    Eddie has an awesome dad. Extremely fortunate. He was raised to be confident and lead, rather than being obedient and follow. That alone decides a kid's future.

      I bet his dad was a hard ass growing up. What you see on camera is not what you see off camera. When Eddie bounced from law, I bet his dad just didn't say "oh well" but instead railed him and ripped him a new one. I'm sure his dad has chilled out over the years. I can only image what it was like to be under that household.

I could actually relate to the exact feeling and memory of visiting that place and paying my respect to my family who came before me.

  • @craigtsao9295
    @craigtsao9295 Před 9 lety +127

    This kind of hurt to watch. Not in a bad way on the show. Just personally as a Chinese/Taiwanese American. I was pretty much a neglected third child who was never taught anything and discouraged by my family, often with complete indifference regarding how it affected me because I was just the youngest child who just needs to catch up to my siblings who are 3-6 years older. I'm pretty sure my father has Aspergers along with other issues that can probably be traced back to his lineage (there's some serious history I'd rather omit but he's very proud to brag about.) Looking beyond my messed up cultural and social upbringing, I have no choice but to just forgive and keep moving forward with my life.
    It means a lot for me to see a great episode like this. It just sucks to see an example of something I can relate to but not have when it comes to the cultural benefits of being Chinese American. My mother's parents seem to be the most sane people in my family tree but, they were killed by a drunk driver before I was born. My mom never tells me about her family besides a few instances of how her siblings treated her. When I did a solo hike of the Appalachian Trail and kept an online journal, she started telling me that I think just like her father. So here I am today... I'm just an American. I don't speak Chinese, I don't know anything of my ethnic culture, I know almost nothing of my family history, and I've never even been to that side of the world. It would be an understatement to say how much I want to just leave behind everything I know and start fresh.

      Cheer up Bro, I understand how you feel. I'm also a child of Chinese immigrant, but I don't really have any meaningful relationship with my father. In fact, I fuckin hate and despise him and his relatives.
      Not everyone is as lucky as Eddie, to have a Chinese father who is open minded.

    • @felixt212
      @felixt212 Před 9 lety +7

      Perhaps you could go to Asia and see what it's really like? If you want to learn more about your ethnic background try taking classes and spending time with Chinese people? Everyone has their own path to take but that's just my experience. I never really spoke or read Chinese/ Cantonese until I went to HK&China to live and made a specific aim of learning the language and culture...
