  • We do a quick review on the 2017 Lexus CT200h F-Sport. A vehicle designed for those who don't want the quirkiness of a Prius and don't want a CUV. This hatchback has some charm but reaching a broad appeal in current form seems doubtful.
    The hatchback segment is getting better from the likes of Ford, VW, Subaru and soon Honda with the Type-R. Other luxury brands continue to offer alternatives as well.

      @renewer LOL..try owning a BMW after warranty, the "engineering" is to cost savings, more and more plastic and CAD to customer with no road testing. The new era of Chinese transmissions is upon us, which basically put Ford out of the car business. Now they just make vehicles for fat people.

    I love my CT200h for my daily, perfect commuter car, people say it's slow, it's not meant to be fast. I think the price point and the features and reliability involved, it is an excellent choice.

      People always complaining about how slow the car is. Speed is obviously not why you buy this particular car. I wanted something economical while not looking ugly. And the sport mode gives me enough pep to do the passing I need. Also, you can find great deals on used CTs. A low mileage Lexus - no matter the year - is basically like new.

I went with the LS for more room and s few other amenities- but honestly I may be selling my LS soon.. as I truly want the UX hybrid f sport.

      It's an aggressive looking thing, something my sister also agrees. However we both also agree the powertrain and its looks aren't that corresponding to each other.
      Still the sad bit is the CT will be going away after 2017 with its replacement (likely based off the new UX concept car) which is derived from the Toyota CH-R which is more a wee-SUV than a hatchback. Also given its size I'm not holding out on a performance variant with more than 200hp.

So I can drive faster into the back of the car in front of me? This car is primarily a hatchback designed for city driving. Why is it so hard to get that? And if you want a hybrid, a hatchback and a bit of luxury as you drive around the city, what else are you going to buy?

      @davidmaglioli7048 Před 7 lety +3

      its because you should expect a bit more for the asking price. 42k for that F Sport version. It also cheapens the F Sport line its like if Honda slapped Si on the Fit, and only stiffened the suspension. Speaking of Honda the Civic Hatch is actually a better deal. Top trim level of the new civic hatchback is $28k. With that you get pretty much everything this Lexus has and a bit more. Leather, remote start, back up camera, navigation, turbocharged engine. On the CT200H Navi and back up camera are an additional $3,500 option in addition to the $32k base price by the time you option it up to have many of the features the Civic already has on its base $19k trim you're looking at double what a base Civic would cost. In my opinion this car has no place in the market when there are far cheaper alternatives. The only reason anyone would buy this is solely for mpgs, but personally I don't think thats enough.

I do 90% of my driving in town so of course the fuel efficiency would be great as well. The downside being the lackluster driving experience. Sounds like the F Sport option may help the roundabouts and back roads be a bit more enjoyable, but everything else is just so blah. Such a shame because I really really like the exterior looks.

    Just bought a 2016 F Sport - pretty sure it’s the same color here: Atomic Silver.
    Yes, it’s slow, but it feels quick, likely due to the size and decent torque you get at the low end. Handling is great in Sport mode. No, not as good as my 2005 WRX STI on $2500 KW coilovers, but with the battery its got a low center of gravity and keeps it planted. Suspension is firm, but it feels good if you want to feel connected to the road. I was cross shopping RX 350s and just found them to be way too floaty.
    The Premium Audio is great. Wish the ML audio that Europe got would have come to the USA.
    It’s a good daily driver next to my 2005 Subaru WRX STI. My only real gripe is cargo space is lacking even with the seats down, but most of the other hatches available are either ugly af (Honda Fit or a Prius) or getting a reliable one can be luck of the draw (Imprezas, Golfs, Focus).
    I think it’ll hold its value pretty well and may swing up in desirability since the model is discontinued. They make for great looking cars. Extreme reliability, less expensive batteries being made every year (even though the stock battery should last a good 10-15 years), great styling, and even a good sized modding community behind it (albeit mostly cosmetic - TRD even came out with some parts and an exhaust system you can bolt on!).

    So - there is a reason these cars run for 300,000 miles - the NiMH batteries are recyclable - so by the time you get the running cost of a regular car, that dies somewhere around 130-150,000 miles and has to be replaced - REALLY? A problem??? come on - all taxis in NYC are Prius's - for a reason. Next stop is full electric. this thing is a dream.I've owned 50 vehicles, from rare Alfa's to whatever, - performance IS NOT just about speed. The handling on this car is superb, and I've NEVER bottomed out on the brakes - and I drive hard. It is solid at 100 mph as it is at 30 mph. I live on Maui on a twisty windy road and it is a blast to drive - as good as anything I have ever owned. This guy is a downer with his way of perceiving this car. Try one - and enjoy. PS - I drive AT SPEED - 80 to 90 plus every day with this car. I own a 2012 with 158,000 miles on it and going strong.And JUST replaced the brakes.

    On the infotainment - I've just test driven a CT200h Executive Edition and it looks like they've updated the infotainment system since this review was made. The little 'mouse' that navigates around the display is now a fixed wheel like most German cars, and the display and menus themselves seem to be updated. I must say I like it, I currently have a 2014 Mini which uses a version of the iDrive system from BMW which is frankly brilliant, and to be fair the Lexus system I tested didn't feel too far behind that.
    Overall I really liked the car, I think I'm going to put an order in.

    I'm thinking of buying a 2011 or 2012 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid with 66k miles on it for $9500 from a dealer. I'm looking for a luxury car with good mpg for daily commute to work but most importantly reliable and I didn't find any option other than 2010 Lexus HS250 or 2011 CT 200h (ugly). under 10k budget. The problem with Lexus is there are both more than 110k miles on it and I don't want to buy a Hybrid vehicle with high miles where the battery is closer to shutting off.
    What is your opinion?

    BTW,
    I believe when Toyota/Lexus names a car that has a gasoline only and a gasoline/electric version (this car is sold in Europe as gasoline only in some markets I believe) the model name comes from the performance the engine the hybrid version produces. This engine performs nearly as well as a 2 liter gas only. Either that, or they just round up to next number? As in LS460 becomes LS500h.

    Is it true that mining and refining nickel is worse for the environment than lithium? I haven't heard that anywhere else... The anti-electric and anti-hybrid people always complain about the impacts of lithium mining.

    with the Lexus CT - Have you guys ever experienced a clogged EGR pipe or problems with brakes locking? I'm looking to purchase a 2016, however, I'm reading forums of people complaining about these issues and now I'm not sure if I should purchase a CT. Any advice is helpful :)

    • @steelerchuma4192

      The egr should be the least of your worries. The real thing is that they blow their head gasket like crazy, just like their Prius sibling.

    • @Adam-oo7tn
      @Adam-oo7tn Před 3 lety +1

      Steeler Chuma this is not true. the EGR causes the blown head gasket because if it is not cleaned every 100k then it will clog, and this will lead to higher engine temperatures and cause the HG to blow. So the clogged EGR causes the head gasket issue.

    • @Adam-oo7tn
      @Adam-oo7tn Před 3 lety +4

      i have a 2012 CT right now, and am at 110k, and just about to replace the entire EGR circuit (pipe, manifold, valve, and cooler).
      so far, it has not given me problems, but i am looking to clean every 100k to prevent my head gasket from blowing.
      this is essential because if the system gets blocked the engine will run hot and perhaps throw a rod (very rare).
      My advice would be to get a 2014+ CT, as the rings and pistons were redesigned.
      this doesn’t full solve the problem though, because there are still a handful of 2014-2017 owners who have already blown head gaskets as well.
      the key to this car is EGR maintenance, and oil changed every 5k. if you do that and clean/replace the EGR circuit every 100k, this car will LAST FOREVER.
      you must maintain it though. every car has its downsides.
      so far, i love this vehicle. It is my first Lexus and probably will not be my last.

      The IS and GS weren't designed with the 2.0 liter 8AR turbo in mind either, but shoehorned in during their mid-cycle refresh replacing the thirsty & under-powered 2.5 liter 4GR V6.
      My guess is the CT was meant to be an experiment at targeting Audi A3 & Mercedes CLA buyers. Obviously with the market shifting towards small SUVs (sigh), Lexus already decided the CT replacement would be closer to a shrunken NX than another compact hatchback. Considering the engineering cost to put the 8AR into the CT, Lexus just decided to not even bother and use that money to develop the upcoming successor based on the Toyota C-HR.

    This still looks interesting even in 2019. My only doubt with it would be that it's too slow for overtaking. I live in a country with very few highways so overtaking trucks or vans is on the menu everywhere you go basically. I really don't want to relive my youth and trying to overtake a 40T truck with 90hp... I drive mostly in the city buy I really want to not worry about that every time I have to leave the city.

    "Why 200?" - from what I've seen, Lexus uses the engine displacement in the model name - EXCEPT in the hybrids. For those, it appears they use the "equivalent displacement" for the hp. So a 1.8l with a hybrid motor might be called a 200, just like their RX400h had a 3.3l (?) engine.
