Dan you were not exaggerating, this movie is spectacular. Damn near had a spiritual awakening in some scenes. I got to see it again.
Calm down
According to insider Jeff Sneider, DUNE: MESSIAH has already been greenlit by Legendary/Warner; it's happening. Denis gets to finish his trilogy.
I am hoping for all 6 of the Dune books to become movies!
Except its not a trilogy. Dune Messiah would take, at least, two films as well. Then you have Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune or
you have no franchise.
@@minximayhemdune messiah is a 250 page book. It can absolutely be one movie.
Don't do that. Don't give me hope.
@@minximayhem thoso1973 talked about Denis Trilogy and it that case he is right. Denis said he wants to do Dune: Messiah next, but none of the others afterwards because he did not like them. So when he gets to do Messiah, it will conclude his trilogy.
Me, starting the video: Please be good, please be good, please be good
I think DUNE is aiming to end with a trilogy. Hopefully that’s the case. Let it be compact and succinct, with no room to fail.
Me, reading this comment: Please be right, please be right, please be right.
Without watching the review, it's a good sign if the embargo ends early
Yep, now that Dan has assuaged any concerns, I don’t want to see anything to do with this until I see the movie
It’s fantastic
Few years ago during the promotion of "Arrival", Denis Villeneuve said that "Dune" is his dream in adapting novels but he would've had a hard time getting the rights so he didn't think he would've succeed it in getting it. Now that he did and fulfilling his dream made me so proud of him! 🙌
I'm disappointed they didn't go with RedLetterMedia's title:
Dune 2: More Dune
Dune 2: Dune Duner
Dune 3: The Dunest
2 dune 2 duneous
The Fast and the Fremen: Arrakis Drift.
I'm still disappointed we didn't get Thor 4: More Thor.
Love those guys lol
I lost my shit at the thought of a poster saying “2UNE” in like 2003 😂😭
With the papyrus font to boot
@@apoplexiamusicit’s the only way
Me: I couldn’t possibly be more excited for this movie.
Dan: Hold my worm juice.

Just wanna add, Denis is not just one of the greatest “sci-fi” directors working but imo he is one of the if not the greatest working director of his generation. From Incendies to now the Dune franchise, he’s been unstoppable and we can’t forget his entire filmography.
Polytechnique onwards all of his movies have been complete bangers
Agreed. Sicario was not sci-fi but also a great film.
that's a stretch. he found his way into mainstream without losing much of his shagrin and style, his fondness to a certain tonality of a film, but I wouldn't go so far as to lick his ass and call him one of the greatest sci-fi directors. Unless, you watch mainstream movies, then, yeah, he is better than Shaun Levi, Michael Bay.
Same
So name better 😂

*Hans Zimmer Latin choir girl singing intensifies*
is it me or is that voice sometimes a bit jarring, like the most alien world with strange noises and these bedouin-esque ppl and u have the whitest chick ever wailing some random words.
The fact that this can stand the test of time (movie) doesn'treally surprise me. After all, the books have held up for 60 years.
What is surprising is that they haven't massively "modernized" it. The movie still has the central character as male and it's definitely not been feminized in character. I don't think it's a coincidence that all sci Fi movies that retain a male centeric theme do extremely well, Sci Fi is enjoyed mostly by men, and women too are attracted by dominant male characters.
@@reekinronald6776 What an odd comment to make
@@_jolie_it's only odd if you have no idea what he's talking about. He's absolutely correct. It's just conclusions drawn from understanding of basic market research about which demographics prefer certain genres of stories, something the kndustry has been actively ignoring or fighting against for a while now as though the dominant demographics of particular genres and franchises within them are a problem to be solved for some reason.
Well, 84 and Syfy's dune certainly didn't stand the test of time lol
not all the books held up
Well in French this movie is Deuxne.
I hope we get Dune Messiah and from what Denis said it sounds like we are
He wants to make Messiah very much and he is vocal about it. Hope they will do it.
I remember Denis said he wanted to do something else after this. Let him. I don't want anyone else handling Dune at this point. I can wait.
@@BankMoviegoer Well, there's no rush. Dune Messiah opens 12 years after the end of the first book, after all.
@@BankMoviegoerHe is working on an adaptation of another well-loved Sci-fi classic book, Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C Clarke hope it comes off.
@@BankMoviegoer He is working on yet another massive Sci Fi classic, Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C Clarke, on just about everyone's list of top 5 Sci Fi books that have never been filmed.
Adding to the activity of Chani's character makes sense for reasons other than box office---it is a limitation of the novel that almost all of the reader's perspective is through Paul. When Herbert suddenly speed-runs through the war he took so long to carefully set up, it really FEELS like it's being rushed.
Yeah, but if Dune gets political, it's going to suck.
- a comment someone who clearly doesn't understand Dune actually left on another channel's review
Also expansion of Chani's character in part 2 is preparation work for part 3 also. Will not spoil, but romance now realy helps with part 3 later.
@@pofruin part 3? Denis combined parts 2 and 3 of book one into this movie. So if you’re referring to Dune Messiah as “part 3” that doesn’t make any sense
@@jimhoover7345 Yes I meant Messiah. Denis is vocal about his goals to go up to Dune Messiah.
Spoiler warning.
Building on Romance with Chani now is prep work over him agonising not to go through Golden Path if it meant Channi dieng. It is a dense book and alot of new polts and characters and even factions come up. So it's better place to establish their romantic connection here and just rely on it as it goes further.
@@pofruin Dune Messiah doesn’t really go fully into the romance of Paul and Chani. Not sure why you think that. Yes there are elements of their love and Pauls visions of Chani’s death and the birth of a child. Because Paul doesn’t see both children being born in his visions. Most of Dune Messiah is about Paul and Hayt (aka Duncan Idaho). Paul still doesn’t fully understand the golden path. That’s made clear in Children of Dune by Leto II.
Also don’t assume people have not read the books 👍
Me: I couldn’t possibly be more excited for this movie.
Dan: Hold my Dune popcorn bucket!
I don't think you're going to want anyone else to be holding it...
Having watched Dan's critiques for years, I must say this is the first time he ever reminded me (in the best way) of Roger Ebert. Normally so professional and aloof, always with a quick wit, we rarely see Dan go all fanboy. And it reminds me of when Ebert, so cool and professional, would get super excited about a movie and show his unrestrained dorkitude.
I’m definitely gonna see this in IMAX!
Dolby Cinema is also excellent and worth considering.
Good thing that a mall near my house recently opened an IMAX theater so that should be exciting
Me too, probably at the local AMC. With popcorn. You know, cuz I'm a fan of the books and... want a souvenir.
Yeah, that's why. 😶
I'm going to see it on Max app
@@DR.DisInfectAbout that…
I trust Denis as a director and creator but I'm still so relieved to hear Dune Part 2 was good for you Dan. It's been my most anticipated movie since Dune Part 1 came out and I cannot wait to see it.
The issue with getting more is that the books just get far and far more incredibly weird. The mass audience appeal is far lesser the further it goes along in the story
Got back on track with Heretics and Chapterhouse
One more movie would be the point of diminishing returns.
They could just skip some and go straight to Chapterhouse Dune.😊
I’ve yet to read Dune: Messiah, but from what I’ve seen fans of the books say that if the film series gets through that second book it more or less completes the Paul saga and would be a worthy end of a trilogy.
The other novels apparently take place decades/centuries after the events of those first two books and are very much their own stories.
Not exactly, Children Of Dune is set around 15 years after Dune Messiah so not to far into the future and does contain familiar faces but it does setup the next 2 book saga of dune. Messiah can def be 1 movie but children of dune would likely need to be 2 movies. After children of dune then there is a huge time jump of centuries.
Book 3, Children of Dune is about the choices Paul’s children must make. Spoiler: Paul is still alive
Children of Dune could be a pretty cool continuation. The story is very interesting. You would need two incredibly gifted child actors for it to work, though.
God Emperor is waaay to weird for mainstream cinema.
@@theomnitorium7476 Children of Dune is my favorite book of the story. I very much hope they go there although I know Denis wants to stop at Messiah. Not sure how I’d feel about someone other than Denis continuing past Book 2. Hopefully Denis will eventually change his mind and do Children. That book would probably need two films though.
You can always see if you can find the sequel mini-series SyFy did awhile back.
Just don't watch it with your sister. 😯

Bene Gesserit: "Just like we planned it."
I’m curious as to how much The Spacing Guild will be in this movie. None of The Great Houses, not even The Emperor can travel without through space without their permission.
In the book we only saw two agents, not even Stairsmen at the end. Spacing Guild has alergy to drama so would not expect them to show up much in dramatic movie :).
@@pofruin im well aware of what happens in the book.
For all the 1984 movie's faults, Lynch's take on the Guild Navigator was memorable to say the least.
well to answer your question, I don't think they're even mentioned
@@L3monsta they are at the end of book one
i'm disappointed to hear the story isn't as strong. visuals tend to get less impressive over time. LOTR has stayed strong because of its story.
We have tickets for an early access screening at our local IMAX on Sunday Feb 25th. I can't wait for this weekend!
I envy you!!!!
Definitely one of those movies you absolutely NEED to see in IMAX.
I envy you. No IMAX in my country anymore.. people didn’t seem to appreciate it at the time. Pity….
@@awhr0350 I feel you. There’s no IMAX in my country, either. They were supposedly to open one, but it never happened.
I wanted to get tickets for that but all the good seats had sold out by the time I realized they were out. Fortunately I’ve got tickets for me and some friends for next weekend
I’m pretty sure part 3 is all but confirmed, he’s already nearly finished the script though I’ve seen some reports that Denis is considering taking a pause before filming it. He definitely talked about seeing as a trilogy from essentially the start and barring an unexpected flop (esp with the glowing reviews I’ve seen so far) I don’t see any real chance he doesn’t get to finish.
He will take a break for Dune Messiah, he said that in an interview I think
A break would be a good idea. The book is set 12 years after the first one. Even if they make that shorter, some time needs to progress in order for the story to makes sense, so some actors simply have to age a bit before filimg Messiah.
Hopefully he will be doing Rendezvous with Rama before part 3.
3:53 absolutely they have to do the extended edition treatment, at least by the time Villeneuve's trilogy is wrapped and out on digital/physical. Completely deserves it.
The first time I am truly excited to go to the theater (in a long long time)
Litterally the only movie of 2024 I will watch in the theater this year. There are other movies I am looking forward to, but this it the only one I feel is worth the money, and worthy of the big screen.
I am actually thinking about getting tickets in pre-sales... Which to me, nowadays.. seems like a crazy thing to do! But.. isn't it great to feel excited again about experiencing true cinema?
You weren't excited to go to Oppenheimer, Everything Everywhere, or Top Gun at least?
@@marcochen9117 TBH the entire slate of films last year were "I'll catch them while on streaming". Top Gun, too much nostalgia bait for my taste, Oppenheimer better as a mini series than a 3hr biopic and EEAAO took me by surprise, hardly had any screens at my local cinema. Wish I saw Sisu at teather though, but still had a blast with my Home Teather setting
Yes! Can't wait for this. Seeing it with my Dad. He doesn't care that much for going to the theater but loved the first film so much he's going with me opening weekend. Thank you for your super positive review Dan!
With your dad? You're not going to an AMC theater are you? DON'T GET THE POPCORN! 😱
@@solvseus No & no
The biggest thing left unfinished with this film is the resolution to the repeated line "My path leads to the desert", an ending only truly realized in Dune Messiah. Also the return of Jason Momoa... hehehe
As much as I am excited for Dune Part 2. I learned a few months back Denis Villeneuve is working on developing a screen adaptation of Rendezvous with Rama. I'm beside myself with excrement. Here I am beside myself, giving me a high five.
✋Yep really hoping for Rama, has huge potential.
Goddamn it Dan, I was already having a hard time waiting for this movie, now with this review I CAN'T WAIT ANYMORE.
I’ve never clicked a link so fast
I still think a major gripe I have with the two movies now is that the action scenes get cut short SO BAD. Its an epic sci fi movie without great and grand action scenes. It sets it up extremely well, but it ends just like that and things escalate with zero resistance
That was the point. Raban was an ineffectual puppy. You expect him to be a big bad villain, but he's just a scared weakling unceremoniously put down. There was never any threat to the motivated Fremen. You fall in love with Paul / his cause, but by the end you can see where he is headed. He has power and has choice and he chooses to massacre. The audience cheered, but they're supposed to be sad. Chani is like the audience.
In the books they give a good martyr / machiavellian justification for the jihad (stagnation, death of the species, million year torture, etc). In the movies all you have is "kill billions for revenge and power".
I second that. Villeneuve is really good at directing these scenes but I felt the same way about them being cut short. Especially the showdown felt a bit disappointing.
Amazing job reviewing a movie like this without giving any thing away. I don't think enough reviewers realize just how much their fans appreciate this. Even just insinuating stuff can make you go into a movie with expectations. Love the channel and can't wait to see this in theaters. I saw the first one during Covid in a theater completely by myself. Alot of movies can benefit from a crowd but it was great watching it by myself(even if depressing as a movie fan). I hope to make this the first non documentary that I ever see in imax.
Was that you predicting the future Dan?
[Checks Dan's eyes for blue]
Flying from Ireland to see it in BFI IMAX London, there was less than a dozen of us watching the first one during covid times. I did the same for Oppenheimer, hopefully IMAX is growing from the quality of thse releases
Back in 2021, I was fortunate enough to see "Dune" very early, since it came out months before the US release in Europe.
Many, many years after Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies it was the first film I'd call a true epic. It's vast, grand, larger-than-life movie making that glues you to your seat and overwhelms your senses with a visual and accoustic experience that's so rare, it stays with you for years to come. It was fantastic.
Now hearing your praise makes me even more excited to see Dune II next week! I'm sure this will be the first very big hit of the year.
There are more books, so Villeneuve doesn’t have to make stuff up for a third/fourth movie. And I really hope he is able to make them and use the technology now available (and future) to continue the amazing work!!
I think they made the correct choice not doing a time jump because theres no way to do Alia without making it cheesey or creep or both once shes born until shes older.
Denis Villeneuve's Rendezvous With Rama is going to be 🤯
Got my IMAX tickets booked for next Friday. Can't wait!
Christopher Nolan likened it to The Empire Strikes Back. That’s the only endorsement I need. I’m going in with lower expectations though, bc I was pretty meh on Part 1. It was incredibly well done. But I just didn’t find the narrative compelling
I was also lukewarm on Part I, mostly due to lack of "good" soundtrack. Hans Zimmer score was too sterile/clinical/ ambiental. Lack of a traditional orchestral score left me emotionally unattached to the movie. However, I saw it again last night and I got into it big time, with the emotional scenes hitting much harder this time around . It helps having read the novels, or at least the first 100pages so you know what's going on. Can't wait for part 2!!
@@bigdreams5554 A good film shouldn’t require you to read the novel it’s based on to understand what’s happening. I’m glad you like it. But those type comments always bother me.
I also don’t think people should complain when a movie departs from a book, or read things into a movie bc the book adds “more context.” These things exist as separate entities
@@bigdreams5554 For me, the soundtrack was one of the best things about Dune
That Nolan comment got me too. Don't buy it. Lower expectations from empire.
If they make Messiah, they need to make Children of Dune. Leto II is bananas.
Na, I think they should stop with Paul's story. It gets too crazy with Leto.

amazing seeing more reviews! Keep up the great work!
Great review Dan. My enthusiasm levels are already at maximum capacity for Dune Part 2. Let the spice flow!!
I am so ridiculously excited to see this movie in IMAX. I loved the first one so much and I have a lot of faith in the team that made it that the 2nd would also be wonderful, so I’m glad to hear such a glowing review!
Movies are so expensive but I'm excited to see it on MAX app eventually I just watched Dune part 1 last weekend it was pretty good
Absolutely appreciate a critic like Dan. Being able to not just scream that the movie is a perfect masterpiece and actual have a nuanced and well thought out opinion.
Seeing how people react to Messiah is going to be something.
I wish better things happened for Paul poor him
Already have my IMAX opening day tickets !! Can't wait!!!
Dune: Messiah...the script is already mostly written by Denis Villanueva himself!! However, he's gonna do a smaller film first before returning to Arrakis.
I'm so excited to see this next week!
I loved the easter egg to David Lynch's Blue Velvet: Ants crawling around an ear. Thank you Denis 🎉
I was already hyped as Dune is one of my favorite books and I loved the first movie but damn, Dan has made me even more hyped to see this. Glad is excellent although I never doubted it.
Denis Villeneuve has still not missed, I haven't seen all his filmography but I've seen most (I think I'm only missing Incendies and Polytechnic), the man simply does not miss. The moment a Dune adaptation was announced to be directed by Villeneuve I had full confidence in it, the man is just a genius, flawless filmography
Agree with you 💯 that you can see where the money was spent, its baffling sometimes seing so many great stars and budgets being wasted by poor executive management
watched it last night can't wait to watch it again in imax 70mm need too see it in that full imax 1.43
Early 2000s, try 2015. Remember Fan4stic, anyone?
This movie sounds really good. Considering the increasingly abysmal state of blockbuster filmmaking for nearly the last 5-8 years, I almost don't want to trust it, but the first Dune was great, so I'm eagerly anticipating what's next.
You might need to do a bit of research, though, because Dune part 3, what will be an adaptation of Dune Messiah, was confirmed after the positive reception of the first trailer or two for Dune part 2. I guess the news kinda flew under the radar for some reason, perhaps due to the strikes, but I think even Deadline confirmed the rumors late last summer. That preproduction was obviously delayed due to the strikes, but it is happening. It doesn't appear to be Villenueve's next film, however, but he is returning to finish his story after a break doing whatever he does next.
Gonna do my best Fred Flintstone leaving work impression when I go see this flick. Just saw Part One for the third time in theater last week and walked away somehow more impressed than the first time. As Dan put it "this is cinema!"
Hey Dan! Just caught Dune 2 at a fan screening and wow, I'm hyped for your spoiler review. As a Canadian, I believe Devince Villeneuve deserves the Order of Canada. Oppenheimer dodged a bullet with this film not releasing in November as planned. Dune 2 deserves all the awards next year. Fantastic work, eagerly awaiting your spoiler review
All the book lovers (of which I am one) should take note that Brian Herbert tied his name to the project as an executive producer.
I did not recognize Javier Bardem as Stilgar. That's amazing.
Arachis is the botanical name for the peanut. It makes the whole of Dune rather comedic for me. Battle for the valuable peanut.
An extended cut would be amazing, I need to see Paul charge with the fundamentalists
2ne will now be in heart always!
Dune Messiah is the sequel to Dune. It completes the cycle about fearing the "chose one" and how even the best of intentions can lead to trouble. Dune Messiah is more of a Book 3 of the Books 1& 2 of the first Dune book.
I cannot agree more, thank you for the review!
I really hope part 3 happens 🙏
So excited to see 2NE first showing on Friday
I'm seeing this the whole month of March.
I’m sure I’ll be seeing this more than once! Can’t wait!
Already have advanced tickets back to back in IMAX on March 1st!
It needs to be at least an hour longer, I would welcome a 5 hour version. The Giedi Prime scenes were a highlight for me.
That shot with gurney from the trailers at night with the explosions is so badass. I cant wait.
Yeah I have a feeling the movie will change Rabban death from being shot in the back by Stilgar and then beheaded by the Fremen. To Rabban and Gurney fighting it out.
My local cinema is showing Dune then Dune part2 as a double feature on the VMAX screen the day before it opens in Australia. I have my ticket!
I like seeing you like this in a review video Dan
Just came out of this movie. It really did something visually that my brain is still processing. What a film
The first one was released in theaters. In fact I saw it in imax then
So did I. It got a release, but was also released day and date on streaming. That’s what I meant by being given the release it should be.
If you think The Last of Fans were upset with Part 2, just wait to see how fans of the first two Dune movies will react to Dune Messiah - if Villeneuve ever films it.
Imagine seeing Children and God Emperor .
Watching this tomorrow!
I absolutely loved it! Just got out of my screening so definitely need to sit with it. But loved the new cast and the cinematography was breathtaking!

Dan rules.
I believe that is the laser disc
Can't wait to see it on Sunday!
Definitely going to see this one, glad to hear it was done well.
Can’t wait to see this on IMAX.
We really need longer cuts of these movies, so much context and worldbuilding was lost when Warner seemingly told Villeneuve to keep the runtime below 165 minutes.
Everything I’ve heard him say in interviews, etc, leads me to believe that Denis Villeneuve is very in control of what’s cut and what’s not. He speaks of wanting his films to have a rhythm and perhaps even cutting too much. Unless there’s a studio mandate that has gone unmentioned.
The next Dune movie (Dune: Messiah) will absolutely change the tone of the first 2 movies if it ends up getting made. It was my favorite dune book by far because I was so infatuated by Paul after the first book. Cant wait
Denis brings so much heart to sci-fi. Here for it
He actually understands science fiction as a unique storytelling mode and not just cool gadgets and lasers 😅
It's weird how I appreciated the craft but was not moved by it.
I already commented on a similiar comment before. You are not alone feeling like this.
Look forward to his Rendezvous With Rama film

Got my tickets for Thursday and Friday of next week. I'm ready!
Got my IMAX ticket for next Sunday's fan fest sneak peek and thrilled that it's so good, especially the stuff with Austin Butler. That's been my biggest question mark, and it sounds like it's really an exclamation mark.
Glad I watched this, you're a trust worthy reviewer. I'm gonna check this out in theaters, saw Part One just this past month and liked it a lot.
Can't wait to watch next week 😃
You say book fans may bristle. I nearly walked out of the film as the entire message and nuance of the book was gutted in an insulting way.
can't wait, seeing it as soon as I can!
Hey Dan, I'm enjoying the new(ish) rating system. It seems sometimes the arrow falls in a different location within one of the brackets, like low, medium, and high. Is that random or does a higher arrow indicate that you liked the movie slightly more than a lower arrow within the same bracket?
D.V. has done it again with this film that is (mostly) pure image and sound. It really is peak cinema.
Since the end of Part 1 I had been hoping that they would stick the landing on this.
