    When I was 17, I talked my Mom into buying a low mileage '64 Galaxie 500 XL 2 dr. fastback, black with a red interior and white roof liner, 352 4bbl. and 3 speed auto. I got as many compliments on that car from Chevy and Chrysler Corp lovers, as I did from Ford guys! My high school girlfriend's parents were well off and her Mom drove a loaded white Buick Convertible. One evening, I gave her a lift to a neighbor's house in the Galaxie and when she opened the door to get in, it lit up like Coney Island with all the various convenience and safety lights. She said, wow, this is a really nice car - what is it? When I told her she just said boy, I didn't know that Ford made a car this nice! She was not one to compliment, so that meant a lot to me! In my opinion, the '64 500 XL fastback was the best looking Ford ever made. Period!

    1964 Galaxy is one of the most beautiful cars FORD has ever made. This is the hard top version but the convertible is a candy on four wheels. When the American cars were real automobiles.

    Wow! Absolutely gorgeous! I always liked that mid '60's turquoise Ford color. First rate restoration and engine rebuild. Your 390 with 11.5:1 compression ratio has that sound only found in a big block. You're right about shifting your Borg-Warner. It's as smooth as silk. It's also amazing that you got the final displacement up to 455 CID.
    This is about as good as it gets with a 1964 Galaxie 500 XL.

    I was NOT, I repeat, NOT a rich kid. Born in forty nine, got one new from the factory, built by the factory..... black on black.... all the nice stuff on the order sheet was checked. I had won a emancipation from my step parents that had been done by a city sheriff along with the county marshal.... his nick name was "Handlebars" as his mustache was like a famous movie actor that normally I would remember. Self employed plus saving every penny earned or found. I had a nice old fifty one chevy one ton with single tires but lots of springs..... so hauled firewood or dirt, for folks that needed stuff I could get my hands on. Loggers would pay me to help clean up landings for their logging jobs to keep the forest service happy. Using a old piece of equipment they had abandoned, used it to push up dirt for the truck loads I hauled for people needing landscaping. I would also use it for pulling out the many pieces of logs that were broken or other issues for firewood. All part of cleaning their landings and got paid nicely considering that time of wages paid for any kind of work. I really wanted a fifty seven ford that had held my heart dear.. The car I got was a sixty four ordered by a wealthy logger and then he offered it to me for the hard work I dedicated for him. I guess it didn't hurt that his daughter was in love with me and he did not want a dumb kid with no future for a son in law. I do promise that I never ever jeopardized that girls safety as I really did like her too. Her dad was no idiot, being a kid once himself meant he knew I was going to race that car every opportunity for extra money. We were waiting for our age to work for getting married. In nineteen sixty six, I was seventeen, built ford tuff myself and was a hot head with the other boys around who had picked on me as native kid, my real mom had passed on but people knew who she was, and a lot of stuff not needed here. Now the town judge was also a man with a boy who loved my girl. Daddy took care to see that boy got what ever he wanted. The kid started a fight with me and of course I was ford tuff and he was a school boy who someone packed his books for. Now I did bruise him up but never really did a lot of damage to him. Never less, I wound up in jail and this judge said to me that the city, state and other people generally did not care for all of my fighting. This long story shortened a heck of a lot..... I got myself drafted in sense as I did sign all of their paperwork and off to Fort Bragg I went and later off to Nam. Yeah I might of did things different had I known then what I know now. Now I could but never ever will write a book on the ifs and whys of our not marrying. I knew my skin was a history sheet for anyone with a grudge to get me in more troubles. The sixty four ford Galaxie wound up in canada and when he found out that I had came home, he offered it back to me. Instead, I moved my happy butt to alaska to log for a big company up there. Just story after story that no one is going to believe and I say that because of how things were happening.. That alone was a adventure that made me a better person. I guess this is a good place to quit on this adventure alone. I still live in alaska and at the current age of sixty four, it really is a good place to stop with this. The only thing is, if able to drive, might of got another sixty three or four ford two door hardtop as they are a very nice rig. I do apologize for this too long comment

    I had a 64 that had a 406 Interceptor engine in it and I hopped it up with a high rise intake and a single 780 Holley, 3/4 Iskindiran race cam with solid lifters, full race headers with 3' pipes and dual exhaust with big long Cherry Bomb mufflers 4:11 gears posi traction rear and 3 speed on the floor. That second gear was extremely long, and when it shifted out of 2nd it would still chirp the tires doing over 75 mph. That thing was great on gas as long as you were on the highway doing over 60. I guarantee it got way up in the upper 20's/gallon on the road. I never really saw exactly what it did but just kinda figured it out in my head, it's what I remember. Best running Ford I ever had. Jad to put an insulation shield between the starter and the exhaust because if you ran it very long and you didn't wait long enough to allow the starter to cool of it would drag real bad because the copper coils inside the starter expanded way out of line and would not transfer the electricity to the starter. Wadn't real good when you needed to leave in a hurry but as long as you could park on any slight incline you could pop the clutch and go.

Your car is a perect balance of, well, everything. Sounds incredible at full Eagles, docile driver, fantastic shifter set up ( I understand the time it takes to get the clearances and throws right). Uh, why do you think it's 455 to 460 cubic inches? You should have the bore and stroke to 3 decimal places, which means the in.^3 displacement is to 2 decimal places. Ford's 390 and 427 had the same stroke, so a .030 over bore will give you a 395.8, not a 455.

    Nice car. Interesting fact is that prior to 1965 Ford FE blocks were black.

  • @molecricket1974
    @molecricket1974 Před 9 lety +7

    Neil, beautiful car and not trying to be a smart ass here but if the block is a 390 as stated, and bored .030 over for the TRW pistons, that produces a bore size of 4.08 [original 390 bore = 4.05] and if a 427 crank was used, that crank actually has the same stroke as the original 390 (i.e., 3.78). Now using the standard formula for determining cubic inches (bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinders x .7854), that gives you just under 396 cubic inches. Now IF you meant that you used a 428 crank (which has a stroke of 3.98"), then that same formula would produce a total of 416 cubic inches.
    The only way an FE series engine is going to produce close to 455 CID is if you begin with a factory 427 block [bore size = 4.234], bore it out .030, drop in that 428 crank, and that will produce 454.6 cubic inches which is the upper limit for displacement before you have to start notching the bottom of the cylinder casting for connecting rod clearance.
    The only other way to gain more displacement would be with a custom 'stroker' crankshaft with offset grinding to give you that extra stroke.
    Just out of curiosity, is that .600 lift NASCAR camshaft the factory item from Ford or aftermarket? That has to be the smoothest idling cam I've heard in a long long time.

    • @bobbybobberson3374
      @bobbybobberson3374 Před 6 lety +1

      All great points. And that 0.6'' cam would make for a lumpy idle. An idle this car didn't posses. I do know a 390FE can be bored and stroked to about 445cid before you have to go with aftermarket block...

  • @BobbyOfEarth
    @BobbyOfEarth Před 8 lety +2

    Beautiful Galaxie. I heard you say it had a 427 crank but I didn't hear you say that the 427 crank was stroked, if thats true then your displacement is gonna be different then stated because ..the 427 Ford FE crank and the 390 FE crank are the same stroke at 3.784 inches. If your 390 pistons are .030 over then your bore is 4.080, and with the 427 crank, ..your motor is actually 395.78 cubic inches. What makes the 427 FE motor ...427 cubic inches is the huge bore at 4.233 inches while the 390 bore is only 3.784 inches. I'm sure it'll easily make 400 HP and 435 lb. ft. of torque. Cheers...

    This is a fantastic car. Beautifully restored except for the wheels. This is a fine piece of history. One of the prettiest colors and I always loved Ford's turquoise interior from '59 up. Nice that he kept the original color. A '59 is my favorite with the '64 side by side with it. The '64 Mercury was also a very special car. I drove these a lot back in the day, a friend had a car dealership, so I got to drive what ever I wanted, for a very short period. I also worked there, cleaning and polishing some cars, part time. But...all this claiming about it being a big block...it is really more of a mid sized block. The Ford FE ranged from 332, 352, 361, 360 "T", 390, 406, 410 to 427 & 428 respectfully, with other truck engines.
    The real big blocks were two:
    #1- The MEL, 383, 410 (different than the FE), 430 and 462, with the first 400 hp American engine in 1958, a 430 with tri-power, Mercury Super Marauder. Very rare even though you could have the engine in a Lincoln, Continental, and other Mercury's, like the Mercury Montclair Turnpike Cruisers, Monterey's and Park Lanes.
    Then #2: the 385 series of engines that included the 429 and 460. I have read that the "385" was to be a minimum of cubic inches. Maybe? There were engines that were used in Super Duty equipment that was over 500 cubic inches.
    The FE was very widely used and very popular. It also could be rebuilt like this one here to what ever you want, mostly. A very flexible engine. Ford played with them using the 390 with a 428 crank to get the 410. Never drove a 410, so I can't attest to performance.
    My first love is still a 65-66 Thunderbird, all turquoise.

    @ckuehncnwhsyt Před 5 lety

    Not sure how you get 455 - 460 cid. At .030 over with standard crank your displacement will be around 396. Even assuming the maximum stroke provided by a 428 crank (3.98") you'd have about 416 cid. To get into your stated range you'd need somewhere in the neighborhood of a 2.25" stroke. Better redo your math.

    • @ckuehncnwhsyt
      @ckuehncnwhsyt Před 5 lety

      Correcting typo: You'd need a 5.25" stroke to achieve 455 cid at .030 over; not 2.25".
      Also, you state "427 crank." FYI, 427 crank, although forged steel, carries the same stroke as the stock 390 item (3.78").
      If there's something I'm missing here, please let me know.

    the math does not work how do you get 455 c.i.d. out of a 390 FE block with a 427 FE crankshaft when the 390 FE and 427 FE have the same exact stroke? P.S. IT does sound wickedly healthy.

    The big thing is. You can do what you want with the displacement on these engines. A 260hp set of heads are going to do just that, a 300hp set of heads are going to get near that and a 330hp set of heads are going to do in that range... Documentation required... You don't get more HP just by changing pistons and cam...
