Do the 2004 Live version of this song from his huge concert in Paris. It´s a revelation and much better than the studio version. He takes this song to a different level and it will steal the soul out of your body for real. You will not regret it. I also like your Bill Burr content.

Have to admit I actually was a bit disappointed your reaction was to the studio version and not the Paris live version. It’s so much more intense.
Do not try to figure out what it is in the air. Phil has in an interview said it was a song he wrote when he was in a dark place in his life. Going through a rather brutal divorce.

"In The Air Tonight” sounds haunting because, well, it is slightly haunted. Collins wrote this song after he and his first wife Andrea Bertorelli divorced, and the singer was haunted by the emotions that came rolling in afterward.
“I wrote it after my wife left me,” Collins told Rolling Stone in 2016. “Genesis had done a tour that was far too long. She said to me, ‘We won’t be together if you do the next tour.’ I said, ‘I’m a musician. I have to go away and play. Just hold your breath when I’m over there.’ Then Genesis toured Japan. When I got back, she said she was leaving and taking the kids.”
After this jarring separation, Collins turned to songwriting. “One day I was working on a piece in D-minor, the saddest [key] of all. I just wrote a sequence, and it sounded nice. I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I’m not quite sure what the song is about, but there’s a lot of anger, a lot of despair, and a lot of frustration,” he said.
This song was also heavily featured in the 80s tv show Miami Vice - clips of the song appeared in 104 out 111 episodes... the show is an awesome nostalgic trip if you haven't ever watched it

It is a long time since I saw Risky Business (1983) with Tom Cruise but seem to recall this was played when he was planning to loose his virginity. Somebody who have seen it more recently correct me if I am wrong. "In the air tonight" came be given several meanings it seems.

That crazy drum sound (gated reverb) was made by accident in a recording for Peter Gabriel by Phil Collins. It became a signature of the 80's
Phil Collins has a long solo career , a long career when he was in his band " GENESIS " . Also Peter Gabriel was the orig singer . After Peter Gabriel left , Phil Collins took over as singer & drummer . One of my fav albums when they had Peter Gabriel was " The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway ". That's a double album . And the one without Peter Gabriel is the self titled album that has " Home By The Sea 1&2 " on it. Phil Collins also plays drums for different musicians . One of them is Eric Clapton . Genesis first started in the late 60's if I'm correct .

Before Phil Collins went out on his own, he was the drummer for Genesis. And one of the best. I don't remember the whole story, but they needed a lead singer and new front man, and they pushed him up there, and Phil protested saying he couldn't sing and is too ugly to be the front man.. well it was like lighting struck. Then he went out on his own. Lots of great albums with him as the front man for Genesis and when he went out on his own. I was an yearly twenty something when this was busting the charts. On any beach during the summer, when this song hit a station, everyone would tune to it, and it would be playing through out the entire beach. On the 4x4 beaches, all the trucks would tune into it. That song was a phenomenon at the time. Phil was a hit machine. Sadly, he's very ill now. He was a private guy, so at the time, we never heard about the divorce, and there was tons of rumors of what the song was about (most prevalent was about Phil watching someone drown, with many different back stories to involving the drowning man and why he left him drown), and Phil didn't speak about the meaning at the time.
Been watching some of your others. Fun to watch your reaction from music not of your era. From knowing songs such as these... do you take the time to re-listen to them on a good sound system? If not , your really missing out. Even with head phones, the laptop audio processing , never mind PC speakers, , do not do this song, or others like, Led Zep, or EVANESCENCE justice.

I will never hear this song and not think of the first time I heard it, as the soundtrack to the scene in the premiere of "Miami Vice" when Crockett and Tubbs were driving to a climactic confrontation with the drug lord Calderone, who'd killed Tubbs' brother. Everything in the movie-length pilot just built up to this scene of them driving hard on the nighttime streets of Miami, each man lost in his own thoughts of what was to come and what brought them to that moment, and then this EPIC song playing along. Yeah, that was the '80s, kids!
