I've been mixing with the music vs beat for a long time though the technology allows for quick snap-to's I always prefer outros / intros and transition buildups as a crossover into the new song or* use the 2nd song popping in and out of the 1st. After that the mix of 20 songs have been compressed into a more progressive mix where some tracks are hashed out sections and other songs are fully played. :)

I have Dnb on my turntables that read 175 and 87 bpms. Im still learning how to mix and format my playlist by bpms and tempo/Key notation.
i have the same issue. I think that the software (rekordbox?) is reading it at half of the bpm that it actually is. 87 x 2 = 174. It still makes it hard to mix because of the mental math that has to go into it. Have you figured out how to change the displayed bpm of the track? if you did let me know lol
@@SUPERPUKE on rekordbox, before analysing the track you can choose a bpm range for which the track is in, so if you chose a 110 - 180 bpm, the track would be displayed as 174 not 87, you might be using a range of 68 -138 which means the software thinks the track is 87 bpm

Hi there, I’ve just got my first set of decks, I’m quite good finding music that goes together well, does it not matter so much about “beat matching” and just creating smooth transitions between tracks?

Depends what ur trying to achieve. If you want dance floor dynamite, you need to be able to swiftly move from track to track around maybe 20+ tracks per hour, mixing out on the right bar, not just on beat. The thing is, when your tracks are TOO ‘Sandy’, it’s boring for other people and too safe n easy. I personally like to mix where the tunes compliment each other. They shouldn’t be too different (especially in bpm), but I like them to be different tonally. If turntable 1 is playing a muddy, bass track, I like to mix into a more staccato, drum 🥁 rich track, then maybe a track with horns, or whatever. Or maybe both tracks have a lot of percussion, but maybe one is Latin drums and the other is more electronic drums. I live the overlap of my mix to be clever and somewhat noticeable rather than too hidden. I also don’t want their bpm’s and beats 100% matching. I like a slight ‘off’/quantise because if a mix is vibrant (eg Jump up, jungle, clown step...) an urgency and tension is created for the listener as their body clock/metronome seeks to find order. U notice ur heart move up to ur throat when a DJ drops a tune with slightly off bpm, as he adjust the pitch gradually so it syncs up. If you mix too cleanly, people can literally fall asleep.

Mixing cleanly doesn't make people fall asleep bad tune selection does. A DJ who is awesome at beat matching,use of effects,scratching,double drops,the works can still bore a crowd if their tunes selection is shit. Just like a DJ who doesn't have many technical skill can absolutely smash a set by having a really good tune selection and reading the crowd well.

How do guys mix two intros which have no drum pattern or percs 😂 shit is wild
I am currently in the process of learning how to beatmatch. At the moment i have a lot of troubles trying to do it especially if there aren't any drums in the intros. A friend of mine who is really good at it told me that with a lot of practise i will be able to focus on other noises that help me to beatmatch correctly.
I used to always mix in key but once you understand your playlists keys become some what irrelevant my best ever sets are ones where i refused to check keys. mixing in key is safe but its boring and not exciting majority of the time...personally. DNB specific
