    Thank's Mr Snooze i enjoyed watching this lovely piece of nostalgia from my childhood . They built things to last in those days .

      Hello David, no doubt that things were made to last back then, the quality of the internal parts is amazing. 70 years on and still running, will probably still be going in another 70. Best regards to you

    This must have been amazing to see in 1950 and it still looks excellent today. It's a far cry from a plunger Princess but I suppose that would have been reflected in the price at the time. Everything is robustly engineered to last more than a lifetime, I love it. Thanks for showing it.

      Hello Pauline, definitely this was in a different price zone to the Tri-ang. Still both designs have stood the test of time well. No doubt that the Tri-ang is a bit quieter. All the best to you

      @@MrSnooze All those metal wheels on metal track are certainly noticeable (being polite). Agree about both designs still standing up. Cheers

    What wonderful things these old Dublo trains are.
    Out of curiosity I bought a small 3 rail set with an N2 and a rake of tinplate goods wagons some time ago. I Gave it all a quick clean and service and away it went.
    I had such fun just playing with a toy train instead of trying to achieve a model railway with DCC and all the gizmos.
    That Ive started selling off all my modern locos and rolling stock.
    And am slowly replacing it with old hornby 3 rail.
    As you say much of this is over 70 years old and can be bought back to running condition very simply.
    I have found these big Duchesses really dont like the standard curves much, but romp around faultlessly on the larger radius.
    Also a modern Morley controller does wonders for smoother running.
    I always had my doubts about buying vintage trains, but Im completely hooked now. I love them.
    All the best from Perth Australia.

      It's great to hear you are getting enjoyment from these vintage items. As good as modern digital items are it's sometimes hard to beat just playing with a train set on a table. All the best to you

    Wow . A piece of history . I think it’s the first time I’ve seen one run using the original transformer and controller . These coaches were surprisingly good for their time too .

    Very nice to see another Duchess of Atholl running, the noise of Hornby Dublo is what attracted me to it in the first place. I think my Dad bought his (probably ex-set) Duchess of Atholl secondhand in about 1952, he used to do all kinds of odd jobs to save up enough money. I had to spend lots of time fettling the track on my layout, and occasionally still have the odd derailment - mainly if the locomotive is running too fast - it can be very hit and miss at times. The 15" radius curves (supplied in the set) are still quite tight, so closing up and straightening the bent fishplates, checking each piece of track to see if it is true will help. I know some people that put thin pieces of cardboard under the outside edge of the track to increase the cant - I've tried this myself in the past and it has worked for me. Would love to see how fast the locomotive will go using your new speed detection kit - but you'd probably need more track and slow the train on the curves. As for your version of the locomotive with the casting lug still present, I think normally these were removed when the body was ejected from the die - I'm sure their purpose was to hold things in place up until that point - why some weren't taken out is not clear - only this model was affected as far as I am aware.

      Hello David, thanks for watching, that's some very interesting ideas about track maintenance. I did spend a bit of time after the video checking and adjusting each piece and the difference is apparent. Such nice stuff this Hornby Dublo kit. All the best to you

    Superb set. I very much enjoyed watching it run around your oval. The transformer and controller were such throw backs to another time, wonderful to see. I have a Duchess in my collection. It is the only piece of 3 rail loco stock that I have. I had always thought that it was faded and in poor visual condition but it seems that most of them were a dull matt finish so it isn't too bad. I did service mine a few years ago and run it on the test bench, it ran fine.
    Best regards, David.

      Hello David, the matt crimson has always looked a little bland to me but I think it was just how they were. The gloss models look a little brighter. Thanks for watching, all the best to you

    Yes!!
    I really have to find a Dublo Duchess of Atholl in LMS red. It’ll probably have to be 2-rail converted, like my Montrose which I had done in the late 70’s. What would be really nice would be to find a way of insulating the wheels from each other and then find a way to set up a switchable 3 or 2 rail system.I wonder if anyone has done such a thing. Such a gorgeous locomotive, I’m a big fan of Hornby Dublo and Wrenn.
    Maybe you need to put together a 3-rail layout… just a thought 😉
    Édit:
    Just looked on eBay for the first time in months. Prices have gone crazy!! And postage to France is scandalously expensive. Bloody Brexit 🤬🤬

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Robin, I think the switchable 2 to 3 rail system might be a challenge. I would probably look out for a fairly decent Wrenn chassis and fit the Atholl body for 2 rail running. All the best to you

    Great collection. Love seeing these vintage items running on a layout as they were intended. Just starting over again after 40 years so my old stuff has long since gone. What is the story behind your collection? Is it one you have acquired since childhood? Anyway thanks for the great channel and look forward to seeing what other treasures you have.

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Steve, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. The collection contains family inherited items, items from my own childhood and a lot of items that I picked up from Antique and General auctions held in Northampton Cattle Market during the 1980's and 1990's. Are you starting with vintage items or are you building a layout using new modern equipment? Best regards to you

    • @stevem879
      @stevem879 Před 2 lety

      @@MrSnooze Thanks for the reply. I am using mainly new items and DCC now, but some vintage stuff is creeping in. The theme of the layout will still be a classic train set. It will be populated with older Hornby buildings and accessories. Possible a seperate loop or two of Super 4 to run some older stock as well. All the best.

    As I said before I had the same set as that in the fifties. I also had the same transformer. I must have had the wiring different to yours because I moved the controller to the left rather than the right to make it go forward.

    • @MrSnooze
      @MrSnooze  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Martin, I had the wires to the track the wrong way round. Reversing them has changed my controller to how you had yours. All the best to you
