  • Create a chord progression that combines Pitch-Class Set (PCS) harmonies with a Riemannian Transformation (RT) triadic progression. The RT progression includes chromatic mediant pairs, the SLIDE transformation and the symmetric scale hexachordal triad pair. The PCS is based on the all-interval tetrachord 4-Z15 and its Z-related companion 4-Z29. The harmony uses various PCS properties such as the original, transposed and inverted form, common notes for different forms, voicings that focus on specific intervals or dissonance distribution. This technique is demonstrated with an example orchestral composition. Companion document (text, diagrams and score fragments) and source material available on Patreon.

Frans, I am returning to this video almost a year after I first watched it and I remain fascinated by the methods and ideas that you have shared. When I first watched, I immediately had to take and adapt one of my OpenMusic patches to incorporate the searching for other sets that contain common intervals/notes. This has been a huge help for writing passages that balance familiarity and cohesion with newness and alien structures. All of your videos are incredible and the channel itself is a trove of theoretical knowledge. I would really enjoy visiting more about your own compositional journey and Schillinger if you ever have the time!

@Austin Poorbaugh, Thanks for sharing your OpenMusic experience. I guess I should take a closer look at this IRCAM music composition toolbox. To get into contact send me an email with the subjects you would be interested in.

Exceedingly wonderful! I have never learned music theories from online videos which are as deep as your videos!

@clouddai1338 Thank you for the enthusiastic and positive feedback. Of course one cannot oversee everything that is available online, so there may be better videos, but I am glad to learn that you find the tutorials on my channel useful. In case of further questions or things being unclear don't hesitate and ask. We will be exchanging information as we have been doing before.
