This has been typical throughout the decades. Most high school kids are awkward and geeky, and most are still developing. As a result, early to middle 20 somethings have often been cast so as to present a better image on the screen. This has been especially true of characters in shows portrayed as "studs" (males) and "bombshells" (females). Older actors and actresses were always chosen for those parts because they were fully developed. In shows like "The Brady Bunch" and "Facts of Life", the guest characters whom the regular characters had crushes on were always in their 20s even though they were portraying high school kids.
