- In this oral history Lydia Lunch discusses being saved by literature at a young age, running away from home to New York at 14, and inventing a new way of making art. Lunch talks about her creative process, performing in bands Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8 Eyed Spy, Beirut Slump, and Retrovirus, how she connects with other artists, and her inspiration for spoken word poetry. She talks about what art is and why it is important to her and others to create. The interview concludes with her thoughts on spirituality, relationships, and activism.
Lydia Lunch is a musician, poet, artist, author, and self described historian-journalist. She is best known for founding the seminal No Wave band Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, her spoken word poetry and prolific discography. She continues to perform spoken word and in her band Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus. A documentary about her life, So Real It Hurts, was released in 2021.

I agree. Any interview with Lydia is a preview of the wonderful mind she possesses. This type of intelligence is quickly drying off…Punk has gone as far as it can go; the Avant Garde has gone as far as it (seemingly) can; electronic music seems to have hit a wall; Rap/Hip-Hop has reached a wall, too (as evinced by the dawn of “mumble-rap,” now on it’s way out). Art needs a shot in the arm and a boot in the ass at this point, if we are ever to go somewhere NEW and INTERESTING 🤔

I used to live in Geneseo (upstate NY) about 1 hour's drive from Rochester. I phoned that Crazy Eddies House of crazy people and their guitar store that Ms. Lunch mentioned. They did the "ah ha ha ha" joke on the phone as I sat there confused (I was 14 and confused about crazy jokes on merchandise store phones thinking someone was tripping..I had no idea). how funny that you mention this store and those adds. I phoned in 1978. Yes, I was there too.

She's always been confronting people's preconceived beliefs about her last work taking them hostage and forcing them to admit, much like a prisoner with Stockholm syndrome, that they actually haven't figured out who or what she is. That they aren't on the same page. It's true about punk. How can you be rebellious by conforming to something that has a template? It's not to say people weren't using something and making it their own. Once someone is packaging something and selling it to you, are you really a rebel or a conformist consumer? I first laid eyes on her in a photography magazine in 75 or 76. In the article that was about photographer and the show it stated that she stole the portrait from the exhibit. It didn't mention that she was fronting any band. So that image, coupled with a criminal act made me take notice of her. She had stained my memory. You had the Runaways in Creem Magazine in which a man was marketing as being outlaws, playing an already established form of music. Then you had a real runaway being an outlaw then making music ( which by definition is just organized sounds) that had no established structure. It's not to say that I bought and got her from day one. When you saw the Runaways imploding and sort of restructuring and making another album that was a watered down version of their last, even with more musical abilities, it became less of something. It weakened. When you compare that with an authentic outlaw, who is a few steps ahead of it's mark, using what's at their disposal to get away with something to just survive. You only want them to get away with it. It's what a good criminal does. Not what the law expects them to do or repeat. That's how I have experienced her performances. I came in with a kindred sense of understanding like somehow I had it figured out. Each time it's like the classic ghetto stand off. You know me? You don't know me? How could you know me ? I don't know you and why would I? You're nothing to me but an opportunity. I'm not interested in you, only your money. I have to say, I respect that and like the outlaw on the run, you're checking the news to see if they got popped, or did they come in disguised and boost and bounce? You fall in love with your captors. Expect the unexpected. You're just a tool. Seduced, manipulated, hustled, sometimes harmed or killed. They're onto something else and somewhere else and your significance holds no meaning until there's possibly a conviction for a crime or a public trial. That is just a rather small piece of the 70's and Lydia Lunch. I read that Kim Gordon described her as predatory. Yeah, I thought. Nobody held a gun to your head and suggested otherwise did they? It's amusing to think what I just described happened to her. She had a preconceived idea that she wasn't a tool but a contemporary who understood and was on the same page. Don't assume anything. Keep your friends close and your criminal acquaintances in the same room as your valuables or your shit might go missing. Boom. Roasted.
See this is what the artist who flicks a booger at a canvas depends on. You can do all the mental gymnastics you like, it will not dress the emperor.

Not too many people can handle drugs, I learned after some years too, I never exaggerated too much anyway, because it had to come out of my own pocket, I'm not rich, but people only see the worst of addiction because of the media showing the heaviest users who live their lives constantly chasing dope. But I know many users who can handle it, doing their jobs, having their families, and get old with it. And most people don't know they're using, cause many people get really nuts when they do get to know it. So most of them keep quiet about it, it's not anybody's business anyway..😎
I loved Teenage Jesus back in the day. That was my introduction to No Wave and all that. The discussion of music and creativity at about 44:00 or so is gold. It's really true that people don't get her at first and just see her as being pointlessly confrontational or whatever. It's like if you're not angry, what she's doing isn't going to be intelligible to you or speak to you. That bit towards the end where she explains that she's bullying the bullies I think is the part that people don't get. If you look at the hellscape of a world around us, ask yourself what other response to it is appropriate if not anger. Shouldn't it be confronted?
She's a great artist, imo. People like her are sorely lacking in today's art and music world.

Lydia Lunch is a great exercise in human nature and how utterly mystifying it can be, cause she's got me stumped! On another note, something about her face reminds me of my darling Victoria Wood (British comedian and musician who died in 2016). R.I.P. Victoria. You are truly one of my biggest influences and role-models!

She's spun up to the sun. I'm freaking out for her, you and the past. The mania, which was unexpected, had it's clutches in the red of the realo meter and, the possibilites of ever considering anything that could possibly be done with a quickness was masterful on her part. Oh I'm feeling the 80's criminally insane/ misunderstood, underpaid, unpaid artist. I'm freaking on her downtown, east village attitude and she looks like she's made peace with probably every socially unacceptable thing inside the brochure, who is holding, where to find. Where to go to be undetected afterwards. Whip up an entire spread on the fly, her dime, the shopping, the clean up, the booze, food allergies, menu planning, and 7 shows a week at Caesar's. You do the math. I was thinking about being young, striking out into something. Working to support myself four weeks after my fourteen birthday. I had spent the past few months in a psychiatric hospital. Not willingly, and how much that wasn't therapeutic to a thirteen year old. From that I would never trust my parents again in that child like hero worship some have with their parents. I didn't ever. Out of self preservation I did what I did. Bounce Beyonce's alter ego, Sasha Fierce before they all know that your underage. The mainstream narrative had all sorts of teen slut exploitation plot lines. Cherie Curry, Jodi Foster, Brooke Shields, Linda Blair at the same age as myself, had pretty much had that unsavory reputation that you couldn't buy in jr. High school. Here's another layer of evidence in a dense sauce that you ordered on the side. She was elusive. You'd be tripping on the 8 eyed spy. And she can piss on that record but I loved it. She was doing press for an outfit called Devil Dogs in a basement in Alston Massachusetts. I totally get her vibing and weaving on this bitch and they barely sit down. Girl asks her, " do you try to create a mood on stage when you perform?" Now mind you everyone is bugging on Queen of Siam and this one isn't doing that, just buried 8eyedspy, teenage jesus, beruit slump, and this was something in reverse because she hadn't documented a recording and now were playing shows. So she gave the best interviews I've ever read and heard. Words are important. The radio was as good of a performance and for free, and never disappointed. Her response was essentially, what? I have to go there. Go onstage. Sing songs. Remember words. You want a mood? I felt her then and I do now. She's my homie from the mothership that is related to my cousin's babyperson, or brother of my foster father's daughter in law from the next county and I agree. It's a crazy business but I guess that's a good fit because the worst person to be responsible for.

A very inspiring, passionate, creative, rare soul with great intellect! I'd love to see more women like her, individualistic, bright, open, etc. I'm a woman (holland) who never meets too much women of my own kind, most of them got the same make over and talk the same bullshit, so I have male friends, always had since my mid-teen years. But many are dead, and I have to reinvent myself again. And listening to Lydia and other inspiring people, writers, music, art, and my own inspi/aspirations, ideas, creativity, etc. is a great place to start from! (2024, ommezwaai) 💛

It is hard for postmodernists to talk because words have only subjective meaning to them and are not connected to reality. First one in the series i had to stop after about 15 min. The non stop talking and patting herself on her own backside was starting to get to me. This, to me, did not sound like an interview but some chick rambling on about what she has done and what she thinks of other people.
