    Hi, I am an retired exile living in TX. I recently found my son's Triang train set that I got him some 50 years ago and am resurrecting? it. My stock of Super 4 points is VERY limited (ebay) and operation is hit or miss. Your video intrigued me as some of my points have the same affliction as the one's you scrapped. I used to be pretty good at soldering, I was in electronics, and wondered if anyone had ever tried to solder a wire from the short rails to the copper strips underneath. This would bypass the bad contact. Thoughts anyone?

  • @maltnz
    @maltnz Před 9 dny

    My worn out brush arms have a square hole in the end if I remove the old solder. I have recently made carbon brushes like yours but slightly thicker front to back. I ground away the back edge to form a square of carbon that matched the size of the hole horizontally but would stick out vertically at the rear of the arm. I used a small amount of Super Glue on the inside of the arm to stick the brush in place (carefully avoiding the edges of the square that goes through the brush). When the glue dried I then ran solder around the rear of the brush arm to make contact with the vertical square to provide electrical contact. Working OK at present but do not know what sort of life expectancy the repaired brushes will have.

      Hi I did the same as well. Although the motor is only doing 1-2 rotations then coming to a halt. It makes sounds that it’s still trying to rotate. Any idea what this could be? Things to note would be: -made sure current was going through each pole by testing the resistance of the wire. -Made sure resistance of each pole was the same and also each pole has exactly the same amount of turns -Tested the commutator to make sure it was functioning correctly with a multimeter -Tested the two initial test points for shorts -Tested brushed for shorts Unwound wire and rewound new wire Coated armature with multiple layers to ensure no shorts would occur If you have any insights it would be appreciated greatly. Thank you!

    Thank you! Most interesting, and it brought back many memories. I got this train set for Christmas 1959, when it was brand new on the market, as your brochure indicates. The coaches in my set were "blood and custard" rather than maroon. Also, the coaches and tender had metal couplings - not the plastic shown here. The only other differences I can see are that in 1959 there was no suppressor fitted to the power supply rail, and Hornby did not at that time supply the small spanner required to gain access to the loco motor. I had the Marshall 2 PSU which had 2 outputs - 12 v DC, and 15 v AC for points and signals. Eventually, I had a layout with various points and sidings, another 0-6-2 loco (BR no 69550), and more rolling stock including a breakdown crane and the Travelling Post Office. All this on a weyroc base board 6' x 4' which my mum (the techie expert in my family!) got from the local joiner. I remember I had great problems in getting the TPO to work. Instructions said to use the 15v AC output from the PSU, but that didn't work. Problem eventually solved by using an Ever Ready 9v grid bias battery (does anyone here remember them?) from the local radio shop.

      @MrSnooze Před 18 dny

      Thanks for looking. That sounds like an earlier set. Much better with the meatal couplings. The solenoids can sometimes play up in the Mail coach. I wonder if you had a dodgy one. Funny it worked ok on that battery. Take care, all the best to you

    • @johnarmstrong7709
      @johnarmstrong7709 Před 18 dny

      @@MrSnooze Thanks for your reply. I don't think it was dodgy. I think it was the addition of 15 v AC to the DC voltage running through the rails. Very strange, anyway.

    Snooze. No falling asleep on the roof. Cannot remember ever seeing a bogie pickup on a classic period Triang/hornby steamer??????? I believe the Budd car was investigated for trailing bogie pickup. For many of us classical Triang/TH represented an unkept promise, though in my operating environment assessment is more complicated. You have worked wonders. I wonder how your system would go without the plating? Another problem was lack of traction on non-maghes models. On a gradient the loading was not much. A situation I am still looking into is the red and silver diesel/Alco road switcher. Both had the same pressed steel frame mounting the same power truck and trailer, and both skidded under reasonable load. The Blue and Gold R159 VR B class had the same bogies but plastic chassis which doubled as the shell. It easily outpulled the metal one. Adding weight did nothing for the metal framed models; can't remember clearly on the 159, but think it did improve things. Expectation would be that the gain on traction would out-benefit the drag on the trailer which would be mollified by the rolling bearings. It is not as if we were cold turkey dragging the thing. The dock shunter with the same power bogie (to use a Biblical idiom borrowed by Iain Rice in a not dissimilar context) 'is a wolf in sheep's clothing'. HIs context was an 0-4-0 which would outpull ANYTHING on the layout. Maghes was a great innovation. There was at least one other motor released by Rovex: a 2/3 or thereabouts miniature X-04 lookalike. I knew it as a slot car motor. The X0-4 was also used on many slotcars. I don't know if it is true, but I heard STC mentioned in relation to the astounding quality of components. Interesting. Guy Williams used X0-4 motors for Pendon. Take a break mate; you've enough problems falling off roofs without keeping up with us. Guess where an awful lot of the Spinal Unit patients in hospitals 'come' from. Best to you and Mrs. Snooze.

I've managed to find a few examples of the black versions (R359), the oldest having the gold crest, as in your brochure, later ones having a BR transfer. There were some produced without any printing, or buffer beam red, or whistle - must have saved Triang many pence! My one’s magnet end bearing had got about 2mm of play in it. Sounded like a bag of gravel. The other end bearing was very very loose and I couldn’t fit the original bearing. I tried to fit the ball race bearings but put too much force on the outside and now they run rough. They are the same ones that you used in the X337 bogie where one ran rough. It is because the outer shaft got pushed as well. I’ll try again one day, but I need to drill out the old ball bearing on the worm end. It’s stuck in and stopping me fitting a new bearing. Yours run beautifully and as they were built to! Beautiful condition. They have such charm. Glad to see the Railway in action again. Would hate to see the end of it! @@MrSnooze you can use the longer X.04 brush as I found out by trial and error on Caledonian Single. You'd have to trim the length down before the body would fit though. Hope this helps. 👍

    Lord of the Isles model has certainly been well used over the years as you say only a couple of years ago for the last release. I picked up one a few years ago at a train fair, I spotted it sat loose in a plastic bag for just £20 so had to pick it up. It has been modified a bit with chain link couplings and all the plastic wheel replace with finer metal ones as well as a slightly closer tender connection. Still works quite well but I have added more pickups to the tender and put a Kadee coupling on to connect with my rolling stock that’s all been converted. I have also picked out a lot more painted detail so it looks quite smart.

      It sounds like you have done a nice job on your item. Maybe extra tender pickups would be a good way to go. Best regards to you

    like yourself I like the trains I have and I don't run prototypical trains , the only thing I do like is reliability, some of the trains I have are like yours up to 60 years old and still run with care and maintenance. I also have some newer trains and rolling stock out of which the newer stock has more problems with couplings motors and valve gear than any of the older stock .The detail nowadays is fantastic but only if it stays in place .I'm lucky ,I have a small vacuum that has a clear pickup box and it amazes me that every time I vacuum the track there is always at least 1 small part that seems to have dropped off or come un stuck Thank you for sharing and informative way of going through your ideas and repairs . My only problem is that I started a short time ago watching your first videos now half way through its like a good book just cant stop watching 😂😂 but soon will have court up and can then relax ..john

    I use gel hand sanitizer which contains alcohol. Works a treat. The oil is just machine oil. Use sewing machine oil if want. They might say not recommend of Course they would say not to use Theirs a fiver for 5 ml or a pound for 100 ml or there about.

    The marks on the tender are from the bubble wrap. Some bubble wrap is ok to wrap models in, but the cheaper, low quality stuff id bad news. Personally, I avoid using bubble wrap for any models, not worth the risk. I've seen some nice stuff ruined by bubble wrap over the years.

    I also prefer old fashioned model trains. I live in Italy so I'm on HO with a collection of old Lima, Jouef, Piko locomotives, with an X04 powered Hornby acHO tank engine representing my link to all things British. I also enjoy maintenance and mechanisms.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this video. My very first train set was a clockwork one as in the catalogue. It was a gift from my great aunt and uncle for my 3rd birthday in 1978. My great uncle was a signalman in the Scottish Borders and a great train enthusiast. He passed away in 1989 and left me all his books on railways and on the airborne troops (he was in the glider troops in WW2, but that's another story). The train set is at my parent's house, I'll have to bring it home.

    Another wonderful video. Your enthusiasm and enjoyment of these fantastic older items really comes through in your commentry. And you use that wonderful word "fun" I feel that some people have forgotten that idea when it comes to model railways. One of the reasons why yourself and Oscar have developed quite a following. All the best. 😊

    That was very enjoyable. The catalogue is excellent and very well presented to pique the interest of any reader. I agree about the long lived models. I don't buy new things but they seem to only be available for 5 minutes and then they disappear. I have heard people complain about 'old tooling' that is only a few years old and how disappointing it is. The Ivatt is a nice little loco. I have one and it is such a smooth and quiet runner just like yours. It fits with my small layout and I must give it a run. Nice to see the big layout is still functioning. I hope all goes well with whatever the future brings. Looking forward to the next video. 😊

    I have always loved the image of the layout with father and son sat in the big comfy 70's brown armchair. It's also the cover photo on the 4th edition track plan book. I did fancy building a copy of it recently, but no room with my current layout in place. Thanks again for a very enjoyable video.

    Hi Mr Snooze. Very enjoyable video. I recently obtained one of these Ivatt 2-6-0 locos from ebay and enjoyed getting it going again. They don't seem to come up for sale very often in Australia. Would like to hear about your collection some time. How you started and what it consists of. I bought my first loco, an 0-6-0 3F second hand in 1957. from my choirmaster, a recent pommy immigrant when I was a cathedral chorister all of eleven years old. Please keep 'em coming!. Regards, Jim.

    I remember being well miffed when I discovered my lovely Super 4 track was no longer being produced, and that all you could but was horrible System 6 😂. That, coupled with tender drive 😱, almost put me off model trains altogether! I stuck with my Super 4 until I was much older and then switched to 100% Peco Streamline. I never knew Hornby produced nickel silver track as early as that.

    • @MrSnooze

      Yes the 70's were definitely a time when many changes were made at Hornby. It's funny but I actually like the tender drive items now. Best regards to you
