Sega GENESIS / Mega Drive II | Black Screen of DEATH! & Bad Audio!

  • A friend of mine asked me to take a look at his Mega Drive 2, as it was only showing a blank screen and not playing any games! It also appears to have a problem with the sound, producing a beeping/crackling noise!
    Let's see if we can repair it!
    Hope you enjoy!
    Steve
    PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

      The most hilarious thing is that he still believes himself that the issue was because someone was attempting to mod it, while the truth is that the console just had dirty connectors and the shorting was caused entirely by him at 5:04. That guy need better glasses :D

    Hi, if you get yourself a cheapish air compressor with a narrow air gun attachment they're invaluable when dealing with electronics. They blow away all the dust/ grime and detruis really easily. It gives you a nice clean area before starting any repair. Definitely worth the investment as cleaning the internals of any console/ computer is done in seconds. Love you vids by the way.

    Good video Steve, been waiting all week for it, going on CZcams between classes every day to see if you(or mymatevince) have uploaded anything fun/educational to watch since spending 15 hours on campus some days just suck and I definitely need that break between just to relax and watch these fixes, but I also understand that editing these videos can be an entire project itself and take time too and also that life gets busy, just keep focusing on givingus the same great contentyou usually do and don't worry about rushing for the video. Also I wanted to mention/thank you for having the wii-mote repair video I saw it a while back and I did end up with some broken wii motes and your video made fault finding some of them pretty quick, no way would I have found that fuse 1 on my own to test; I still have a few broken wii motes though that I can't figure out what's wrong with them so I'm gonna give 2 of them a reflow when I get a minute of free time, and there's another wii-mote (with motion plus) that had a smd capacitor explode and it caused a good bit of corrosion damage so that one's gonna be a fun fix, gonna have even more fun finding a replacement smd capacitor for it, but I suppose I can always steal one from the other two wii motes if I can't get them working; I'll probably give you an update as a comment in a future video when I eventually get it done, but for now I think it's gonna be a while since I ran out of space and have no deskspace for my new hot air reflow station

    After spending the last 15 years only playing the Megadrive on emulators, it shocked me how much slower the real system runs when I bought one last year. I always thought it was a bit of an urban myth that the US version was so much faster but things like sonic are markedly different.

      @@nicholasgreen2012 err yes we do.
      You are talking about more lines being advantageous ...on a CRT...where the primary mode of connection was RF output? This argument stands for the original xbox 360 and 720p v 1080i/p but not for 16-bit hardware.
      Also I prefer a faster game on NTSC format. Mario Kart, Streetfighter, Sonic...all faster on NTSC. I don't really care where the programmers where from and why they slowed down the experience.

      No, you can see it very clearly at 5:04 how there's a metal piece coming out of the soldering iron and connects the pins(the 5th and 6th pins from left to right at the bottom) So you did this shorting accidentally, I guess the problem with the console was dirty connectors. @@StezStixFix

    • @RWL2012
      @RWL2012 Před 2 lety +1

      That's a licensing message displayed by the TMSS (Trade Mark Security System) which is in a boot ROM that's in Mega Drives made from September 1991 onwards (Model 1 VA5 onwards).
      It checks for a "SEGA" text string in the game cartridge's ROM header, and the idea was, if that was present, that message "produced by or under licence from Sega Enterprises Ltd" would display (and the game would boot), and therefore the game publisher would be claiming to be one of Sega's licensed third-party publishers and that their game was licensed by Sega, so if that wasn't true they could take the publisher to court...
      This was after a company called Accolade had reverse-engineered the Genesis and published unlicensed games that worked on Model 1 consoles up to VA4 (made until August 1991) without the TMSS boot room (the Model 1 VA2 Genesis had come out in August 1989, so the Genesis was made without TMSS for 2 years).

I bridged 3 pins and then in my panic (mega idiot) turned it on and of course it didn't work. I tried to desperately remove the solder but made it slightly worse (might have bent a pin a little bit), I didn't have the right equipement and only did some soldering before my attempt (not sure why I thought this was a good idea lol). Could I still save my SNES or is it a goner? I would've linked a pic, but youtube really doesn't like linking.
