Dustin Penner secret drawer box - âą Secret Compartment Box II
I made this DIY valet tray with a hidden drawer and wireless charging continuing my journey into making a secret compartment in furniture. This secret drawer was tough to figure out because it was so small, but that made it even more fun when I got the hidden drawer release to work. Figuring out how to make the secret drawer mechanism was the hardest part of this one as I had to come up with a whole new solution from my other hidden drawer project, the nightstand with epoxy inlay. I canât wait to try my hand at the next one now!

Don't judge a man on his mistakes, judge him on how he fixes them.
Exactly! đȘ đȘ
That is some wisdom i did not expect from a youtube comment section.
Love this quote
Was taught this in my apprenticeship days, a slight deviation on this great comment. "A great chippy isn't one that doesn't make mistakes its one that knows how to fix them."
Don't judge anyone at all
I love seeing the mistakes, you aren't pretending to be perfect and it makes the videos much more informative (and entertaining).
I'm definitely good for providing entertainment at my own expense đđ
For us mere mortals, seeing how you cope with the whoopsies is really helpful.
I love the mistakes kept in the video and the work arounds that are come up with. I love them!
There are so many maker channels that make it look easy, because they don't show the moments of frustration. It's self affirming for regular Joes to see the mistakes the pros make.
Fisher's Shop does the same thing.
Be cause of this i love his chanel âđ€
You call these mistakes but they donât even seem to phase you when fixing them. Youâre a magician who makes the mistakes disappear. Letâs get to 1 mil subs!
When you make as many mistakes as me you get good at fixing them đđ. And 1M is getting close!! đ
Iâd be really interested in seeing a hidden âdrawerâ type section of furniture (maybe a coffee table or something) that incorporates suspension. Imagine: put down a mug of coffee, the bottom of the table drops đ€
Sounds like something I would make, but the bottom falling out would be accidental (I knew I forgot to glue something)
@@dswaney1975 Yeah, that happens to you too? I thought they just packed extra screws in those kits for kicks... And I'd regret making the table top sooo heavy as it is now resting on top of my foot.... "secret drawer"?? how about an anti-intruder security coffee table that fights back?
I don't know how to do anything mechanical, but I think that if you have a scale underneath that sends a signal to electromagnets holding the bottom of the table up, it could work.
Almost a million subs worth of experience and this man still gets excited when it comes together! Thatâs why this channel is one of my favorites.
Still gets me every time!
Fix This Build That love it brother! Thanks for the content!
I love that you said "Go Vols!" then followed it immediately by pouring those beautiful Florida Gator colors! nice project!
Those are Lady Vols colors đ much lighter blue
@@Fixthisbuildthat Well...you did pour a darker blue to make up for it...so...Go Gators :)
Nice project. Of course the ultimate hidden project is a hidden room behind a bookcase
yassssss
Great build, Brad. This is perfect timing for me, my brother just asked me if I could build him a valet tray. Love the hidden drawer mechanism. Awesome stuff!!
Your laugh when something works make me smile. I can totally relate.
It is totally AWESOME to see someone of your expertise and caliber being honest and showing that you are just a fallible as the rest of us mere mortals in the woodworking field!!! Thank you young Sir for helping me not feel so bad about my mistakes that I have had with my projects!!! đđ đ€đđ€
Mistakes = being real & human = viewer acknowledges himself being real & human = inspired, subscribed & ready to do some projects!
@10:43 nearly brought me to tears. "Bailed on the orange and we probably won't have a football season" you're right but what a shot in the gut. Go Vols!
I feel ya, man. I really want Pruitt to have a great year...but we'll see
I don't work with wood, so you seem like a graceful swan to me.
First time I've been called a graceful swan, lol
I literally cant build anything, but I'm in awe of your creations. Love it!
Love the hidden feature videos you have been doing. Maybe something along the lines of a coffee table with hidden remotes, charging stations, etc... Or a lockbox for delivered packages
So awesome the smile and laugh for every small milestone. Like watching a kid on Christmas opening his gifts.
Turned out amazing. Thanks for the honesty and showing people that mistakes are how we learn and grow. Nobody is perfect.
The look of joy on your face when you come up with a solution is priceless! Very interesting topic and combining mechanical curiosity and woodworking is inspiring! Great video and I hope you have more like this in the pipeline.
I loved the simplicity of this locking mechanism!
You're getting the mechanisms down for these secret compartments. I can't wait to see what's in store next!
Totally need this! So cool with the epoxy and secret compartment!
That blue and walnut looks awesome. Love that combo
Yeah, I dig it too
I'm coming up to my final exams in woodwork and materials and your idea with a wireless charger is really awesome and Im going to try and integrate it into my design, thanks so much man love your work
Good luck! đȘ đȘ
Great video. It is refreshing that not everyone on CZcams is without flaws.
Awesome build on this tray
hello i'm brazilian and i don't understand english very well but i'm in love with your channel your simple ideas but that is very useful for our day to day, and you explain each detail very well thanks
Itâs how BOB ROSS said âIt Was A Happy Mistakeâ. Your videos are still great and so satisfying to watch.
GR8 Valet build Mr. Bourne
I've just found your channel. Thanks so much for not editing out the mistakes. None of us is perfect, and it's great to see how you think through your fixes. The finished job looks great too. !!
i watched this without sound today, and well, i am telling you the faces and joy, were precious. that was truly enjoyable. Love your channel, keep it up.
hidden compartments and drawers are very cool. Great build Brad
That was super cool, love your honesty in what goes wrong as well as what works...
I respect this man for showing his mistakes and how he fixes them
I liked this before even watching it lol. After watching, I like it even more. Well done!
Nice Brad. I was already planning to make valet trays for all of my nephews for Christmas. Now they will be your design. Thanks!
Awesome, they will love them!
4:13 giving me Portal vibes. Exact same colors and I love it
Muito bom ficou top đđ»đđ»đđ»âđ»đ§đ·
These projects are so much fun! Could you do a shelf with a hidden compartment in a linen closet or a book case? I don't know how you would do it I just think something completely unassuming like a linen closet would be a good place to have a hidden stash. Keep up the great work!
wow, that's cool! It's not an easy work. You are genius. đ
I got the perfect build for you, because im already in the process of building it. It is a nice book hutch for a bed room. It has two cabinets on the bottom on either side and an open shelf in the middle. Above this is two drawers side by side. The top is 3/4 walnut plywood with edge banding. The book shelf is inset from the two sides 6 inches and 4 inches from the front. The feet run all the way up the corners to meet the top. There are two angled cuts on the feet one is from the inside corners runing to the floor. The other is only along the sides running from the base to where it meets the table top. Great video thanks.đđ€
New to woodworking started when off for 6 weeks for pandemic. Really enjoy until I heard that Go Vols!! đ đ€Ł
War Eagle!!
Excellent project. Please consider making a passive speaker with some cool twist :)
Thatâs Awesome! Love the colors. Just like the wooden watches
A wooden watch would look cool with it đ
Great build Brad!
This was a great project. The hidden drawer is ingenious.
Two words: Drill Press. Only way to be absolutely sure your holes are square to the surface. Great project!
Hey just wondering if you would be interested in making all the measurements after your done with it on video so we can make them the same way you did
Great build! Could you have drilled a small hole in the secret drawer to accommodate the longer pin? I'm thinking that would aide in securing the drawer.
Great Project. I am glad you went with the dark blue. Go Ole Miss, sorry couldnât help myself. Bryan
hahaha, just keep it in the SEC
Lol "go Vols!" But you poured Orange AND Blue! More like Go Gators! đđ€Ł This is awesome
Check the Lady Vols colors đ
Yet another amazing hidden compartment build! It's like seeing a wheel made for the first time LOL. Curious, what's the likelihood the brass release will wear down the wooden catch you put in? Would a brass catch work better?
I want one of these more than I want the nightstand!!!!!
Sensational! I love it!
Veramente bello!
Mi piacciono tantissimo gli scompartimenti segreti...BRAVO
Mistakes are awesome. It shows your learning process. Everytime you make one, you learn and grow a little. Keep making awesome videos!
That is really cool.
thx!
Love watching you make this stuff! It's so cool!
Killer video Brad! We need more dad jokes in these videos! :)
Yeah, I was a little light on the dad jokes on this one...I'll pick it up
Iâd buy one, thatâs awesome! And the nightstand secret compartment, thatâs awesome too.
That's a beautiful project. I love the contrast between the walnut and the blue epoxy.
The locking mechanism is genius, but the whole pull-reverse-push unlock is a little awkward. It also puts the longer pin inside the drawer when in the locked position, so it's likely to catch on or poke hole in some of the drawer's contents at some point.
I would have liked it if the center of the R was a push-button release, like the button on your nightstand project. You could have filled the letter with blue epoxy to match what you used on the bottom, or you could still fill it with clear epoxy even now. Or, find some nice bright blue glow in the dark additive for the epoxy fill so the letter lights up in the dark.
I used to get frustrated at my mistakes to the point of redoing the entire project. After watching your channel I've come to realize that mistakes are opportunities to try something different or new.
As for ideas, make a liquor cabinet or coffee bar or soda station (whatever you like to drink cabinet). Make a portable 2 person gazebo (to enjoy the outdoors but safe from mosquitoes). Make a wrap around tree bench. Make some small projects anyone can make with beginner tools such as a bird feeder, 6 pack caddy, firefly cage, cutting board or TV tray to name a few. I hope this sparks some ideas for you.
thanks for the feedback, and glad you've changed your view on mistakes!
Great new build! They're not mistakes, they are learning opportunities. Learn to fix it, make use of it, or decorate it! Life is about learning.
Very cool. Well done đ
Thanks đ
i would love to see a desk with built in PC and some hidden features like charger and draws
I really enjoyed this. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome!
Easiest subscribe of my youtube life. Not even 6 minutes in. Great stuff
Nice project!
Thanks!
Great Project!! This actually leads to a project I have been tinkering with to make, a charging station that can be wall or counter mounted...with a drawer or cabinet for storage storage...wireless charger(s), etc. Maybe a hidden drop for storage!!
You should do an entertainment system with a hidden drawer
Awesome build! Would have loved to see it where you press the monogram to open the drawer.
Brad thank you for the candid video. Too many makers will not show the mistakes, but by doing so you show that you're human.
It reminds me of the puzzle boxes that were sold in Turkey (early '80s) that were jewelry boxes. You had to move 2 or 3 pieces to get to the key and another to get to the lock.
Did you consider a magnetic catch imbedded into the charger section?
Waiting to include magnets into future builds. Wanted to use just pure mechanics for first few
@@Fixthisbuildthat Just keep the entertaining videos coming. I can appreciate the hard work that put into each project/video as I know that it takes time. Also, thanks to your wife for supporting you too.
Very cool! Nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
That's great, Brad. Mistakes? I could be the king. Engineers rule! Take care. Bill
The engineers know how to fix them though! đđȘ
That pretty cool! Like the idea of hidden drawer.
Very cool I want one big enough to hold a 9mm Shield in the hidden drawer
That is awesome.
Thanks!
Awesome. Your channel is very real man. Love this!
Very cool build!
That is a cool tray!
Love it!
You should build a bed headboard with hidden storage (maybe keeping the apoxy look)
man you are so awesome i like the way you dont pretend to make mistakes you are genious on your projects
So good!
thanks, Jonny!
That sure was a nice build. First time seeing one of your builds. Am so gonna check out some of your other work. Makes me want start making something again.
It amazes me how some of the simplest looking pieces are one of the most important
The hidden tray is saaaweet!
Fantastic build, love the hidden drawer and how you problem solved to make that workđ
Fantastic Design & Awesome Enthusiasm! Cheers for the inspiration.
This is great, not just your build but the video and instructions as well. Keep this up man.
Great job Buddy!
Dude, that's amazing, I really love the secret drawer stuff like you did with the night stand table, awesome build!!
Glad you liked it!!
I really liked this. Very nice job.
Turned out nice Brad good stuff
Thank you!
Brad, dude. You crack me up so much. First: to call you "friend" is worth every epoxy *learning* moment. Second: this is beautiful!
đ I have lots of learning moments
Thank you for sharing your talents and skills. Very enjoyable and entertaining.
I love how it worked when you didn't include the UT orange đ€Ł Hello from East Tennessee!
Great project. You should drill a hole in the drawer bottom so the long pin will fit in and add additional security from accidental opening.
Love this video! Great job!
you have so much patience and ideas on how to fix mistakes, you could make a house!
First secret compartments. Now maniacal laughter. Next video will be an evil lair time lapse build! đ
hahaha, my wife said "wow, that sounded like an evil laugh"
Awesome project brad hidden drawers are sooo cool. Get idea getting rid of the orange. GO DAWGS
