German fan visits St Louis City SC - there is no way this club is only a few months old!

  • St Louis City SC, founded in 2019, are playing their inaugural MLS season and are already leading the Western Conference with 44 points. Although not in their best form over the last few matches, I still see them as favourites to keep the 3 points in St. Louis.
This is the first time I have applied for media credentials and one day before the match, after I already purchased a ticket on StubHub, the media credentials were approved, causing a nice little personal plot twist in this video.

Saint Louis is in many ways the spiritual heart of the Beautiful Game in the United States. Local Italian and German immigrants brought the sport to StL, where it flourished.
The 1930 US national side finished 3rd in the WC. The 1950 WC squad famously defeated England, and outplayed Spain for 70 minutes before losing. Both teams were composed mostly of players from Saint Louis - few of whom were proper professionals.
As a youth, I played on what we thought was a pretty decent U-15 squad. We dominated our league and did well in regional tournaments. Then.... we played against a side from Saint Louis and received rather a rude education. The score was respectable - we lost 3-2. But, both our goals were flukes and they should have had at least six.
Long winded way of saying that it's no shock that StLSC is well supported. The locals know the game.

The team was from Florissant. I don't recall the name of the actual club. It was nearly 40 years ago.
I've got no idea how good they were relative to local competition. For all I know, they were cannon fodder. All I know for certain is that they were far better coached, better funded, and more technically sound than we were - by miles.

Enjoyed your video! I'm a 63-year old man who lives in the St. Louis area (In Illinois, 45 minute drive north of St. Louis), and grew up a football/soccer fan. St. Louis has deep and rich tradition in football dating back to the 1870's. When I was a kid, I was a fan of the old North American Soccer League's (predecessor of MLS 1968-1984) St. Louis Stars, which fielded a team of primarily St. Louis players. St. Louis teams dominated U.S. amateur and collegiate soccer during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. The last year the St. Louis Stars played, 1977, I saw them play the New York Cosmos at old Busch Stadium. The Cosmos had Pele (his final season), Franz Beckenbauer, Georgio Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto. The Stars won 2-0. St. Louis had a professional soccer league from 1907 through 1938 (St. Louis Soccer Football League, St. Louis Soccer League).

MLS is interesting. They're smart in picking cities that already have a lot of immigrants who already have a lot of passion for soccer.
They also have a cult following within urban city progressives and the LGBTQIA+ community. They don't know as much about soccer, but they embrace the culture and are learning.
I used to live in St. Paul and it's definitely an urban thing.
Immigrants and progressives are their draw. Families and suburban fans haven't latched on so their reach is limited. At least it's like that in Minnesota.
I'll watch the Loons highlights and i've been to Allianz, but if you look at the supporters and their scarves, shirts, and signs, you feel like you're at a gay antifa rally, not a soccer game.

We're also kind of the heartbeat of US soccer as a whole. That's why it feels like they shouldn't have this type of atmosphere because we're a new club. But we've been wanting a soccer team for so long. It's only natural that when most of the talent comes from St. Louis for the country. That if you invest in a team in that city, they're going to do well. And it's not just at the park. There's a whole new bar that opened up called the pitch right next to it that shows games. And on the app for the club it shows every bar in the city that shows games. And they're almost always full when I go.

Lots of this Country has surprising "Soccer" aka "Football" cultures. Supposedly St. Louis is one of those historic soccer hubs. Real Old timers call it the "capital" of Soccer in US, like before the 1990's, apparently a lot of early immigrants who played were St. Louis based. Another one is in Pennsylvania (interestingly where Christian Pulisic is from, in Hershey). One of the more historic clubs is based in Pennsylvania. The St. Louis club just tapped into the culture and soccer fandom that was already there. It might take generations for certain aspects to organically develop, such as the entire stadium developing its own culture (think BVB's "wall" or Liverpool's "YNWA"), but some are already kinda getting there, such as RSL's "Believe" anthem.

I grew up in Uruguay for a few years. In 1988 I came back to the US. We still had no MLS.
Now, look at an expansion team and it's infrastructure. It's incredible. In Uruguay we were "hoping" to get the 2030 WC along with Argentina and Paraguay. In Uruguay a middle of the road top division teams wishes it could have a practice field like many MLS teams.
The US will eventually be competitive in football internationally. Kids love to play it. The money is there at the pro level. Next step is to be more organized at the youth level. Football is the most popular sport with kids, but it needs more investment from US Soccer with it's current and retired players being a part of the youth movement.

I enjoyed your video with its focus on the new stadium and the fans. You would have also seen the large practice facility and headquaters across the street next to Union Station. I think the cheering section got off to a good start having a minor league soccer team here for years. I worked by this location for many years and mainly remember it being an off ramp. I read that of the 20,000 season tickets that make up most of its capacity there were requests for many more (60,000).. St. Louis has had Catholic Youth League soccer since 1947 of which my family all participated and now I believe has the largest Bosnian immigration in the U.S. as a start for its fan base. That being said, St. Louis is so fortunate the owners of local Enterprise Car Rental and others privately buillt the new stadium. St. Louis recently went through a very bad experience when its NFL football owner Stan Kroenke preferred the much larger TV market of Los Angeles so he moved the American Football team called the Rams away from a publicly funded 20 year old St. Louis stadium. I think the St. Louis City SC owners are very surprised themselves as to how much soccer interest there is in St. Louis. The key for finally getting an MLS soccer team in St. Louis was the private funding of a new stadium.. Just a great addition to the Cardinals baseball team and the Blues hockey team here. Cannot forget the many great fans of a new XFL spring league football team called the Battle Hawks that are like a minor league football team that now replaces the Rams. It was good seeing your perspective.

    • @larryloveless2967
      @larryloveless2967 Před 8 měsíci

I think the St. Louis situation was even worse because the stadium was only 20 years old and once threatened by its owner to move worked fast to get local approvals to build a new stadium to meet the owner's demands but still needed owner contribution. Attendance was never an issue. L.A. however does have a much larger TV market and once lost the Rams anyway to St. Louis over a stadium issue back in 1994. St. Louis also lost a prior NFL football team it had for a long time back in 1988 called the Cardinals over a stadium issue so they moved to Phoenix. I should have called the XFL team more like a winter league than a spring league. For me it just all points back to how fortunate St. Louis was to get the new soccer team with its stadium privately funded instead of publicly funded. Your book sounds interesting. It really hurts when a city loses a team and attendance is not an issue but the issue is on how good is the stadium. For St. Louis its stadium was fine for us in the Midwest. We simply like to have a good team with good players but for the most part follow the bad seasons as well. @@saschafox

Stl uses a high pressing counter attack style in most game although when FC Dallas went down a man they switched to a more possession based game and that’s probably why they struggled so much to score since it was the first game they’ve had over 60% possession and ended the game with 67% possession which is unheard of for Stl SC since they’re usually at the very bottom of the MLS when it comes to possession.

I truly believe a lot of this passion is a result of the St Louis Rams being moved to LA. That kind of thing tears the heart out of a city, and a lot of the fans were waiting for another outlet for that support. Also it would have been a nice fuck you to the Kroenkes to name their club the St Louis Rams, and use their old logo which I assume is no longer copyrighted since the NFL team was moved.

A lot of MLS' newest clubs (Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, LAFC, Cincinnati, Austin, STL), they're part of what the fanbase refers to as "MLS 3.0". MLS 1.0 was largely dominated by LA Galaxy (and David Beckham and co.). MLS 2.0, and I'm shamelessly a fan but it's really impossible to make an argument otherwise- MLS 2.0 has been Seattle's time. Who will be (if any) the dominant club in the next 10 years? Who knows.
But all of the clubs joining the league now, are falling in line providing a pretty good experience. I don't personally see STL maintaining form for years. But a wonderful debut year for them.
