  • Commercial key blank handles/grips for impressioning offered on the market today range from $50-$130 which is very pricey and If you don't know if impressioning is for you or if you will be good at it, you do not need to spend the money buying a commercial product. You can simply make one yourself for FREE (or $1 if you do not have the set screws).
    IMPORTANT: When pick what "material" to use for your handle, make sure you get something as WIDE as possible so it will have the most possible surface area to grip the bow of the blank. The wider the gripping part the stronger the hold and less ware on the tool.
    Here is the list of tools need for this project:
    1. Screw driver
    2. Hacksaw
    3. Bench Vise or Table Vise
    4. Needle files or Dremel w. Cut of Wheel
    5. Drill bit 9/24 and Tap 8-32 (8 is the size and 32 is threads per inch)
    6. Set screws 8-32 or 4mm (Any length over 4mm long).

    Lol. Normal impression tools are free too if you already own them.
    I just use my hands. But if I were ever to have a tool, it would be something like this.
    Good job! I love DIY gear. Definitely favorite and sub. Thanks Papa Gleb!

      Jeff you already know but see my reply to Jims comment. If I would know about this tool, I would have went with it instead of the screw driver.

    I am all about making my own tools, and since impressioning is something I am trying (and failing at currently) I will be making one of these. Vice grips just aren't cutting it... Thanks PG! Great video!

      Ith, if you aren't a member already go register at keypicking.com. There are plenty of threads including mine which really helped me get started and I'm certain it will help anyone interested in Impressioning. The real key is to set yourself up for success because a few failure can really be discouraging.

      Papa Gleb yes, very discouraging. I'm registered at keypicking.com. I'll have to look more for info there. Thanks!

    That is a great idea. A way of saving money.

      So true Jim. Especially for beginning impressioner. Why spend 50-100 bucks on a tool to possibly realize impressioning is not for you. Plus this thing also works as a Tail piece turned for IC core padlocks. Not sure if I mentioned it in the video.

      Papa Gleb
      Yes true. I will build one of these next week and give you credit for bringing it to my attention.

      Jim, if your seriously considering making it, I have a better handle to work with. Enter windshield removing tool into Amazon and you will see a tool for about $25. Obviously we don't need the tool but look at the handle of it. Very nice solid steel handle. It's not free but it's probably the cheapest best thing. You will need to do a bit of work making the slit/cut a bit bigger for keys to fit and possibly drill/tap another hole but the results will be better than any screw driver.

    • @TexasJim
      @TexasJim Před 9 lety

      Yes that is right. I already have the solid steel and a way to get it turned down on one end. I will research this futher and see what I can come of with. I will let you know.

      It also servers as a IC tail piece turner.

    Put a small hose clamp on it to keep it from spreading apart.

    • @PapaGleb
      @PapaGleb  Před 6 lety

      Tuna Fish not sure how a hose clamp would work with a key inside. But I have already moved onto a professional tool which I love very much and has been serving me for 2 years now if not more so $60 well spent.
