it it possible to upgrade a cable-based 1988-2002 rear caliper with a hydraulic 2003-2006 caliper maybe using bracket adapters?

Are the brake pads specific to either the front or the rear, or are they all the same? Thanks.

These machines do use a different part numbers for the front and rear brake pads.
