  • Hi all. Painted up the British Sprue. Some thoughts on basing and why I’ve split my bases.
    If anyone has any spare Scott’s Greys I’d be very thankful if you could send them my way 😊

    Glad to see im not the only one who chose to split them! I've gone for 40mm frontage bases with 15mm of depth and a single half strip per base, with cavalry on 40x30mm bases and 3 horse per base.

    I saw this video months back and i have used exact same basing fo my epic waterloo collection as well and i might add that as i use Age of eagles ruleset and brigade stands vary from 3 to ten+ bases so this method is very cost effective and of course looks great on the tabletop. thanks leon great video.

    Many thanks for this tip on splitting the strips in half as I was planning to do the same as I also wanted to play games on a smaller table. Good idea with basing the cavalry in 3's, I am going to base all the heavy cavalry the same way and my light cavalry in 2's for quick identification. Keep up the great content..

    These are fantastic mate, I love what you’ve done for the Hanoverians, they look as though they come that way. I think the cut down bases works really well and not to much clean up after you’ve cut them down. The bases for the cavalry look better also, using the wider base looks better on the table. • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms Před 2 lety +1

      @@leont66wargaming31 Yeah the frontage is certainly an odd choice in many ways, I thought so with Epic ACW as well. I think what I’ve gathered is that they’re aiming for a certain ‘look’ visually for Epic, of real massed ranks rather than what we often see with smaller scales, just smaller bases but pretty much the same number of models as 28mm. I like the vision, but I think they could have gone somewhere in the middle and achieved both maybe.
      I considered cutting the bases down myself, but couldn’t face the tidying up afterwards, I’d have had to make a clean job of it or it would have niggled at me - yours look great though. I’m just going to use less stands on smaller tables though, I’m only planning on playing Black Powder I think, so I’m not so worried about representing companies as individual stands. But love what you’ve done.

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  Před 2 lety +2

      Yep I agree I get what they’re aiming at. And yes it’d of been better if they’d of found some middle ground. With my ACW I just use 3 stands instead of 5. I suppose I could of done the same with these really lol. But the composition of the battalions for each army are quite different for Napoleonic so decided to cut them in half. The clean up isn’t to much hassle but yes I could live without it.
      Agreed one single base could easily represent a battalion and that gives the more grand armies epic encounters. That way you can play divisional battles as well. Lots of scope with these minis. I wonder how far they’ll take it? If we’ll see Russians or Austrians? Don’t think I could face painting more Austrians though hahaha

    • @MiniatureRealms
      @MiniatureRealms Před 2 lety +1

      @@leont66wargaming31 Russians and Austrians would be amazing. I’ve thought that Epic as a project was always designed to be relatively big, but limited releases rather than ranges, so in many ways I wouldn’t expect more. I think it’s more likely we will see Epic ECW, Epic Agincourt, Epic Romans Vs ……etc first. But maybe if the Waterloo stuff is huge, they might be tempted to invest in a few more plastic frames, and if they could cover it in brigade boxes as a release then maybe they will. I feel that would work better than a ‘Epic Austerlitz’ or ‘Epic Borodino’ big release, I feel Waterloo will have taken the limelight for the period as a huge release.

  • @Edward-Plantagenet
    @Edward-Plantagenet Před 2 lety +1

    Great video! Good to actually see how the infantry are (mostly) easy enough to split as I'm planning to do the same, half bases. I've decided though to stick with the BP basing conventions, 4 infantry bases per battalion and 3 cavalry per regiment, mostly because the rules I plan to use (Black Powder, General d'Armee and Bataille Empire) aren't concerned with companies, merely that all battalion frontages are the same. The varying strengths of battalions on both sides further reduces my concern about companies and differing frontages. A real bonus of using strict half sizes is that I literally get double the numbers of battalions and 12 cavalry regiments per side, 9 figures per regiment fitting nicely into the sprue caused figures count which leaves you with a quite a few left overs if going full size. I do plan to use 6 bases for large battalions though, vs the suggested 5 as it keeps things more symmetrical.
    As an aside, IIRC, the French attack column was actually deeper than it was wide, 2 companies wide, 3 deep (22 yards by 30 yards). The British trained for it as well, Grand Division, but didn't use it at Waterloo, hence the (if it's been retained from Albion Triumphant 2) the 'Cannot form Attack Column' special rule.

I’ll be picking it up next week and will see how it looks and paints up. If it’s ok I’ll order the battalion STL (all half size) and just get the Command strips printed. At $18 for the battalion STL and less than $1 per command strip it will probably still work out cheaper than 40+ Minifigs figures plus postage. Given I don’t actually need that much printed stuff it’s just something I’m not prepared to add to the things that suck my time. I’m more of a gamer than a hobbyist and even see painting as somewhat of a chore, so I’m definitely not adding yet more distractions. They are looking lovely mate, beautiful work on all the figures and the basing makes sense. For the French, if you want to do 3 ranks, do a single line of skirmishers and stick on the front?

    These look great, you’ve done a lovely job with the painting. I like the split bases too. However, the main reason I’m hesitating to use these is the lack of skirmishers for the British. Even the Rifles are in close order. Have you got any advice for a fix? Other manufacturers that match perhaps?

      There are some 3D stl files you can get for the skirmishers. I haven’t found a metal range that fits though. I’m splitting single guys off the strips and using them as skirmishers. The shoulder epaulettes aren’t right and they’re just in marching poses, but for now they’ll do. (Until I get round to buying a 3D printer lol)

  • @Rusty_Gold85

    Don't worry about the British length of line as they threw forward their Light Companies as skirmishers and they shot at the French way out front then ran back into squares at any threat of Cavalry. So they were not standing in line. As for the French 3 ranks you are representing 600-800 in 6 companies and the rules (unless they do in your version)do not use rank firing

      @@leont66wargaming31 i was hopping around in your back log, and it doesn't seem to be the case. It's generally cause by mouth movements, hydration, and mic distance/position.
      It's something voice actors have to constantly struggle with. Since I had it pointed out to me after a recording session, I can't not hear it in everything I listen to, and it's become a pet peeve, like chewing noises. Look around for eliminating mouth noise videos, it's a whole rabbit hole.
