love it Shane - you add so much to people's cycling
Absolute legend. I had exactly the same issue yesterday. New chain and cassette but this horrible feel. New chainrings on order!
Thanks for doing the grab test betweeen the old and new rings. I've seen that done before, but only on a worn out ring, so it's nice to see what it should look like on a new ring.
Thanks for cranking that video out! FYI, I use Locktite 242 (blue: weaker one) to keep chainring bolts from coming loose. From memory I think my older SRAM Force ones came from the factory like that
Nice work, Shane, especially after your little stunt with the iron.
have been using Praxi rings for a few years now and absolutely love then, they are cold forged alloy and last a long time
Have you tried the Buzz rings? I ordered a set but see many complaints.
Whenever I have a bike question Shane always has the answer.
Thanks for this Shane. Very informative. Subscribed!
This is just in time to be able to show a friend THANKS
Thank you Mr Miller for that simple, (well it became simple on watching the video) clear, easy to follow and very informative video. It's a pity I discovered this vid just a few days after buying replacement chain rings and cassette but hey ho at least I should have a hassle free drive train for a while and a sure fire way of checking it in the future.
Do you know of a similar style of visual tests for checking for cassette by any chance? ha ha ha
Cassette tests involve replacing the cassette with a new one... and thinking "Damn, this so much better...I should have done that long ago". :)
Another great video, Shane!! Thank you!
Moving to Praxis chainrings on my 2x XT mtb was amazing. The shifting is so my better than XT chainrings. Well worth the money.

Extremely unlikely that any praxis chainring is better then shimano
What rings did you buy?
Hi Shane & Good Morning, On my sirrus by specialized has the Praxis Works Alba Chain Ring 48/32 and so far enjoy bike, have 3 weeks. Using it for rehab after surgery and riding fun. Enjoyed your presentation 🚲👍
Are you using on a praxis crankset ? Praxis says one must use them with their cranks only!
I want to put them on my sirrus pro and keep seeing bad reviews. What is your opinion so far? Dropped chains or poor shifting?
Great tips thanks Shane!
Yay!!... compact riders unite!!👍🏼
Brilliant tips. Thank you.
I like the fact that these chainrings are compatible with both, hidden bolt and non-hidden bolt cranks. Good engineering right there. As of Quarq, from my experience slope always changes a little with different brands chainrings (and zero offset might change a lot but it's not a problem). The difference might not be worth doing another full static calibration though.
How do you find the shifting?
Great video.
Happy bike, Happy wife, Happy life! That needs to be put on a t-shirt or something 😂
While you're in there, wipe everything down. In my case, dried sweat corrodes the nooks & crannies where the rivet bolts meet. I put a bit of grease there before reassembling. Thi is on an Ultegra crank and Shimano doesn't call for it in their maintenance specifications, but I do it nonetheless. The dissolved sweat was evident with whiteness peeking through at the interface between the ring and the crank.
Hi Shane, Thanks for uploading the video. Any idea where to get the T45 tool. I have been searching that everywhere and not able to find one which is compatible to s-works crankset
How do you know if it is the chain or the chain ring that needs replacing? I would think, change the chain first and then if there is still not a smooth shift change chain ring.
I was hoping you would mention the orientation of the up-changing ramps
Was that Von's new t-shirt you're using when checking the chainrings? I won't tell
Wish you would've mentioned the hard to find crank extracting tool...(was it a Torx 45 with either a 1/4 or 1/2 inch drive end?). Also, don't know why you waited to torque the chain ring bolts until the crank was back on the bike.
I got the park tool torx 45 but it doesn’t seem to fit inside crankarm opening to loosen the crank set ? Am I missing something?
Hi Shane! Great video! Could you show us how you installed the Quarq power meter? Also, what camera set up are you using to film your videos? Many thanks!
The Quarq spider was installed at the bike stop. Press fitted onto the S-Works crank. Cameras are the Canon G7X MkII and Panasonic GH5.
Shane another excellent demonstration! Thank you. I have the same quarq power meter and need to test as its not working. I am finding it hard to remove. Does one need a special tool to separate the meter from the crank arm?
The Quarq on an S-Works spider needs a special tool, if I recall correctly.
Interested to know how she finds these? I found them crap compared with Shimano chainrings. The upshifting is nowhere near as good.
Shane...I have a 2018 S Works Roubaix with a Praxis Chainset that I'm just not happy with. Is there a way to change it with a Shimano Dura Ace 50/34 chainset? Do I need to change out the BB?
@Shane Miller, great video. How many Kms covered on the chain-rings ?
Lots! I’d guess 20k....
I'm surprised that the chainrings show that much wear at 20000 km. I've gotten over 20000 miles from chainrings. I do take very good care of the chain.
Hi, could I ask if you could show how to index the gears for a good clean gear shift, whilst on Wahoo kickr, I have new chain, cassette, chainrings. Using a 9 speed with the supplied washer. With road wheel in, sweet gear changes, on the Kickr something not quite right. Thankyou.
My wife and me experience the same on our Tacx Neos. I initially suspected that the freehub body of the neo is positioned slightly off compared to the wheel. On second thought, it might just be the difference in how tightly you close the quick release.
My thoughts too.... would appear to me, that its somehow pulling the chainline out of line slightly, with hard exertion.
probably just need a slight adjustment of limit screw each time you put it on trainer / bike
So does this help with rear mech shifting or just front???? I'd like to know how it helps for the rear shifting if so.
No
I want your life! Any thoughts on riding a TT bike? Did my first race and in fact my first outdoor ride on mine Saturday. I feel there is technique to be acquired.
Al Sayers Do some of your indoor training on the TT bike with work sets on the aerobars. Maybe have a mirror handy if you're still dialing in you position. But I wouldn't change it too much from how your bike fitter set you up.
As I watched other riders on the course, ahem pass me, they seemed very still on the bike while I felt...less so. I have been using the bike on the trainer.
approx how many km's from the old rings shane?
Way too many. No idea to be honest. It'd have been over 20,000km at best guess....
I seem to recall you want 10 nm for the bolts.
Alloy 8. Steel 10.
Hey sir i have a question. I have a sora 3550 crankset 110 bcd, can i fit any 110 bcd chainring in it?
No idea sorry. One for your local bike shop to look at.
Thank you sir!
How many miles did you put on those rings before this replacement?
I have no idea to be honest, a lot.
Are the Shimano 9100 and 8000 generation chainrings downwardly compatible with the 9000 and 6800 series cranks?
I''ve mixed and matched between 6800 and 8000. I could no longer find 6800 cassettes and bought an 8000 which I was told were interchangeable. A few weeks ago I replaced my Cannondale hollowgram crankset with a Quarq D-zero BB30 set-up and Praxis Buzz chain ring. It is smooth as butter and shifts better than ever.
Thanks Brian
The only part of the R8000 groupset not backward compatible is the crankset (if I recall correctly from GCN's first peek) - slightly different chainline but whether that is achieved via the rings or crankset is the question??? I think it was 0.4mm (again if i remember correctly).
bikeboy613 something about an R8000 crank not working with 6800 chainrings. Though I don't know who would try that
Can we get the video/review on Slane's new TT tomorrow??? :)
Sure. It'll be up later today (6-7hrs from now).
Shane Miller - GPLama thanks!
How is Von finding the See Sense Icon rear light?
She's taken it off my bike and hasn't given it back.... I'll assume that's a tick of approval.
I have the icon+ Battery life is crazy good. Did a 12 hour ride on flashing and 100% power and had 71% battery left at the end.
To sleep or to watch? Screw it Lama time!
what is the function of the pin on chainring?
To stop chain drops between the crank arm and chainring.
@@gplama if there is no pin, can the chain move from 39t chainring to 53t chainring? because I want to replace my old 53t chainring with 53t chainring without pin on it..
@@sinyo6977 They're not essential. Talk to a mechanic at your LBS for your specific setup/ideas though to be sure.
No Loctite on the bolts?
I didn't worry. They're pretty grippy to tighten up. I'll keep an eye on them.
Thought the same thing, Von won't be happy if they come undone during a comp.
had once a bolt coming out and getting stuck between the crank and the chainstay. Ripped the chainstay open, Frame was a write off
Just a drop of Loctite 243 could potentially save a lot of heartache.
Why not just replace the little ring for $20?
