Great video. Here's some stuff I do to save power:
    - wear long thermal underwear, preferably merino wool. Really makes a difference.
    - wear woolen clothing. Cotton such as jeans never really keeps you warm.
    - turn the heating off at night between bedtime and an hour or so before getting up. You don't need it on during the night.
    - use heavy thermal curtains, these will keep the room warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
    - have a blanket over you when sitting on the sofa watching TV etc, and over your knees at your desk when working.
    - if using the oven, fill it with as many dishes as possible. If you don't have anything else to cook, fill a metal pan with water to heat up for the washing up.
    - cook with a haybox. You can make these for pennies. I made mine with a plastic storage crate and pieces of an old duvet.
    - cook with a thermos flask. This is a great way to cook lentils, for example.
    - when you boil the kettle, pour any excess water into a thermos flask to use later
    - wash in a cold shower. You can do this by gradually turning down the heat every day, until it is cold. Your body will get used to it and it is good for your immune system.
    - if you have an open fireplace, use this for cooking as well as heating the room.
    - use freecycle to find free firewood, or put out an enquiry on your local Spotted Facebook page asking for free pallet wood.
    - use a USB nightlight on your computer if you just need a little bit of light while working on your computer, instead of turning on the lights in the room
    - if you don't have double glazing, you can use clingfilm (saran wrap) over the windows to double glaze them.
    - plug all draughts with home made draught excluders.
    - to save on AC in the summer, open doors and windows on the shady side of the house in the morning. Keep curtains closed on the sunny side. Change over during the day as the sun moves round the house.
    Hope this helps.

I was asked to check on my neighbor's trailer during their extended summer vacation. They had emptied the fridge, unhooked all electrical appliances and kept their blinds and drapes drawn. They had set the AC at 85 degrees. Temperatures had reached into the high 90's and another neighbor had noticed that their AC had not once switched on and so they were concerned that the AC wasn't working and the house was going to get overheated and moldy. Much to my surprise, the house was surprisingly cool and comfortable. Indoor emperatures were in the upper 70s, a tolerable level for many. This impressed upon me how much heat is generated by simply living in the house. Bathing, cooking, laundry, TV, appliances, refrigerator, were all generating a level of heat that necessitated AC! So as you have demonstrated, mindfulness can save alot of money.

I used to do the hang out clothes and open all curtains ( still do in winter) but in Texas it's not an option . I agree on making bed to help with mild depression. Also getting up taking a bath /fixing hair ,makeup if you wear and getting dressed each day ! I go sit out side if I get depressed. If you hang your curtains so that when they are open, they are to the sides of the window and don't cover any of the glass, you can gain even more natural light. This means longer curtain rods. If they are the hollow round kind, you can add another support bracket in the middle, if needed, and insert a dowel or old broom handle as an extension, painted to match the rods.

As far as entertainment systems I use a power surge protector cord with the power shutoff switch on it , so I don't have a dozen things to unplug and yes you can live with a wind up alarm clock , you get used to the ticking noises and never hear it , quite soothing for sleep also .

Thank you. I was one of those that read the energy saving tips from my power company years ago and read that a 100 watt light bulb costs 8 cents per hour( at that time), so your 600 watts would equal 48 cents per hour just left plugged in. That to me is alot! I am still a single mom with limited income due to being disabled and went so far as to keep a long heating pad in the center of a double bed that I shared with my young daughter in the winter months with my daughter to save on heating costs. I was able to check my meter( before they installed the "smart meters" and tell which heaters and appliances used the most energy. The radiator stlye electric heaters( usually $40) were the best, which we used very sparingly, with a pan of salt water/eucalyptus leaves...on top (an absolute must for sinuses...) With only using the heating pad 3 times a night, I would wake up and turn it on for my daughter and it auto shut off after 20 minutes. I also woke an hour or two before my daughter and sometimes turned on the gas stove in our living room, shutting it off as we left for school. That house had a large tree covering a good size portion of that rented home, which made it much much colder than my immediate neighbors in N.W. Florida. It often felt like a freezing cave in the late winter and people would be in tee shirts when I reached the school, after a mile walk one way. Lol. Anyway, I even unplugged my coffee pot after it was done brewing and just warmed my coffee in the microwave, after seeing how fast the meter spun around while plugged in and left on. Keeping refridgerators and freezers full ( even with just water)causes the motor to kick on , much less frequently. When thinking about it, I would also go so far as to take frozen jugs from the freezer and place in the refridgerator, often next to milk( making it taste even better and prolonging it's freshness). I also used a clothes line and had $27-$28 electric bills in the fall and spring months. I was able to put our airconditioner setting at 75-80 degrees in the summer months and because of that large tree too, feel comfortable. Prior to that, living in a nicer trailer, I put precut, clear plastic( that was hardly noticeable) around the north end, skirting to keep that blowing wind from going under it, making the floors so cold. My daughter liked "floor time" crawling around...as a baby. That plus clear plastic on the windows, that you use a blowdryer to make tight( by duck brand) got my natural gas bill so low that a rep from Blossom Gas, actually had to come in and take a look around. He was a very nice guy and I was a little proud of my simple efforts...lol. I also ended up using that same type of plastic on my windshield of my newer Ford Escort after hurricane Dennis threw a 75 year old tree on our house and car( my daughters dad passed away 11 months after that which finished off the home and 23 months after hurricane Ivan which did considerable damages as we were less than a mile from the bay, where everyone saw the bridge to Pensacola that got ripped apart leaving a man and his family trapped on a section, to ride out that storm.)I ended up doubling that plastic on the windshield and could travel up to 65 mph before it bowed in and touched my knuckles on the steering wheel. Completely vclear.. we even had two birds hit it and bounce right off, continuing to fly. Some crazy funny and extremely scary stuff but we were desparate. I acquired two bulged discs that were incredibly painful, along with other damages. We do what we can, to do what we must and raised an awesome child, who would make any parent proud. Good luck to others and hope some of the energy saving tips really help someone else. It goes against all of nature to not at least try to survive and have some form of quality of life. I still meet many jealous people withwhom refuse to do much to help themselves, but want or act like they deserve my surpluses and rewards...I had to call someone out on it just last week because they use the laundromat and I have permanent and very painful head, neck and back injuries and still handwash in the tub and hang clothes against the airconditioner outside, that blows very hot air. In a tiny effiency apartments we have to run the ac at 60 to prevent mold issues with my teen daughter, I,a dog( we had to get to alert me...)and our two cats( like, if not- emotional support animals we've had for many years)all inside breathing... Yes, it helps considerably. Anyway-good luck to all and hope it helps others who are struggling or those who just don't like throwing money away needlessly. Sincerely,Christine( for anyone that can't do certain things at certain times- been there, done it...it's all good!👍😀✌😎👶👧👩😻😻🐕🌀🌎☔🌈💪🚨😱😵😖😦😲😓😢😅😭😔😌😂😘😌💖😝🙎💞🎓💞💖it is what it is.....

I'm in Tennessee, we pay $0.13 per kilowatt/hour. I don't go by the rates listed as there are so many fees. I take the total bill $ divided by the number of kw/h used, it's about $0.13, which is typical around the country as long as you're not in New York or California or some commie place. That means it costs 13 cents to run 1000 watts for an hour. 100 watts would then be 1.3 cents per hour.

I'm thinking about getting a small tent to put up in my bedroom to save on heating in the winter. I don't go on holidays as I don't feel comfortable travelling on my own or camping on my own, so putting a tent up in winter, for me would feel like a holiday. I call it "At home camping".It would also save me some money by not actually going on holiday away from home. The added bonus is if I need the toilet in the middle of the night, I won't have to stumble around in the dark tripping over guide ropes from other people's tents. I know it sounds like a crazy 😜 idea but it's not much different to a kid creating a tent in their bedroom to play in during lockdowns. For kids it's creative play for me it's practical.

Heating & cooling are, by far, the largest expenses in every household. I already do all of the things that you mentioned with the exception of the additional insulation. I was just looking today to see how much it would cost to add add'l insulation to my attic. I have gone one step further & shut my water heater off unless I'm actively needing hot water. The issue I have with your comparison is for colder climates. It costs markedly more to HEAT anything than it does to cool...that's one reason clothes dryers guzzle energy so badly. Anyway, even if you put in a wood stove or fireplace insert you may be saving money on your electric bill but you are just transferring what you save in electric to what you spend in wood. There may be a little savings but people need to realize the majority of the cost is still there....just in a different energy medium.

This lets you live with higher room temperature while sleeping at night in a hot climate: Use an air mattress. The air inside the mattress circulates and carries heat away from your body. A regular mattress traps the heat next to your body and you have to set the room air conditioning to a lower setting. In the winter put a foam rubber pad on top of the mattress for insulation.
-Air mattresses develop leaks after some months, but the common glue E6000 fixes the leaks easily. You will create easy ways to find the leaks.

Prepper Princess - Thanks for this video. My Dad used to like to say, " A small leak can sink a great ship. " Your work here on CZcams reminds me of that often ! It also works in reverse sometimes: a single solar panel hooked up to a decent storage system can give you a reservoir of power ! (I have three 'solar generators' that act as power storage and delivery: suaoki , goal zero, sungzu. ) The convenience is that you can plug in the appliance to any one of these and it works ! (Within their maximum output limit) The lithium battery technology allows for long term storage, yet instant delivery. A "Safety Valve" against sudden power outages. Neat stuff ! ! Great information. I've been chasing lower power bills for quite a while and I agree with almost everything you say here.
Last year I bought a Landis + Gyr Ecometer 250. This thing communicates with my power meter 24/7. It allows me to turn on individual lights, appliances, etc and see the KWH they use AND the cost per hour of each thing in my house. If your house has a "Smart Meter" chances are you can get a similar monitor from your power company. Don't just go out and buy one without checking with the utility company first for compatibility. these MUST be paired with your meter by the utility company. It's a remote process and there was no charge in my case.
Like you, my last power bill was $38. That's with absolutely nothing running in my house except for the refrigerator and the power monitor. My water heater is an on demand heater so there isn't any cost there when it isn't being used. I've been caring for my mother (at her house) for a few months and I haven't even flipped a light switch during that time. This all leads me to believe that one's location may play a part in having the lowest bill. I'm only paying $.09 per KWH but I have a $20 charge plus tax each month just to have electrical service. Based on your recommendation I'll be lowering the setting on my refrigerator to see if I can get below $38.
One additional thing I have done is to put a series of AA battery powered, motion activated lights that will allow me to enter my house at night, get to the kitchen, the bathroom and in and out of bed without ever flipping a switch.

      @wishingb5859 Před 2 lety +6

Yeah, I hate delivery charges. If you own your own property, you might be able to get the free solar panels. My neighbor did that and loves it. I bought panels because the "catch" of the free solar way is that you need to keep it on your house for 20 years and it is a lease, so if you move in 10 years and the person who takes over the house doesn't keep the panels, suddenly you would have to pay for the panels. Both my neighbor and I only pay a little over $9 for electricity now and that is even using 1 wall air conditioner in the Summer and 1 Vornado space heater in the Winter. I live in New England and don't have a house that faces in the ideal direction for solar but it still covers me. The other "catches" is that you have to have a roof sturdy enough to hold solar panels and you have to have wifi. But my neighbor really didn't put even one penny down and went from over $100 per month electric bill to $9.23 or something like that and she has had it a few years and the $9.23 never went up.

My dryer broke a couple of years ago and I couldn't afford to fix it so I bought one of those drying racks that you can fit a load of clothes on and it works great! I've never looked back. I just hang all my clean laundry over the folding rack that I set up in my office under the ceiling fan because that is the warmest room in the house and it dries fastest in there. If I wash no later than the afternoon, I can wash a load one day and by the next afternoon the clothes are ready to be worn. The only issue is that you can only do one load at a time...except then I bought another drying rack that is big enough for me to hang over sheets and blankets, so now I can do two loads which was a game changer! With the smaller rack it was difficult to dry blankets and sheets but now I can easily do those and I love it! I also got 2 of these round hanging things that have a bunch of hanging clips on them that I hang on the shower curtain rod to dry all my socks, underwear and RUMPs. I can afford to fix my dryer now but don't have any plans to do so. There's no need and this saves me money.

Our public utility has us over a barrel. Before the very first electron flows into the house... and before the very first molecule of natural gas flows into the pipe, WPS charges a monthly hook up fee. Seriously. This is like having to pay a cover charge to walk into a supermarket. Our hookup fee is, of course, broken up into several charges and sprinkled around the four pages of every bill as a way to confuse consumers. It comes out to about $50 per month. THEN add gas and electricity... THEN add all the taxes and all the extra fees. It's a scam...

So, I looked at the brilliant idea of having the power and gas disconnected for the six months of "non-winter" here... but, several problems with that. First, they won't do it... for some reason, we are scammed into having to be hooked up. You cannot live in the house without utilities. Period. The nanny state says so. Next, they screw you coming and going... there's a massive hookup fee and disconnect fee. They have it all figured out...

I have thick sweatpants and sweatshirts that I wear to bed. I also use 3 or 4 layers of blanket to keep warm. This way, I never ever have to turn on the heater. Also, I rarely shower in the winter; I just "clean" with a towel during the day when it is warmer. It makes no sense to spend $400-$600 dollars a month for electricity. That's crazy to me. I can save this money! If I don't save, I could go into debt or bankruptcy if I lose my job. And then what? Homeless? So, it is better to be smart, thrifty, and save than to go hungry or homeless.

In my electrical engineering college course I learned that the heat/air system, refrigerator and water heater are the most expensive. Also, you can fully insulate your house but if the windows are thin or not sealed well, it won’t matter. Personally I think windows are more important.

When insulating your attic make sure you seal all the penetrations through the drywall before you place your insulation. Since you have already placed your insulation, simply remove the insulation and seal all those leaks. Pay extra attention to the header of all the walls in your home. They can let a ton of air, leak into the attic ;)

Smaller refrigerator is a great idea. We lived in a place with a smaller one and now prefer it. We also hang clothing to dry. There is a clothing rod made to install above the shower head and some places have a "dry clothing" fan setting or dehumidifier setting. Most of the time they are dry overnight. We also use space heaters vs. central air, split aircons via central. Looking forward to on demand water heater, which we've had a whole house version elsewhere.
