A great tip i learned was for maple sides.less water is better ,it keeps the figured grains from folding.i was told to wet 4 sheets of paper towel and lay that on your pipe, and the wood on the paper towel it wets the wood , steam is still very hot and no scorching, try it you may like it.thanks for all the great vids, keep it up.
That is a lot of dedication to thickness those strips by hand, and I admire that!! Well don on the video, I am loving this series!
Thanks Mark..

And I thought I did a lot of sanding by hand... You make the bending look so easy, and as I know now it is.. when you practice a bit, the sides are not to thin and not to thick, and have a talent to work with patience! (not one of my best characteristics) Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Gerrit, the thickness is very important expecially with figured wood. Glad you're enjoying the serie :)
LOVE the thickness sander jig!!! I will absolutely use this idea. Without a drum sander we have to suffer for our art!
Yes, i did that for a while... I finally got a drum sander last year though. Glad this will be helpful to you:)
Tomy, wow dude!! The tips you're sharing are so useful...lots of good info happening here. What a project!!
Thanks Eloy!
I like your method for thicknessing the sides. That is a problem I haven't been able to solve with my tool set.
Glad this can be helpful... it is tedious and time consuming but it gets the job done... thanks for watching!!
Thanks for making these video's, it's really cool to see how you do everything and there is a lot of specific information that you are sharing.
Thanks Lars, glad you're able to get something out of the video:)
I want to try to make a conversion of a carved top mockingbird and then convert that into an acoustic. I know this is just dreaming for me now but when life is sorting itself out i'm sure I will get there.
+Lars de Waardt I'd be really curious to see that... Hope you get to try it..
A less expensive option for expanding each double inner part of the jig would be to dill holes for two threaded rods and use large washers and nuts to close the jig. This way the inner parts could be adjusted to the correct width and placed as a unit before putting a final few turns on the nuts.
You don't need to go to the gym for tone your arms. Very enjoyable series, thanks for sharing, man.
You're right there was no gym on that day:) glad you enjoy the serie!!
Very informative, nice work.
Thanks Gary
always informative.
+paul burch thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video. Couldn't you use a scraper to thickness the sides? It would probably be a third of the time and the shavings are much easier to deal with than dust.
I just had to watch them all again.
Lol... If everything goes well I should have the next video up this upcoming weekend..
woohoo. I've had 2 instruments fret dressed and setup and just dropped off my taylor guitar. Looking forward to the next chapter
Man that is awesome! I love that round heat thing that you use for the bending.. Did you make it?
Yes I did, there is a link in the description to a video where I talk about it..
maybe a thooted plane could be good for figured sides
Simone Camplani I agree, but I don't have one and to be honest never tried one.. I did heard good things about it though.. who knows I might get a drum sander for Christmas..
Did you at the end ;)?
Toothed blade and a block plane is the idea tool for thicknessing sides with highly figured wood.
What kind of sheet metal do you use bending your sides? Spring Steel? Alluminum?
Light gauge stainless. It doesn’t spring back to shape by itself but it was a lot cheaper for me since I was able to get off cuts from work
Hello there what other alternative simple side bending jig would you recommend for me? I live in a province here in Ph where i can not buy tools like from stewmac or something pricey... tnx for your reply
I made my own bending iron with a light bulb and a pipe, also have another where I use a blow torch. Here’s a link to them. czcams.com/video/VgcCPaUq5us/video.html
thank you . question please why not knock it down ( the side thickness ) with a power sander get it closer then hand sand ? i do not know its why i ask
I was just afraid I might go past the required thickness and become too thin. This gave me peace of mind:)
i see makes sense that way
Is using a pipe steam bender and bending the sides little by little better than using a steam box and doing the bends all at once?
+Eli Beke By steam box I'm assuming you are referring at an actual box to steam the wood and not the form with the heating blankets.. wood this thin really don't need much moisture, in fact if it gets over saturated it can bring an array of issues.. so assuming you are using a form to let your sides take shape between steel sheets, the steam box could work , if you want to go from the steam box to the rim jig like I did you will probably end up with cracks and splits.. Thanks for your comment ...
+Tomy Hovington thanks for the info and videos mate 👌
Good...
I would like to know if you made your own bending iron and if it uses a lightbulb for a heat source
john mcdonnell yes I did and it is a light bulb, I did get a lot of questions about it so I made a video about it, here's a link.., thanks for watching!

Neat
40 minutes to hand sand. man alive
It's a good workout.. I skipped the gym that day;)
I got tired just watching the video. You are superman in my eyes. I can't believe how fast you are tackling this job my man. This is my first custom instrument and after reading what all the other people have gone through in wait times, I am feeling so fortunate to have chosen you for this. Thanks so much
+Barry Wilson really happy you feel this way Barry, but remember we are still in the early stages of the build and there are still a lot of hrs of work remaining..
oh I understand. I built one instrument. an A style OM. and it was a kit lol. flat top and back. I've watched videos on guys carving arches and I bow to the talent. I'll stick to playing. I was expecting at least 8 months to be honest
Nicely done! What is the temp of your iron?
It gets really hot, but I don’t have any measuring device to know exactly the temperature. It can leave burn marks on the wood if too hot.
What Watt lightbulb do u employ in the bending tube?
Hi, I used a 200W light bulb, I have a video on this subject.. czcams.com/video/VgcCPaUq5us/video.html
Good side and waste side? I’m sorry but on a piece like those, there is no waste!
Haha! You are right.. and I still have the waste side and will use it on a another build in the future. Thanks for watching
