This DIY charging station was built out of a necessity to find a spot for the three tablets constantly roaming our house from my wife and I’s three small roommates. I wanted it to be a fun woodworking project but mix in some cool technology. Enter the LEDs and arduino project. It was my first time working with arduino projects and current sensors and I didn’t get it exactly right. But I learned a few new things about electronics projects and this DIY charging table is going to be just what our family needs to organize the cell phones and tablets.

Professional programmer here! Shoot me your code and I'll help fix you up!
So many people simply say : "you should ask so-and-so". I was going to offer my help, but I'm a medium level hobbyist.
Thank you for your kindness.
Had to give this comment a like! ;)))) Cheers!
I would love to help, but I guess he is already covered
because the charger will give a high current to detect the device so the led flash
Professional C dev here, if the guy who offers help needs help
wow, even if you had trouble with the code, the effect of the light pulsing around the epoxy is absolutely awesome to look at! that thing is super cool and looks great!
thanks! I was pretty happy with how the LEDs all turned out, just not reliable yet
I have to agree. Even though it was not the outcome you were looking for it does the job nicely. If it works and the kids are more organized and they like it Dad just got even cooler, I think its neat and I'm old!! Thanks for sharing ! :)
If you use wireless charging IT would be a masterpiece :)
The issue is these are cheaper tablets, so they don't support wireless charging. But it could easily be done with the CNC Router table, and has been shown on lots of other DIY youtube channels with and without CNC.
@@TheRogueBro The Google Nexus 7 is the only tablet that supports wireless charging.
@@Sandriell you can buy wireless charging attatchments for phones/tablets to convert them, I like to hide mine under a case
@@Sandriell i had no idea my super old nexus 7 had wireless charging.
@@TheRogueBro a qi charger can did it
9:02 The Arduino Due has a scheduler library available, that allows you to create threads running independently from each other, so you can update more strips at a time without messing with timings and other complex things. You can make as many loop functions as you need. It even has a lot more pins and it's a lot faster
Oh, man! That sounds perfect. Apparently I didn't do enough research..ugh
Due and scheduler are INSANE for this. Leave all the LEDs one strip, paint into a buffer (like a screen) and shift it out atomically. Tiny fast code. This is embedded mPU, not Microsoft bloatware.
Daisy-chaining the LED's is the easiest way...
If you get with Bob from "I like to make stuff" he does alot of projects with arduino chips and electronics he might help you out.
I would love to see a follow up video on resolving the LED problem.
As someone who has followed you a long time, this build is totally next level. I love that you used wood, epoxy, LEDs, arduino, etc.
Love this charging table! Really cool combining all those different elements into a cohesive build.
something about a workshop like you have is just satisfying
Very cool!! I really like what you did. This gives me a great idea for one of my projects. I would not call this a fail at all. It looks awesome and I'm sure your kids will get lots of use out of this charging station. Thank you so much!!
This is the first video of yours that I've watched, as it addresses an idea that I have that is similar, only using wireless charging instead of wired.
I really loved your enthusiasm, and your humor - you've got the viewer engagement part of making vids down pat!
Thanks for making my Friday!
Man, you got hands that produce masterpieces
great project, your one of my favorite builders, might I suggest using the magnetic usb adapters to solve some of the yanking problems.
Thanks for the honesty about the electronics not working like you intended. I think you made a really nice piece from some scraps!
I’m in love with this! I want one!!
This was a freaking awesome video... love it.. well done..
Awesome job man! Love it!
I love the commentary and jokes! They really make your videos stand out! :) And the fact that you show your mistakes instead of only showing a perfect final product!
Amazing effort mate!
That is a beautiful piece of furniture and a great and fun project... Well done
The table looks awesome! :D Keep up the good work
Such a great idea!!
this video is so wholesome, instant subscribe
I love this project. I'm adding it to my list.
Thanks!
"Im using one arduino uno for each charging station" *Ppl who are into electronics start crying in the distance*
Oh yes and one Arduino Pro Mini for all three stations would be more than enough!
@@SuchByte Coded bare metal instead of Arduino of course!
Could have connected all the LEDs in a row.
Works with Arduino and FastLED.
Well,I didn't cry
Coz it would have happened if I was alive
I just love that a carpenter tackled it and made it work! For a non-programmer to get it to do what he did is wonderful!
Id absolutely love to have so much equipment at my disposal. Love the videos.
I like it. The only reason I would’t do it here is because a usb charging cable stops working after 3 months in my house. 😂🤣. And I can’t see myself splicing a new one in four times a year.
I hear ya on that! I may just switch to the USB extender and let them deal with longer charge times for thr sake of easy cord switching 😀
A better option would be to eliminate the cable all together. Wireless coils for charging.
@@Fixthisbuildthat what if u add USB ports on the outside? Can always attach a new cable to it
Love it!!
I loved it Brad. Thanks for sharing it. I thought it's awesome. I would love to do all that. At 64 years old i still love to learn. Thanks again.
Walnut is a beautiful wood. It's one of my personal favorites.
Another job that is awesome, well done brad
Truely Awesome!
woah your equipments are cool, giod job!
The awesome idea, the awesone work!
I really enjoy your videos and actually decided to build my own table after i saw your wireless charger table video
that's awesome! Send me a pic on Instagram
So cool!!
Honestly in my book, I count that coding as a success!
This video is just amazing!
This is soooooo cool! You did great!
This idea would work really well with contact charging.
i am into both electronics and wood crafting
plz makes more projects like this
Very impressive. I love the build
Have to try new things once in a while. I really like your idea here using the epoxy and LEDs. I think it's great mixing old and new technologies, always gives me ideas.
Fantastic!
Very cool Brad.
This is what DIY is all about. Learning from your mistakes and in your next iteration you will become more confident and knowledgeable. DIY life.
Amazing!!
Love the new vid, commentary and editing. The dad jokes were good! LOL
it's beyond my immagination. how could you think about the LED stuff. Brilliant!!!
Awesome project!
Slick build...great ideas.
Great working concept! It was definitely inspirational to watch. 😎👍
Great ideas and great build. 100% impressed.
That's cool!
Cool build!
Thanks for sharing that
This is freaking awesome. Now you have my gears working 🧠 ⚙️💡 lol - love this. Endless possibilities and options to brighten up anyones day - 💡💡😐
Exactly! You can do so many things with computer controls. Endless possibilities for sure
Pretty great start for a prototype! This was inspiring enough to order an Arduino. Also, I noticed at 8:00 that your cut off snagged in the recess for the blade guard knife. I just had this issue as well when rabbeting. Would love to see your take on a temporary mod to the SawStop plate for this situation.
Would be so cool if the tablets had wireless charging through the table top
What a nice gift for your kids! I’m sure they thought it was amazing!!
What a neat and clean machine and workshop. wow
I freaking love this. I wanted to make a thin table to go behind the couch against the wall then run a wireless charging dock underneath it. The LED idea though, ohhhhhh that is mint I like
i think Great Scott and Brad are the beat combo in these situations
No idea of what you were doing or saying but watched the whole video because it was an amazing build! Loved it!
Good job! I want one!
*Super projet, merci pour ce partage* 👍
Sick!!!!
GREAT!
This is def a check out how much of a cool shop I have and tools and watch what I can do
Looks great. Good luck with figuring out the code details you want.
New sub here. Great work. Great idea!
That was dope
Thanks for teaching us sir God bless you sir
Take it from an old Electronics Technician. The effort you put into it shows that you care. You can always get help from an Arduino expert later on, if you haven't already done so. Don't ask me though. I stopped about 10 years ago. I did do LED lights all over inside and outside of my house. Just 2 thirty amp power supplies run everything.
Fun idea and great execution. Thanks for another great video.
You're welcome!
What a cool idea.
Great idea, great build. I might try this for my granddaughter.
cool gramma
sock ninja checking in! xD love the charging station idea
Very cool project. I just found your channel. Very impressive. I wish I had a workshop like yours to do projects in. Keep up the great work. Jori - Australia
Really friggin cool Brad! 😃👌🏻👍🏻👊🏻
thanks, Fred!!
Looks nice
I love this channel and its really helped inspire me and my newfound love of wood working. Ive only got a miter saw and a hand held circular saw but its enough for small projects like nice shelving. Hopefully gonna build my own furniture like a dresser and nightstands and maybe even a new bed frame and headboard
Awesome! You can definitely do it!
Nice project 👍
nice work, very nice
It was amazing
Neat project! You totally lost me with the electronic stuff but I still really like it
this is amazing
Cool ... when i saw the table i thod ud make it wireless ... that way cables wont burn out or plugs wont get damage ... but still verry cool ... good job man ...
He has entered the reign of electronics. what he doesn't know, is there is no way out.
Good job that is really cool
awesome
I had the same issue a while back when i added LEDs to my desk.
I used a chip based led striped (WS2812) and i needed a pair of buttons switching between animations.
After running in to forums i figure it out i needed to make custom delays!
Basically arduinos Delay function prevents other loops in the system, idk if thats ur case, tho great Job on the charging station!
Looks really good, as you said once you figure out the code you can just update it...maybe try multi colour LEDs so when its charging its red then goes green when full
Yeah, I'll try a few varieties
Cool 👍
Happy to help with your code! I've built many appliances with Arduino specifically, and have a degree in Computer Engineering with a specialty in Embedded Systems!
And for the record, I'm not smarter, you just lack the training; EVERYONE can code and build awesome things once they practice! Don't let a gap in knowledge ever cause you to back down from a project! Excellent first go!
VERY GUD JOB..
Very cool, bro.
Awesome build! Only thing I would chance, would be adding a spot for wireless spot for phones :)
Oh, I need to take this idea and add it to wireless charging and put it in my new desk build.
that idea is pure genius
Thanks! Makjosher got me going
Either way this is still pretty awesome.
