    Curious one, this one...My heart, too, was pumping waiting for this one. My initial reaction was that I was, oh, a little disappointed that they'd gone down the 'quirky' route once again (I've grown to love it). I checked out this band last year and wow, they have such a strong, thoughtful and intelligent discography - check out Be Mine, Dream On, Come Back. They are much more mainstream than this. Then I got it - ESC is their window to the world and a couple of viral videos will do them no harm whatsoever. This band has real potential that, at present, is underrated by the quirkiness of their two ESC songs. They deserve so much respect and, given their ESC window, that just might happen...

    Hiya Tom - hello post-Eurovision. When you reacted to The Roop I posted a comment saying that, although I liked the entry, I was a little disappointed they had gone down the 'quirky' route once again. After On Fire I'd looked into their back catalogue, and they are a really thoughtful, intelligent rock band, and you might be surprised by their contemporary rock style prior the their ESC entries. I always suspected that entering ESC with a gimmick was an opportunity to bring them to a wider audience and I really hope the repetition of a gimmick won't harm them in terms of their artistic credibility.
    First and foremost - Be Mine. What a stunning song and an an amazing video embracing diversity. czcams.com/video/4233oh2g_lY/video.html

    Hi Tom Scrolling back through your 2021 reactions... Found The Roop. This is a tricky one for me as I loved On Fire but also delved back into The Roop's back catalogue. This is a really innovative and thoughtful band but On Fire is just SO untypical of their usual output. I suspected last year that On Fire was a novelty that might bring them attention on an international stage and then maybe draw an audience to their more traditional rock/dance aesthetic
    As such, I was a little disappointed that they returned this year with another choreographed novelty (I wonder if that was influenced by the lead singer's appearance on the Lithuanian version of Strictly Come Dancing?). Musically and artistically they are so, so much better than this.
    The Roop ABSOLUTELY need to be discovered with tracks like Dream On, Come Back and Be Mine,. All of their videos are incredibly thoughtful and they present a concept of ideas and depth behind their songs. The video for Be Mine actually made me cry. It's quite stunning. It should make it to eurovision shouldn’t it ? It’s more “alternative” when compared to “on fire”, a bit darker (not in a bad way) if you want, as “on fire” was more upbeat. Anyway we’ll see. I think they would have been a very very very close second in 2020 (behind Switzerland). Maybe they can go the extra step this year.

      yep its coming this week

  • @konstantinospapaioannou2588

    Let's be honest.... Discoteque is just AMAZING. A theatrical and catchy piece with a light feeling of a modern reading of the 80's along with deep house touches. It has identity, originality uniqueness, depth, and this ultra charismatic performer who in himself becomes part of the song. A daring effort that defies the typical ESC recipe, which I find good. BUT: I am not even sure that they will end up in the stage of Eurovision 2021. Lithuania doesn't seem to want to win the contest, and maybe that's why they subject the Roop once again to the challenge of the national final. Fishy. And even if it is too soon for conclusions, Albania and Israel have already chosen their not strongest candidate songs, in my opinion. That may reflect a general tendency this year. Let's hope not.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 3 lety +1

      hmmmm to be honest, i dont really get the "not wanting to win" argument in anything other than a hosting country. I agree that It's usually quite obvious the host doesnt want to win again, although most of the time they are probably just too busy organising the event to get a decent song. I think winning Eurovision is EXTREMELY difficult. Look at Malta and Cyrpus, who still have never won after all these years. Even someone who puts in 100% with an epic song is really only guaranteed top 10 nowadays, the standard in the final is so high.

    • @konstantinospapaioannou2588
      @konstantinospapaioannou2588 Před 3 lety +2

      @@ESCTom I believe Lithuania does not want to win because:
      a) of the common sense. A small country with a not very stable financial situation would not like to put itself in an extremely money consuming adventure. And let's be honest. Especially during the last years, we have seen National finals where the obvious favourites were disregarded and robed, and instead really weak songs were chosen to represent the respective countries in ESC. That's not a coincidence.
      b) The fact that Lithuania organises AGAIN a national final where the Roop will have to compete again. Why??????? They were selected last year, they are the unofficial winners of ESC 2020, and all countries with strong contestants last year kept them for this year, too, without extra NF (Bulgaria, Switzerland, Iceland, Malta, Israel).
      As for winning the contest, it is NOT that hard. Yes the level is too high, BUT: There is a EUROVISION recipe. Originality in mainstream context. In other words: Fresh, authentic sounds and compositions that do not reach the extreme. And generally minimalist stagings. The Roop do meet these "requirements", and that's why they are dangerous to win. Let's see.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před 3 lety

      hey konstantinos, i can totally see some of your points. However, One of the reasons I believe they didnt pick The Roop automatically is because they had just revamped their national final into PIN and maybe they didnt want to immediately stop that the year after. If their goal is to continually provide good quality entries every year, they need to have that national competition outlet where they can develop performers. They cant just rely on a single band as that isnt a viable long term strategy.

Must be something else. Could be that the Lithuanian jury's ears are not in the right place, or their egos may get the best of them (as the jury is made up principally of other artists)... but that is not exclusive to any country, or jury.

      @@bigg2988 Your basiclly saying that Lithuania has to be like Sweden, why not romania, serbia, greece, montenegro, north macedonia, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, belarus, Slovakia, Czheck republic? Every single one of those country's had no good songs. I don't understand your point.

    No need to worry here Tom.......if Lithuania fails to select this, they not only should be thrown out of ESC but charged with crimes against humanity!!......dramatic or what????🤣
    The " live " is equally as impressive, as we knew it would be.......its what i was saying earlier about the difference between "artists" and " performers"......The Roop are undoubtedly artists. (Don't wish to be too harsh but maybe Eden from Israel is in the other bracket) "Discoteque" is a natural progression from "On Fire", slightly more complex, mature and involved....
    "On Fire" was my winner last year and although far too early to say, so early in the season, i can't see this outside of the top 5 in Rotterdam.....
    Well done The Roop and i can take a mighty sigh of relief.....fingers crossed for Gjons Tears, Viktoria, Jeangu 🤞🤞🤞

      lol i remember when Margaret's "cool me down" came out and it was number 1 and then the total outrage when she came second (in fairness, her performance was atrocious and Michel Spak's was great).
      Yea i agree that Discoteque has more complexity to it. I wouldnt mind a tiny little revamp in that 3rd chrous to build a little more progression into it.
      Was "on fire" your final number 1 last year?! I was so bad about my 2020 final top 10 video because i had too many ideas about it and ended up procrastinating.

      Only slight difference is that she can't hold a tune live ( miaow!)......
      Tom, i have to point you in the direction of Portugal.......winner alert??????
      Back to Lisbon 2022?........wouldn't object to that!
      Won't spoil it for you.........bet you don't agree with me..🤣🤣🤣🤣🙊

    Not that it's super important but what exactly is schizophrenic in this music-video? Being schizophrenic doesnt mean multiple personalities. Having multiple personalities is the dissociative identity disorder.

    It's very.... Russian. Ukrainian actually. Like Kazaky PG version? Not sure yet, whether I more than like it, in a Eurovision context.
    The live version will improve it because they are exceptional performers, just to see how much.

    Not sure what's the goal of this song... it's not Lithuanian type, could be japanese as well. Surely, this country has no idea of what ESC is about. Do I like the song? yes... as I like other urban thousands of musics you can listen to from New York, Tokyo, etc... so what? nothing new...

      Reality check: Lithuania brought "Lithuanian type" songs, folk stylized and all, to the ESC several times. The outcome? - Guaranteed bottom finish. It is actually good if more people can memorize AND relate to the tune. Even if there is no 100 per cent recipe for success.
