I remember reading that Fun Publication story the first time and it really sold the character to me as a favorite. I managed to acquire the figure for the combiner and I’m glad you did a basics episode for this character.

I really hope that Punch/Counterpunch gets featured more prominently soon. It’s rare that in Transformers fiction we get to see a double agent, especially an Autobot double agent. It’s a really cool concept!
Punch/Counterpunch was a bit of a bumbler in Headmasters, it's true, but then again the Decepticons in that series weren't exactly taking home prizes in the intelligence category either.

Yeah in one scene I saw, Galvatron saw Counterpunch running away and thought he was Punch. AND HE WAS CHILLED OUT ABOUT IT!

Punch/Counterpunch is an interesting character. Shame he wasn't used all that much.
I'm surprised that IDW never used him. I feel like if the spotlight series had continued (some of my favorite issues) they would have eventually gotten to him. I know they used doubledealer in the Hot Rod one but he's not as interesting. Thanks for another awesome video Chris!
Yeah, I was hoping he would be the deep cover agent the kept mentioning in the comics.
They were going to, but didn't. He could have even ended up being part of something like the Last Light or even a Wrecker or something.
I feel like the Spotlight they did for Mirage would have been more appropriate for Punch/Counterpunch.
Maybe you Chris can finish Lagacy of Rust as an epilogue to the IDW universe for the next convention.
They did, eventually, in their Generation One prequel comics.
Thought the concept was so cool at the time and still do just like Sideways in Armada. It would of for sure been cool to see him more in G1. I think both variations of his story were cool being just an Autobot spy in G1 and then the added twist of giving him a split personality in the comics. Still one of the better gimmicks of The Transformers.
My goodness the potential for the idea of one’s deepest most inner dark side fighting to come out and actually doing so, leading to a massive inner struggle where one fights to stay good. It could be some amazing story in there. These characters with huge potential help me remember why I love transformers so much

Punch is one of the most fascinating TF characters I ever read about. I initially only got the toy (which was NOT amazon exclusive in the Philippines) just because of the swap gimmick. But ever since I read up on him, I was surprised at how much potential this character had as a double spy and split personality. If he was done right and given a chance in media, he could have just as much fame as the likes of other faction-swapped greats like Jetfire and Dinobot.
Every time Space Ape has a survey asking players of Transformers: Earth Wars what characters they would like to see added to the game. I always say Punch/Counterpunch. It would be so much better then another Gnaw event.

Mr Hyde was not a split personality, it was just a chemically induced younger version of Dr Jekyll which he used to idk, do drag or something, but the only reason Mr Hyde looked younger was because as a part of Dr Jekyll that was usually shut away, he never got to explore that part of himself

Great seeing the best gimmick Transformer getting love. Can't believe he never featured in IDW. He's the most IDW, one-shotty character ever.

Punch/Couterpunch was one of my favorite characters added in season 3 and 4, I plan to buy his new toy soon. Great video, and I wish Punch/Counterpunch has some more roles in The Transformers

Grew up watching the transformers unicron trilogy/ beast wars and the live action film's, finally started the G1 series my freshman year of high school back in 2010, and i saw punch on screen and instantly fell in love with his character, "I've always loved the Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde story" seeing a transformer like that, he instantly became my favorite transformer and I was heartbroken ti discover how misused he is, thanks for giving my boy some spotlight Chris, I'm hoping this is the start of him gaining the popularity he deserves.

he sounds like a pretty fun character, getting a double spy from the Autobot side could give some fun plots, shame he never got that much attention in much, who knows in the future.
A recolor of the Power of the Primes toy in much brighter colors was also released in the War for Cybertron: Earthrise toyline in 2020 as well. Oh, and in some Transformers roleplay, I'm using Punch/Counterpunch quite often as me and a friend have him help a female Autobot Double Spy get acquainted to the role. It's a lot of fun!

Chris McFeely Thank You for this video. Because PUNCH is ONE of my FAVORITE Transformers. I could never remember HIS name. But after seeing this video. I'll never forget it. And I've got to order the 2018 version of PUNCH.
I've always lamented that IDW never did anything with Punch/Counterpunch while they had the chance, hopefully they will make use of him one they restart the comics later this year. The character(s) have so much potential for a noir-esque storyline in the vein of the Departed and Memento with elements of Split.
Another character I've never heard of, and yet immediatly want to see more of.
Man I feel so nostalgic. I would've never remember this guy, but upon viewing your clips, I not only remember the commercial and toy but I remember that scene and his line on the show. I guess it just takes on little trigger to unlock the memories. I think I was really hyped on the concept as a kid, so some characters you look for in the show.
Interesting enough after I saw some blue bloods and Chicago pd episodes i had a development called it the punch-counterpunch spectrum. The more an ally is undercover the faster the alter ego their persoma takes over. To the point they may not return.

When I first saw Punch/Counterpunch I can tell that he (or them) has the potential to become something more than meets the eye.

I'm hoping Punch makes his appearance in the new IDW reboot of G1. I felt really cheated that he never got his chance to shine in his own comic like they intended.
One of my all time favorites. Love the concept and design of him. Breaks my heart that he hasn't been used more.
Mr James 'Steven Moffat Jr' Roberts thought we really wanted to know that Anode and Lug were a thing, John Barber thinking we really wanted some more of Slide's whining or Hasbro believing we can't go on for a day without Windblade appearing instead of you know... Trying to give some focus on characters that are actually interesting and rich with potential like Punch/Counterpunch himself.
I like these smaller characters, because it just show that there is untapped potential within them

I absolutely LOVE Punch/Counterpunch! He's such an interesting character and has such a unique gimmick to him. I'd probably say that he's up there as being one of my favorite Transformers of all time!

Punch has always been one of my favorites, and I've always found the concept of his double spy transformation so cool, yet severely underused. I also like to think of him as the inspiration for "shifters" like Makeshift from TFP, and a shifter himself (this is just headcanon of course). I've still gotta pick up that amazing potp figure. Look forward to the next one, Chris!
Thanks for the in-depth info. Was never able to see Punch/Counterpunch aside from his short stint in season 4. Always thought--even as a kid--that he had a LOT of potential for storytelling. Anyway, what brought me here was the fact that I just pre-ordered his MasterPiece scale 3rd-party figure--X-Transbots Bond & James. Quite a funny name! LOL Thanks again!

I remember the G1 figure coming out and thinking it was absolutely next level. Loved this figure and all of the Headmasters and Targetmasters.

The G1 toy was one of my favorites. I bought my son the Amazon PotP version for Christmas. He loves it.

It might be neat to have an adaptation of Punch that harkens back to the original version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In Stevenson’s original novel the transformation was purely physical, like when a Transformer converts to vehicle mode. Punch slowly becoming more and more corrupted by his time as Counterpunch until he meets a tragic end would be a fun literary allusion.

Thanks so much for this video! I have this one and had forgotten what his name was, just that he was a double agent. He looked cool in vehicle mode but his Autobot thermal sticker always felt like a dead giveaway when he was posing as a Decepticon lol. I never remembered seeing him in anything except for his commercial. That later comic story sounds a bit like the modern day Marvel character Moon Knight.

The idea of Punch/Counterpunch is been used for the Shockwave-figure from Transformers:Animated but then in a different way. Instead of a Autobot spy who disguise himself as a Decepticon, Transformers Animated Shockwave disguises himself from a Decepticons Spy into an Autobot.
I never really read much of the comics.
And I don't even remember him in his apparently in the cartoon.
I'll need to rewatch the episode and check out more of him.

I remember The Headmasters airing at 6 am everyday on cable channel based at Hong Kong But thanks to conflicted schedules like school, I only manage to see few episodes.

The new Transformers '84 comics is really giving him his due. Simon Furman has ALWAYS done a great job with these characters! He was the one who answered letters to the UK comics (in character) in the 1980s, and starting with "The Enemy Within" in issue 13, he wrote some EXCELLENT story arcs!
One of my favorite characters
The Allspark Almanac (IDW's short magazine that listed Transformers Animated characters that never appeared in the show) featured an Autobot/Decepticon by the name of Rosanna/Flip Sides. Their body-types are exactly the same, with the only differences being the colors and the Autobot/Decepticon emblem. It is hinted in both Rosanna and Flip Side's short bio that they are the same bot, a Decepticon spy among the Autobots.
I remember having the toy! This was around the time I was getting out of Transformers toys (It was early 1988 and I was almost a teenager) I actually played with them as 2 characters
I still like this concept and idea. Its very interesting especially with the premise where his personality would start to split and causes a moral issue to both sides
