  • This is a 2001 Rolex Datejust 36mm in steel that features a salmon pink sunray dial with roman numerals.
    The watch is 20 years old and has never been polished. It came to the store in relatively good condition considering the age of the timepiece, however a polish is due to bring the watch up to retail standard.
    We sent the watch to our refinishing workshop where the watch case and bracelet is professionally refinished by an experienced craftsman. The process involves a full watch case disassembly including removal of the movement. The watch case and bracelet components are polished and refinished before being placed into an ultrasonic cleaning machine. After numerous rounds of steam cleaning and drying, the watch parts are then carefully reassembled ready for pressure testing.

    content like this makes me more comfortable with the idea of buying a second hand Rolex at a cheaper price than buying a brand new unworn one even if it came with papers. obviously over time its going to have wear and tear so it will never look as it did brand new. however if i can have it restored to as close to its original condition as possible then ill be more than satisfied. thanks!

    • @Watchtrader
      @Watchtrader  Před 2 lety +1

      Polishing is option however we recommend that you do it as infrequently as possible. Good polishers remove a very small amount of metal in an effort to maintain the original case shape the best they can. As you can see, the watch comes back looking great!

    Being a watchmaker and polisher myself having worked at rolex I can say he did do a good job there are some things he could do that would make the job faster and have the same results but as long the result at the end is the same who really cares as a customer how you got there as long as it looks the same

    Such a great watch 😅 chills me right out. Beautiful time piece, what a great job, looks amazing! Did not expect the pressure test to be 9.8 bar, basically the full 100m. With an old watch. I’ve seen some videos where they hardly test it at all, maybe 20m or so. Good stuff! 👍 I’d love to see someone test a new submariner to 600m or to destruction, see how deep it can actually go.

    Great Video and very time consuming and skilled.
    Personally, I like 3M 9 and 7 wheels for rough linishing prior to polishing wheel (mopping). Using a shaped stone is good but will never beat Trizac to take off deep scratches on contoured services like lugs. Not a watch maker but make medical Implants in 316LVM with 20 years of experience. Would love to try electro-polishing a bracelet and finish with ceramic beads for a light satin finish.
    That being said, great job and the desired result.

    Great video and have come to really appreciate watch polishing and am thinking about trying my hand at it. Two things, there must be a better way at tackling the fluted bezel. I’ve seen so many aging bezels with smooth edging from polishing in the manner found in this video. Not saying it’s wrong because obviously you’re the expert and it’s just an observation on my end so I hope you are not offended by my comment. Finally, I had my Explorer sent off to get the movement serviced by Rolex and when it came back there was dust inside the dial area. I feel as though those clay tools that pick up small debris wasn’t used in my service otherwise I wouldn’t have had debris on my dial. Hopefully you never encounter a customer like me because I go crazy over dust especially if it wasn’t there to begin with. Cheers and continue your great videos!

    • @Watchtrader
      @Watchtrader  Před 3 lety

      Hi Marvin, good spot. You can only really be careful to minimise the smoothing of the edges when lightly polishing the fluted bezel. It is also possible to use a specialist tool to re-cut the bezel and bring it back to its original finish too.
