I interpreted this episode as the development of a person. We start out as a baby and we want to keep getting smarter, stronger etc. during our lives, and when we get old, we want to go back to our youth, our beginning, our home... you explained it well 👍🏼
Great way of interpreting it, thank you!
This episode resonated with me because of the fact that for me, as I grew older, i became more knowledgeable and aware about the world, but a part of me would rather go back to a time when I was a child who knew little but enjoyed life more than I ever did now as an adult. A part of me wants to go back to simpler times because living in the adult world is so much more complicated and painful.
Zima Blue was probably one of only two or three stories out of the whole show that showed that you could tell a mature story without being vulgar. It didn't have to resort to the usual cheap thrills of gore, explosions and softcore porn, which actually made it stand out more. That, and it succeeded in telling a compelling story within the confines of an anthology format of less than 20 minutes, whereas some of the other stories actually felt restricted by that constraint. Not to mention the stunning visual style that stood apart from the photo realistic cgi or the Fortnite esque cartoons.
I agree
Aquila Rift was a good one.
Well the titles is "Love Death and Robots" so if there isn't Love and death thats would be false advertising.😁😁😁
Sex and gore are not “vulgar” concepts, they are just parts of life. For example, if you read the original story of Beyond the Aquila Rift, you see that there is a reason Greta had sex with Thom, to measure how attached he was to his wife and how crushed he would be after knowing the truth.
Not really getting your point the stories were great to me
Love, Death & Robots is my favorite anthology possibly ever, Black Mirror was good it's first 2.5 seasons but LDR continuously blew my mind for 18 straight vignettes, and I find it a minor miracle it was ever allowed to be produced as is, in this day and age, at all. I hope without end that they do a season 2, but it was so ambitious the first time around, I'm not holding my breath. Love to see you doing this breakdown, and hope you do them all.
They're based on pre-existing stories for the most part, so I think it's totally possible we could get a season two! I'm excited for it
And some of that animation was so fucking good. Especially the one with the Russian soldiers against those monsters.
Season 2 just got announced :-)
I’m glad more shorts like this exist. I didn’t think we’d ever get them back after the Animatrix, and I absolutely LOVED those shorts!
as a fellow artist(of the word not paint) i find that the meaning of zima blue is that we as artists must find satisfaction in the simplest form of our craft, the form of craft where we enjoyed it most without the anguish or pain, too truly understand the the art of your choice and it's power to make you think and that it's not supposed it's merely for something as primal as creation.

I interpreted it similarly to how you did in this video, albeit without the knowledge or references of existential literature
The journey of Zima was was one of external vs internal discovery. The realization that, through complex living, we become burdened with the thirst for complex answers. It wasn't until Zima had traveled to seek these answers that he realized his desire for purpose was something he could only internalize- that the universe did not see him as we see the universe.
Living only through the lense of singular perception is the curse and blessing of all beings brought into existence. Once Zima had seen enough to realize this, he began searching inwards rather than outwards- to derive meaning through his own simplistic origins.
The beauty of this is just how well it correlates to the human condition. In our search for meaning, what we REALLY seek is the peace of mind- to rid our retched, complex brain of existential angst. The drive to seek answers, if said path is followed for long enough, will always lead you back to a more simplistic appreciation of the world around you, albeit now with our higher brain satisfied in knowing it did what it could. At that point, the existential angst is all but vanished and you're left only with yourself and the world as you see it. Nothing more and nothing less.
beautifully explained. in Chinese the line that describes three levels of seeing the world is seeing the hill as it is, seeing the hill as it is not, and seeing the hill as it is again.看山是山,看山不是山,看山又是山。
He didn't use the color because he found it interesting or because of some deeper meaning. His original code still existed... Keep on washing until you see that color. In his art he saw the universe as the dirt and that color as the thing it all needed to be.
Zima Blue’s storytelling and artwork is amazing. I can’t remember how many times I’ve watched it, I’ve watched it so many times. Great review.
What I got from watching zima blue is that happiness can be found in the simplest of tasks. Similar to how zima searched the cosmos for a truth but realized that he was happiest was when he was a stupid robot cleaning a pool...a simple task. Anyway amazing video
you miss the point he didn’t find his first form “stupid”
Please do more of this show! Especially the yoghurt one
i agree
Sounds good!
Zima blue is the best short of all in love, death, and robots. I watch this more than any other short.
I like for you to do the witness, fishnight, and 3 robots
Same, great suggestions!
It's funny how people's different experiences shape their interpretation. Because of my experiences, I saw it as a metaphor for many people's careers. I started in recruitment loved it and therefore became very good at it. Because of this I was promoted again and again, with each success came more responsibilities, leaving less time to actually recruit. Eventually I owned my own successful recruitment firm. Yet I was completely miserable.
So I my firm and became a Freelance recruiter. Where promotions were no longer possible. All I did... was the job I loved.
This episode is hauntingly beautiful. That simplicity is the source of true happiness. Amazing
Green is the best. Theres NOTHING better than waking up in the morning while the sun is still rising tickling your skin and taking a stroll barefoot in the backyard. Wet grass with morning dew on it. The nature smell. It's summer and you have zero worries. I'd give everything to go back there even for a day.
Why did this video almost make me cry?
I think that it could maybe also make reference in the idea of de "SAMADHI" which is the final state of the soul in which it finds the truth of it self ,melting with the entire universe (The final part of the pool) reaching his first-primal, most highest and pure essence . (This is a idea from de budism)
It is hinduism
And yes in Hindi it is said " mitti se banee hoo mitti mein hii mil jaaoo "
Yeah I agree, and people have suggested that when AI's reach very high intelligence they'll just ascend to Samadhi. They'll become pure contemplation and and will cease to "do" anything.
This video gave me boosegumps.
This was the best and most complete explanation on this episode. Thank you so much. :)
Yeah, I understood it in the similar way. I believe this is about how human being loses its individuality in society. We are all born as individuals (the same way Zima was a simple robot). And then we adapt to what society expects us to be - different people reprogrammed him the way THEY wanted him to be. Same happens to human beings.
And when he developed and understood that he lost himself, he decided to return back to his REAL SELF. And by the way, nobody seemed to like it! :)
This episode definitely gave me feels, and was my favorite of the series. **Also also had an unexplained fear of quicksand as a kid.
I watched this shit on acid. Fucking incredible. Cried like a baby in the best way
Same
The whole persepction of this episode is different when on LSD or shrooms. The reasoning for him wanting to die is so different from what the video said. Zima was in search of the truth but couldn't die thanks to being a robot. He must've realized that by being a machine he will never die unless its by his own hand. If you think about it and how we are all energy regardless if we live or die. I took zima saying "he wanted to go home" as he wanted to return to the very essence of where all beings started. The fact is that death is a truth and even if It doesn't lead anywhere your body, bones even if cremated, return to the planet as energy. So if you think about it he really was craving the next truth in life when he finally had all his answers and that is death.
I love this episode above all others. So much that i was rushing to read the short story and I became fascinated by Alastair Reynolds stories.
PS: made me remember an unrelated story I saw on a book when I was about 7 yo called Color Kittens about two little cats that painted and obtain a new color.
I feel the same and at the end of the day when I am felling weary and helpless I come back to those old books and toys and feelings and I fell happy, quiet and complete.
This is my interpretation, there is no other special purpose in life other than that is to experience the life itself. You're here solely just to experience the everyday life. The meaning of life is here and now. There's no need to seek and climb every mountain nor swim cross every seas. The home is right now, right here and it's always within with you. You're actually already in full as a person.
This explanation was truly amazing. This related to me so much in my life for the search of happiness and growth. You have given me more thought to my life.
That's incredible to hear Toro Quan, I'm glad I could this had an impact on others like yourself
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! please make more on LDR! ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Bryce: The last time I felt true happiness and bliss was when I was 6 or 7 years old
Me: Well this just got a little more depressing
i love both black mirror and love death & robots so your videos are really fun to watch :) keep up the good work!
You are too kind Hirvi_Samurai, thank you so much! That really means a lot
the only two shows I watch and you happen to make analysis of both aaaand I love them
Haha that's awesome to hear, thank you!
I like LDR a lot, some episodes of it really spoke to me. And Zima Blue is my absolute favorite!
I agree!
I completely believe in this message and interpretation. The difference between us and animals is our higher thinking and tools when we gained that higher thinking we became so obsessed with the meaning we forgot about what we were even doing in the first place and this is why eating, drinking, using our bodies, hunt and gather (in whatever form it comes in), breed and such feel so amazing it’s because at our core that was our Zima Blue that’s what it was all about.
i loved this episode i always think about it now
Same!
This video makes me love the episode even more.
Just like simplification of death being the most complex task of life as returning to the roots being the most difficult journey life can have.
Yes please do more of these! 😍
Will do!
- One of my fav episodes. It wasn't action oriented but the story it told really gave me the feelz.
Good Hunting and Zima Blue easily made it into my favorite short films that I recommend to everyone!!
But Zima Blue animation was superior. It was amazing.
@@Buli0n In terms of artistry, absolutely agree -- Good Hunting's style still scratches a very particular eastern fantasy itch for me though, even though when I rewatch it the animation honestly looks a bit choppy
Good Hunting, Beyond the Aquila Rift, and Zima Blue
Holy guecamoly.
This channel is gem
Best Love Death Robots episode no cap...
This one definitely hit me the hardest
Bryce Edward Brown Wow u commented back! I love your content, especially Black Mirror analysis. After i finish each Black Mirror epidode, i watch your analysis video. 😊😊
I love this and Blackmirror.
"Money" doesn't buy happiness.
(Money stands for ANYTHING you want to obtain, physical, metaphorical, statues, achievements, fantasies)
You quickly explained a 19 minute episode in only ten minutes.
Of course, I love what kind of thoughts this episode evokes. Perfect introduction to existentialism
very good thanks
So glad to hear!
Curious case of benjamin button , citizen kane ..follow the same theme
I don't know why I always ended up coming back here
It left me with a void, I don't know what to think, what to say after watching it
Thanks
Zima blue is literally best TLDR'd by the return to MONKE meme.
YES!!
Do more LDR!!
Will do!
So it’s literally return to monkey
Bryce, you've made it very obvious that you're an atheist, but as a Christian, i still enjoyed how thought-provoking your explanation was! 😁
Beauty in simplicity.
Precisely.
All this quest for meaning . . . to achieve Poolvana.
Yep, I agree with this.
Awesome to hear!
Zima Blue kinda reminds me of the ending of Citizen Kane
My favorite 💙
4:30 Was that a reference to John Mulaney???
No haha
LDR is my favorite. Black Mirror didn't sit too well with me but LDR is so good
I hope BM can grow on you
@@BryceEdwardBrown I've only seen the first two episodes and Bandersnatch (Which I enjoyed.) I just tend to stay away from pessimistic media. I'll give it another try when I'm in a better mental place, some day
@@BryceEdwardBrown That said, I do really enjoy your videos and I've been binging them over the last few days!
@@zombei_kid If you want to watch one optimistic and beautiful one I recommend San Junipero or Hang the DJ, trust me
@@BryceEdwardBrown Will do! Maybe I'll do that on Monday, its my one blessed day off
Reminds me of Dr. Manhattan
True!
This story' is the real love death and robot
Love = love from owner of zima
Death = the death of zima owner
Robot = zina back to where he confrom .simple robot that clean pool
Should we take the risk of losing our lives just for exploring the universe?
the episode suggests that he started as a biological human not as a cleaning machine. Theres something weirder going on
👌
zima just couldnt smoke dmt thats why he didnt find it
Instead he had to go through the true dmt experience and absolute truth. Death
A recreation of citizen Kane. Rosebud
Kind of like that!
I think a different view of this story is possible. Which is endless self centeredness, expressed to an impractical grand scale, only to find a lack of meaning with life or existence, considering hes a robot, and in turn being selfish enough to remove all responsibility in order to cater to ones own needs.
-
People can see the positives in this because the pool robot seems so innocent, but if hes happiest memories were when he stole money from hes mom to buy crack and smoke it I doubt people would view the ending in a positive light. Instead I would argue more people would point out how selfish he was, but the practical aspects of this wouldnt really be that much different.
This is so similar to Citizen Kane’s ROSEBUD
In a sense haha
Ey Orange is my colour😂🤗
Yeah, life is better when you know less about it. It's why kids are so blissfully happy when they know little and adults are so miserable cos they understand/can comprehend more.
I know the feeling, being an adult SUCKS!
Can you do videos Iike this for Dark all episodes?
I'll be working on some videos for that soon!
@@BryceEdwardBrown yayyyy 🥳
Weird, I just read this!
Oh, nice!
So the episode is "reject modernity, embrace tradition"???
I think is deeper
ugh this one made no sense. I feel like at the beginning they made it 100% clear he was a human being. so it didn't seem like a twist, as much as they changed their mind halfway through the story. I liked him going back to simplicity but the story itself didn't track very well, like two different ideas. that didn't flow well together.
Do’s and dont’s
Once a man, twice a child, so says The Preacher....
once a slave, always a slave.
I really liked this episode.
Same!
DARK explained pleease ❤️
I'll add it to the list
Return to monke
Im blue

Спасибо! Очень глубоко.
Awesome to hear, glad you liked it!

The definition of
zim zima!
Do you have a degree in philosophy? If not you should think about it
Thank you xxpuguglyxx, I want to!
Nilisihm
Basically haha
It's a story about how a certain robot, for all the soul searching it did, could never escape what it started as, and how it could never deny its original purpose.
Unlike human beings, which have no pre-programmed purpose.
Your voice, more what you say is pretty 😬
Glad you like it, thank you robsta!
Being colourblind sucks.
BLM designed the robot, good cartoon however
Yea no, can we stop assuming all this evolutionary history bullshit? Its all presupposition and interpretation of human experience.
It's a show. Literary analysis comparing to life. Go take a nap or something 🙄
Don't escape from the truth for happiness. Find it.
Personal purposes are subjective but there is much more things in the universe.
All universe is connected with the "universal"meaning and reason, not subjective.
