Tommy Cockles (Simon Day) & David Tomlinson interview (Wogan, 1992)

  • Wogan, 27/03/1992 - a bizarre interview, with everyone (apart from the confused audience) in on the joke that a pre-Fast Show Simon Day actually was Tommy Cockes ("TC"), star of the music halls. A slightly worse-for-wear David Tomlinson, of Mary Poppins fame, and good ol' Terry Wogan laugh along. A wonderful ten minutes!

All Simon Day needed to take from this was that the biggest talent in that room aside him was absolutely delighted with his TC character.
When David Tomlinson 'gets' it, you've done something very good indeed.

I love Terry Wogan bless him but how bloody ignorant can you get thinking David Tomlinson was in The Sound Of Music lol. Always loved David's moustache, blower/ trilby hats and business suits with the poppy in the top pocket, David was synonymous that way and can't get used to him without all that in his other films. Loved David Tomlinson and he will always be Mr. Banks, Emilius Browne and Peter Thorndyke to me. Wish he was still around and working today and wish he had made more classics both Disney and non-Disney.

It's MY tuppence! Without seeing the original I dunno what that Sound of Music bit was all about... There was definitely an in-joke thing going on here, so Wogan may've been referring back to earlier in the show... which, alas, I didn't tape.

I'm about to turn 30... I grew up watching Marry Poppins several times a week for years! It shaped me as a child in the best ways possible. All the best actors from Marry Poppins are leaving the mortal world and it saddens me greatly! As a kid his role made me dislike him but as I grew up I learned to appreciate his position in the movie and how his character developed. I shed a tear when I learned last year that he had passed away. Almost as much as I cried watching Karen Dotrice cry in an interview about not seeing Matthew as much as she wished she did between the events of Mary Poppins and his very untimely death at a young age. Out of any movie and cast, I had always dreamed to meat Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke and The rest of the main people.

There was a period where Terry Wogan got a bit too big for his boots with all the success; three-times a week chat show, etc. Latterly, he came down to earth again and was the BBC's favourite radio and tv host we all appreciated, but here, he is absolutely dreadful; struggling to know what to do with such a diverse booking. Dear old David Tomlinson must've wondered what on earth he was doing on what was a really rubbish edition of Wogan. The audience clearly felt uncomfortable, given their silence.

Tommy Cockles (Simon Day) & David Tomlinson interview (Wogan, 1992) 0553am 2.8.23 that's not bad, is it... wakes up of a morning... gets a lift to an obscure corner of a street somewhere. walks about a bit. gets a bit of sympathy from the derby and joan.... and gives a talk to a rapt audience... or a literally captive audience. we haven't quite made up our minds on that score. durin' the worwer (war) tommy was seen to be enacting various music hall skits to a shell shocked audience to much applause. and aplomb.
