    Oh, I didn't know that South Korea is making a new planned capital city. It seems like a lot of countries have planned to do that in recent times like Egypt and Indonesia.

    • @GEOfocusChannel
      @GEOfocusChannel  Před 2 lety +27

      Yes, you're right. It makes me a little sad, because those planned capital cities are always artificial and lack any kind of authentic atmosphere. But I understand they do it for practical reasons.

      The relocation of capital hasn't been decided yet.
      The constitution of South Korea states that Seoul be the capital of Korea. So unless they modify the current constitution, which requires several steps such as being passed in the congress and holding a referendum, they can't move the capital as it will be violating the constitution. What they are doing right now is just moving some of governement departments to Sejong in order to sort out the over population in Seoul.

    Thank you for covering my country. First of all, I want to confess I'm a big fan of your LangFocus Channel.
    Your explanation was mostly correct, but one thing I would like to flag is the status of Sejong City. Originally, it was supposed to be a new (administrative) capital, but after a long political controversy, Constitutional Court ruled that Seoul is the capital city based on "Conventional Constitution" - this term or concept was coined only for this ruling. We had never heard of it before.
    According to this ruling, the Blue House (Korean White House) along with a handful of ministries and National Assembly must stay in Seoul. However, Sejong has most of ministries, lots of governmental agencies, policy research institutes, etc. and enjoys a special status of Multifunctional Administrative City.

    • @GEOfocusChannel
      @GEOfocusChannel  Před 2 lety

      When was this ruling? Every article I see says that there is opposition, but plans are still moving forward to transfer the capital to Sejong.

I knew they have a big island, but I didn't know it had plenty of natural wonders. Hi Paul,
    Thanks for this nice video again, you always make me more enthusiastic about the countries you make the video about. :) Honestly, I don't really mind that Langfocus is a bit neglected recently as I like languages however I'm even more interested in geography.
    Also, can I have a question for you? It would be more appropriate for Langfocus channel but since you uploaded this video today it's much more probable you will see my comment if I ask my question here. 🙃
    So what's the level from you can be counted as a bilingual? My mother tongue is Hungarian and I learnt English in school for many years and now I'm on a gap year and working in England as a volunteer to improve my language knowledge. Now, I can be somewhere between B2 and C1 level. With this knowledge, can I refer to myself as a bilingual or you can only get the "titles" bilingual, trilingual, quadrilingual if you speak all of these languages on a native level?

    • @GEOfocusChannel
      @GEOfocusChannel  Před 2 lety +1

      Different people use those words in different ways, so I think you can decide how to use them. I don't really use them to refer to myself at all. I talk about "using" languages or doing things with languages rather than claiming a certain level, except when referring to my native language (English). I use Japanese to talk to my wife and in-laws (though I don't understand 100% of my in-laws' dialectal speech). I watch the news and listen to podcasts in Hebrew and Indonesian (though I don't understand 100%), etc. Claiming any titles that tempt the ego is a trap, in my opinion.
      Anyway, in general I don't really want to focus on language on this channel, unless it's related to the language(s) discussed in the video.

    • @ricdavid

      @ignisbendrix Před 2 lety

      @@GEOfocusChannel I see, thank you for your answer. I didn't ask it because I would like to praise myself to others but because it would feel good for me as it proves I've reached something - just as someone gets a degree due to their efforts and hard work. But I get your point and you're right that it's generally harmful to claim a title and, in the safety of this title, don't take the thing seriously enough.
      And sorry for asking this question here, I just don't know when you will upload a new Langfocus video, where it's more appropriate to ask it, or how often you have a look at the comment section of your old videos.

    South Korea, instead of looking down on enemy countries, looked up to them and saw them as their role models. They accepted the fact that they had a lot to learn from those other countries. This is one of the main reasons how South Korea rose from the ashes and became one of the Four Asian Tigers.

  • @gilbertfranklin1537

    Another good one, GEOfocus... the one thing I learned is that they are planning to build a new capital and move the government there. I have seen several other countries which are doing that, or have already done it - such as Australia. Usually they refer to the new area as being neutral, or more centrally located. Sometimes it is just to get out of overcrowded large cities. Oddly enough, I think the USA should consider that, because DC is such a mess. 🙄

      Well, I listened to several native speakers say it and did my best to imitate their pronunciation.

      Your method of Korean romanization and pronunciation are fine and probably as good as one can expect from most non-native speakers. The person above maybe is getting at the newer revised romanization system versus the older McCune-Reischauer system, but both are widely used still. There is little need for nitpicking, really... I mean, the person above is also technically wrong - should be Jaebeol and even his/her account name is romanized "incorrectly."

      @@aminaali6594MURICA BAD. COLONIALISM IS WHY EVERYTHING SUCKS! Is that what you want me to say?
      First, Korea has never been colonized by anyone but Japan for 36 years. Short-term occupation is not the same thing as colonization.
      Second, McCune-Reischauer system was published in 1939, well before the US occupied Korea. Romanization clearly existed in Korea before this, too, as there are English textbooks going back to 1800s.
      Nowadays in general, I find too many people gaslight themselves to be victims, and devalue the actual victims. Just saying.

    I think Asia has a Lingua Franca issue ... Japan should Use the Korean script , and Keep the Kangis , Kangis are just cool lol, but the Korean Script is really cool and might be a better option than learning 3 ways to write one language... I didn't suggest switching to latin because , well English is in Latin , and why not make the Asian Lingua Franca the most challenging , Arabic is for arabs , but Turkish is in latin lol. Vietnamese is too tonal , and so is Korean. lol saving face , that's kinda built into tonal languages , but I call it respect , and anyone who don't understand that's what it is, really shouldn't be in any position of authority

      Using a phonetic script similar to Hangul for Japanese is an idea that comes up a lot among non-Japanese people, but almost never amongst Japanese people. Kanji is a big part of how Japanese people conceptualize and process their language, and without kanji people would likely lose a lot of their vocabulary. I understand that this is a problem in Korean, and in order to have rich knowledge of their language, they have to learn Chinese characters anyway, even though they're not required or used in daily life.

      That’s weird! I wonder if it’s related to security concerns for South Korea. Seoul is pretty close to the border.

    Historical Korea included even more than the Korean Peninsula, well out into the Liaoning and Manchuria. There are still Koreans living across much of Manchuria today.
    Also I know it had to be a bit simplified, but the provisional government established by Koreans was already a bit more left leaning. The People's Republic of Korea was made up of citizens' committees and these were dismantled and abolished in the south whereas in the north the Soviets fostered their growth and allowed them to become dominated by communists.
    For a long time the fortunes of both countries were about equal, if not favoring the North, until the South experienced the Korean Economic Miracle over the 70s and eventually threw off its dictatorship (I know you don't want to get into politics but I'm surprised you didn't mention the economic miracle or the dictatorship) whereas the North became more militaristic and underwent widespread famine in the 90s which was only made worse by North Korea's isolationist policy of economic self-reliance.
    First international hit I remember is Gee by Girls' Generation from 2009.

      I definitely can’t get into everything in the video, and also don’t know everything, of course. So the comments are a good place for people to elaborate and give clarifications. 👍🏻
