- He's a restaurateur, streetwear designer, TV show host, and author of "Fresh Off the Boat," his humorous 2013 memoir about growing up the eldest of three sons of Chinese immigrants that spawned a hit ABC sitcom. Eddie Huang talks with Mo Rocca about his disciplinarian parents, the myth of the "model minority," and pork buns.

Law degree, restaurateur, author, TV show host. He is a renaissance man.
Weed 🌱 enthusiast
Don't forget underwear model. I love Eddie!
Law degree? He dropped out at the first year
If he is anything like Eddie yang version of him, then I am amazed😂😂
So sad to hear he died
Eddie Huang: I want to break Asian stereotypes.
Reporter: yeah but Confucianism.
🤦♀️
Yeah, right? The exchange reminded me of an episode of the big bang theory, where the white guy (the Sheldon character) was telling the Asian/Indian guy (Raj) all about customs in Raj's country, and he looks at Sheldon and says something like "don't explain my culture to me"!
You can be assertive and polite under confucianism
@@linglee5759 That's not the point. The fact that Confucius is the first thing that he quoted to a Chinese American is literally the example.
@@linglee5759 Alex is correct. My point was Eddie is clearly an intelligent charismatic person with things to say. He specifically said he wants to break stereotypes. And immediately the reporter (most likely unintentionally) went straight to a stereotype. That's what I was saying.
People call the show racist but they don't realize that it's about HIS own life
He’s a fraud and indeed a racist.
@@jesusxi4119 go f yourself
@@jesusxi4119 how?
He literally lived it
I'll admit, that happened to me too lol But actually, it's almost complete fiction so. . . I mean, I get it. It's like an Asian version of every minstrel Madea show
And how he thinks all Chinese should stick together but wants immigration to the States 😂
I love the fact that the host was trying to use Confucianism to justify the characterization of Asians and Eddie just shot back intelligently using examples of western philosophers. You sir just got owned by Eddie.
No.
@@robertobravo5732 why not?
@@qanh96 mo wasn't being disrespectful.
@roberto bravo he wasn’t being disrespectful but he definitely had some preconceived bias about Asians which Eddie intelligently shut down. Period.
No one got owned. It was an intelligent response to a thought out question.
i like how he clapped back w/ plato & socrates when asked about confucius
@Anthony Joseph exactly
@Anthony Joseph it's funny that the original point was how you shouldn't judge people based on different perspectives (western society and Greek philosophers vs eastern and Chinese philosophers) while you try to make fun of someone for using "countercultural" slang and not "proper" English.
Eddie: It upsets me no one knows where TAIWAN is. When I was growing up, people thought we were from THAILAND.
Me: It upsets me no one knows where THAILAND is. People thought I was from TAIWAN. (back in the 80s)
they all knew where both countries were. pretending not to know is a very common racist method of frustrating people. same as intentionally mispronouncing names till you cave and choose a western name...
Sawadee krap
In america they don't even know where america is in the map
@@osmanshah5046 Actually, most of them don't. Americans are notorious for their ignorance of global geography. Also the distribution of immigrants are different in the different regions of the US; so depending on where one grew up in the US, the people around a person may be more familiar with one country vs. another.
As an Asian person, I can relate to what he said about the violent disciplinarian parents. In many Asian cultures, that is not seen as abuse.
“In America there is a desire to identify to describe and to categorize people”
That pretty much sounds like America to me .
More like Democrats
Kevin L Democrat’s ? There you go categorizing people
@@moemkane41 So you are telling me Democrats are not the one that categorizes all people???? That is the existence of the whole party. Its called identity politics. Even Democrats acknowledge this is their playbook
It's everywhere. Chinese identify and categorize all their ethnic minorities and they are all Asians too.
@@LightofBankai agreed, it's a human thing not confined to americans. though in america it just so happens to be that asian american males are subject to a narrower set of stereotypes. i think when you look at it from a broader perspective it's all the same, you'd just be swapping out one race with another. society needs hierarchy to function smoothly
"Being polite is a sound of distance" - the Mom is philosophical.
Man it's called that asian parent tough love, everytime my mom compliments me i'd be ok...ma what do you want me to do??? What, can't a mom just compliment her daughter?...ma we both know where this is going...just cut to the chase....fine i want you to do this ... for me (...= some asian culture fulfillment that you can't say no to)
Even without his accolades, his thoughts, synthesis of knowledge and articulation shows the depth of his intelligence and brilliance of character.
Wow, his real Mom is just as pretty as his TV Mom
I was thinking the same thing. From the pictures of her when she was younger, she was very attractive.
“What do you tell your friends your son does?”
Dad: “Lawyer”
Way to break stereotypes. Dude literally does everything creative under the sun and his parents go straight to his law degree?
Most respectable profession
Well, his parents aren't the ones trying to break stereotypes. Eddie is. Come on now.
He was never told he was great when he was little. He is one example to keep going forward no matter his race.
People can be whatever they want
I grew up so similar to Eddie..😢 But we all go through adversity and makes us a better person. Today I am so happy with my life and how my parents sacrificed to get us to the U.S.🙏👍
@King DelevingneSimilar in Cali...
This is so relatable as a Indian American who was born in Lowell Mass and grew up in Tampa Bay Florida.
3:28 his dads quick smile there shows how proud he is of his son.
You can tell his mom was portrayed pretty well in the show lol
I’m a white female, and watching fresh off the boat took me back to the 90’s during my childhood. I related with Eddie because I was the lazy b’s and mostly c’s kid, whereas my two younger sisters seemed to have it all together, with their perfectly tidy neat rooms and perfect grades etc. I’m currently on season 4, but it’s been a very fun and enjoyable show to watch after getting off work.
What a fantastic person!!! It would be an honor to meet him and spend the day talking!!!
1:19 I love the way he answered to that, he really shut him up and made that person realized he's dealing with somone with intellect.
This is one of the things I love about living in this country! Eddie you are so awesome!
Thank you Eddie for always being you and supporting our community. You are an inspiration to be unique and be yourself. Grateful for your presence in the mainstream, please keep modeling and pushing boundaries!
Eddie is a amazing man. He’s what America is about. America is supposed to be a shining beacon for the world. America’s diversity is what makes America great. We have all kind of different cultures and different backgrounds..
Being from an fob family I completely relate. I love Eddie.
Eddie Huang u rock !!! Thanks for for REMINDING everyone Asian Americans r RELEVANT n make significant contributions GLOBALLY!
I've read his books and watched his Vice series. This dude is a legend and an inspiration. I wish he would come out with more series
Being an Asian American also, Eddies journey is so close to the me in my brothers and I journey in life. The only difference is we didn’t get picked on as much because I’m 6’5 and my bro is 6’2. But I have done that ruler test also just hoping I fit in white Girls eyes. I laugh about it now being in my 30’s.
I loved this interview. His TV show "Fresh off the Boat" is fantastic. Always leaves me in stitches laughing.
Now I need to go to one of his restaurants.
Been following Eddie since his show on Vice was called Fresh Off the Boat. Just an all around great dude
Eddie is the man, his series is intoxicating ! Such a great outlook from another perspective. Freesh off the Boat is dank AF !!!!
This sounds like Haitian culture as well. Funny how kids of immigrant have similar backgrounds
@Kay Flip The old countries? What are you going on about? ha. No country is identical to another we may have similar values and cultures but no way are they identical.
I would say immigrants share similar experiences because they live in a country which is not where their ancestors are from so they get trated differently. I am British Born Chinese so I have many similar stories with Indians growing up in the UK etc. I wouldn't say our countries are identical though and no way is Asia like South America.
@@kart112 I believe he means that our parents aren't shy about clapping us around the ear when needed. I call it heavy handed love.
@@cheng8881 yeah but as someone who is Indian, parents are very strict about school. I think that's a trait shared by everyone in Asia from India to China. They have similar values. You might only be given one or two career options as well. Only doctor or engineer.
Wow the cast were incredible!
Hudson looks literally like real Eddie Huang
Ngl I got kinda surprised too when Eddie started citing Socrates and Plato lol
His show on Vice (Huang’s World) was the 💣
Eddie to the world, nuff respect 👏
I would really appreciate meeting Eddie and dining at his restaurant one day. Such a profound, intelligent guy. Enjoyed watching his travel videos he had on channel.
lol, didnt realize how funny and expressive evan is. he should be an actor
Dude everytime I find out more about him, I'm even more impressed.
Did this man just talk about his size on TV 😭😂
Eddie Huang, the man. Mo Rocca is loving that pork bao.
Just want to say,: gorgeous mom! From another Taiwanese mom.
"It's just me against the world! I got nothin to lose it's just me against he world baby! Me against the world!"
Very relatable coming from an immigrant family as well.
Huangs world is the best show ever!
Embracing different cultures/ learning different foods & personalities✌👍😀
I’m the only asian at my job coming from Cali the Midwest ... the struggle is real .. shout out to all my fob family me included lol . We all relate !!
Eddie, keep doing, what you're doing, Eddie Huang
Wow being polite is a sign of distance that one resonates hard.
I love Eddie!
Omg, so proud of him.
What a star! So nice to see his description of life.
We can have a respect for our heritage and an appreciation for our American culture. I am very grateful to have lived in this country 😊👍🇺🇸❤️
I love this!!!
Love that show" some how knew it was real story, thanks for sharing the this 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Yo Eddie ! Much Love from Orlando ,FL baby !
Just came here because i discover Fresh Off The Boat on an illegal streaming website, and wanted to know more about Eddie.
Cheers from France.
I can really relate with Eddie. I always get beat by my parents for one little thing and I'm one of the only Asians in my class. When I read the book I could really feel myself in him.
Love the guy. Two thumbs up
I loved his show on Viceland!
The brother's comment, about mom... it's entertaining. 😂😂😂
Mah man Eddie, smart and talented, also cooking god
Huang is hungry. So hungry, he's now successful.
This show is SO good
props to Eddie for being such a strong, independent voice for Asian Americans. He's his own boss, meanwhile I'm up for a promotion so it's "thank you sir may I have another" for me.
5:28 Eddie's dad is a G
Its a trip seeing this after watching fresh off the boat
Need bring back the show
Damn they got the casting on the show so right!!!
You da man Eddie! 🙏🏽💜🍜🥟🥡🥢🍚
I'm not sure what was worse for me, the stress positions where I was treated like a prisoner of war by my parents or being hit by my mom. Korean parents, am I right folks...
This man is an inspiration.
I like everything this guy does!!
Good for you Eddie!
I feel like Asia men understand black women a lot
black women and asian men are perceived very similarly in relation to their counterparts, just on the opposite side of the spectrum. The perceived stereotypes that make black men desirable(manly, masculine, aggressive, etc etc) in the dating arena become negative for black women. Its works the same way for asian women(submissive, passive, quiet, etc etc) and asian men. Hence why they is such a fetishization of black men and asian women.
I think there is a connection because black women and Asian men are low on society’s totem pole. They don’t get the respect or recognition and in our competitive society few make it like Eddie to become role models.
What's funny is that the original black/white interracial "couples" were white men and black women...and the original Asian/white couples were Asian men and white women. We only live in this sliver of time but if we were to see history we would realize that black women and asian men have been desirable all along.
This why I like Asian men they understand me better
@@snakedurant3556 i see alot of white men with asian women, not asian men with white women.
The irony! I'm Thai but people think I'm from Taiwan!
Yeah
TheLastHotSauce your all the same
I always thought the old Asian man say”i dont want any trouble” bc he didnt want to reveal his awesome ninja moves 🤣
Eddie don’t be offended bc people don’t know where Taiwan is...people in this country don’t even know about their own history. I’m from Puerto Rico, an American, living in Colorado, and many mainlanders don’t know where PR is and that we are Americans...
Eddie is the man! 🙌🏼
This was fascinating! Now I wanna go to Baohaus and get the bun with the hamburger meat ...
YEAAAH 😎
I feel when when I said I’m from Taiwan many people hear Thailand also.
woww they have same name as of the series. thats awwsomeee, Jessica is Savage
Hey my man lol 😂 I haven’t heard or gotten any notifications from you!! Great to see you
The legend
SUCH AN AMAZING MAN RIGHT THERE!!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👊💪💪 YEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Eddie is the man!
This guy is straight up my idol.
When I first watched Fresh Off The Boat I didn't like it but now i'm dying to binge watch it
What a delight. Not certain I agree with the parents, mistakes are the key to creativity.
Food is a great peace maker. Come to my table and discover the world.
Actually *LEARNING* FROM MISTAKES is the key to creativity.😊 If mistakes in an of themselves automatically teaches someone creativity [or wisdom,] SKID ROW would be EMPTY.
If we could all truly try one another’s food, I think the world would be a much better place. Maybe that’s the key to all of this...
Eddie Huang, I’m at your parents age and I grew up being “disciplined” also. While I do believe that it maybe necessary when major wrong is being done by the child, but to get spanked just because the grade has fallen, is ridiculous! I hope when you have kids of your own one day, you’ll never be “violent” to them. To beat your child thinking that’s training for leadership is simply, a load of craps.
I think this is representative of poor immigrants moving to "lands of opportunity", rather than just an asian thing. They do understand that as the non-dominant race you have to work way harder to be on the same level and in most asian cases to just get to 2-3 levels below those of your peers. The only thing wrong is their execution of motivation. Older generations grew up with discipline through fear and while some have assimilated, they still have issues of showing remorse, at least to your face.
@GreaterGood510 You think a child should be subjected to violence because they didn't get perfect grades or wanted to play like a normal child? That's just an older person applying their anger issues and unfulfilled ambitions because they are in a position of authority.
Thanks..
So proud of Eddie and his fam. ASIAN PRIDE.
Im a immigrant too. Can relate.
That red braised pork though!!!
In Trinidad and Tobago..we have char su pork..it is red..too
After the first season the vibe wasn’t the same
Those were some pretty good questions
Eddie is a BRILLIANT gentleman
When I was young, people would think I was from Taiwan, when I am Thai, know the feel Eddie!
Same
Also I’m in eight grade rn and people still think Taiwanese people are Thai
Eddie should thanks his parents. They strict but look at him now
Awesome man!
Why is Emery rarely mentioned
Those are true asian parents
