@@GilbertGTV I do. She went on a TV show to do promotion with the composer and had to be begged to hmmm a few melodies. This is the same person who never sang her biggest hit live, despite people asking her to sing "A Woman in Love". It's only recently that she had opened up about her previous ways.
Just finished reading her autobiography. She dealt a lot with self-doubt which is why she didn't like to sing in public. She handled herself pretty well here, considering.❤❤
You can tell Barbra was petrified and tried to get out of doing it, but she ended up sounding lovely anyway despite not knowing the words. That is sheer talent.
Yes,it's that why he asked her to sing...it was the first ( and only time) she was on french tv and it was the biggest show at that time...i was 14 and was so happy to hear her magical voice!!..listen to the applause at the end...it was a great moment for the public and the wiexers of the show...
She once said in an interview "I wish I could be like Liza Minnelli and spontaneously get up at a party and stand by the piano and sing. I can't. It scares me too much." She was scared to death I think. Do I understand it? No. (Edit; only because if I could sing like that you'd never shut me up!) But most of us have fears that, at one time or another, might seem irrational to others. But they're real to the person who has them. Is a praying mantis crawling up your leg going to hurt you? No. But very few of us could honestly say we wouldn't freak out if we didn't feel a tickle and look down and see one of those things on our shin. This is obviously to promote "Yentl" (that's Michel Legrand with her) so it's well before overcoming her fear of public performance--thanks to teleprompters and Paxil she has said. I've seen her live twice, and many times on cable, DVD, talk shows, etc. since overcoming that fear. Today she would get up and do it and laugh at herself for forgetting the words.
A lot of artists need to prepare their voice and their minds to perform especially a pro like Barbara they are lucky she complied I know she has always suffered with severe stage fright😳🥺😍
I love Streisand and I feel sad for her, you can truly see she had some problems here, anxiety and true self doubt! Crazy that probably the most talented woman in the world would suffer for just a small thing.
Streisand’s voice is always beautiful. I think she was caught off-guard, but sang the haunting melody nonetheless. Legrand should have chosen a lower key to accommodate their voices.
Oh no!..i was 14 during this show...so happy to have the opportunity to ear her sing in french tv...listen the applause when they said she was going to sing...she was such a superstar at that moment!...
Thank you, CelineOracle, for sharing this spontaneous moment of Ms. Streisand, which was so enjoyable. Barbra originally sang this song in the key of F#m on the official album of The Way We Were. But, at this event, Michel Legrand happened to play in the key of A-minor, which is supposed to be for a male voice. Barbra did it so smoothly and effortlessly, though. Love it. Thank you again.
Yes She said that she would have severe stage fright, why her concerts were so few and interviews rare, just for this reason. It was fortunate that she came out at a time when modern day film musicals were still popular. It show cased her voice, talent, a quirky personality that was able to shine thru all her characters. It was a perfect genre for her and made her a Super Star!
"The pianist" happens to be Michel Legrand. He was an Oscar winning legend. Singer, composer and musical arranger. He worked with Barbra in her "Je m'apelle Barbra" album and in the "Yentl" soundtrack.
Just my take, Like Superman, she has a kryptonite in her system. A certain flaw. Probably her short term long term memory. In which she needed to practice to polish a performance. Having that flaw creates that stage fright or uneasiness especially impromptu . But her voice is pure and legit. She is the first singer that I encountered having such, almost all the singers would sing even a few lines like what we do as ordinary people.
I can understand it might be awkward in some ways, but it's Barbara Streisand and I'm sure it's not the first time people wanted her to sing without notice. Don't know why rehearsal or thinking of a song was so important. They just wanted to hear her voice and I think any song would have worked. Let her sing something out of the phone book, i'll be happy with that . I think she handled it kinda well, looked a little frustrated but her voice was still stunning .
Rehearsal is important for many artists. People like Barbra are perfectionists and they want to sound good. Plus she is well known for having stage fright so putting her on the spot like that wasn’t cool. It’s also not cool to demand a performance from someone.
as a singer, I hate beyond anything when someone asks me to sing spontaneously. most of the time when you do something as your craft or passion you are a perfectionist in it. no warm-up, and no mental preparation makes your voice (at least to you) sound absolutely awful.
Talk about being caught between a rock and a hard place. She really wasn't prepared, and I can tell from her facial expression that she didn't want to do it. The guy really didn't need to sing with her; he messed it up! However, as always, with partly singing the words and humming too, she sang it beautifully.
Reminds me of the scene in A Star is Born where John Norman Howard (Kris Kristofferson) is listening to "Esther" singing for the first time and the aggressive/obnoxious fan orders him to get up and sing. I think Barbra felt like a trained seal here as well. #LifeImitatesArt
Poor Barbra. I don't like to see her cornered like this. But still, at least she was game enough to give it a try. She looked totally at a loss for any song to try. But, it occured to me, how could she be so far removed from her early days around 1962, and 1963, making her living by performing in clubs. Only a few decades later, she is absolutely stumped for any song. But, in my heart, I am on her side. She is always more enjoyable when she is prepared and in the right mood. Aren't we all?
Barbra did what many do early-on. She learned the basics of speaking French and Italian. She was never proficient (as obvious in this video) in French. When she did speak French, she spoke it (nearly) sans accent.
Oh, I think she was fine, considering that she was caught off-guard and hadn’t rehearsed. If she’d known, I’m sure she would’ve practiced a hundred times before she stepped on the stage. The only problem is that Legrand chose a key that was too high. She hit all the notes, but it wasn’t the most beautiful part of her voice.
I just don’t get it… She came on this show to promote “Yentl” in France and since she sings in the film, it only makes sense to perform at least one of those songs on the show.
@CelineOracle wow she looks to be in her early 50s here, but yeah she had been "singing" over 30 years at this point and still couldn't perform 1 full song live lol 😆
