DUNE: PART TWO Movie Review (NO Spoilers!) | Timothée Chalamet | Zendaya | Denis Villeneuve

- DUNE 2 is a stunning cinematic achievement, and we have a spoiler-free review. Christy and Alonso were both blown away by Denis Villeneuve's film and liked it even better than the first "Dune" from 2021. The script from Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, based on the Frank Herbert novel, finds Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) searching for purpose after the fall of his royal house and stepping into his prophesied role as messiah. Co-starring Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh and Léa Seydoux.
We'll do a LIVE spoiler talk sometime after the film opens in theaters on March 1, so keep an eye out for that. Do you plan on seeing DUNE 2? Let us know in the comments!

The first Dune was such a joy for me. It looked and sounded amazing. I loved the whole ride and all the characters. PLUS it was the first movie that I went back to a theater for since when covid began, so I was a little extra excited! I've got two tickets for Dune 2 on Saturday and Sunday opening weekend, just in case I get the urge to see it again and can't wait! lol
Exactly the same for me. Went to one outdoor cinema for The Greatest Showman a few weeks before in Dubai, but first time in the UK during COVID. I loved it and can't wait for the second.. Villeneuve is a quality director.
Great, Larry, have a blast!
@@BreakfastAllDay, the first movie showed the promise of how well it could be made, but the story wasn't really worth it. The 1984 shows the whole thing and was made too weird to take some characters as real people. The 2021 Dune shows him becoming a Muslim, but not his rise to leader status.
The writer Edgar Rice Burroughs influenced much with "A Princess of Mars." I have this weird feeling that "Dune 2" will break into the top 100 movies on my favorites list.
I love "Star Wars" since a child. I hated "Dune" in 1984 with Sting. I love Sting as an musician. "Dune" in 2021 is good and I really liked it, but somehow the Anti-Christ (Mahdi) making it to Jerusalem is unlikely to surpass "Star Wars." It might be interesting in a SCI-FI film to see Islam's vision of peace, and so I am glad that "Dune" will have a part two, but I'm not holding my breath that it will make the top 100 favorite movies.
As a child when I read the book I felt it pulled from Lawrence of Arabia and Islamic culture of the Caucasus or Bedouin tribes of Arabia, but I never got the idea of Atreides being America with capitalism waning. The movie in 2021 helped me see that connection. The Fremen call Paul the Mahdi is a dead give away that this whole thing is an Islamic end times vision. Hence the dead bodies that Paul sees piling up as he fulfills his place in history, by leaving America and being a Muslim as that is how the movie ends.
Here is where these three related series have fallen so far and any you don't see aren't loved enough to mention.
20) Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back (1980)
21) Star Wars: a New Hope (1977)
112) John Carter (2012)
148) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
269) Dune (2021)
To quote the author "I am showing you the superhero syndrome and your own participation in it." - Frank Herbert, speaking about "Dune."
"A Princess of Mars," from 1912, inspired things like: Star Wars, Avatar, Indiana Jones, Superman, and Dune. "A Princess of Mars" even inspired Ray Douglas Bradbury. If you want to see a movie of it, see "John Carter" from 2012.
But the main reason for me to watch Dune 2 is to see whether Zendaya Coleman surpasses female actresses I loved in the past. Another in the top 100 and she will surpass all female actresses at least for having three movies in the top 100. The most have six movies on the list and two doing better than her top two.
10) Spiderman: No Way Home (2021)
96) The Greatest Showman (2017)
190) Spiderman: Far from Home (2019)
197) Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
269) Dune (2021)
@@chrisc2439, "Dune: part 2" is worth seeing. Denis Villeneuve stayed true to the book enough, in the sense characters can see it all happening as good or bad or good and bad and yet you as the viewer or reader can make up your own mind too. In other words, do you see this hero as worth it or not worth it. It's up to you.
I was surprised Denis Villeneuve in "Dune: part 1" had the Fremen call Paul the Mahdi, as that was a dead give away that this whole thing is an Islamic end times vision. Frank Herbert did not come out and say it, but while I read "Dune" as a kid I knew the whole things smelled of T. E. Lawrence of Arabia joining the Muslims in World War One to be a leader figure of the desert only this was more Anti-Christ type vision of the future.
I think in that sense it stays true to what Frank Herbert said, "I am showing you the superhero syndrome and your own participation in it." - Frank Herbert, speaking about "Dune."
Now I see it from Zendaya's perspective; hence, I love the ending as completely open ended as to whether they achieve or don't achieve, but that many are for it as the dye is cast and some are disbelievers of it seeing the conflict is not over nor is any success guaranteed. In that sense it was brilliant, but it didn't crack my top 100 favorites movies list.
"A Princess of Mars" by writer Edgar Rice Burroughs inspired many things along with the movie adaptation of the book called "John Carter" in 2012 by Disney, such as: Star Wars, Avatar, Indiana Jones, Superman, Dune, and writer Ray Douglas Bradbury with "The Martian Chronicles," which I also read as a child.
Here is where such things fall on my favorite movies list:
20) Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back (1980)
21) Star Wars: a New Hope (1977)
41) Superman II (1980)
112) John Carter (2012)
121) Avatar (2009)
125) Man of Steel (2013)
148) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983)
164) Dune: part 2 (2024)
270) Dune: part 1 (2021)
The main reason for me to watch Dune 2 is to see whether Zendaya Coleman surpasses female actresses I loved in the past, which I don't believe she has yet. And to see if the vision of the Mahdi in his ascension can be depicted well. Denis Villeneuve delivered. I suppose movie three will be can Islam rule well? I doubt it in reality, or for depiction in the next movie, and I doubt the 3rd movie would surpass the 2nd.
Zendaya is in my top 13 favorite actors based on the list below. She is certainly doing well for her career and I'm happy for her in that sense.
10) Spiderman: No Way Home (2021)
96) The Greatest Showman (2017)
164) Dune: part 2 (2024)
191) Spiderman: Far from Home (2019)
198) Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
270) Dune: part 1 (2021)
Shocking how early those review embargos lift when the studio is confident.
This.
What @Flashbagfolly and @@orka16605said.
Regarding characters being largely functional, that’s true about the book too honestly! I’m reading through now, and while the characters do have some more depth they are mostly cold and calculated beings focused on the main conflict. So this is just Franks style, for better or worse
I heard Zendaya say in an interview that she was happy the director allowed her to show at least some of the road towards Chani absolutely accepting Paul because in the book it was "a snap".
I agree. Controversial opinion to say this but I thought the language of the book is gobbledygook
The Dune fans already know how it ends. We just want to see it on the screen. Make that IMAX screen.
Exactly.
Dune is written with philosophy in mind and not characters, which will turn some people off...matter of fact old scifi was mostly not about characters instead explored ideas
An excellent point. For instance, in both versions of "The Thing" the ideas are far more important than than the actual characters. I think the 82 version works better because of the actors and that they leaned into the paranoia much more.
Sci-fi without computers, robots, and aliens.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
― Frank Herbert, Dune
Thank God for Dune 2. It will gives us the much needed enchanting science fiction escapism that Star Wars and Star Trek no longer are able to produce.
Star Wars never had the kind of gravitas Dune has achieved
I already rewatched the first part last Thursday. First time at a Regal theater for ... I can't remember how many years.
You are ready!
I read these books at around 21 years old, probably the perfect age 'cause I was totally blown away, absorbed, in love, and was out of my skin excited for every adaptation made of them, which I devoured over and over and over again!! My skin literally sizzled with Denis's Part One... no question one of the greatest theatre experiences of my life!! I gasped when you mentioned it looks like there will certainly be a third too!! 6 more days!!!!!!! We'll be able to go see the preview Tuesday night here!!🥰🥰
Guys, there was a Dune mini series in 2000, they also did Children of Dune.
Sand does act like water in certain cases. This part is absolutely well researched and legit.
And cool-looking!
Hearing the commentary and knowing where the story goes is VERY interesting 👀👀👀
I saw 2001 A Space Odyssey at a Cinerama theatre when I was eight yo.
And THX 1138 when I was 11.
There hadn't been anything nearly as good as those two movies until I saw Dune part 1, on a good home screen.
Now at 63 yo I have a ticket to see Dune part 2 at the Boeing IMAX theatre in Seattle.
I am soooo ready for this!
I loved the contrast with how this was shot to something like the Avatar movies. The shots were beautifully composed in a Lawrence of Arabia like style in ways you rarely see nowadays
I really enjoyed the first film and of course the David Lynch version as well.
This is a massive story and Denis is the right Director for the job.
Excited to see part 2 in a few weeks.
Great review
Let us know what you think!
The real discussion should be... how freaky some people would get for that popcorn Dune bucket 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amazing to think that it is going to be a trilogy! I'm excited that you are both hyped for this film!
Not hyped. Hype is almost like an addiction to people who need that next fix. Looking forward to more but keeping it sensible. People needing "the hype" is getting to be a real problem. You don't need to run into things shouting about hype, how excited you are, can't wait, all that. It's not good for people to need that rush they get acting in that way.
I think they complete the book in this movie as I understand it. My aunt will not be happy if they don't she is a fan of the David Lynch Dune and when she went to see part one which she didn't realize was a part one, she was pissed and told everyone she talked to for two weeks how they pissed her off.
@@TheycallmeMrWonka Unless this is some form of sarcasm or something that I'm missing, I think you might be overthinking/overreacting a bit my dude lol. Not sure how saying hyped is "like an addiction" or how its "getting to be a real problem". Its just a word people sometimes use instead of excited lo
Will there be a reprise of Khaleesi & Khal Drogo?
Wow, strong endorsement from both of you. Can't wait to see it!
oh. Ma. GAH. (And I'm not even THAT big of a HerbertHead, but still....). So stoked. Thanks as always, Christy and Alonso.❤❤
Have fun, David!
I'm seeing this in IMAX on Sunday and then again in a week with Villeneuve and Lil Timmy Tim in attendance. The hype is real!
Oh wow, have fun!
Christy, great minds think alike! When I first saw it, I liked it but thought I might’ve liked part 1 better. Thinking about it more has only led for my opinion to shift positively and I can say I like part 2 better.
Unfortunately, it didn’t help that my IMAX presentation in 70mm had some dirty screen effect/vertical lines and a huge dot on the screen 😢. Looking forward to seeing it in Dolby soon.
Was this the regal Irvine? I noticed a dot too lol, but thought the experience overall was unreal!
@@camchangfilms Nah, it was in the New England area. Agree that it was unreal. Saw it again this time in Dolby on Friday and loved it.
Good review! Thanks
Here for it!!!
I love this grounded review! Hopefully it'll be good! I have a free ticket so I'm excited to see this in 4dx!
Hope you enjoy it!
Took my wife and her parents to the Fan First IMAX screening tonight. We all thought it was awesome!
Oh wow, that must have been intense in IMAX!
@@BreakfastAllDay it was and the dialogue was mixed quite well in comparison to the action too
Possible Spoiler:
The critique of religion and politics, particularly of charismatic leaders is the main point of the novel. It should not be a spoiler that Dune 3, based on Dune Messiah makes it clear that Paul is NOT a hero. Charismatic leaders should be avoided, not sought out.
I revisited Part 1 a few days ago and found that I didnt enjoy it as much as i did originally (which i didnt ever see in theaters) but part 2 is on steroids. the battle scenes & CGI are insane. its the ultimate theater experience and im so glad i saw it in IMAX
Dances With Worms
Ironically a better description of the entire Dune series subplot than any I’ve seen. Lol
~ "When religion and politics ride in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way.." -- Frank Herbert
Apparently, the B & W section with Feyd-Rautha was shot using infra-red filters which made the contrast so markedly stark and polar opposite to the film's colour cinematography.
Can't wait to watch this week. I would've called it "Dune, Where's My Sandworm?"
Love you guys
Got my tix to see at Chinese theater imax, can’t wait
I don't share Alonso's view. Science fiction is about imagining other universes. Characters are secondary.
Can't wait!
I can't wait! I'm watching it on Sunday! ❤ 🥳
Woo hoo! Have a blast.
The dune adaptation so far is interesting because while I really like it I can see more why when Jackson did all the major changes he did with Lord of the Rings why with adaptations with weighty source material you have to both combine and altering characterisation and events make for a more emotional film
I know everyone will be talking about Dune 2 for the next few weeks, but as one of the few CZcams channels that reviews smaller and obscure movies, I hope you can catch “Scrambled “ for counter programming. The window might have closed or closing, but I caught it on the only theater showing this in my city. It was funny movie about an early 30 single woman’s journey to freezing her eggs because her clock is ticking. As a guy, it was funny and educational similar to a movie a few years back when the theaters opened back up, “Together Together”. Smart writing and funny movies. Hope you can catch it and promote it.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I'm genuinely baffled. What does he mean by "these are characters that exist only in the way they function in the plot and don't really have anything going on"? Are there movies where characters exist in a way that doesn't benefit the plot of a film? I'm genuinely mystified by critics sometimes.
Do you guys have a playlist of movies you reviewed that you gave a 9 or 10?
We don't, but our top 10 videos every year are a good start!
If you haven't read the novel, you wouldn't understand the relationship between Beast Rabban and Feyd Rautha and the Baron's attitude towards them both. Hence, the Baron gives control over Arrakis to Rabban because....reasons.
12:41 you should’ve said the Dune Sandworm!
The first one is very good with setting up the world and some drama and action. I heard this is mostly action? Not sure if action or character progression is better. We will see…
I have to say the visuals by Frasier are why I'm going again. I just need it to be a disaster 😂
Clicked with both hands!
hmmm....I always wondered how the dissident collective voices in comment sections sound like. Thanks Alonzo for 2:48
Alonso's critique is valid. Dune has never done anything for me on film for the same reason the books didn't: Herbert isn't that interested in characterization. At least 40 years ago, we had Sting screaming in a metal Speedo.
Austin Butler is terrifying here!
40 years and one month. I went to see the Lynch version with a bunch of my former high school friends on opening day (we'd been out a whole 7 months), Jan. 1, 1984. Man, the ride back in the car was...interesting.
That's interesting because one of the reasons why I love the books it's because everything is told from the perspective of the characters, which I find fascinating.
@@Hessianoct Point-of-view is a story-telling technique; it doesn't necessarily breathe life into them or make them interesting.
@@teddykgb9971 So what. Character arches are overrated. Good science fiction books and movies focus on building new universes rather than characters.
I like the 2nd part of the first book (this film) more in the book and 84 film. Felt like I liked the first movie more due to the cosmic exposition. The pacing of this one felt spastic
Grizzled desert Rat, you say? Aladin / Avatar?
I love this movie and how it spoke about religion. The hand to hand combat was amazing. Austin butler is great in the movie
I watched the movie last night and I am still overwhelmed. My viewing of the first movie was similar to Alonso's. I saw it on TV due to the pandemic, watched the re-release on XD, and Part Two in IMAX.
The movie is breathtaking.
It is a very elaborate game of chess and the characters are a bit cold. As a resident in a red state, the intertwining of politics and religion is almost like the local news around here. People are just collateral damage in the realm of power.
My only complaint is I wanted more of Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. Austin Butler's character was SO creepy, I wouldn't have minded the whole movie being about him. It was like he was a distant cousin of Pinhead from the Hellraiser movies. If they only hadn't killed Jason Momoa in the first movie so we could have seen a fight scene with him and Austin Butler, but that's just me. 🥰
You might like Dune Messiah then
This movie is why I love going to the movies😱😱😱😱
Great Review!!
PS: What a beautiful woman!
I would’ve liked both parts to be a little more cerebral!
In terms of sci fi, besides the technology I didn’t see much that was unique to the genre; this seemed to be a story that could’ve just taken place in modern times. It was interesting more from a religious allegory point of view. I have a lot of issues with both films but still thoroughly enjoyed them.
Maybe I'll make this and Wonka a double feature, LOL.
Timmy contains multitudes!
I cannot believe some people are giving this movie a rotten rating. Can you see why they maybe did that or are they just trying to be contrarians?
I'm not sleeping until 15 March. LOL.
My friend, it’s out next Thursday!
@@mateo6482 Not in Europe. We need to wait a bit longer.
@@angelcena759 ahhh man I’m sorry, well soon enough you shall meet the Maker
I really don’t get these movies. It’s weird because I love Denis Villanueve and I’m into sci-fi but I could not stay awake during one of these movies. They are huge and beautiful and serious but I just found myself nodding off during Dune I. I’m looking forward to seeing DIINE but I just fear that Im going to snoring again. I’m also not all that enchanted by Timmee. I don’t know man.
The first one was a bit tedious to me too, this one is nearly 3 hours long, but it's plot heavier apparently.
Is this worth watching for someone who doesn't like lore-heavy sci-fi, preferring stuff like 2001 or close encounters that's more exploratory? I didn't watch the first one because I'm not really a fan of the books.
I mean if you didn’t watch the first one then there’s little point in watching part 2
No. If you don’t like lore heavy sci-fi and didn’t like the book you’d probably hate the films
This movie is the definition of lore heavy, in your shoes I’d avoid at all costs
Yeah, avoid this and Lord of the Rings. Stick to stuff like Conan the Barbarian and Star Wars.
I watched the first one and didn't enjoy it. I'm in complete agreement with you though. The moment something starts leaning into deep lore I get tired. Science fiction should be about the ideas!
Having felt so much with Part 1 and you saying it lacked depth compared to Part 2, it makes me think Part 2 will completely drain me!
Dune, as a series, is super weird. Some people call it one of the greatest stories of all time. I found it quite interesting, had its ups and downs narrative, had some truly mind blowing concepts. But its not very focused and I'm not sure it has its messaging and themes quite under control. By the end of the fourth book, the series has ultimately done the exact opposite of what Frank Herbert stated he intended to do - warn ppl about powerful, charismatic leaders but then the ultimate space fascist worm dude ends up saving humanity.
He wasn't able to finish the series. Then his son Brian picked up and from what I can tell he just milks the lore and has no clue what his dad was trying to accomplish with the series. Reading the wikipedia on his final book almost made me puke.
I'd hate to say its one of the most overrated science fiction properties that has ever existed, but even though I'm happy I dove into it and got alot out of it, it kinda SUCKS.
In my mind, Dune ends with Messiah and the rest is a crazy fever dream
the ultimate space fascist worm saved humanity though by forcing humanity to never be comfortable with a singular leader ever again
Question for Alonso, is Christy as delightful as she seems?
Go see it for real on March 1st, then tell us what you really think.
I love you two
How were you able to see this film?
They did a few screening for critics so they can hype the movie...
@@Zjonaaa amazing how many random CZcamsrs had early access to this film

We thought so! But the first one is pretty amazing, too.

Great cast, great director, great cinematography, yet here I sit with almost no desire to see it, If and when the whole story is done, and they all are well made then........maybe....lol
What happened to Matt Atchity? Hhhhmmmmm 😊
I liked the first one better tbh
Watched first one again and still not the most engaging. Beautiful and intriguing but not a classic.
Sorry Lynch Rules meats.
It’s was a great movie glad I saw it in imax, 8/10 for me but I don’t love it and don’t feel anything except the Javier bardem fangirling and when Austin butler was on screen, he was def the best part. Some really boring stuff here lol
Didn't like Part 1, don't plan on seeing Part 2, just came here to listen to you both review. You folks are SO entertaining :)

Mais oui!
"Played by Elvis"😂😂🙏
This movie better finish the first book because they really pissed my aunt off with the first one. She is a massive fan of David Lynch's Dune and it is on her vary short list of movies she will re-watch. She cursed them out for almost two weeks after we left the theater when the first part ended.
Well ... there's definitely a part three coming.
This film must be great, I don't accept anything else from it!
I love to be spoiled, in every way.

Just walked out. How much $$$ did Anya Taylor Joy get for her cameo? 😅😮
You say no spoiler review then proceed to give a complete overview of the whole opening story. wtf.
Hi, thanks so much for watching our review. Have you seen the film yet to determine what may or may not be a spoiler?
This is not the middle chapter
Oh there is definitely going to be a Dune 3.
Dune part 1 & Dune part 2 is one story, 1 book. Then there's Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune@@BreakfastAllDay
I am not on the Dune train, as Alonso put it, but I must say I’m VERY intrigued !!! I think I wasn’t interested because of a couple of factors…like science fiction isn’t a favorite genre and I didn’t like the first Dune from years ago. I didn’t read the book either but I do love a ‘good vs. evil’ story so I might give this a shot, if this is that ????✨
Sand is overrated
It's coarse and rough!
It's just tiny, little rocks
I beg to differ. Considering most folks don’t know that our entire society is literally built on sand. Key ingredient in concrete, asphalt and glass. Just sayin ☺️

I think there was too much time between Part One and Part Two. I know this movie was delayed by the Actor's Strike and the first one was delayed by COVID, but there's still 2 years between them and I completely there was a Dune movie, other than the one from 1984.
Elvis looks like John Malkovich.

It’s ok, y’all can spoil. Anyone who is seeing this movie without having read the book or seeing Lynch’s is just uncultured and deserves to be spoiled.
