old city centers, important places like Normandy's landing...)
2. The ski tourism
3. The beach tourism (a lot of northern europeans come in France to benefit of the sun, especially in the Mediterranean bay)
4. The cultural events (we have a lot of associations and museum which organize festivals often globally popular like Cannes festival. Personnaly, I am a fan of La Machine, an association based in Nantes which make big robots well animated. 😉 )
5. The nature (we have many natural parks with their own biodiversity. It's a good trick for hiking).
6. The health tourism (we have too balnear sources and other places where people can cure themselves)
7. The diplomatic and business power of France (international organizations and entreprise needs to travel abroad most of time. As we have several headquarters (UNESCO, Interpol, FIFA...), they're attracting many peoples)
8. The gastronomy (Need I to explain? 😁)
9. The transports, especially trains.
When you arrive in an airport in France, it's easy to move to another place thanks to the train and to the bus. If needed, it's possible to do carpooling with applications like Blablacar.
So, when you arrive in France, you can easily visit the rest of the country.
10. Basically, the geographic position. We are at the intersection of West Europe, so logically, we are crossed by many travellers who want to travel abroad, even if their final destination is not France.
Thank you for your work. It's very detailled and it's always a pleasure to see its country from an outside point of view. ^^

L'Espagne et l'Italie gonflent énormément nos chiffres par les touristes anglais, belges et allemands qui passent en bagnole chez nous. Ils sont comptés dans les stats. C'est de la triche mais les pouvoirs publics peuvent plus vraiment faire marche arrière puisque sans ça on serait plus premiers, c'est pas bon pour les bulletins ^^

I moved to France (from the UK) 9 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I live near Paris but France has so much...I'm a big fan of their surfing region down near Biarritz, but there's a lot more around the country. The Christmas Markets, the hiking trails....did you know that France is one of the few European countries that has a desert? It's a delight to be in a culture that prizes manners, respect and sincerity. Of course when you live in a country rather than just visit you become more aware of the social and political problems that a country has - and France has plenty. But so does every country, in their own way.

@@HankyPanky841 La Dune du Pilat in the Arcachon bay area. It's basically a giant sand dune but is technically a desert. Very impressive and worth a visit.
Thank you for your nice comment, it's a wholesome comment to read as a french person. I travel to UK two times in my life, I did London, Bath, Bristol, Brighton, and the mine Big Pit, UK is also a very beautiful country that I really like to see with my family and my friends.
For having studied in detail France's geography, it's like a videogame. You go from one "biome" to another and each of them have unique landscape and rich and unique culture. And there's around 50 different ones.

As a non-parisian French person, thank you for talking about the metropolitan parts of France too. It kind of surprises me that this is the most visited country in the world knowing that tourists usually only come to visit Paris (I can't blame them, I also usually mostly do capital cities when I travel abroad). But Paris is still quite a small city. Also, if you plan on visiting France, you can take into account that French sceneries are very diversed and that other regions would love to welcome you too

As a south korean who was born and raised in france and naturalised french, i am so proud of both countries but i am more proud of france for its culture and diversity and its diplomatic power. Vive la république.

I am from the Northern part of France and I have to say that Southern France doesn't quite feel like home for me, since absolutely nothing here feels even remotedly Mediterrean. I feel more closer to Belgians than to Southern France. But part of my family is Belgian, that may be why. :D
France is also partly african culturaly today : you may look at people clothes outside during a saturday afternoon etc... There is the influence of food and music as well...

Well, we are quite far from the northern European efficiency... despite the fact that the northern half of France being located at the latitudes of Austria or southern Germany, we still are culturally lot closer to, say, Italy, than to the germanic countries
Paul's accent is close to perfection? Hardly so. I know he's a linguist and he studied french, but like most english native speakers his vowels sound odd, and he still struggles with our /r/ sound which is perfectly understandable don't get me wrong.

As a Moroccan national who studied and lived in France for many years and also visited many European countries, I can safely say that France is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe if not the most beautiful.
France is the most diverse European country. Diversity in landscapes, cuisines, cultures, populations and climate. When it comes to Europe, many countries are beautiful and worth visiting but if someone has no choice but to visit one and only one European country then France is the way to go.
As a French people, we are always taught in school that there is five important rivers, even if the last one is not 100% French, there is « Le Rhin »

I live in one the French overseas regions mentionned in the video, Martinique.
And as such, I thought that I could, perhaps, add a few things that could be interesting.
- Geographically, the island of Martinique is relatively small.(1 128 km² and around 64 km long.)
However, it is very lush and filled with many beaches as well.
In terms of fauna, it is notable for a remarkable concentration of hummingbirds (Colibri in French), which are often used as a symbol of the Island.
As for it's proximity to other countries, from Martinique, the island-country of St.Lucia can be seen and, on really sunny days, you can even see the island-country of Dominica (not the same as the Dominican republic, btw 🇩🇲/🇩🇴), just behind St-Lucia.(🇱🇨)
It should be noted that, despite being French, the Island isn't included in the E.U's Schengen area, which allows European citizens to travel freely, without passport or other border checks between the E.U's internal borders.
That's also the case for all of France's oversea territories as well.
- Culturally, the majority of the island's population is comprised of descendants of black slaves. In fact, one the bigger cities here, Schoelcher, is named after Victor Schoelcher, who is often recognized as the man responsible for the abolishment of slavery in France in 1848.(For good this time, since it has been abolished earlier in 1794 but Napoleon I reinstated it in 1802.)
So slavery is a touchy subject here, especially given that the descendants of white colonists (Béké as they're called here.) from way back then, are still, today among the island's richest citizens.
- Economically, it is one of France's poorest territories (when compared to other French territories, it's still above the economic standards of it's area.).
As of 2020, it was among the three poorest ones in fact along with Réunion and Corsica.
Though, it is still the second richest island of the "lesser Antilles", with a GDP of around 9 billion USD.
One it's main products is Rum which is mainly exported towards, mainly metropolitan France and from there, the rest of Europe and, to a lesser extent, North America.
- If you ever visit, I would recommend the Garden of Balata, on the heights of Fort-De-France, Martinique's capital city.
It's a great place to see the variety of the island's flora.
But there's also other places of interest like : The town of St-Pierre which was devastated by a volcanic eruption In 1902, one of the most devastating of the 20th century, claiming the lives of 30 000 people and left only 2 survivors, one of whom was in his prison cell at the time ; The town of Le Diamant (The Diamond), which has a giant rock in the shape of, you guessed it, a diamond 💎, and that rock was also a vessel of the British Navy at some point, seriously, they even named it "H.M.S Diamond Rock." and put cannons on top of it.
And that's about it.
I just wanted to add some information about one the French oversea territories, since they're often really forgotten about in discussions regarding France.(Even in Metropolitan France itself.)
But the value of these territories shouldn't be underestimated, not only from an economic standpoint (Granted, still not as comparable as Metropolitan France but often, still above the surrounding foreign territories) but more importantly, from a strategic standpoint given that they're the reason why France has the largest ZEE in the World.

C'est drôle, parce qu'on m'a toujours dit que c'était parce que l'impératrice Joséphine, venant d'une famille de colons Békés, qui aurait eu donc un intérêt à rétablir l'esclavage, le lui aurait suggéré.
Et, bien qu'on ne puisse pas vraiment savoir ce que Mme de Beauharnais en pensait vraiment.(même si, en faisant quelques recherches de plus,(Wikipédia, mais ça marche quand même.) il semblerait qu'elle ait pu être assez sympathique à des courants abolitionnistes vis à vis de l'esclavage.)
Il est quand même bien plus logique que, Napoléon l'ait fait pour calmer les Anglais.
Donc, merci de m'avoir apporté certainement, l'explication la plus logique à ce sujet, que je n'avais malgré tout, jamais entendu avant 😅.
En y pensant, c'est vraiment regrettable qu'ils aient détruits la statue de l'impératrice, à Fort de France.

Et je pense que c'est aussi vrai pour notre chère Impératrice.

I think France is a popular destination for the country image in general, but also because as you mentioned in your video it is in the center of Western Europe: many visitors would probably visit several countries during their trip, and France would most often be one of them.
And also because "France" rhymes with "vacances" :))
Let's not forget to mention local languages such as "Créole" spoken in most the overseas Régions . Each of the Région has its own Créole.

I'm not french, but I feel french a lot because I grew up near Paris and never stopped visiting that country.
Paris is so far the most incredible city I had the chance to visit, but as some other comments said, there's much more than Paris in France.
Although some English speaking countries love to hate France, it's a fact that in some areas nothing can beat the prestige of France.
Even to us French people, we sometimes love to hate our own country. This is how we are, and why foreign people LOVE our country but HATE its people: we aren't ever satisfied with what we have, how we have it, and so on. We forever find a way to complain. This isn't a problem when we are in France. But it is a problem when we are traveling worldwide and show the rest of the world how we are.
We love perfection and if we may reach it for our land, we can't "for us".

France is the most visited country because it's one of the most diverse countries in the world - culturally and geographically speaking - : we have incredible nature (valleys, forests, mountain, coastline...) but also incredible architectural sites. We also have great food I think. But what has made it the most visited country every year for decades is its connectivity with the rest of the world, international airports and massive touristic infrastructures ! We have all it takes to welcome 89 million travelers every year, enough hotels and transport for such a massive amount of people. And we're not arrogant at all despite what many people think 😂 - but most Parisians are arrogant indeed, even we say it.

Vous oubliez aussi le fait que Paris est surpeuplé avec des axes routiers bouchés en permanence, un flux continue de touristes et d'immigrés et une gestion catastrophique de la ville.... sans parler du prix de l'immobilier et de la concurrence dans certains secteurs... bref bien loin du calme de la province et des villes moins "speed"

As a French woman, I advise you to stop going to Paris and instead visit the provincial cities and the overseas departments, you will learn more.
Bonne vidéo Paul! I have French ancestry that I've traced back to 1500s Normandy. In the early 1600s, my 8x-great grandfather, who was a carpenter, volunteered to go to New France (now Quebec, Canada) to build settlements. He married my 8x-great grandmother, who was one of the "Filles du Roi," or daughters of the king, who also volunteered to be sent to Quebec so they could start families and grow their settlements. There are of course numerous descendants of these settlers in Quebec but many of them also settled in Maine, upper New England, and the Great Lakes states in the US.
Most French-Canadians are descended from about 5,000 couples who came over in the 1600s and early 1700s. They didn't all come over as couples, the migrants where overwhelmingly male but came to make a quick profit in the fur trade, and most returned to France, but a few women also came and married the minority of French men who decided to settle in New France after having made some money in the fur trade. Today there are around 10 million people in North America with French-Canadian ancestry.

2:08 the massif armoricain is very interesting as it’s technically one of the oldest mountain range we know of on earth. Some rocks were formed hundred of millions of years ago, and it’s so old the erosion ate all of the mountains leaving only the rugged hills and cliffs we know of today.

I think one of the reasons why tourism is such a big part of the French economy is due to the Tour de France, the way it is filmed shows just enough of the country to appeal to the curiosity of the viewers. Such great marketing 😂

I'm French and i think we're the most visited country becasue you can do pretty much anything you want in France. Want to go to the beach ? You can. To the moutain ? Done. The city ? Easy. Just a nice walk in the forrest ? Any time. A museum or very old historical place ? Pick an era. And bonus point, whatever you do, wherever you go, you will find good food and good wine.

I think France has the most tourists since it has something for everyone: skiing, beach holidays, architecture, viniculture, history, natural beauty, spirits, best bread and viennoiseries.
The Brits enjoy the weather, food and wine. The Dutch like the rolling hills of the SW (we see many, many Dutch here in Lot et Garonne & Gers). The yanks like the history and architecture. For the Japanese it's culturally exotic/ romantic, but Paris is such a contrast between expectation and reality that can result in "Paris syndrome." It's honestly pretty disappointing and not in my top 10 cities, even in France.

De plus c'est une ville trop chère.

Excellent video as usual, Paul! Congratulations. I am French, and I think the reason why France is so popular with tourists is due to the former prestige of France that was once political, artistic and literary. While architecture and some of the other arts still remain an attraction, France as a nation has seen better days. Your French pronunciation was superb and even I learnt a few numbers with the detailed information you provided, for instance 80% people living in cities. Thanks also for including a beautiful picture of my hometown, Rouen!

- there is another main river that should be drawn: the Rhin, at the border with Germany. It has a tremendous historical legacy and is a major piece of the energy infrastructure with "run-of-the-river" dams.
- a likely explanation of the tourism attractivity is due to the central position of France: many people come to France and then go elsewhere (after visiting or not), or must travel through France to reach Iberian peninsula from all other countries of Europe and symmetrically.

France has the most tremendous variety of landscapes in a quiet small aerea. This peculiarity has given the opportunity of many different human groups to grow their own cultures but history made the rest and even if there are areas still using their original language, since maybe 2 to 3 centuries, everybody speaks the same french. Where ever a french comes from and go he is still in France and even if habits ans uses are not locally the same as is original ones he depends on the same laws anywere on the territory.
Paris is the big cheese but the "provinces" are diamonds to discover.

Edit: i would say that France is the most visited country in the world by virtue of its image by the world as the "elegant country" and other things like that.

Great video and more importantly you have an amazing French accent!!! Here in Alsace the culture is pretty close to the German culture but it is still a unique culture different from your typical French mentality. We have a lot of tourists due to the food and wine produced here. The "route des vins d'Alsace" is a beautiful way to discover the region with medieval castles, museums and a some particularities like the small Town/village of "new" Breisach built by Vauban an urban architect for King Louis XIV which faces the little town of "Old" Breisach on the German side of the Rhine River. There's a lot to say about the beautiful region of Alsace and about France in general so come and visit us to learn more about it!!!

Just a quick correction, Occitanie is an administrative region since 2016 but it's also and most importantly a cultural area that is far bigger than the administrative region ( which is historically called Languedoc). Occitanie encompasses all the south of France from Gascony to Provence ( except of course northern catalonia and the basque country).

He still forgot about the northern dialect (chtimi) and the eastern dialect (alsacien).
@@0m3ga50 he did not forget chti language. He mentioned the other romance languages as a whole group which the Ch’timi is part of (as well norman - which is somewhat close to the Chti- , wallon etc.).
For the alsacien language I do not know it so can’t say.
Breton language is specifically mentioned separately because it is not a romance language but a Celtic one, as well as Basque is a separate pre-indo european language.
These romance languages are close enough all together to make them theorically inter-changeable, well that’s just theory the reality is different, my norman dialect (it has itself lots of local variants) and parisien french shared a lot centuries ago so that it could be partially understandable for a french speaking person, though lots of words do not exist in french, grammar / « conjugaison » / accent & pronounciation create deep gaps with modern french.

@@mimosal3767 Not necessarily, the fact is that even in other regions other local dialects remained mainstream in terms of daily spoken language within the population until the modern republican era. At least there was the legal and administrative language which was the french and was the one used and written on offical documents, but the real vernacular language was generally a local dialect.
Before the beginning of the XXth century everyone in France was speaking its local dialect, until the french authorities decided to harass the locals and force them to adopt the mainstream parisian dialect. My grand-grand parents were barely speaking french, on the contrary they spoke norman dialect daily. My grand parents understood both but it was forbidden in school to speak it. Same (and even worse in terms of aggressive cultural pressure from the french authorities) in Bretagne against the breton language (whilst french vs norman or french vs picard are somewhat inter-understandable, with some substantial effort 😁, it is not the case between breton and french, or between basque and french).
The flatenning of cultural differences in term of spoken language in France is quite recent to my opinion.
BTW bretagne region was gaulic a while before the bretons came from england during saxon's invasions. At the time anyway being french has absolutely no meaning (former France did not exist yet)
France has a diversity of activities, and, it has an huge historical culture. It's too a great country to visit with his fabulous landscapes.

I'm french and to answer your question there is already other people on comments that told all the importants points so I will not repeat them. But france is a beautiful and unique country with a lot of totally différents landscapes, monuments etc etc . Btw great video. I learned the unesco part that I didn't know before.

The greatest prestige of France is its history, it is simply incredible, more battles won (in front of the USA), an angel of the Lord intervened in its geopolitics (Saint Joan of Arc defeated the English who had invaded almost the entire country, she was only 17 years old)...
As a French I didn’t know we were the most visited country in the world, especially as I’m not from Paris, we have a huge tendency to live among ourselves, friends, family and that’s it.
The last winter I organised a huge party at a ski resort for a birthday celebration. we were drunk as fuck, trying jump off the road with our cars and at the end a lot of strangers joined us to party ! Danish, Austrian mainly, they said they had the best time in their life because they would have ended up arrested by the police.
My point is we have a huge freedom here that is not cliché like in the USA but still impressive, I think we forget it so easily.

Let me tell you that, as a french dude from Toulouse, your explanations are really the good ones to resume clearly the french geography, history helped us a lot to have this nice country (not everytime using the good way but it is the case [colonisation, imperialism, etc...]). Edit: about why France is the most visited, I think it is because of the diversity of nice places to be & see, sometimes for the people you can meet (not always, like everywhere ^^), and more generaly because France is attractive for its history, the country of the human rights declaration, revolution against royalist power, the french devise that outcome, etc... and as you said, some kind of panoramas you can find are just amazing, even me I'm amazed by places I discover... Mediteranean sea zone, Atlantique ocean coast, center, east/north east, North & Britain are just completely different. If I was a foreigner, I really would like to come here to be honest ;) We protet half of the year (sometime much ^^) but we are not that bad comparing with the rest ofthe world.

Merci pour cette vidéo. I’m french and I know how lucky I was to born in such a country. Previous comments widely explained why France remains one of the more attractive country to visit. I lived for 30 years in Paris then left to the Alps and finally came to the Atlantic Ocean in Loire Atlantic. I don’t really understand the french peoples they don’t like France. Maybe it’s simply because they don’t know it and its diversity of landscapes and choices of living. Or maybe some of them like wilde wide areas we don’t really have but in French Guyane and Réunion. France is rich of a multilingual and multi origin Culture and even today, diversity is part of France IMHO.
I didn’t learn anything new but it’s a good recall for me. Thanks again!
I am a french from one of the overseas collectivities, more specifically the one in North America.
It's surface is only about 244m square and in clear days we can see our Canadian neighbors house a few dozen km away xD
Also we are the only Boreal forest of France, our weather and biodiversity is quite unique to France.

I'll add that, as many comments suggest, it's actually so funny how people like to joke on us, because we're known to be proud and somewhat susceptible (which is mainly true, not gonna lie ^^), but there's a famous saying in French: "qui aime bien, châtie bien", which could be roughly translated as "you love as much as you tease". I've travelled a lot around the world, and I can confirm I've almost always encountered friends from every nationalities toward french in general ❤️

Occitan to me sounds like a Spanish or Portuguese person who has taken three weeks of French class trying to speak French.
This is judging off Eleanor of Aquitane's speech in Civ Vi... which is probably actually a medieval dialect!
Yeah even if in the middle ages France was already mostly divided between the Oil language (northern half) and the Occitan language (southern half), both were actually respectively a bunch of dialects depending on the region. The Oil dialects for example (ancestor to modern french) contained norman or parisian french. It's possible for a modern french speaker to roughly understand a medieval "Oil" dialect, but medieval Occitan would be very hard !
I've heard that Occitan was very closely related to the Catalan language.

@@lucianboar3489 Everyone in France technically speak an Oil language. The Oil dialects (it's a continuum, so I wouldn't say those were different languages) are the ancestors of modern French, even if modern French borrowed more from the Parisian Oil variety then from the other parts.
So if you consider Ch'ti to be an Oil dialect, modern French is too.

I'm french and I learned that the biggest wine producing region is Languedoc Roussillon!
I think it's the most visited because:
- Paris (best city in the world with the most interesting history, museums most beautiful landmarks, good restaurants and easy access)
- a great diversity of touristic regions for different kinds of tourists such as
> The Alps where the British come to ski and eat mountain cheese
> The Riviera and Corsica for a Mediterranean luxurious lifestyle (for rich people in the summer)
> Many landmarks all across the country, la Loire's castles, Mont St Michel, Avignon.. old monasteries and cathedrals... a big variety of natural sites, rivers, canals, mountains...
> Great food all across the country
> French image as a romantic and sophisticated country (thanks in part to many french brands), especially in Asia (China and Japan) and the US
As a former parisian, I would say that Paris is a nice city to visit, but among the worse to live in.

Interesting to note that there isn't any word in the english language for a proper translation of "fleuves" (Which are the main "rivers" in France), as a river is just "une rivière". Nobody living by a fleuve in France would call it a "rivière".
It's not just the french main river. Nile or Ganges would also be called "fleuve". It's that french language use different words to call 2 thing that english call the same.
"Fleuve" take its source from a mountain
"Rivière" is a ramification of a "fleuve"
In english they are both called river.

My take on the success of french tourism is this : we have the perfect array of assets, we have everything. We have beaches, mountains, historical monuments, prehistorical sites, wine, food, cultural life both modern and traditional. And all of this is conveniently accessible to the citizens of the biggest and richest economic zone of the world. It's a really fortunate situation.

I believe my country is the most visited for Paris reputation but also due to the fact that many of the country close to us are wealthy and even though they are beautiful (Netherlands Germany Belgium uk ) would prefer to go to France and are able to as the climate is better mainly but also as the food is good, the beaches are nice the south is beautiful and they can come with their car or camping car easily

Paris is such a great town. I was there 5 days in 2019 and all I did was walk the streets. I walked about 10 miles every day! Every street block had something worth seeing.
Paris has like many different town in one town, according to where you are. It was separated villages before... Some "in Paris" part where before "out of Paris"

As a French person and a Norman, I would like to say that our Mont-Saint-Michel is one of the most visited sites in France, countless Japanese people visit it, among other nationalities, and if you go there in August you will hardly hear a full French sentence there!
I have read a lot of comments here that explain why France is so popular with tourists. All countries have interesting monuments, history, food; we may have a little bit more? We also have varied landscapes and a rather good road system. Finally, we ARE in the middle of Europe 🙂

U have forgotten in Galo-Romance languages, there is another one who's called: "l'Arpitan" or "le Francoprovençal" it is (rarely) spoken in the regions near the (common) border betwen Italy Switzerland and France (like Savoie, the South of Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, the East and the South of the Switzerland and the North Italy (Aosta Valley)).

Nice Video ! As a French living in the South Est of France i think the main tourist attractions are obviously Paris, for the effeil tower, l'Arc de Thriomhpe etc.. But in the SE is most likely the beach, and sometimes the Pays Catalan, is a part of France where the Ispanic cultule as we know of Espagna : Corrida, Bodega(
an event often in summer where it basically consists of drinking until you are in a daze) and Les Arene de Nimes( not realy in the catalan region) are realy nice to visit, maybe not in summer like this one but late september is good, nice weather not to hot but not to cold either

Interesting video but you forger some incredible places. Le Bassin d'Arcachon is a legendary one in Nouvelle Aquitaine, Les Landes are so beautifull with all the surf beach and in Occitanie is perfect for all her beach also and her palms everywere :).

Interresting of this country is also, how this language was created. Firstly celtic Gauls, nextly Romans (due to this It is Romance language) and lastly, german Franks (for this word France comes).
Also, in Latin and in Anciend, aswell as in modern Greek exists word Galia, which means France. It is same in name of language.

Thank you, just on point is that french is not made firstly from Gaulish. Gaul was populated by some celtic speaking peoples, who spoke totally different languages from french. These languages have been totally extincted. Also there had been other non celtic peoples, ligurians, greeks on the mediterranean shores, vasconic peoples in the south west... and before the celts invaded, the whole of « gaul » was speaking non celtic languages which we have unfortunally no traces now. The Basque language is the only remaining of the languages that existed before the conquest of much of the lands by the celts from central Europe.

The Latin word Gallia means Gaul, not France. Fun fact: the Latin word gallia also means cock (rooster for the Americans). That’s why this animal is the emblem of France.
