Curl like a flower reminded me of a "shame plant". Its not a flower but it's beautiful. It is temperature and touch sensitive. When it's little sensors go off when you touch it, it folds itself.

Bismuth with a melting point of 271.8°C. And gallium with a melting point of 29.9° while the flash point of almost all woods is at over 300°C. Put gallium or bismuth on a hot plate capable of reaching at least 272°C / 525°F have it in a vacuum chamber see if the wood absorbs it

Gallium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulfur, iodine, indium, lithium, selenium, tin, and Bismuth 30°C - 271°C, 86°F - 525°F

The nib compresses because it was injection moulded and had a lot of internal stresses
The tube was probably extruded and didn’t have much internal stresses
Those internal stresses were frozen when the nib was cooled during manufacturing
But when it’s re heated and it’s softened, those stresses pull the plastic inwards therefore shrinking it
