excellent explanation of the whole situation, thank you very much! i was wondering how did it start in the first place / what led to it, but now i understand it very well. Were they gold mining in the area too? can you please, explain - are the people / territories of colombia, venezuella and ecuador really this different, so that they could not have stayed as 1 country? They could have been so much stronger if they stayed as 1 country. Thank you

The break-up of Gran Colombia was political: Simon Bolivar wanted a strong centralized government with him as president with dictatorial powers but many revolutionary leaders, esp. in Venezuela, wanted a decentralized, regional, or a federalist form of government with less central control, as during the colonial period when all local jurisdictions of the viceroyalties and functioned as nearly independent states.
Gran Colombia was only one part Bolivar's grand vision of a single country that included all of the former Spanish territories in central and south America. But in reality, this was impossible to achieve since all jurisdictions were already operating independently and even had virtually no communication or contact with each other during the colonial period. In retrospect, a unified country as envisioned by Bolivar seemed to make sense only when the revolutionaries were fighting Spain, but when the revolutionary leaders achieved independence, they soon realized that they wanted to the status quo as in the colonial period, when they would rule over their jurisdictions
